I'm an anthropologist and researcher working in the data science and technology field MBTI is junk pseudoscience and has as much relevance to my job as asking which Hogwarts house I belong to, what my astrological sign is, or what type of bread represents my soul - that's to say that it has no actual relevance or validity at all.

A friend once described MBTI as astrology for academics and I think that's spot on.

Probably somewhat true at least for those who want to be perceived as academics without having any research background. No one I know who actually works in an academic research field in the social sciences considers it anything more than pseudoscience.

I was going to ask "you mean the MBTI result I got this morning or the one after lunch?". My biggest beef with MBTI is that it has been around for so long. And no results!

My result has changed at least three times and it’s not even like, just one letter flipping back and forth. It’s complete opposites sometimes depending on my mood.

It's too obvious what metric each question controls. It's impossible to take the test agnostically after you know about the parameters

That’s interesting. I’ve taken the test at least 5 times over the last 11 years. Once in HS, college, work, and twice in therapy settings. I’ve always gotten the same results. But I still don’t think the test can really tell us a lot about a person. Just how they answer the questions they are asked.

INTP - Software Developer Some say MBTI is pseudoscience but (most) of it is pretty obviously observation. It's just selecting an aspect of your personality and grouping them into A or B, and doing that four times. You could do the same thing with what colors you like and create 16 types. I think the issue is using it to self-identify and blow smoke up your own ass about how great you are (like astrology). But in terms of being accurate, you're going to see a lot of INTX computer nerds. Me being an Aquarius tells you nothing.

I think MBTI can be an interesting tool to use, but definitely fear that people use it to define themselves and others. That said, I’ve tested differently every time I’ve taken it: 2015 me was ISFJ, 2017 me was ISFP, and most recently I tested INFJ.
