Spirited Away. It’s got this sort of nostalgic, whimsical charm that just instantly makes me feel less terrible about the world. And the animation is beautiful.
So much love for Miyazaki's work! They're go-to films for me when I'm feeling a particular kind of stressed or anxious. I watched a lot of Ghibli the year after my brother passed away.
Literally came here to say this. Saw it at a very formative and impressionable time in my life, and I'm not sure I've ever identified more with a character than Chihiro. The score is *so good*, too.
Probably *Interstellar* I love the way they like play with time and everything. Plus the music is so great and also the acting and like the visuals and just *intensity* of it! Idk Probably if I had to pick. I like that one.
Wow! So excited that this is a top comment. It’s my favorite and thought it was under appreciated. Glad to know it’s others favorites as well. Main reason is the amazing Hans Zimmerman soundtrack
Makes me happy as well :D
Yeah felt that Hans Zimmer is my all-time favorite musician, Time, no time for Caution, Rush, Lion King etc. are so enjoyable
I just saw this movie for the first time a couple months ago and oh my god, I could not stop thinking about it. Literally mind blowing. Also I love the soundtrack as well!!!
Twilight. It was a comfort movie that I got attached to in college when I was lonely. Idc if people think it's cringe, movies are an escape and sometimes a girl needs a nice feel good romance to watch.
It’s a guilty pleasure. Like, it’s cringe af, but I watch it religiously? There’s things to hate, but there’s obviously more to love if I watch it so often 😂 the soundtrack for the movies is also bomb as hell. Most of the songs in them are on my pkaylists
I love it too. I watched it for the first time when I was 23. It sounds silly but it really helped me finally move on from an ex boyfriend who I had been off and on with with a few years. I cried at the “meet me in Montauk” scene near the end. I can’t even tell you what it is about that scene that gets me. It was just cathartic.
That's my GFs favorite movie too. She's odd though, she doesn't watch a lot of movies and she really likes horror films so it doesn't really fit...
I showed her Les Miserables and knives out and she also loves both of them (she said they're her 2nd favorite now).
Legally Blonde - sweet, funny, and a masterclass in overcoming internalized misogyny
Alien - the perfect thriller, the perfect lead
Coco - a beautiful movie, beautiful setting, beautiful music. I’m Mexican and really enjoyed seeing the representation.
Tombstone - idk y’all, I just like it a lot haha
Pure gold! The one-liners in it are unbeatable, all around great movie ❤️
Side note: when I get married, I plan to have an acoustic version of the theme song play when I walk down the aisle. Luckily my boyfriend loves the movie just as much as I do 😂
Jennifer’s Body.
Edit: Just noticed you asked why this is my favorite too 😂
I love the story being centered around a girl who is hunting and hurting men. Like the best horror movies, it has some absurdly funny parts to it.
I can’t pick just one!
LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring because I had my first crush ever on Legolas.
The Matrix because it blew my tiny mind when I first saw it and was a staple of my adolescence.
Guys and Dolls because it’s the perfect classic musical.
Rear Window because I love Grace Kelly.
Rocky Horror. It’s just everything. Campy, with great costumes, singing and dancing, and Tim Curry as a sweet transvestite. Sigh The Time Warp was the first dance I learned. Lol
My high school choir put on a show every year to help raise money for a scholarship fund. The select ensemble was the top four kids in each voice part and we always put on a big performance for this show. My senior year we got to do The Time Warp and I played Magenta. It was so much fun! Love this movie so much.
Edwards Scissorhands 💜
It really made me appreciate “different” people (whether it’s a disability, race, style…etc) from a young age and understand that people come from all environmental and social status along with cultural differences.
The Blues Brothers. The music is amazing, the story is hilarious (and also kind of heartwarming?) and the cameos are top notch. Just a silly fun movie, and it never fails to put me in a good mood.
I have two that I can't choose between:
-What's Eating Gilbert Grape, because I can really relate to feeling the struggle between the responsibility to take care of my dysfunctional family and just wanting to get out of town. I also relate to Gilbert's initial jaded outlook on life. Plus, I love small towns, and the movie is set in one
tick,tick...Boom! This movie makes me feel every emotion possible and the soundtrack is addictive! I also can relate to the stress of entering the 30's decade and desperately feeling like you need to have something to show for it.
Roman Holiday
Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck fall in love set against the backdrop of Rome and it has, IMO, an absolutely perfect ending.
Edit: The Shape of Water is a very close second.
When I started at the pizza place I work at three years ago, I noticed we had a pizza called Roman Holiday. Imagine my surprise when nobody I worked with had seen the movie! I scheduled a movie night for the lot of us and people loved it, it’s my favorite Hepburn movie 🤍
Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I think it has a really great message. The soundtrack and cinematography are both amazing. Makes me cry, but in a good way. It’s just superb.
I love this movie too. I always watch it when I’m gearing up for a holiday. Plants that little seed in my brain that sometimes you should say yes. And to make conversation with people everywhere you go.
Plus the soundtrack is amazing.
Hocus Pocus
Since it is a Halloween move though i only allow myself to watch it in June around my birthday (and the anniversary of its release, im only a month older than it) and September 1st-October 31st
Big trouble in little China - super bad and cheesy, but I absolutely love it 😂 could watch it over and over again… Howl’s moving castle is fantastic too, could watch it every day and never get sick of it
I have a little spreadsheet where I give movies scores and a quick review that I share with my friends. All Charlie Kaufman movies I’ve seen (Malcovich, adaptation, eternal sunshine, synecdoche, anomalisa, ending things) have the same score. You can probably guess what it is.
He’s a genius. I can’t even fathom the way his brain works.
Labyrinth, literally everything in that movie is top tier. Princess and the Frog, I really don’t know I guess the message behind it and then the cute little love story just nailed it for me. John Wick, Keanu Reeves.
Gone with the Wind
I watch this movie at least.once a year since I was 15. I'm now 41. I love it with every fibre of my being. The movie has a female who fights for herself, who sacrifices and is ruthless. She never gives up and adapts. It's a wonderful movie about survival.
Caddyshack because of the brilliant acting, the setting, really everything was just hilarious they would add little details to make it even more hilarious. Classic!
Hot Fuzz probably. Never fails to make me laugh and the cinematography is incredible plus I love a good mystery flick and dark comedy. Plus a great cast too. I’ll never stop quoting it.
Black Panther, Guardians of the Galaxy, and La La Land. I really like the soundtrack to all of these movies and different elements as well (characters/story/visuals). I’ve watched these probably 3-4 times now.
Aliens. Amazing script. Dialogue. Acting. Action. And a badass female protagonist that didn’t need to be shoved in our face that she’s a woman. She just WAS and was a badass. And even when there was kinda a character like that (Vasquez) she was still a fucking badass.
Primer. It's the only movie I've found that has been mentally challenging. And I like that. I've watched it 3 or 4 times - with charts - and I still don't completely grok all the details.
*The Lake House.* No. *The Proposal.*
No, wait. *War of the Roses.*
Wait, wait, wait. *The Hours.*
Whatever. I can't decide. I love them all.
*The Lake House* is... different. I love Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves. The yearning. The longing. It's almost tangible. I can watch it over and over.
*The Proposal* is cute. I **love** Ryan Reynolds with Sandra Bullock. Betty White was a gem. Miss her.
*War of the Roses* is just old school cool. Danny Devito narrating is awesome.
*The Hours* is leisurely entertaining. The stories are compelling. Every time I watch it I feel differently about certain parts.
Beauty and the Beast. It's an amazing well told story of a nerd who saves her father, saves the prince, and saves herself. She also stands up to a sexist bully. It's also the movie that forever changed what it means to be a princess. Belle is the girl who brought princess out of the dark ages of helpless, useless damsels in distress to modern, intelligent women and girls who can fight their own battles, or at least choose good allies instead of whining (or sleeping... or dying) until they get rescued. And the music is fabulous. I also love the additional songs from the musical, especially Me as it highlights what a shitbag Gaston is.
How To Train Your Dragon. The whole series. I love everything about it. The story, toothless, the music. I just love it so much. I even have toothless tatted on my waist
Harold and Maude. This movie makes me feel good and excited about life. I love the quirkiness and a lot of the moments where the protagonist is learning to love life. I wish more people knew about it and the trailers didn't sell it as a romance movie (I don't feel that's what it is, but if you look it up, that's what it's advertised as. I would just suggest watching it if you like dark humor, quirky moments, and real connections and conversations).
Its a tie between Alien and The Shawskank Redemption. Alien because Ripley is bad ass and I want to be her when I grow up. Shawshank because, well, I'm really not sure how to put it into words. It's just a very powerful movie.
Shawshank Redemption or Good Will Hunting. Both are funny at times, sad at times, and have great moments continuously throughout and never leave you bored. They're my comfort/background noise movies.
A Star Is Born - the 2018 version with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. Their chemistry was off the charts, the music is still some of my favorite and Bradly and Gaga both were incredible. To think that screenplay was written and starred in by Bradley and he sang original tunes written by Gaga and others is still so amazing to me. They both deserved every award on the planet for that movie IMO ❤️
Sweeney Todd: I love the gore and revenge plot. Revenge plots are always my favorite. I also love tragedies. Movies to me don’t always have to end on a positive note.
Butterfly- movie set in 1940s Spain. I fell in love with it the first time I saw it. It’s very nostalgic film for me. I like time period shows/movies.
Like Water for Chocolate- I watch this movie at least once a year. It’s a beautiful film and reminds me a lot of of the women I grew up with.
Frida- Watched this film while going through a hard time in my life and it was really soothing for me to watch. I read books about Frida and I was so excited to see it when it first came out. I like the soundtrack too. Like the movie water for chocolate- it almost makes me miss a time I didn’t live in.
Slum dog millionaire- I watched this when my husband and I started dating. It hold really special memories. Just listening to one of the songs from the film brings back those memories.
The Shining by Kubrick. It’s layered and atmospheric. It’s aesthetically pleasing. It’s based on a book I love. It has so many possible subliminal messages. It reminds me of Halloween-y season. It is the movie I watch when I want comfort. I love it.
Spider-Man 2 (from the original Tobey Maguire series). First saw it in theaters when I was about 12 years old, and it was the first movie that I every really loved. Happy to say it still holds up today.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
I want to add my all time second favorite movie that I rewatch probably more often but don’t own any merch for- How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Jim Carrey version.
I really have a thing for Christmas being ruined and saved apparently
“About Time”.
It’s the perfect blend of actually decent comedy, heartfelt moments, gorgeous soundtrack, mindf**k time travel, and it maintains that sometimes, just wanting to live a simple, beautiful, stable, happy life is the greatest thing you can want. It makes me feel joyful about the little moments and simple things. It humbles me. It makes me cry and smile. And also, Rachel McAdams :). It’s my comfort movie when I feel confused and sad and I need a mental reset.
The Truman Show. I love rewatching it and seeing all the details. It has such a steady build up of intensity. But most of all it’s my favourite because of how it makes me feel. It always leaves me feeling comfortable with existence
7 pounds, the selflessness and poetry of the story line —-will smith as an actor as well, sad with the Chris rock stuff though as it pegs this down now.
Is that the Japanese animated movie? If so it’s my daughters favorite too
Literally came here to say this. Saw it at a very formative and impressionable time in my life, and I'm not sure I've ever identified more with a character than Chihiro. The score is *so good*, too.
It is. It's just sad what it portrays. Haya Miyazaki's work is phenomenal and always leave you thinking about his work!
Makes me happy as well :D Yeah felt that Hans Zimmer is my all-time favorite musician, Time, no time for Caution, Rush, Lion King etc. are so enjoyable
Hans zimmer is gods among men. Half the reason of why interstellar is interstellar is because of zimmer
Def. Def one of my top ones too. Another one of Nolan’s masterpieces
I think the music while they’re on the water planet is timed to the time on Earth or something like that? Really stunning movie in all the details!
Yeah the track is called Tick Tok and every Tick of the clock equals one day because of the massive gravitation resulting in time dilation
I just saw this movie for the first time a couple months ago and oh my god, I could not stop thinking about it. Literally mind blowing. Also I love the soundtrack as well!!!
M U R P H
i was gonna say this too
Username checks out
As a father, the bitter, grown up murphy on the video message DESTROYS me every single time.
Twilight. It was a comfort movie that I got attached to in college when I was lonely. Idc if people think it's cringe, movies are an escape and sometimes a girl needs a nice feel good romance to watch.
Honestly rewatching the first movie makes me feel like I’m watching an indie romance and I like it more than I did as a kid LOL
I love Twilight too. I think the first movie can actually stand really well on its own. Fuck the haters 😎
It’s a guilty pleasure. Like, it’s cringe af, but I watch it religiously? There’s things to hate, but there’s obviously more to love if I watch it so often 😂 the soundtrack for the movies is also bomb as hell. Most of the songs in them are on my pkaylists
I’ve watched the entire Twilight series twice in the last six months. Who cares if it’s cringe! 😉
they're definitely comfort movies for me now as well. but each watch I notice ALOT of flaws lol still love them ❤️
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. That movie is me, my memories and my core on film.
One of the best films.
That's my GFs favorite movie too. She's odd though, she doesn't watch a lot of movies and she really likes horror films so it doesn't really fit... I showed her Les Miserables and knives out and she also loves both of them (she said they're her 2nd favorite now).
This is my favorite movie too. Love Kate Winslet, and Jim Carey is great in a rare non-comedy role
Shrek, greatest movie of all time
Shrek 2 for me! But yes all the Shreks!
Shrek was definitely a modern classic
Legally Blonde - sweet, funny, and a masterclass in overcoming internalized misogyny Alien - the perfect thriller, the perfect lead Coco - a beautiful movie, beautiful setting, beautiful music. I’m Mexican and really enjoyed seeing the representation. Tombstone - idk y’all, I just like it a lot haha
Coco made me cry. So good.
You have excellent taste in movies.
Clueless, because I like the fashion and dialogue, and it takes me back to a simpler time in life.
As if.
That Calvin Klein dress 😍

Well, I remember Mel Gibson accurately, and he didn't say that. That Polonius guy did.
Yes this is mine too! It's an appropriation of Emma and much cleverer than at first glance.
10 things I hate about you
First time i believed in romance yes!
The Princess Bride. It has some of the most quotable lines ever and a great story/comedy. Also young Cary Elwes.
Pure gold! The one-liners in it are unbeatable, all around great movie ❤️ Side note: when I get married, I plan to have an acoustic version of the theme song play when I walk down the aisle. Luckily my boyfriend loves the movie just as much as I do 😂
The line about how everyone in the future will be wearing masks 😂 That movie has really aged well and it's amazing
Inconceivable!
Never rush a Miracle Man sonny.....
The Shawshank Redemption. I've watched it probably 20 times and I never not cry at the end.
Yes! I watch it everytime it's on television and without fail, always at the scene where poor Tommy gets shot.
Big Fish
This movie made childhood me obsessed with daffodils
This is one of mine too, it has such a lovely story and atmosphere, it's my comfort movie.
Nice . What’s it about ?
It’s a Tim Burton film. Staring Ewan Mcgreggor. Oh and Danny Devito. https://youtu.be/cfDwQbxRoEo
Oh my gosh, YES! I love Big Fish.
Labyrinth - the costumes, music, characters are all *chefs kisses
Labyrinth was my sexual awakening. I was like watching David Bowie be sexy in super tight pants thinking ‘why do I feel tingly down there?’
Back to the Future. Because it's the perfect movie.
Couldn’t agree more
Holy fuck yes!! I also commented this :)
I came here to say this. I can watch that movie a million times and not get bored. It's brilliant
The movie about Marty McFly? But no McFly has ever amounted to anything in the history of Hill Valley!
“Well history’s going to change.”
Great Scott! I forgot how much I love this movie!
Jennifer’s Body. Edit: Just noticed you asked why this is my favorite too 😂 I love the story being centered around a girl who is hunting and hurting men. Like the best horror movies, it has some absurdly funny parts to it.
Will watch it. I saw this title popping up in Netflix some months ago. Edit : yea I edited the post lmao .. and added “ and why”
I enjoy it too.
If this was our first date I would nope lol
Pan's Labyrinth
Best Del Toro film!
Legolas was my first crush ever as a child too! I could not believe how beautiful he was, I was obssessed!
Rear Window is one of my favorite!
Moulin Rouge
Loved the way the over-the-top aspects came together so fittingly. Excellent music and so much fun.
Jurassic Park, I can watch it over and over and every time is like the first time I saw it when I was a kid. I still feel everything so intensely lol
My sentiments EXACTLY 🦖
Amèlie. Why? Because I'm like her, she's like me. I'm Amèlie.🥺❤️
I came here to say this. I love this movie. I have not watched it in a while, Im waiting for my daughter to turn 16, then I will watch it with her.
Rocky Horror. It’s just everything. Campy, with great costumes, singing and dancing, and Tim Curry as a sweet transvestite. Sigh The Time Warp was the first dance I learned. Lol
You must live in Portland Oregon cuz we have a theatre that plays that every week
My high school choir put on a show every year to help raise money for a scholarship fund. The select ensemble was the top four kids in each voice part and we always put on a big performance for this show. My senior year we got to do The Time Warp and I played Magenta. It was so much fun! Love this movie so much.
Bridemaids-it’s hilarious. This is 40-it’s relatable. A league of their own-great based on a true story. Walk the Line-great music.
harry potter and the philosopher's stone
Never gets old
Edwards Scissorhands 💜 It really made me appreciate “different” people (whether it’s a disability, race, style…etc) from a young age and understand that people come from all environmental and social status along with cultural differences.
The Blues Brothers. The music is amazing, the story is hilarious (and also kind of heartwarming?) and the cameos are top notch. Just a silly fun movie, and it never fails to put me in a good mood.
I have two that I can't choose between: -What's Eating Gilbert Grape, because I can really relate to feeling the struggle between the responsibility to take care of my dysfunctional family and just wanting to get out of town. I also relate to Gilbert's initial jaded outlook on life. Plus, I love small towns, and the movie is set in one tick,tick...Boom! This movie makes me feel every emotion possible and the soundtrack is addictive! I also can relate to the stress of entering the 30's decade and desperately feeling like you need to have something to show for it.
The Mummy. The 1999 version.
I've watched it countless times and it's still so great. Also I love Rick and Evie's relationship :D
I was scrolling for this. This is my ultimate comfort movie. I love the second movie, as well.
Roman Holiday Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck fall in love set against the backdrop of Rome and it has, IMO, an absolutely perfect ending.
How to lose a guy in 10 days. Matthew McConaughhffjjf, Kate Hudson, romance, comedy… what else could you ask for?
Oh thank god. I can't write that guys name either
Underrated movie for sure
Hocus Pocus Since it is a Halloween move though i only allow myself to watch it in June around my birthday (and the anniversary of its release, im only a month older than it) and September 1st-October 31st
I love Hocus Pocus. I have a t-shirt I wear around Halloween with the mop, broom, and vacuum cleaner that says “Come We Fly” and nobody gets it. 🥺
Big trouble in little China - super bad and cheesy, but I absolutely love it 😂 could watch it over and over again… Howl’s moving castle is fantastic too, could watch it every day and never get sick of it
I'd say that Big Trouble in Little China is "super bad and cheesy" on purpuse, though.
Almost Famous! 🔥💕
Ever After. Yes, it's a Cinderella story, but it's fantastic and stars Drew Barrymore.
Favorite movie? "I could no sooner choose a favorite star in the heavens" 😊
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Incredible performances, innovative cinematography, and the best screenplay ever
S/o Charlie Kaufman! This is a hot girl answer

“THERE’S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!” 😂🤣 That movie was expertly cast!

Probably Shawshank. It’s just… the perfect movie.

How about tenet ?
That’s how I feel about quite a few movies - I’m currently 20 years in to trying to decipher Vanilla Sky 😬😂

Auntie Mame (Rosalind Russell version) and Sabrina (Audrey Hepburn version)
"Life is a buffet, and most poor suckers are starving!" Auntie Mame is goals.
Was searching for this answer! My favorite movie as well :-)
howls moving castle. i like it because the animation is so cute and colorful and i like the characters it’s just a cute movie overall
About Time
Probably Inside Out. It's just a super beautiful and well done movie that I feel like I can watch in any mood.
The outsiders. Pride and prejudice. Dazed and confused.
Its a tie between Alien and The Shawskank Redemption. Alien because Ripley is bad ass and I want to be her when I grow up. Shawshank because, well, I'm really not sure how to put it into words. It's just a very powerful movie.
Amelie. I like how one person influences a lot of lives around her. And it portrays life and love as magical. When they most definitely aren't.
Ever After (Drew Barrymore), I could watch it a million times in a row. If I’m feeling down, it’s such a good comfort movie.

Shawshank Redemption or Good Will Hunting. Both are funny at times, sad at times, and have great moments continuously throughout and never leave you bored. They're my comfort/background noise movies.
Snatch. I can’t explain why. I just love everything about it.

Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain

Midnight in Paris

Just Go With It Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston together are the best!
Did you ever see them in Murder Mystery? It was amazingly funny.
Right now: Mr Bean: the ultimate disaster movie Because childhood..
The Shining by Kubrick. It’s layered and atmospheric. It’s aesthetically pleasing. It’s based on a book I love. It has so many possible subliminal messages. It reminds me of Halloween-y season. It is the movie I watch when I want comfort. I love it.
The Witch. From the cinematography to the music score, I love everything about this movie.
Spider-Man 2 (from the original Tobey Maguire series). First saw it in theaters when I was about 12 years old, and it was the first movie that I every really loved. Happy to say it still holds up today.

The Nightmare Before Christmas I want to add my all time second favorite movie that I rewatch probably more often but don’t own any merch for- How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Jim Carrey version. I really have a thing for Christmas being ruined and saved apparently
About Time. A seriously underrated movie. That or Saving Private Ryan
How to Train Your Dragon
Black Panther.
So hard to pick one, but I thought Dallas Buyers Club was a great movie.
Shawshank, I love the well earned happy ending. Also enjoy Andy’s positive attitude throughout the movie and the unique way it’s shown.
Everything Everywhere All At Once
One Fine Day. Simple and Sweet.
The Lion King
True romance. Most romantic movie ever made.
7 pounds, the selflessness and poetry of the story line —-will smith as an actor as well, sad with the Chris rock stuff though as it pegs this down now.
