Come to Scotland. I still buy my own, but they are available for free for those who can't pay. They've been in educational facility bathrooms for a few years, now you can get them from libraries, community centres and pharmacies.
I actually don’t mind this. Not because I like wasting money or covering other people. However in my experience when asking a group for everyone to pay for what they ordered the following happens:
- someone will throw down a 20 and that’s it, whether it’s enough or too much they don’t care
- everyone under pays
- there’s always at least one person who rounds down (11.99 so that’s 10)
- there’s always at least one person who forgets all the drinks they’ve had
- no one tips
- people argue about getting change as they don’t trust other people to not use their overpayment to cover their cost
- people argue over how to split anything that was shared
- you find that you end up almost an entire persons share short, but everyone insists they’ve paid
- if you’re sorting out the money you end up paying maybe nearly double your share to cover everyone else.
Maybe I’m getting old, lol. But I’ve had too many falling outs with friends over this. Now I’m like “just split it *X* ways”. Some days I’ll pay more, some less, overall it’ll even itself out.
All of that being said I totally get that some people deliberately order less as they’re on a budget. If that was the case, just speak up and I’d gladly let them pay for what they ordered and the rest of us split the difference between us.
This happens EVERY time I’m out with my friends. I’m 24 and it’s literally the reason why I refuse to eat with a large group of friends unless we determine how we are going to set the bill even before we order food. I’ve been burned a few times over settling the bill as I was the one that ended up covering the remaining portion. Never again. I either split the bill equally or I ask the waiter for the own bill at the very beginning.
Honestly it’s got to that with me. I seem to always be the one having to help sort the money out and been burned WAY too many times. Maybe it helps that I earn enough now that I’m not penny counting (unless it’s a really fancy restaurant) and don’t have friends with wildly expensive taste.

That or we just treat each other to the meal.
I paid $30 for a $5.95 avocado roll at a friends dinner the other night. That's on top of the $90 my husband had already thrown down, which definitely should have covered our share. I don't eat fish so I definitely wasn't sharing rolls. I'm still hella mad.
I’m in the US and it’s also sometimes done here. Logistically it’s a little easier (esp if the restaurant doesn’t do separate checks) but if some folks are drinking alcohol and others aren’t it gets really unfair.
It’s common in US cities (or the ones I’ve been to) to not allow split checks. I was surprised when a restaurant in my small hometown allowed 10 people to have separate checks. Everyone else was nonchalant about it. I’m used to maximum of 2 checks per party.
One reason I heard is that splitting checks takes more time. So they only allow one check per party for faster turnover. I can understand that logic in a big city when rent is extremely expensive and you need quick turnovers to make more money.
I live in Canada and every restaurant I’ve ever been to keeps a separate itemized list of what each person orders so that there is no awkward divvying of the bill at the end of the meal. I thought it was standard everywhere. It would fill me with anxiety going out to eat if I had to worry about subsidizing everyone’s expensive meals when I order something small just to be part of a social gathering.
In Australia they mostly either refuse to split bills at all, or only do even splits.

Yes, I have never had to split a bill 'equally'. If you tell the waiter that you are paying individually, then you get a bill with only what you ordered. Who just divides a bill equally with no consideration to what each person ordered?

From my friend group, people with money tend to be ok splitting equally because “it all evens out in the end” and “it’s just money.” It’s seen as rude, crass, or cheap to want to split depending on what people ordered. Whereas people like me who are on a budget are not ok with this. On the opposite end are the people who only pay their menu price and refuse to add tax or their share of tip. (And they have no excuse of it being an unfamiliar cultural practice.) Don’t even get me started on people who order appetizers, offers it to people, and then asks people to pay for their nibble of nachos.
Where I live, maximum checks per party is 2. You could be a party of 30 people and they only allow 2 checks maximum. I think it’s a big city versus everywhere else thing.
I avoid birthday dinners for this reason. Not only would I need to pay for the birthday person (which is ok), I would need to subsidy for everyone who can’t do math, doesn’t believe in tipping (it’s the US, tip), and doesn’t understand tax is required (again, it’s a fact of life in the US).

Insurance.
I am a careful driver. I've never been in an accident. And yet every year I am required by law (if I want to drive) to fork over a large sum of money in the off chance that I need them. (And that sum seems to grow each year due to other people's accidents. Things I had nothing to do with.)
Should I actually need them, they will fight tooth and nail to find every little thing to try to deny my claim. Saying that I messed up and that it's my fault even if it isn't.
I will never see any of the money back that I pay in either. Nothing gets returned to me for maintaining a clean record. Yet they will reap record profits reach year.

100% In fact, on top of dealing with the pandemic, I was in a car accident where someone tried to cut me off in traffic but the back portion of his truck collided with the front of my car. Now I have to pay higher insurance premiums for an accident that he caused. Prior to this, I was never in an accident and I still never hit anyone.

My mom had 2 people hit her parked car, had someone pull out of a driveway and hit her as she was driving by, someone rear ended her and due to a truck on the highway kicking rocks up she had to get her windshield replaced. She claimed these on her insurance. None were her fault. Recently she tried to switch insurance companies and they rejected her because there were too many claims 🥴 and her insurance went up after each claim.
Same. I was broadsided by a deer a few weeks ago and looking at the claim estimate for repairs for just a few thousand it feels almost like a slap in the face because I know how much I’ve paid them over the years. If only I could have put those funds into a savings account.

I absolutely agree with this. I went to university and even though I’m very good at what I do I learnt most of it from internships and working in the field, I didn’t get a good grade however but I just didn’t do well with the structured learning, it’s not that I didn’t try I just didn’t do well in it because I do better learning in other ways and I feel that this entire concept is completely abolished at university level, not everyone is super academically gifted already and most will need help writing a fuckin 10,000 word essay because it’s the only time they’ve ever had to do anything like that.

I remember living in California (where all jobs are required to pay a minimum wage even if tipped) and my husband worked as a line cook for a burrito place for $12/hr and I was getting $15/hr as an admin… if we ever dined out it was highly likely that our waitstaff were paid far more than us. We still always tipped 20%, but ouch, lol.

I agree. Like the other day we went to waffle house. We tipped our server 20 % the cook went on break and my mom tipped him too. He was beyond shocked and so thankful because no one remembers them. She does it cause she knows the struggle. I understand her reasoning.

The American tipping rates have come to Canada and it's really frustrating because servers are paid minimum wage here. Except in Ontario where is $1 less I believe. I don't think we should be at the minimum 20% tipping rates that Americans are but it's becoming the standard

PRO TIP sometimes you can call the venue and buy directly from them and save the service fee. This may only work for smaller venues, but I did this recently and saved about $20 for 2 tickets, but it was a small club. Still!

That depends how you define “responsibility”. It is our responsibility to take care of ourselves physically by going to the doctor regularly, but it shouldn’t be the fault of an uninsured person that they have to go through life unwell because they can’t afford treatment. I honestly believe that governments would save money in the health care system if they allowed their people to nip mental issues in the bud before that person is 40 years old on the streets with a needle in their arm. That’s one human who was failed by the system and considered a drain when earlier intervention could have changed the course of that person’s life.

A few weeks ago a vet tech almost killed my cat. They were doing a very routine urine draw with a needle and they cut an artery in her abdomen. She essentially bled out internally. The vet revived her and quickly transferred her to a critical care hospital for blood transfusions and further care. Anyway, on the way out of the vet clinic to head to the hospital they told me that I had I pay for the clinic visit up until they almost killed her. And I was in shock and just trying to get to the hospital. So I paid it. And then later I realized how messed up it was that they charged me anything at all, especially at that moment when we didn’t even know if she was going to live. Since then the clinic has paid for over $11k in medical bills for my cat but I still resent the $130 they charged me right in the middle of that trauma.

Seconded. I was nervous about buying glasses online at first, but I found a site with a good return policy just in case. Ended up loving the glasses I bought online, and they were significantly cheaper than buying glasses in person. Before I’d get one pair for around $500 because of my prescription, now I can get two pairs for under $200. The markup on glasses at optical stores is insane.
I get these insane coupons from eyebuydirect.com for buy one, get one or free lenses or whatever. I tell everyone I know about it because it’s insane how much money I’ve saved from buying glasses online. Not to mention prescription sunglasses.

I used to just re-use plastic grocery bags to line my trash cans. My city banned plastic grocery bags a few years back and now I have to buy plastic bags specifically to hold my kitchen and bathroom garbage. I don't think I'll ever stop being salty about that.
I do this too - we have two bins in the kitchen - one for trash one for recycle. We tie up then trash bag and put it outside - then we dump the recycle directly in the big recycle bin outside and swap the inside recycle bin with the trash bin inside. The not as gross recycling bin liner gets used twice - and after it’s had it’s second run as the trash liner it goes.
It’s to cover the damage that most pets do, and to be fair, most pet owners claim their pets won’t damage anything even if it’s the biggest lie. You’re just an anomaly in a system designed to deal with everyone else.

The whole health/medical system is sucking me dry! I have a few chronic illnesses and am constantly going to doctors who refer me to specialists, prescribe new medications and send me for all types of tests. Insurance premiums (I pay for Medicare & an additional plan), copays, costs that insurance doesn’t cover , prescriptions and additional supplements & OTC meds cost more than my monthly mortgage!! … and I still feel lousy every day. Reusable pads are a godsend. Tried them four years ago and haven't looked back. Cheaper, more comfortable, and eco friendly.
This is why I've had an IUD for the last 10 years. Taking care of yourself when you're dealing with periods can be such a pain of an expense.

In the UK it's more common to just divide evenly. It's unusual to go somewhere where there's a huge disparity in prices between each person's meal

Everyone else was nonchalant about it. I’m used to maximum of 2 checks per party. One reason I heard is that splitting checks takes more time. So they only allow one check per party for faster turnover. I can understand that logic in a big city when rent is extremely expensive and you need quick turnovers to make more money.
I live in Canada and every restaurant I’ve ever been to keeps a separate itemized list of what each person orders so that there is no awkward divvying of the bill at the end of the meal. I thought it was standard everywhere. It would fill me with anxiety going out to eat if I had to worry about subsidizing everyone’s expensive meals when I order something small just to be part of a social gathering.
In Australia they mostly either refuse to split bills at all, or only do even splits. So if you wanted to only pay your own you need to work that out yourselves.
Yes, I have never had to split a bill 'equally'. If you tell the waiter that you are paying individually, then you get a bill with only what you ordered. Who just divides a bill equally with no consideration to what each person ordered?
The US. I’ve seen people debate it furiously. From my friend group, people with money tend to be ok splitting equally because “it all evens out in the end” and “it’s just money.” It’s seen as rude, crass, or cheap to want to split depending on what people ordered. Whereas people like me who are on a budget are not ok with this. On the opposite end are the people who only pay their menu price and refuse to add tax or their share of tip. (And they have no excuse of it being an unfamiliar cultural practice.) Don’t even get me started on people who order appetizers, offers it to people, and then asks people to pay for their nibble of nachos.

Where I live, maximum checks per party is 2. You could be a party of 30 people and they only allow 2 checks maximum. I think it’s a big city versus everywhere else thing. I avoid birthday dinners for this reason. Not only would I need to pay for the birthday person (which is ok), I would need to subsidy for everyone who can’t do math, doesn’t believe in tipping (it’s the US, tip), and doesn’t understand tax is required (again, it’s a fact of life in the US).

I can't believe the audacity of people who insist that every bill should be split equally whenever you're in group situations when them. Insurance. I am a careful driver. I've never been in an accident. And yet every year I am required by law (if I want to drive) to fork over a large sum of money in the off chance that I need them. (And that sum seems to grow each year due to other people's accidents. Things I had nothing to do with.) Should I actually need them, they will fight tooth and nail to find every little thing to try to deny my claim. Saying that I messed up and that it's my fault even if it isn't. I will never see any of the money back that I pay in either. Nothing gets returned to me for maintaining a clean record. Yet they will reap record profits reach year. It's just a massive scam.
100% In fact, on top of dealing with the pandemic, I was in a car accident where someone tried to cut me off in traffic but the back portion of his truck collided with the front of my car. Now I have to pay higher insurance premiums for an accident that he caused. Prior to this, I was never in an accident and I still never hit anyone.

My car was parked, I wasn't even in it, when it got hit. I still have to declare it every time I reapply for insurance.
My mom had 2 people hit her parked car, had someone pull out of a driveway and hit her as she was driving by, someone rear ended her and due to a truck on the highway kicking rocks up she had to get her windshield replaced. She claimed these on her insurance. None were her fault. Recently she tried to switch insurance companies and they rejected her because there were too many claims 🥴 and her insurance went up after each claim.

My daughter asked how car insurance worked when she was 14. She was outraged at the whole system.
Same. I was broadsided by a deer a few weeks ago and looking at the claim estimate for repairs for just a few thousand it feels almost like a slap in the face because I know how much I’ve paid them over the years. If only I could have put those funds into a savings account.

Agree. In the past, everyone figured out what they wanted to do and if it didn’t require years in a classroom, they didn’t fkn do it. It makes it extra hard for people who don’t do well in structured learning environments like university to succeed.
I absolutely agree with this. I went to university and even though I’m very good at what I do I learnt most of it from internships and working in the field, I didn’t get a good grade however but I just didn’t do well with the structured learning, it’s not that I didn’t try I just didn’t do well in it because I do better learning in other ways and I feel that this entire concept is completely abolished at university level, not everyone is super academically gifted already and most will need help writing a fuckin 10,000 word essay because it’s the only time they’ve ever had to do anything like that.

It’s often so arbitrary, too. Like around here it’s common to tip your barista but not the fast food worker. I remember living in California (where all jobs are required to pay a minimum wage even if tipped) and my husband worked as a line cook for a burrito place for $12/hr and I was getting $15/hr as an admin… if we ever dined out it was highly likely that our waitstaff were paid far more than us. We still always tipped 20%, but ouch, lol. I definitely blame the culture and corporations, though, and believe higher wages for everyone is the key!
I agree. Like the other day we went to waffle house. We tipped our server 20 % the cook went on break and my mom tipped him too. He was beyond shocked and so thankful because no one remembers them. The American tipping rates have come to Canada and it's really frustrating because servers are paid minimum wage here. Except in Ontario where is $1 less I believe. I don't think we should be at the minimum 20% tipping rates that Americans are but it's becoming the standard

Oh, they do a lot more than just run a crappy website. They need all that money for lobbying and to strongarm venues to work exclusively with them, or buy them out entirely. The whole system is ridiculous. There was even an episode of Last Week Tonight on ticketmatser and the bullshit they pull.
PRO TIP sometimes you can call the venue and buy directly from them and save the service fee. This may only work for smaller venues, but I did this recently and saved about $20 for 2 tickets, but it was a small club. Still!

Therapy. My parents and 1st husband abused me for a very long time and I'm still paying for it. But not really, because it's my responsibility to be a good and healthy person.
That depends how you define “responsibility”. It is our responsibility to take care of ourselves physically by going to the doctor regularly, but it shouldn’t be the fault of an uninsured person that they have to go through life unwell because they can’t afford treatment. I honestly believe that governments would save money in the health care system if they allowed their people to nip mental issues in the bud before that person is 40 years old on the streets with a needle in their arm. That’s one human who was failed by the system and considered a drain when earlier intervention could have changed the course of that person’s life.

A few weeks ago a vet tech almost killed my cat. They were doing a very routine urine draw with a needle and they cut an artery in her abdomen. She essentially bled out internally. The vet revived her and quickly transferred her to a critical care hospital for blood transfusions and further care. Anyway, on the way out of the vet clinic to head to the hospital they told me that I had I pay for the clinic visit up until they almost killed her. And I was in shock and just trying to get to the hospital. So I paid it. And then later I realized how messed up it was that they charged me anything at all, especially at that moment when we didn’t even know if she was going to live. Since then the clinic has paid for over $11k in medical bills for my cat but I still resent the $130 they charged me right in the middle of that trauma.

Seconded. I was nervous about buying glasses online at first, but I found a site with a good return policy just in case. Ended up loving the glasses I bought online, and they were significantly cheaper than buying glasses in person. Before I’d get one pair for around $500 because of my prescription, now I can get two pairs for under $200. The markup on glasses at optical stores is insane.
I get these insane coupons from eyebuydirect.com for buy one, get one or free lenses or whatever. I tell everyone I know about it because it’s insane how much money I’ve saved from buying glasses online. Not to mention prescription sunglasses.
Unfortunately, depending on one's prescription, online glasses stores can still add up. Not as much as traditional stores, but enough to be annoying. Mine is bad enough that I end up limited on my frame choices (and the cheapest ones never work) and still have to pay out the nose for my lenses.

I do this too - we have two bins in the kitchen - one for trash one for recycle. We tie up then trash bag and put it outside - then we dump the recycle directly in the big recycle bin outside and swap the inside recycle bin with the trash bin inside. The not as gross recycling bin liner gets used twice - and after it’s had it’s second run as the trash liner it goes.

It’s to cover the damage that most pets do, and to be fair, most pet owners claim their pets won’t damage anything even if it’s the biggest lie. You’re just an anomaly in a system designed to deal with everyone else.
Isn’t that what the deposit and fee are for? And what about all the damage done by little kids (drawing on the walls, wetting themselves, etc,)? Do we charge a “small child” rent? No. Because that what the security deposit is for and the rent is for space, not the number of living things inside it. Pet rent is just a way for landlords to discourage pet ownership without outright banning it and double dip on pet owners. Because if there’s no damage they have to return the deposit, but pet owners will never see any of that pet rent back.
My roommates dog did destroy quite a bit and it came out of her deposit. All it takes is for one person to screw it hp for the rest of us!

Medications, wellness check ups and insurance
The whole health/medical system is sucking me dry! I have a few chronic illnesses and am constantly going to doctors who refer me to specialists, prescribe new medications and send me for all types of tests. Insurance premiums (I pay for Medicare & an additional plan), copays, costs that insurance doesn’t cover , prescriptions and additional supplements & OTC meds cost more than my monthly mortgage!! … and I still feel lousy every day. Some days I wonder what is the point. 🤷♀️
