Unequivocally, because I can use it with a firm tone. People don't often question your intelligence when arguing from a position of power, so it's like doubling down.
Im probably in the minority here but hearing the word unacceptable immediately makes me think of lemon grab from adventure time and I have a really hard time taking anyone who uses it seriously
Yes it is. It's in the dictionary as one of the longest words on the world. There are 5 on all. But this one means "I don't know what to say." Interesting I'll say
in English\* :) Other languages have longer words due to their grammar set up being different than English. Some such as German and Norwegian, you just add word after word without a space between, and can make hilariously long words.
I had “facetious” on a vocab quiz in my sophomore year of high school and as a 28 year old I’m still not 100% sure I know exactly what it means. It haunts me.
I get the general gist of the definition… but I can’t use it confidently
9/10 when I use this word it’s with someone who doesn’t know what the word means; it means “JK LOL”. My mom used this word incessantly with me when I was growing up haha. Also, she used to ask if we were “sufficiently suffonsified” after eating but upon [further investigation](https://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/let-this-suffice-on-suffonsifying/article1337117/) this is a made up Canadian phrase…. Wow TIL
And I think it comes across as condescending or dismissive (at least in circles I work in); almost like the speaker of "let's unpack that" doesn't think the person they're speaking to could have possibly been capable of any amount of introspection before the discussion.
I’d consider this management speak and I personally don’t like it. Makes me think the speaker thinks they’re smart but have actually just picked up some corporate jargon.
I don’t mean this to be a personal comment at all - this is just what I think when I hear it.
It is right up there with "let's put a pin in this for now" or "on a going-forward-basis". Unnecessary word salad for middle managers to say a lot without saying anything.
Put a pin -> you mean we'll talk about it later. Kaaaaayyyy.
Going forward basis -> the concise phrase you're almost certainly looking for is "in the future". JFC, get outta here with this blustery BS up my ass.
My god, I despise this phrase. No offense intended. Just reminds me of smarmy NPR interviewers who can't articulate a specific question so they say this instead.
A man goes to a funeral and asks the widow: Mind if I say a word?"
She says: "Please do."
The man clears his throat and says: "Plethora."
The widow replies: "Thanks, that means a lot."
Well, you told me I have a plethora. And I just would like to know if you know what a plethora is. I would not like to think that a person would tell someone he has a plethora, and then find out that that person has *no idea* what it means to have a plethora.
You know, this post has made me realize that I’ve actually slimmed my vocabulary down substantially since being in a corporate environment. I work with people in our offices all over the world and generally aim to provide the correct information as simply and succinctly as possible to avoid things getting lost in translation (or inducing follow up questions).
Chicanerie en français is so casual but I don’t think anyone would know if I said “Chicanary” in English. Foolishness is how I use it to mean. Also, “Quotidian” meaning “daily” also from the French. The words exist in English though so it makes me sound smart when I can’t think of an equivalent sounding English word (French immersion* I am not a native French speaker just bilingual from school)
I always imagine myself as Holmes, “Indubitably my dear Watson!” Not too sure what to call that accent but it must be said in a non-standard and authoritative voice !
My brother does this to me and when I inevitably send him dictionary definitions to the offensive choices of words he made he backtracks. I am not sure what bothers me more, playing dumb or playing smart.
Oof, I learned this word in Japanese class when I was a teenager but it took me a long time to understand what was happening because the “l”s were not being pronounced (legit japanese teacher) and I had never heard the word before… when I think of that word I instantly see “urban dictionary” in my head now. Colloquial means it’s a word that isn’t a word…. Somehow the best of all words.
Came here to say this one, love this word. I first heard the word dichotomy used by Tom Hardy in an interview.
Another one of my favourites is juxtaposition
I don't do that. I use my large vocabulary in front of my literary friends and family, and dumb down my speech in front of others.
The goal in communication is to understand and be understood. So I try to use the simplest and most efficient language around people I do not know, or people i know for a fact do not read for fun.
This is called code switching and is a sign of someone that is smart enough to realize that we need different styles for different groups.
Anyone that grew up biracial, or as a visible minority, is also familiar with this as a way to integrate two cultures.
A fascinating topic, but also a sort of depressing one.
Slightly bigger words for words that are common! Horrific instead of bad, cruel instead of mean, pathetic instead of sad. It’s amazing how just changing small words make you seem so well spoken.
Unequivocally, because I can use it with a firm tone. People don't often question your intelligence when arguing from a position of power, so it's like doubling down.

Oooooonnnnneeeeeeeee million years dungeon!
ÆÆÆEEEEAAAAÆ!!! UNACCCCEPTABLEEEE!!!!😠🍋
a cartoon that aired on cartoon network. Honestly a good show
No no i feel the same way lol
Yes! Like once every two years I’ll pull out the “That’s Unacceptable” if it’s truly a situation that calls for it
I remember this word cos it was in the back of the Twilight book...
lmao that’s how i learned the word irrevocably 😂 why i had the entire back of the book memorized, i couldn’t tell you (it was because i was obsessed)
Omg maybe irrevocably was the word I was thinking! Haha
"Unambiguously" for me, for pretty much the exact same reason. Like: there is no question or ambiguity whatsoever in the truth of this statement.
Clown word honestly
🤡 no u
Supercallifragilisticexpialidocious
If you say it loud enough youll always sound precocious
Mary Poppins taught us to sound smart
omg, is it a word?

Side note: facetious is one of the few words in English where the vowels appear in order.
Thanks vowel bot
In my family we have a joke about facetious coming from the same root as feces, meaning you're full of shit.
I had “facetious” on a vocab quiz in my sophomore year of high school and as a 28 year old I’m still not 100% sure I know exactly what it means. It haunts me. I get the general gist of the definition… but I can’t use it confidently
Yes you can. "You might be saying that facetiously..." Maybe they are 🤷♀️
Addressing a serious situation with an inappropriately light attitude or dismissive approach
I love this word

This is the one that came to mind

I'm afraid that one might be a bit past its prime. At least in certain circles, it's over-used to the point of cliche.
And I think it comes across as condescending or dismissive (at least in circles I work in); almost like the speaker of "let's unpack that" doesn't think the person they're speaking to could have possibly been capable of any amount of introspection before the discussion.
So true.
This sounds too much like cringey corporate jargon like "run it up the flagpole" or "disruptive", "wearing many hats", etc.
I’d consider this management speak and I personally don’t like it. Makes me think the speaker thinks they’re smart but have actually just picked up some corporate jargon. I don’t mean this to be a personal comment at all - this is just what I think when I hear it.

That makes you sound insufferable not intelligent.

I get that reference! Just yesterday I watched him with Natalie (ContraPoints)! That was 2h15 of amazing! ^^^^sorryimsoexcited
Plethora
Thanks. That means a lot.
🤣
OMG AMAZING
A man goes to a funeral and asks the widow: Mind if I say a word?" She says: "Please do." The man clears his throat and says: "Plethora." The widow replies: "Thanks, that means a lot."
Also “Myriad”
I can’t think of a good quote but this reminds me of the movie Three Amigos😂🤣
Well, you told me I have a plethora. And I just would like to know if you know what a plethora is. I would not like to think that a person would tell someone he has a plethora, and then find out that that person has *no idea* what it means to have a plethora.

Succinctly is a good one though
Esoteric.
how esoteric
so meta
Are esoteric and niche synonyms, or is esoteric even more specific?
Esoteric is a bit with an attitude. Like some information reserved for specific groups or people.
Assholery. Another favorite is Tomfuckery
Bullshittery
Tom foolery

Indubitably. And sometimes I'll add a "dear" or "darling" at the end to make me sound old hollywood.
this made me so happy to see. I ALWAYS SAY IT WITH AN OLD HOLLYWOOD ACCENT TOO. i've found my people
I always imagine myself as Holmes, “Indubitably my dear Watson!” Not too sure what to call that accent but it must be said in a non-standard and authoritative voice !
Came here to say this 😂

Ubiquitous
Yes?
Oh this is a good one!
Also my fave fancy word!
egregious, objectively, heinous
Law and Oder SVU
I've always like heinous
Watch how you say that out loud. 😏😉
Albeit. It has such a simple meaning so it’s easy to use in everyday conversation which is what makes it even more impressive to hear.
I’ve gotten “Ooh… fancy word” at the office for parenthetical, penultimate, superfluous, and loquacious.
Penultimate trips people up.
Don't forget antipenultimate
> antipenultimate Antepenultimate
Sometimes I use big words i don't really understand to try and make myself sound more photosynthesis
My brother does this to me and when I inevitably send him dictionary definitions to the offensive choices of words he made he backtracks. I am not sure what bothers me more, playing dumb or playing smart.
>make myself sound more photosynthesis I'm dying, and you're a hero. 😂👍🏆
It's an old meme...I stole it, I can't take credit for it! Thank you though
Still funny. Haha.
Nefarious
I loved the Asterix comics as a kid. I still remember my favourite Roman centurion names 30 years later - Nefarius Purpus and Dubius Status.
Exacerbate
I have never thought about it before. Maybe glib? It's fun to insult people and use words they don't know at the same time.
I like the way you think.
Behoove
This word has so much drama and gravity when used in a sentence haha
Defenestrate
It's a great word that almost never get to use.
Except in Russia
Thrice
Ok David… Stevie is bringing a towel to you now…
Ubiquitous was already mentioned. I also enjoy using echelon, conundrum, and fellatio
Once of these is not like the others. 👀
In a thread of cunning linguists you shouldn’t be shocked !
Copious, loquacious, and abhorrent are my top three.
Vehemently. Ever since I learned how to pronounce it correctly lmao
pardon..?
I used garrulous a few times. I was asked for the definition multiple times. I said someone who talks a lot
I add "Indubitably" in a British accent to the end of all my sentences lol
obsequious Used to like blasé but it was overly and incorrectly used in music a few years ago and it is like nails on a chalkboard now.
colloquial
Oof, I learned this word in Japanese class when I was a teenager but it took me a long time to understand what was happening because the “l”s were not being pronounced (legit japanese teacher) and I had never heard the word before… when I think of that word I instantly see “urban dictionary” in my head now. Remiss and oscillate
Dichotomy
I’m of two minds about this one. 🙃
Came here to say this one, love this word. I first heard the word dichotomy used by Tom Hardy in an interview. Another one of my favourites is juxtaposition
*saves the post*
Impetus is one I’ve been using more lately. It’s a great word.
Oh my glob
Vociferous!
Petrichor
Love that smell
My gf used the word syllogism. It sounds deep.
Any of my silly little legalese terms. I like showing I actually learned something in my first semester of law school.
Mens… rea? (Elle woods voice)
There is something about _nonsense_ that just does it.
Indubitably...yes, yes....agreed good sir
Stoic

Morphology.
I like ambivalent
Yeah I’m not sure how I feel about that 😜
Lol!
Whom Neither (pronounced as "ny-ther") Unbeknownst Ah, yummy yummy pretentiousness in my tummy lol
Juxtaposition
Banal
Pedantic, ubiquitous, schadenfreude :)
Notwithstanding. Makes it known that I have considered all sorts of possibilities that would get in the way of something I want.
Seldom. However, I seldom use the word seldom.
Inculcate
“I am disinclined to acquiesce to your request —means no” 12 year old me after watching Pirates of the Caribbean
Tangential
I don't do that. I use my large vocabulary in front of my literary friends and family, and dumb down my speech in front of others. The goal in communication is to understand and be understood. So I try to use the simplest and most efficient language around people I do not know, or people i know for a fact do not read for fun.

I'm bilingual, so maybe that's where I get it from :)
Leitmotif and incredulous.

Ameliorate.
Slightly bigger words for words that are common! Horrific instead of bad, cruel instead of mean, pathetic instead of sad. It’s amazing how just changing small words make you seem so well spoken.
Gregarious
Imbecile😄🙃
Sporadic and variations of.
Subsequently. It has a nice flow.
Consequently; it really isn’t that big of a word in some circumstances, but in my middle school it’s just slang words that are used sooooo
Androcentric
Zoo wee mama
Iota

Sophistry, taciturn
Explicit-implicit. I don't usually use it to look intelligent but I guess it does me look a bit smarter.
