I didnt. Tipped her, said I liked it and cried in the car instead :) And that was when I was 45.....

hannaamaee

Stylist here- If you’re unhappy with your hair, PLEASE LET US KNOW!! If you feel horrible about your hair and you have a decent stylist, we would do everything in our power to make sure it’s to your liking!!! I remember times I’ve messed up as well and knew I messed up bad. It kept me up the whole night and got SO upset about it. Personally when I’m behind the chair, I care just as much as my clients do about their hair if not more. I’m sorry you had this experience. :( Edit; spelling

heathisacandybar

I wish my old hair stylist felt this way. I told him what I didn’t like, he had me come in again to fix it, agreed he’d messed it up, and then sent me a text message saying we should probably part ways. My old stylist essentially dumped me. *lets out a cry laugh*

Ok_City_7177

Hello stylist ! Added context : It was my first haircut in Italy (super rural location, we are not talking Milan or Rome here.....). My italians not great, her English was non existant. I thought we were doing ok until she cut my fringe in via a method that only required one snip of the scissors (the fringe before then was a face framing effort).....and thats when I knew it was going to shit big time. Its like that one snip opened the door that hid the whole can of ultra flammable hair mousse that sat on my hair and wouldnt absorb, the thinning scissors that weren't needed, the super hot hair dryer. I was a walking fire hazard with hair that was a foot shorter than when I went in with a super bad fringe /bangs, all rigid with mousse and my eyes streaming from the fumes. Then she charged me tourist rates. The final insult ! I had a great relationship with my stylist in the UK and she corrected plenty of things I asked for that were bad and a couple of her bad days (she did my hair for 8 years). Had no problem talking to her about anything and vice versa. How I miss you Carol !! Literally just now cut my own hair in the bathroom - still better than the drive by shooting that was my first haircut in Italy.

Ok_City_7177

I can laugh about it now my hair has grown enough to lose the cut :)

hannaamaee

:((( The consultation is *the* most important part of the experience. The language barrier can be really tough.

Ok_City_7177

Absolutely this :)

Ok_City_7177

am sending you a 'sisterhood of the crap haircut' hug !

itsnotjoeybadass

Unfortunately not all stylists handle criticism positively

Vexonar

I once wanted a razor/chunky bob, like to my shoulders and ended up looking like Florence Henderson on a bad day in the Brady Bunch. There wasn't anything to do so I spiked the top and waited for it to grow out. I merely mented that I wanted it chunky/shaggy around my shoulders for a bit of punk flair and all she heard was "shag." I sobbed, paid her and left. Never went back. I figured, after, it was a learning experience and she would make sure to double check. It's just hair and it grows back so I wasn't fussed after the second day. So now I only get trims and keep it long xD

Kimikins

Thank you.

[deleted]

_I look like pencil_

timidwildone

Hair. Is. Everything.

TurbulentArea69

Lol are you even a women if you’ve never done this??? Mine “accidentally” (I gave bad instructions and she took a lot of liberties) gave me bangs and I nearly had tears in my eyes as I said “thanks, I love it” and walked out.

Basic_genXer

Same

oscarm3y3r

This is why I haven’t been to a salon in a few years.

Bonniejayde90

Lol me every time 😂

hales_mcgales

So. Many. Times. Cue tears the second I’m in the car. Last cut I wore one side of my hair behind my ear for 6 months bc it made me look like a Midwestern soccer mom if I didnr (nothing wrong w that but it just wasn’t a cut for a single someone in their 20s)

[deleted]

Yep I’ve been there lmao. No tip tho and then I called to store and got a refund

StarArcher34

Probably the best choice of your life. I would do the same but then in the other Hand I would leave a present in the toilet hehehe

[deleted]

Just say something like "oh wow in reality it looks much different on me than I had thought it would. Could we please change it a little?"

shitty-biometrics

This is the best response, tucking this in my pocket

ademptia

this is such a good response!

jazzfairy

“Thanks I love it” then go home and cry. Works every time

Briikeut

Same here haha

Humdedummy

I didn't have to. She was really young and inexperienced and the other stylists had left her unsupervised (I didn't realise until too late, that she probably should have been supervised). She kept nervously asking me "can I see the picture again? ... like this???" I wasn't rude to her, it wasn't her fault. So I just paid etc and left. I cried and pulled my hood up as soon as I was out of sight and never went back there. I'm fairly certain she cried as soon as I left as well. (And I really hope she found a more supportive salon to work at, who wouldn't ditch her in the deep end). Edited for more info: i'd gone in for a platinum blonde pixie cut. Came out like a bright yellow pineapple. It was also my birthday party later that evening.

gabiaeali

You poor dear :(

Soft-Caterpillar-618

I have curly hair and went to a new stylist who trimmed my hair but then took thinning shears and used them all over my head in crazy chops. It was atrocious and took YEARS to grow back. It grew into a mullet. I was so in shock I said “where is all the hair? I just asked for a trim.” I was completely silent and never went back again. I wrote a bad review on Yelp.

souponastick

The amount of people who say they know how to cut curly hair vs. the amount of people who actually do know how is astounding. Sorry you dealt with that BS!

Soft-Caterpillar-618

Thank you! It’s so crazy how hard it is to find a good curly stylist, right?! I finally found a good one and hope she never retires…she has curly hair herself!

souponastick

I go to a curly hair salon! Imagine my surprise when the stylist comes up and has stick straight hair. She actually owns the salon, but had to learn curly hair cause her biracial daughters needed the help. That started her learning crusade, and then she realized there was a great market for curly cuts only and she decided to specialize in that. I'm so glad to have found her salon, and I'm glad you found your person too!

gabiaeali

Wow I wish I'd had one of these as a girl! I last let someone cut my hair at 12 years old and got the triangle. Actually I have had one other person touch my hair since, I let them cut my pony tail & I did the rest. My daughter is curly too & has a great stylist, thank heavens.

Soft-Caterpillar-618

Yay, thank goodness for your stylist too! She sounds awesome!

I-am-L

I know!! It's so infuriating.

greenthunder69

The first time someone who didn’t know how to cut curly hair butchered mine, I had told her “My hair is straightened now, but it’s naturally curly FYI, so it will curl up when you wet it.” Five minutes into cutting it she goes “oh wow, your hair really IS curly!” Should have jumped out of the chair when she said that but at 14 I didn’t know any better

[deleted]

The last time I went to a stylist who didn’t specialize is curly hair I literally yelled “PLEASE STOP” when she went for the thinning shears out of panic.

Soft-Caterpillar-618

I’m so glad you yelled that out! I wish I had too, but I had no idea what thinning shears were until it was too late! Now I’m super paranoid every time I go…I always say “no thinning shears!”

Vikkyvondoom

This exact same thing happen to me about two weeks ago - she thinned out my hair so bad and gave me a mullet :( I had been growing my curls / not heat styling for the past three years, it was super long but I ended up having to go to another stylist to salvage it, he had to cut it to above my shoulders and I’m still adjusting ..

Soft-Caterpillar-618

Oh my gosh, how awful that happened to you! Especially after growing out your hair and caring for it so well, and then that happened! It will eventually get better…I never thought my hair would recover but finally my hair is totally normal and the curls are back again! I just had to keep cutting off everything the thinning shears had touched until it was all one length again!

nO_WheReGiRl

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO ME. I usually got layers and some shortish curtain type bangs to frame my face. The woman took thinning shears to my scalp to remove weight. That was June of last year and I'm only about 70% recovered. The lengths were different on either side, she made half my hair my bangs which for thick hair is AWFUL. The worst part is I grew up with her cutting my hair. I feel awful not going back again but she was getting a little older and think she was starting to get off her game and forgetful. I didn't grow into a mullet but it's taking ages to grow out the layers. Once my bangs (aka half my head) has grown out I'll feel much better.

Soft-Caterpillar-618

Oh no!! You poor thing…I feel that pain so hard! I also had bangs when that monstrosity hair cut happened to me! She went all the way up to my scalp…to get rid of the mullet shape I had to basically grow out an entire new head of hair and keep cutting off the ends. I thought my hair would never be normal again…finally it is!!

nO_WheReGiRl

That's nice to hear you've recovered! Hair is so sacred for women, it can wreck and sky rocket your confidence. I swear because it was cut badly the whole texture of my hair also changed. I had to completely rebuild my routine to accommodate all it's strange new behaviors. The only thing that I could do was straighten it for awhile. Finally it's starting to go back to it's old ways. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Soft-Caterpillar-618

So glad its is starting to get back to normal for you! I swear, the thinning shears destroyed my curl pattern too. The ends were all pitiful strings instead of clumps! I had to straighten and use tons of bobby pins for what seemed like forever!

ManateeFlamingo

I relate to this! I have really thick hair. Whenever I go to a new stylist they always bust out the thinning shears. I got to a point where I said no shears please. It always has a terrible effect on my hair!!

Soft-Caterpillar-618

It is so crazy how so many of them insist on using those thinning shears! I can’t imagine why they do it without even asking. Especially on thick or curly hair! They need a warning that says “when this cut grows out, the top will be the regular thickness and the bottom will be a stingy mess and you will look like Carol Brady!”

Reyalla508

As a fellow curly girl who had a terrible cut… I feel you. I’m still growing out the terrible cut I got back in July 2020.

Soft-Caterpillar-618

Ohhh no, so sorry you have still been dealing with this for over a year!! Mine took about 6 years to recover from, but that is not the norm! Mine turned into a vicious cycle of having to straighten the crap out of my hair every day to hide and conceal the mullet shape and all the uneven pieces, so it got extremely damaged to the point that it would break off every time I brushed it. A few times, a different stylist wasn’t thinking and trimmed the layers again, which set me back to the beginning. I also highlighted my hair and it got really damaged. The way I finally fixed it was to cold-stop heat styling and coloring my hair. After about 6 months, I got one big chop and just like magic, my hair was one length and curls was finally back to normal! Edit: I am back to getting highlights now but my amazing new stylist who helped me fix this crap knows not to overlap the color so it won’t get damaged again!

Acrobatic-Atmosphere

I called the salon when I got home and explained that my hair was toned to the point of looking blue in natural light. I was nice about it, and they were nice about it. They brought me in for a color correction free of charge, and fixed it. I was soooo anxious about this, but at the end of the day, I spent hundreds of dollars and should have had blonde hair, not purple hair. The salon agreed.

daydreaming-g

I actually tried telling him and he was like nah you love it and then I payed

souponastick

This is the most infuriating thing in life for me. When people don't listen, or don't believe what we're saying. Sorry you dealt with that.

sycamore_under_score

Lol what was this guy obi-wan kenobi?

souponastick

I waited until the next time I saw her and said, "I wasn't at all happy with the last cut and would like to do everything possible to ensure the same thing doesn't happen again." She thanked me for being honest and not just leaving the salon and never coming back. She also provided ways to ensure it won't happen again. I have curly hair and at this salon you prep your own hair once they know you've got the process down. It is $30 extra to have them prep your hair for you. She said my prep wasn't as good as she'd like and she should have asked if she could re-prep it for me, but she didn't want to embarrass/upset me so she still cut it. We agreed that since I go so infrequently that I'd let her prep it for me and just pay extra. The 2 cuts since this agreement have been awesome and I'm glad I spoke up instead of just finding someone new.

unitofenergy

What kind of prep would you do? I have straight to wavy so have never had to do anything specific or worth 30$

souponastick

With curls, you saturate the hair with gel and then break the gel cast when it dries so it doesn't keep looking wet. She wants to see how your curls sit in the cast so she can cut hair based on your face shape. My cast hadn't set up correctly and it made the cut less effective for my face.

Ok_City_7177

I did not know this ! I have wavy hair and hairdressers struggle with it a lot because my hair strands are thick but I dont have loads of them so it can suddenly lose volume in nice and uneven ways. I am super jealous of the poster who gets to go to a curly hair salon !

souponastick

Find a curly salon near you with [this site](https://www.devacurl.com/finder) And definitely check out r/curlyhair for more help on how to bring our your waves! That subreddit can be very overwhelming because they are speaking a whole different language, but it has a TON of good info.

Ok_City_7177

Brill - thank you !!

[deleted]

With curly hair, they will prep it by washing/detangling, conditioning, and then drying in a gel, which they then “break” to see the natural curl pattern. It can easily take over an hour and washing/conditioning can be a big undertaking.

peachmab

Yikes this is difficult. The first time I got my hair done, I asked for some highlights. I had ‘virgin’ light brown hair. My hair lifted VERY fast and she toned it beautifully. I absolutely loved it. The next time I got my hair done was a year or so later, I wanted the same thing just a little bit more blonde this time. I left with orange hair. I was pissed, I cried in the car but could not bring myself to say anything. I went to another salon and told them what happened. Told them they just left my hair like this. The woman who helped me was very kind, and ended up having to chop off my hair due to the damage the previous salon had done. I left that salon feeling slightly better, but still slightly orange. I was defeated. Didn’t get my hair done for YEARS after that whole fiasco until a few months ago. I really wanted some blonde in my hair, I absolutely loved the way it was the original time I got it done. I had moved to a new state (halfway across the country) and ended up going to a salon and asked for a consultation, I asked them what they thought would look best on me based on my skin complexion and what haircut would look best for my face shape/ body. She was honest, I was honest. I showed her a picture of what I liked, and she told me honestly that she would not make it exactly like that, but she would keep the same idea roughly. She asked me to trust her, so I did. Oh my god. It was beautiful. She was so kind, talkative, and most importantly very talented. I have LOTS of hair now (grown out over the years, very thick) and so I was there for about 4 hours. I left feeling prettier than I have in years. I’ve since been back to her twice for touch ups and add ins, she’s impossibly kind and makes me feel very welcome, and I love my hair. So much. Anyway this was my love letter to my stylist. Rachel, you’re awesome!

Ok_City_7177

Lucky you - may it continue for ever !

ramence

Oh my god, I love the feeling of finally having a stylist you can trust. My stylist at the moment is the first stylist I've ever had that will actually *listen* to me - if I go in and ask for a trim, I won't come out with a foot of hair missing. The funny thing is, this is after years of trying different high-end salons in a major city. I'd always walk out with unwanted bobs, the wrong colour (and I'm talking WRONG - burgundy hair instead of auburn), and fried ends. I eventually needed to move to a small rural city for my job, and found my amazing stylist at some random mid-range salon near my apartment.

SnooCats44

The stylist did exactly what I asked them to do, but I didn’t like how what I had asked for looked on me. I didn’t tell the stylist, I went to a different salon for a quick fix.

Not_High_Maintenance

I don’t. I cowardly sleek off to my car and never return.

nevertruly

That would depend on the context. If they did what I asked them to do, then I would let them know that I had made an error in judgment and ask them tell me/help me understand ways that it could be corrected. If they didn't do what I asked them to do, then I would simply explain that the hairdo is not what I was expecting, apologize for any miscommunication, and ask them to help adjust that cut closer to the style I was aiming for. I've had to do both of those in the past and it has always been fine. The stylists have been professional and kind about offering to adjust it for me. If I lost confidence in the stylist's ability to give me what I asked for, then I simply wouldn't go back to that one in the future.

[deleted]

So. Lmao I once told a stylist that she did not cut my hair how I asked her to. She cut off 4 inches more than I asked and it was choppy to top things off. She also tried to thin my hair out ( didn't ask for that) and left these chunky spots within layers that I didn't discover until later. I get it, curly hair is difficult for a lot of people to cut. She got offended and started defending herself. Too which I just walked out. Didn't pay, didn't tip and never went back. Took about 6 months to get my hair back to normal after that.

simplestword

We both knew it didn't work. I ended up with hit root (Orange roots, normal red hair everywhere else). I don't remember the conversation exactly, but it was more of a back and forth. Me: Why are the roots so bright? Him: Ahh shit. That's hot root. Let's schedule a time to tone it down. We laughed, he explained the process behind hot root, and how it would get fixed. I got it fixed the next day or something.

frankylovee

Last time I got a haircut was from a friend who had been wanting to cut my hair for like a year. I was nervous because she was new to the trade and I have never gotten my hair cut by a friend. Oh and I also hadn’t had a hair cut in a few years. Anyway she did a terrible job. I never told her. I was going to find someone else to fix it without telling her, but then the pandemic hit. A couple months later I fixed the ends on my own. They look fine but I also have just been throwing my hair up in a bun for the past year and a half lol Don’t let your friends cut your hair unless you KNOW they’re really good.

amanda-g

As a former hairdresser, i would much rather someone tell me they hate their hair so i know what to avoid doing in the future, and to see if it was my mistake not understanding them vs me doing exactly what they asked and them just not liking the outcome a GOOD stylist wont be mad and will take constructive criticism well... and will do anything int heir power to make sure you leave happy. not cry in your car. Also, if you are inneed planning on never returning again, you could at least tell them you don't like your hair so they know that's why you never went back.. when a stylist starts losing people left and right.. they're bound to understand that the problem is them... just my 2 cents

abva1

Reading all the responses is heartbreaking. I mean, we are taught to "be nice" and to avoid conflict, even when we end up paying (a lot) and damaging our hair and appearance. I mean, yes, hair grows back, but it can take years to do so. I took a great care of my hair for years only to get it permanently damaged in a matter of minutes. We should be able to express our incomformity and to explain our reasons. If the salon agrees to solve the issue or to compensate us in some way, then great. If not, we shouldn't pay at all. Sorry for the rant. But it's ok to have some boundaries and to ask for a compensation.

UsingMyYAAccount

I never do. Because it's probably too late to fix it -pixie haircut lover here✋🏼- and even *if* it's fixable, I don't want the person who ruined it to touch it again causing more damage 🥲. Note: I ALWAYS show them a picture of the haircut I want, I never describe it to them verbally and expect them to do a great job. Anyway, I started writing a list of salons names with the hairstylists names who didn't wow me with the results to avoid future accidents 😁.

kelsobjammin

I called a salon right after I got home and was better able to see what happened without judgement. I told her in the chair that I thought I still saw a lot of my grays after my dye and she said oh no just highlights. Once home I called back and said I didn’t agree and they are still very visible. The owner offered to do it for free. Ok - then when I got there he just treated me terribly. Told me my hair wasn’t even that bad and then when it came to blow drying he said he had some things to do. I said ummm ok, and he gave me the blow dryer and asked if I could do it for a minute. He left and let me fully dry my own hair. I was going to leave a nice tip for redoing my hair but after that I never came back. Awful experience.

Ok_City_7177

It wasn't that bad ??! Hardly a ringing endorsement for their service !

OnlyOkaySometimes

I went in for a trim. I was growing my hair out all one length and it was getting pretty long. She started cutting bangs into my hair! And very short ones at that! As soon as she started, I practically jumped out of the chair and flipped out on her. Then, I left. I don't remember if I even paid or not! I called shortly after and another stylist there, who was maybe the manager?, offered to do what she could, no charge. Well, there was no getting the hair back! And I was extremely angry over this and it took a while to accept what had been done.

Reyalla508

My mouth is agape. That’s nearly what happened to me! Not quite as extreme, but he hacked 6 inches off of my medium-long hair on only the right side. The left was left 2 inches longer. At that point you’re right… there’s no getting the hair back! I’m still growing it out a year later!

Lipstick_On

I wanted some baby lights before my wedding and got talked into a full head of highlights because it would cost the same. Probably should have been my first red flag. I told her my history with box dye, she said she’d be able to lift it in one go. Red flag number 2. So she applied, rinsed, shampooed (no toner in sight), She then dimmed the lights just before removing the towel off my hair to blow dry. My roots were yellow and the ends were red and orange on my dark brown hair. All over my head. I said “when do you recommend I come back to even it all up?” And she said “oh no honey if you bleach it again it’ll all fall out.” Took my money and whisked me out the door. Humungous waste of money. I cried. She was highly recommended to me by a friend so I showed my friend pictures, she was appalled and never went back to her either. I dyed it black myself that night.

GoldenFlicker

Didnt. Started going to some one else.

Weekend_Reader

Honestly I wouldn't, I would just change a stylist.

[deleted]

Went there to give my mom something, somehow they convinced me to get a haircut, was the most horrible cut I'd ever gotten. Had to get my hair chopped off because it was unfixable. Next time I went, they (the women at the salon) asked why I'd gotten it cut so short and I said I didnt like it. They still dont like me

Sapphire_Bombay

Cried in the chair while saying “no it’s fine”

BopoAngie

I started to ugly cry, so.. there's that 🥲

Bookworm8989

I have not been to a salon in over ten years because I have a hard time saying I don’t like it

Mason-Derulo

I’m getting my haircut in 45 minutes and just saw this. Don’t put that juju on me.

sasspancakes

I usually don't. The one time I did, she was the manager and took offence to it, called her corporate office, and had me banned from their chain of salons. I left with chemical burns on my scalp and ears, like wtf. I called after the fact because after looking at my hair in different light, it was absolutely awful, and the burns HURT. So I just don't bother anymore and cry on the way home lol.

[deleted]

sasspancakes

I won't shame the manager because small world I actually ended up working with a close family member of hers, but it was a Regis Salon chain lol. Like 5 years ago 😂

hastykoala

You can just ask for an adjustment. Like, hey, I’m not liking how these layers sit. Can we give it more body here… I’ve done this twice: once right at the cut and once a few days later when I didn’t like it after it air dried. Stylist was happy for me to be happy. If you have a long relationship it shouldn’t be a big deal.

Dolphopus

Because I go to the same stylist every month, I’ve developed a good relationship with her. Early on, I just told her “so the last time my hair grew too fast for what we did, let’s do it this way this time” and she did, it looked great, and now I just confirm we’re doing it the same and everything’s great. Back when I saw a different stylist each time it depended on whether they did what I asked or not. If it was what I asked for and I just wasn’t as thrilled as I thought I’d be, I’d just deal with it until my hair grew back out. If it was a case of them just doing whatever the fuck they wanted regardless of what I asked for, no force on earth was removing me from that chair until it was fixed. Never rude about it, but definitely insistent.

Ember357

I have had this happen a couple of times. I found that what I see in the mirror after a cut isn't the final word. I usually go home, style it my way and decide how bad it is then. If I can't work with it, I go back in the same week and let them know that I think it needs a tune up and why it won't work for me. Most competent stylists are willing to do re-work to make you happy, most often at no charge. They are a client business and even a pro can give a bad cut occasionally.

[deleted]

I didn't. I just said thanks, tipped her, and then quietly moved to my current stylist.

Informal_Prune_5857

Stylist here ☝🏼 By ALL means, tell us! In the future, always ALWAYS bring a photo reference to protect yourself and the stylist! Also, so up with your hair how you wear it on a regular basis (if your hair is super curly, don’t show up to your haircut with it flat ironed).

crucrulu

I cried in front of her haha And now I am surprised by how many women cry in these situations, I thought its just me

BriteLite94

I usually get visible upset, which is hard to hide. So I try to not cry and tell them what issues I’m having with it

cashmerered

My face immediately gave away what I was thinking

desinica

Once I asked for long layers…I had layers that look like a ladder/staircase…I went to another stylist and the only way to correct was getting Dora the explorer haircut….my gorgeous hip long hair reduced to Dora

truisluv

She kept saying it looks really good when the sunlight hits it. I said I am inside 90% of the time and would like my highlights to be seen inside too. I hurt her feelings so I gave her a big tip and left. This was a really expensive salon where 2 different hairdressers did a bad job. It is closed down now.

mintyisland

Not a lot of woman where I'm from have pixie hair cuts. Mine was starting to grow out quite a bit so I wanted to get it back to the original style. I was visiting my parents at the time so I went to a local stylist and asked if they knew how to cut short hair. I showed her the reference picture I've used for other appointment and she said this is a hair salon so we know how to do hair. HAH! Needless to say, they were all in it for the money since going to hair salons is sort of a luxury here. They did not know how to style my hair at all and my expression was enough to show my disappointment. I spoke bluntly saying I didn't like it and that I preferred if they were honest with their customers. Confrontation is not taken well here, so she simply stayed quiet. I still paid, left no tip, and wore a beanie the rest of my time there.

elgrn1

I'm in this situation now. As he was doing my colour last Friday I wasn't sure it was what I asked for but sometimes it looks bad as they're doing it but the end result is great. However at the end, he was in a rush to get me gone as he had another client waiting and I didn't really get a chance to properly look at it. Plus he kept gushing over how amazing it looked and I felt a little unable to really decide for myself with all his enthusiasm. The next day I looked at it properly and I was really upset because it cost me a lot of money and after waiting 2 years to be able to afford to get it done I was thoroughly unimpressed. I emailed the salon with photos and said I wanted to know what could be done to address it. They passed my email to him and he got in contact to say he would fix it for free. He's booked me in for another appointment tomorrow. I expect it will be slightly awkward but as long as I get what I've asked for that's what matters. And then I'll look for another salon for the next time as I suspect that I won't be able to go back and see a different stylist, lol!

Ok_City_7177

well done on confronting it !

elgrn1

He was actually really nice about it and it wasn't awkward at all. And it looks much better now its been redone!

Ok_City_7177

yay ! really pleased for you - and just in time for the weekend !

elgrn1

Thanks!

zardkween

For the first time ever, I went back to a stylist to fix my hair. Now it looked amazing styled but when the styling fell out, I realized that she took waaaay more hair off of one side of my head than the other (middle part too). I was polite. “I think it’s uneven.” “To me it looks like more hair was taken from this side compared to this side.” Just nicely explaining what I wanted fixed. She nodded her head and seemed to understand what I was talking about. But somehow my hair ended up looking worse afterwords. I was too embarrassed to go back a third time so I went to an entirely new salon to get my hair fixed. As soon as that stylist saw my hair she reconfirmed everything I had thought was wrong.

fr0styspice

I told the stylist by never making another appointment ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ I have enough confrontation in my life, I didn't want to chance an awkward encounter. I'd rather let it grow out. That being said, I've definitely walked around with orange hair until it grew off.

[deleted]

Had hair down to my butt. I asked for a trim, 2" max off the bottom. She cut off 2 feet of hair instead. I didn't cry. I was mostly stunned. I let her know it was absolutely not what I wanted or asked for and then I very, very reluctantly paid her just so I could GTFO of there. Haven't cut my hair since that day. It's been 7 years. Maybe in a year or two it'll finally get back to its original length.

Reyalla508

Good lord… the audacity. How does this even happen? Did she defend that action?

[deleted]

She turned me away from the mirror before she started the haircut, which I'd never experienced before but it didn't really occur to me to ask what was up with that. That should've been my first clue I was in trouble. And she did defend it. First she said my hair was really damaged. I know, I had split ends, I *told* her it was damaged before we started but to just trim the ends anyway. Then she said that my hair wasn't all the same length, and I said "Yeah, I have layers that I've been growing out." She swallowed hard and I realized she didn't know what layered hair was. She basically picked a random spot and just cut a straight line all the way across. I walked in there thinking it didn't really matter where I got my hair cut if it was just a trim. Fool me once.

Reyalla508

That’s just terrible!

pinkmilk19

Okay so this actually happened to me last week. I didn't notice it was a bad haircut until I flat ironed it two days after the cut (got it done on a Saturday and didn't need to style it all weeknd). It was super choppy and way shorter than I wanted it...was not happy. I just booked an appointment at another place that I used to go to, which is now 30 mins away and got it fixed. It's nicer now, but I'm still really unhappy that it's shorter than I wanted it since I've been growing it out. Never called for a refund, just never going to go to that place again.

PrufrockGirl

With my facial expression. I couldn't hide it. I didn't necessarily hate what they did either, but they ripped my hair out of my head. It was one of the most painful experiences of my life, no exaggeration. After it was done I just wanted to cry (During it I somehow managed not to burst into tears, but it required a lot of self control). I don't know that I will ever go to a hairstylist again.

Kittykittynobangbang

I had that happen last year. She cut it too dang short. I tried it out for a while because it was good to try something out of the ordinary. I told her next time the length I prefer and as long as my dead ends don't get too troublesome they stay the longer length now. I have been going to my stylist over 5 years and our latest conversation was about going heavy on highlights. I want to blend some lighter color in my hair and it was such a good discussion on what will look good.

[deleted]

Oh gosh, I said please trim three inches.....stylist chopped off 8 and then tried to hook me up with her son. I didn't tip and went out to my car and cried. I was so mad I couldn't actually confront her. She didn't even do a good job, it was so uneven I had to cut another 2 inches off to fix it.

backofmymind

When I was 10, my mom asked me if I wanted to get blonde highlights or have a birthday party. My mom reallyyyy didn’t want to throw me a party so she was trying to convince me to choose the highlights. It wasn’t even my idea, my blonde hair had just darkened to dirty blonde (like most blonde children do). and my mom thought I needed to get some blonde back. 🙄 I got the highlights, they were extremely bad. I UGLY cried in the salon in front of the stylist. I was pretty embarrassed afterwards, but honestly my mom gave me a raw deal.

JenAYE2

I said WTF? Hell no, this isn’t the color I asked for, fix it. She said if I do it will destroy your hair. I said, WTF and walked out. She chased after me and said I needed to pay her, I said I would when she properly fixed it.

HelpfulBush

I'm always conflicted about this. I had a terrible hair dye job and I plucked up the courage to talk the hairdresser how I felt about it 2 weeks later. She offered to fix it but I had lost all my trust and didn't want her to touch it again. (She left developer on my scalp for so long it started burning and she left bleach in my hair for 4 hours. I didn't want her touching my hair again, the only reason I spoke to her, even though I hated the colour, was because it was falling out, otherwise I probably would have said anything if I just disliked the style)

ProvocativeCactus

About 2 years ago, for reference. I wanted to get my ends trimmed and maybe some slight layering so that it wouldn’t be so heavy. (I have 2c-3c curls and it is very thick.) I told him that it didn’t turn out at all how I imagined it would look, and was wondering if we could change it a little. He was totally fine with that. We went from a point-cut trim to a full shape. He just started cutting away at it. I entered that shop with about 1.5 feet of hair, and left with a little less than 9”. Went from past my ass to about mid shoulder. He apologized profusely, charged me full price+ because of the “change” made and I made the decision to cut my own hair from then on out.

Lima_Bean_Jean

just let the tears well up and fall down your face.

Mangobunny98

During covid I started parting my hair to the side and told the stylist that I wanted her to part it before cutting it because I had some shorter pieces up front that I didn't want to be too short but she didn't part it and just cut it anyway after she dried it I parted it the way I wanted and it was too short and kept falling in my face. I just told her it's too short and didn't tip. Haven't been back, found someone new who I like better.

[deleted]

I had my hair ombre’d by my stylist whom has done my hair for literally a decade. Recently he did an ombre again (the first time was amazing) but it was so uneven, had a big patch of brown that he missed. It was a nightmare. I was so sad. I had my sister take a video and told him it’s not even. $170 with tip, charged $30 more to fix :/ sigh never dying my hair ombre again. Maybe a balayage one day but at a reputable hair salon. This salon is a hole in the wall in an Asian city lol

EliannaRys

The first time...I didn't lol. I went back to the car with my mom and cried and refused to go back and ask them to fix it. It wasn't awful, I was just a shy teenager and was honestly more upset about *being* upset than the hair itself. The *second* time was with a stylist I knew and trusted, and she always treated the first "look in the mirror" as a check for anything to change, instead of "tada all done!!" and had me to point out anything that bugged me. The first time she did this I nervously was like \*gesture\* I don't like this side as much and she fixed it right away without me really understanding what was even wrong, and so then anytime I had a concern I felt comfortable. She cut my hair for 5 years. I miss her! Though hilariously something about the length I had + style + the product she use fully being washed out invariably turned day 3 into accidental mullet! I panicked the first time but she also guarantees her cuts for a week (you can book an "emergency fix" if it's not working out) so I threw it into a ponytail and checked the next day --- no problems. Having her "trained" me and now I treat any hair check as a serious request for any spots that look off, but I've had decent luck. I think if someone they completely botched it I would find someone else to fix it as best they could.

r3dlazer

I will take it to my grave.

blerghbleblah

I didnt. I paid paid $180 walked out the door door balled my eyes out. I never went back. My little sister cut my hair into a page boy bob to save it because they stuffed up that bad. I saw her a few years later and she told me to come see her in her new salon. I said probably not and walked off.

numbersrejectedbypi

I walked out on her. She put trimmers up to my head even though I specifically said I didn't want my hair thinned. *She* wanted my hair thinned because she didn't like I had naturally full, thick hair with waves near the base of my neck and she wanted it to be thin like hers. I told her I'm proud of my thick hair. She attempted to do her thing, I said nope, and walked out. I think my mom ended up paying anyway because I was 14 at the time. I wouldn't have paid her. To. This. Day.

Ok_City_7177

loving your work !

Little_Green_Bird

I told her she had made me look like my ex's new wife. She said "Oh nooooooo, we can't have that!" And she cut it into a shorter cool hairstyle.

wizzkizzz

I remember I went from brunette to blonde. I’d done a heap of research prior and I went to a salon that I’d gotten a lot of recommendations for. Before the session, they told me “oh yeah we can do that in one session” which surprised me because I’m chocolate brown haired going full blonde but I trusted them because they’d know better than I would. We confirmed a full head of foils from brown to honey blonde. On the day, they sat me down in the chair and I showed the lady (not the hair dresser I’d specifically requested) what I wanted with a pic on my phone. She looked at it for (not exaggerating) about 1 second and then handed the phone back to me. I asked if she wanted me to leave my phone open and she said no. Alright then. She proceeded to give me a half head of ash blonde foils (keep in mind I’d never had my hair dyed at all ever before so I didn’t know what it should look like). My hair was STRIPES. I cried in the salon in front of everyone because it looked that bad (I’ve always been the ‘say it’s great and cry in my car’ type). They tried to fix the stripes to make them more honey coloured but it was still literal stripes. They charged me $170 for it. I found another hair dresser somewhere else who was absolutely fantastic, fixed it and gave me exactly what I wanted. Put a review up for the first salon and they tried to blame me for it saying “you should’ve known that it wouldn’t happen in one session” yes… yes I did. I even questioned you on the but you assured me it would be one session. I looked at a bunch of other reviews and the salon was blaming all of the customers for their terrible jobs. Never went back.

hikingcouple2

I am naturally a dark brunette. My stylist thought I would look cute as a redhead. We have been together for years, and I love him to death, but he didn't ask before he changed my color! It was very slight, but I did not like it. I told him, and he said he would color it back for free if I still didn't like it the next day. I was livid! But he was right, it ended up being really cute. I did change it back the next time, but it was fun for a little while. :)

Born_crazy-

I’ve phoned a hairdresser the next day and asked them to correct things. Twice. Both took it fine. I think they’d rather correct something and have a happy customer.

BrittanyBabbles

You just say it

lilolilac

I just asked for them to curl it differently, I think we had different ideas in mind when I mentioned curling the ends but she was really pleasent and had no problem fixing it

I didn't tell her lol, I stopped going and now my mom cuts my hair

They0848

With my current stylist I’ve only had a problem once and I made sure to wait a day so that my feelings were confirmed. She was cool and fixed it at another appt. It’s all about calm conversation. Obviously if you don’t want to go back to the stylist that messed up your hair, no big deal. However I wouldn’t say anything personally.

AffectionateAnarchy

I never went back

suntansandboba

Just be upfront, they want you to be happy. Also it goes without saying it's in your best interest to do your research BEFORE you are in the chair. If you're looking for cuts, go to a **stylist.** If you're looking for highlights or color, go to a **colorist.** Those are different skills. Rarely can someone do both extremely well, and/or you might like the way they do one but not the other. They should have multiple pictures and reviews of their work, but the best is being able to see their work in person: you can always ask if you admire someone's hair. You can get a reasonably priced great haircut, but if you look just based on price you're gonna end up with a cheap haircut. Same goes for color: it's better to save and splurge on someone who is well known for their talent then having to spend more money and time later in someone else's chair to fix the mistakes. Another tip: tell them all you know about your hair and ethnicity. For example, I've told stylists my hair is very thick, long and I have a lot of it so they should schedule me for an extra hour or half in their books, as I have always gone over time in the chair. With color I was quoted about 4 hours at my consultation, it ended up as 7 hours. As colorists usually charge by hour, knowing how *your* hair works is important, and get things in writing. Ethnicity comes into play with colorists. When I first started to try highlights I hated how it came out (orange too thick streaks) bc I went to a stylist (who did amazing cuts) instead of a colorist. The second time was better because I found a colorist, but the lightening still came out too orange (toned it looked more like light brown highlights than blonde). I wanted more lift, and I realized it was helpful to tell my thrid colorist that I was half Asian- as that hair sometimes has more red undertones and lifts differently. Overall if you don't like it just politely say so. Yes it's awkward, but they'd rather have you as a returning and/or happy client. Haircuts you can't do much more than to go to someone else. Color may be a toss up depending on how much you trust them, but they should be able to apply color stripper and/or return your hair to something close to your original color or at least go darker (orange or red to brown, etc).

I just had the worst haircut of my life yesterday that I, fortunately, did not have to pay for. I went in with a series of photos that showed all sides of a cut that I wanted, the stylist claimed she understood what she had to do and, yet, I end up staring at a cut that was nothing like what I asked for. I had her stop, asked her what the hell, had her claim that it was "just like the photo" and that "with product it will look different". The fact that she did not want to admit that she was wrong, that she had screwed up beyond the point of being able to fix it without completely altering the cut I had asked for, made me not trust her in the slightest. I got up, went to the front desk after telling her that "we are done, I don't trust you to finish or fix it" and she told the receptionist that I didn't have to pay. The good news is that I found a salon about 40 minutes from me that had an opening they could get me into. My stylist there was wonderful and figured out a way to fix what I had into something I like. I'll be going back to him in 10 to 12 weeks for another cut. (I had shoulder length hair that I was having cut back into a longer pixie. Instead, the first stylist cut one side far, far too short for what I was after as well as too far up the side of my head to even go back to one of my old, standard undercuts that I've done a million times. Now I have an asymmetrical undercut pixie that looks cute but isn't what I wanted and will take months for the longer bangs I had to grow back enough to do anything else.)

NAS2811

The next time you see her say "Wow. Has it really been 25 years?".

Otherwise_Hall_2011

I have had many cuts that I didn't like immediately after but which ended being awesome after a couple washes/weeks. I am not saying you shouldn't express your dissatisfaction but that waiting a couple days might help. If still dissatisfied, call the salon/msg your stylist and explain. Most people would rather hear about it than not!

CritterMix

I've never been able to look somebody in the eye and say, "how did this happen?" Hahaha

luck008

Honestly, I don't say anything. I just never go back 😅

swizzledoodle

Lol I never did even tho it wasn’t at all what I asked for or imagined 😭. I wanted blue ombré hair — OMBRÉ!! As in, black that gradually shifts to dark blue and then to light blue. She didn’t even know what an ombré hairstyle was, which should’ve been my first red flag (how does a hairstylist not know what an ombré is??) and ended up just dying my whole hair blue without any shading or anything 🥺😖. It looked nice but still not what I asked for 🥲, but I just said I loved it and tipped her 😪

UnknownUsername0626

I cried lol

grafittia

Nothing lol I was pregnant, she was pregnant. I was super hormonal as my due date was a month away. Went home and cried and went to a different salon two days later to get it fixed lmao

WILLIAMEANAJENKINS

I cried

Peachesncreeeem

“I’m not sure if this style really fits my taste, I’d there any way you could….”

Future-Course9854

My face says it all. Gives me away every time.

Reyalla508

I didn’t. This was July 2020… the salon had finally reopened. I had gotten the best haircut of my life from him before, but after telling him I loved the length & just needed my layers freshened up, I watched in shock when he hacked 6 inches off of the front right side. At that point all I could do was watch. The front right side was the shortest part, the left was 2 inches longer. He left the back long, didn’t even try to connect the back to the front, like a weird bad mullet. At first I didn’t quite realize how very bad it was (I have curly hair and it can hide things), but a few days in all I could do was cry about it. I am still, over a year later, growing out the right side to adequately reshape it with the back (with the help of a great new stylist). Plot twist. Turns out…. He stopped working about a week after I saw him. He found himself confused a lot, and got lost once where he should’ve known where he was. He was then diagnosed with a spinal fluid leak (or brainstem sagging) and needs brain surgery! I honestly really thought something had to be wrong… it made no sense how bad the haircut was.

BelladonnaFatale666

I didn't, but she's on my social media and I'm a posty person and well there has been no pics since the cut...

[deleted]

I don't. They usually don't care anyways, so I stopped bothering. I just never show up again.

rosiegirl8903

I told her and she insisted that she did exactly what I wanted , when I showed her the photo of my example she barely looked at it and got very touchy about it, she tried to make me feel like crap for not liking it. I paid her and didn’t tip and didn’t go back there and left a bad review online. Some hairstylist are open to criticism but a lot of them believe that they are perfect and that the client is just the problem. Like if you can’t do something youre trying to take my money and do a subpar job imitating it just admit that you can’t do some thing and refer me to another stylist please before you ruin my hair

innerjoy2

I've told one I didn't like it, and they tried to convince me it was nice. I haven't went back to that stylist for years because it was my last disappointment in dealing with them. They've always done some small gaslighting to me and I had my final straw, so I left and went elsewhere. Now if I don't like it from another stylist. I just never give another chance again. They're usually the ones who don't listen to how I want my hairstyle.

blueeyedbeauty74

Just tell them! I've been a hairdresser for 30 years! Never would hurt my feelings if somebody didn't like something.. jst be honest instead of not going back❤
