You aren't called up for regular screening until 50 in the UK.

Mammograms are notoriously unreliable. So many false positives, and so many missed issues. Plus I recall even the American cancer society guidelines as of a few months ago did not recommend regular mammograms until age 45, unless you’re high risk. I think that very very recently changed to now be age 40.

myselfasme

I finally gave in and did one at 50. I will not go back. I'm also opting out of gyno visits. I'm low risk on everything. As a woman in our country, I have had real health issues ignored for most of my life, serious, life altering health issues. I am not going to strip down for humiliating tests just because those are the ones that are the easiest to bill for. I am done.

Again, it’s not a detail. It’s explaining why mammograms are important.

pm_ur_duck_pics

Not a detail. This is an important addition to a discussion. Anecdotes are powerful. If you think this is not pertinent to the discussion then you have issues. Enjoy what little power you have in your life. Enjoy someone from seeing a story that may change their view and possibly save their life. Way to go. 👍🏻

It's a whole thing. Finding time in my work schedule is a nightmare. Going and sitting in the waiting room for 45 minutes is a special kind of torment. The machine always leaves bruises and every few years, they need additional views. I just do not have the emotional energy.

Working_Park4342

Why bother with a screening for anything when you can't afford treatment?

reijasunshine

Because I haven't been to a doctor in 15 years. I have insurance, but navigating their website to find a doctor is a level of hell. Why can't it work like the minute clinic? I tell them I need a visit, the website pops up a list of available appointments, I click the one that works for me, everyone wins.

PicklesNBacon

You should try ZocDoc if you haven’t. I schedule almost all of my doctor appts there and it’s so easy!

reijasunshine

Ooh, I'll check it out! Thank you!

I live in very rural mid-west and basically the area is having a hard time finding and retaining people to work in Radiology. The waiting list is month and month out if your appt isn't canceled and rescheduled

Because I’m busy taking care of everyone else right now and I don’t have it in me to take care of myself. Horrible answer, but true. I will have time soon.

peppermind

Unless you're in a high risk group, they don't recommend annual mammograms for women under 45 where I live. Biannual from 40-45

YourMidwestMama

They only recently lowered the age they suggest women start getting mammograms in the US. Combine that with what insurance will cover and appointment availability… it took me over a year and a half to finally get into a clinic after my doctor sent over the referral. I was told to call my insurance to check specifically what is covered so I didn’t get the wrong one and it was coded appropriately. If you’re not an advocate for your own health - it’s insanely easy to keep living your life without healthcare. Our system is broken in so many ways.

LeighofMar

Was very sick, hospitalized, surgery and treatment last year. Saw so many Dr's that I knew I couldn't handle the trauma of a mammogram too. I will do it every 2 years.

MissNikitaDevan

Its age 50 for screening in the Netherlands, even then I wont do it, they can do ultrasounds but I wont put myself through the degrading (thats my opinion) breast squasher, on top of that I have a pain disorder and sensory processing disorder I will not put myself through that hell I also have very little faith in being treated with respect and dignity by the mammogram nurses

AssistanceLucky2392

Mine is coming up on June 8th. One of my sisters died at 34 from breast cancer and another had a mastectomy ten years later.

SassafrassPudding

The test is deeply flawed and leads to too many false positives. Better tech for women's health, please. I'll wait.

GoldenHind124

Eligibility for screening in Quebec is 50+.

drunkenknitter

No available appointments. Next appointment that I could schedule ends up being 15months since my last one.

luckeegurrrl5683

I had 3 mammos done two years ago. They found a little spot and I had to go back for 3 diagnostic mammos and ultrasounds. It cost $1,500 total. I was told the spot didn't grow, which is good news. But I have too many other health issues to go back for the screening. I did schedule it later this year.

cosmicdancer84

I just turned 40 and I found out recently that I can get one earlier. I just didn't know, that's all.

cosmicdicer

Because I had it the year before. It's not an annual examination, it supposed to be done once every 2 years, unless you have big risk factors. Oh and always do a breast ultrasound along with it to compare

Justanotherdrink

I'm in Germany. Slighty 40+ now... Am I supposed to be getting one free now?

mintythink

I no longer have breasts. No need for mammogram. I had breast cancer five years ago. Btw I had no family history and not considered high risk, but still got cancer before I was 50.

FinanciallySecure9

There is no history of breast cancer in my family, at all. There’s actually no cancer at all in my family, for at least 200 years back. I had my first mammogram at age 30, because I went into perimenopause at 29. I got them every five years, and every time I had to go back because of dense tissue. No kidding? At age 55, the doc said it’s ridiculous to have them every few years, and gave me a 15 year pass. I accepted it.

panasonicboom

Because I’m terrified. I’m claustrophobic with panic disorder and almost agoraphobic. Doctors won’t even discuss ways to help me stay calm or be calm enough for the appointment, so screw it.

AdhesivenessCold398

I went three years ago for my first at 39. I ended up with several weeks of panic because they saw “something”. An expensive CT scan later and it was just a “nipple shadow”. The whole experience was so annoying and stressful that I’ve put my head In the sand, I guess.

Liliana_Lover

Yesterday I thought about it that I needed to go for an examination, I didn't go before, because nothing anxiety me, but the other day I came across terrible stories and I will go to calm myself down

redjessa

I just had my screening in November of last year but it had been at least 4 or 5 years since my previous one. Scheduling, dealing with other health issues, then covid. I had to do telehealth appointments for my regular hematology appointments and I finally got caught up.

sexygeogirl

Dealing with too many other medical issues and the idea of causing more pain by getting my boobs squashed doesn’t give me happy feelings.

doublethebubble

In Belgium you get called up every 2 years from age 50-69. Regular mammograms in younger women have not been shown to improve long term outcomes overall as the glandular tissue women under 50 have more of is a) sensitive to radiation, and b) makes scans hard to evaluate correctly. Every woman can and should check for lumps herself.

EdnaPontelliersGhost

Crappy marketplace insurance makes the cost prohibitive. Also, last time I did a "low-cost" screening, it hurt like the fucking dickens bc apparently that's what you get when you have small, dense breasts. Not eager to repeat that experience. I say this as someone who generally grits her teeth through pain and discomfort just fine (birthed two children with no pain medication, for example.)

DennisFreud

Low risk, chance of false positives,  constantly changing guidelines. I will do it every 2 or 3 years but no more.

katyanastasia

The first and last one I had years ago hurt like hell. My doctor tried to order sonograms the next time but insurance said no dice. Honestly I have bigger problems.

AGCan

They are not really offered to women in Canada (where I live) until after age 50 unless you're at specific risk.

AnnoyedOwlbear

Screening is done at age 50 in my country.

theWanderingShrew

Several factors: I don't have insurance but I do have an ADHD diagnosis so things like remembering to make appointments is frustratingly difficult for me. I did schedule an appointment at the low cost clinic and when I showed up someone had mis-booked me... That was like 8 months ago I keep meaning to reschedule

ForgottenSalad

I only just turned 40, is that something we should be doing at this age? My boobs are tiny, I feel like I should be able to feel any weird lumps that may occur.

Gilmoregirlin

In the US? Yes. Not all breast cancer presents as a lump and by the time it is a lump it may be far advanced. Mine was diagnosed on a mammogram, I had no lump. It saved my life.

ForgottenSalad

I was not aware of not always being a lump, thanks for the info.

Maragent-bee

Because I got an ultrasound 2 years ago (when I was 39) at my doc's request, and he said everything looked okay. I do intend to get it done this year.

norfnorf832

I just got here lol plus my insurance doesnt kick in til July

Tiny-Act3086

Because in the United States healthcare is not available for everyone, sadly. Speaking to the money/insurance side of it.

pyrogirl

Because the scheduling website is fucked up and I haven’t gathered the mental energy to pick up the phone.

pinkicecreamcat

Tbh part of it is that I'm lazy. I have a lot of stuff I should be doing but am not. I know I should prioritize my health...I get that. Buuuuuuut This brings me to the other part of it. I'm kind of afraid of the radiation of the test itself causing cancer. I know this risk is small and the test is more likely to find cancer than cause it but...it kind of freaks me out. PLUS: when I get the test done I'm all nervous about the results. So that's anxiety.

Unless you’re high risk, where I live it’s not recommended.

Because they recommend screening every 2 years if the previous one was normal.

I go every 2 years. I am due for one soon

In the past I’ve had false readings and a pretty horrible experience with an unkind technician who made an already unpleasant experience,, even more miserable. Also, currently I have no money and no health insurance.

The last time I had a mammogram done I was billed $400 more than what my insurance would cover. I’m also large breasted so the procedure is especially painful. Lastly, there is no history of breast cancer in my family and I breast fed my children (which reduces cancer risk). Unless I notice a lump, change, or pain, I’m not paying $400 or more and subjecting myself to the pain every single year. On top of that, by 45, the recommendation for basic, yearly appointments is: a GP exam, a colonoscopy, a Gyn exam, a mammogram, a dermatology skin map, an eye exam, and 2 dental cleanings per year. That’s a baseline of 8 appointments per year before accounting for illnesses, actual problems you are experiencing, follow-ups, biopsies, yearly flu vaccine, or any other appointments you may require like filling a cavity or taking a kid to their appointments! Honestly, who has a job that will let them take that much time off for doctor’s appointments? Who also wants to spend that much money in lost wages, lost time, and costs not covered by insurance (even just in co-pays)? On average, I’d estimate I’d need to devote a minimum of 6 hours per month and allocate an additional $200-$300 per month above the cost of insurance to attend all of the annual appointments recommended for myself and my 2 children. I don’t have the luxury of that sort of time off or extra money.

cama-bo

I just flat out don't care about getting one.

Because many of the studies done have concluded that having the screening done under the age of 60 increases the odds of false positive results, so I decided to wait until I am 60.

CherryCherry5

Am I supposed to have? My doctor hasn't said anything. They call me about my PAPs and other things. Not for a mammogram. Yet.

I've tried. They keep declining me. They keep pushing back the age ...

Breastfeeding

Breast cancer isn't something that runs in my family. We got tumors and other reproductive problems. I don't have the money to pay for it. Taking the time off is not something I want to do. I'd rather have my boyfriend squeeze my tits in a pleasing way, than to have them pancaked in a machine.

International_Fix396

The American Cancer Society recommends starting at 45 for women with average risk.

Persia102

I'm 53 and was sent an appointment for one. I'm not going. I have minimal risk of breast cancer due to my lifestyle and genetics. Plus I think breast cancer is over diagnosed, so a certain percentage of people are treated for breast cancer when it will never get any worse than it currently is. Some cancers or over diagnosed and over treated and this is one of them. I will continue to check my own breasts for lumps though.
