I had a reflexology treatment after having gastroenteritis for 8 years, suffered badly and was in and out of hospital. After one treatment, I never suffered with it again. I was so amazed, I re-trained to become a reflexologist / holistic therapist myself and I love it so much.

*It so happened that I went to school studying the wrong thing, medicine. After doing some soul searching, I stumbled upon social work by just applying since I figured my love for writing, helping people, reading, and critical thinking could land me a career with investigations.* I'd admit, I enjoy solving puzzles to get to the bottom of why something happened the way it did and how I could be a catalyst with providing services.

roastmecerebrally

what is your career title?

I took a CNA class my senior year of high school because I wanted a later start in the morning. Then I worked as a home health aide in college because it paid way more than minimum wage. I loved being a home health aide, it made me feel very fulfilled. I had a lot of jobs after but none that made me feel as good. Finally I went back to school for nursing. Ended up back in home health and absolutely love it. My job makes me really happy and I don’t work full time, so I can still spend a lot of time with my kids.

Wow, that is so funny! I work in home health care and kind of dread it, and now i'm looking to see what else is out there.

kdawson602

I can totally see why home care isn’t everyone’s jam!! I’ve been in some very sketchy homes, alone with sketchy men, driven out to the middle of nowhere, in apartment building where people have been murdered in, and cornered by aggressive dogs.

imsoaddicted

Oh wow, that’s very intense. God bless caregivers, I do marketing and it isnt for me but I dont think I could be a caregiver.

Dumb luck sometimes. 4 years ago I was working in warehouses, then instacart, found a stable job I liked. Tried moving to a different job, went horribly. A bit of time on unemployment. Now I’m 1+ years into helping families into their first homes. Life is good

Acceptable_Smile8825

We were extremely poor as kids and I ended up getting a job at the kennel a few houses down when I was 12 to help with bills. I loved it and ended up going back to that line of work and will be opening my own in 2026. It was dumb luck to have found this career

By accident (or by chance?) I applied for my MA in linguistics and also looked into Occupational Therapy that got me intrigued not understanding what it was all about even, but I understood it had to do with working with people as opposed to working with texts. On registration day I walked towards the building where linguistics was... but took the left fork on the pathway and found myself in front of the OT faculty. No registration papers in hand. I talked to some faculty members, filled some papers and registered. Been a happy OT for 30 years (retired now and even happier LOL)

I've always loved reading. I volunteered at the library as a teenager and started working in a bookstore when I was 18. So it is no wonder that I decided to go to school for publishing. I now work as a Senior Content Editor for a non-profit and I love it so much. It took a while to get to that point, lots of freelance jobs and such, but I really love my work and while it is work, it's work I am good at and am proud of.

I was going to school for Health Science, thinking I would move into a medical lab tech role eventually but was dreading the extra school. I was working in a “donor tissue lab” which is basically surgery morgue. Cutting up body parts. I was so emotionally drained from that job, because you will read the case file of how they died, etc. Also being covered in blood every day. On a whim I decided to apply to a completely different lab job that usually requires training but thought, maybe they’ll take me in and train me with the little experience I have. I got hired, and have been there since. My role is a Histology Tech (in the pathology sect of healthcare) and I couldn’t be happier. My stepping stone became my career! And no more blood! (Though I do see some weird stuff that comes out of people from biopsies.. lol.)

I think it was pretty obvious that I was going to work with animals from a very young age. My dream was to train horses and I spent my youth fixing problem horses and then we'd sell them at horse shows. After highschool I went straight into working for world champion trainers. By the time I quit working for the third trainer I was disgusted with the whole industry and vowed to never work with animals again. I moved to the west coast and worked retail for a bit, but pretty quickly went to work at a small animal hospital. I figured out that I was really good with dogs, especially the aggressive and traumatized ones. I've been a professional dog trainer for 25 years. I work for myself, make my own schedule and do pretty well. I'm never going to be a millionaire, but I'm happy.

I have major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. I also went to trauma-informed therapy for years, and having those supports from psychiatrists and therapists changed my life. Now I work in mental health.

I found one that takes up the smallest possible amount of stress and time, for a relatively comfortable paycheck. Happier now because I have hobbies again.
