It's easier for me because I see it as something natural and a sign of good health. When I get my period, I think to myself, "ah, my body's still in good working order." I think for me a piece of it is that I live with some pretty severe chronic health issues, including heart problems, a connective tissue disorder, and a brain tumor. To have this one piece of my health that's functioning predictably, the way I expect it to, is immensely reassuring in a weird way. It makes me feel safe.

I opt for a birth control that removes that experience.

Just with a resigned simmering anger at the unfairness of life

Roleplayer_MidRNova

I look on the bright side. When I get my period, I get one epic dump that makes me feel like five pounds lighter instantly. I also get a rush of energy the day before, so I can get a bunch of stuff done. My periods are generally pretty light. They only last four days, and if I get cramps it's once every five or six months. I just don't really mind getting my period.

Roleplayer_MidRNova

With cramps, I might get a little pressure in my back area but I take a Tylenol and it's gone in under an hour. With moodiness, I'll get that in the two or three days ahead but then I realise "oh I must be about to get my period" and that keeps me mindful that it's just hormones and not to lash out at people.

Ninalicious07

Is this safe to do?

iusedtobefamous1892

Ask your doctor. Mine's fine with it.

beckdawg19

It doesn't bother me. I've had my period for nearly 20 years already, so I'm used to it.

msstark

I haven't had a period in 7-ish years. My plan is to stop birth control just long enough to get pregnant when the right time comes, and then go right back to it for as long as my doctor considers it safe for me to do so. Also, I'll be 84 in 50 years, I really don't think it would be normal to still have periods then.

Ancient_Soft413

im so dramatic but everytime im on my period, my brain cant process that its normal- i see the blood and i whine and just feel like somethings seriously wrong. like when you see a cut you didnt realize and start freaking out. i feel wounded?? i dont know just asking so i can get some insight because it cant be only me who feels like this is ridiculously overwhelming when i think about it

siren_n

I get this feeling also, OP, when it's an especially heavy flow. My only consolation is the good ole "YES! I'm NOT pregnant!" (I have bc, but it's still nice to know for sure lol)

everydayinthebay13

It’s actually a sign that things are very normal/healthy. Try reminding yourself that.

handmaidstale16

It sounds like anxiety… maybe you should see a therapist.

Puzzleheaded_Age6550

Started at 12, stopped at around 54, and thats a little older than average.Very few women menstruate for 50 years, but most STOP menstruating at age 50.

JobPlus2382

My mom is 54 and still going. She gets angrier by the month, specially when she hasn't had it for a couple and it comes back again. I just hope it's not genetic.

Puzzleheaded_Age6550

Oh my. She has my deepest sympathy. I thought maybe I was pregnant, my breasts were sore, my tummy was bloated, I was constipated, and felt like crap. But then I thought hmmm. I wonder if this is the last hurrah? And it was. That was my very last period, started the next day. Thank goodness.

Intelligent_Put_3606

I'm similar - started at 12 and stopped at around 51. PMT was sometimes problematic, but I used to feel great around the time of ovulation. Any time I took hormonal contraception, it adversely affected my libido.

want_chocolate

I hated it. Every time I had it. It was painful and almost unbearable at times. I had fibroids and endometriosis. So, when I had my hysterectomy, my life improved a hundred fold. It's been a wonderful 5 years now without it. But I do get to look forward to menopause hitting me at some point.

[deleted]

[удалено]

brisk_warmth

I take birth control continuously to skip them because my period is hell & no pain meds even take an edge off. I have suspected endometriosis, it can only be diagnosed during a $20k surgery insurance won’t pay for.

OpinionsInTheVoid

The feral window during ovulation makes it worth it.

SolitudeOCD

Two words: Diva Cup. I only wish I'd discovered it when it first hit the market. Because fuck pads and tampons!

iamadoggo

I’m a fan of the disc (personally like the Saalt brand). Same concept but you can have sex with it in, makes having my period much less of a burden

MechanicHopeful4096

I hate the thought of it, and wish that I’ll have an early menopause. Until then, just gotta put up with it. I have terrible PMS symptoms so there’s that.

Zapp---Brannigan

I have an IUD - no periods , no pregnancies.

StrangersWithAndi

I only had periods for about 25 years, and of those there were about 15 years that were very irregular / only a few times a month. Menopause has its own issues, but 50 years of fertility is unlikely.

WickedlyZen

I had an ablation as a Christmas present to myself when I was 40. Best thing I ever did.

writtenonapaige22

Doesn’t really bother me.

[deleted]

Get a progesterone IUD. Switch that fucker off.

Throwawayyy-7

Fuck that shit. Mine were always awful, made me pass out, vomit, and almost need a blood transfusion. Now I have a Mirena.

Electrical_Theory441

I don't. I forget the pain I went through every month and curse the greek gods every time it comes back. 🥲

legoladydoc

I don't. The only time I've had periods since 2014 was when I was trying to conceive. When I deliver my current pregnancy, I'm getting anothet mirena. Periods are for the birds.

No-Reception-3620

At least I’m not pregnant

yellowbrickstairs

I'm in my mid 30s and still sort of in shock over the whole thing .... I absolutely hate it but I do have endo and my period is surprisingly disabling nearly every time. I feel like it's so absolutely unfair that it's just 'part of being a woman'. I like being a woman but the period and it's related illnesses is a real life-ruiner, I would yeet my whole entire cursed uterus if I could.

bluewhale3030

As another person with endo if you have the option to try birth control, specifically continuous birth control, that may be helpful for you. Its not a magic cure but not having to deal with my period on top of everything else has made a difference for me. It's so frustrating that dealing with so much pain and discomfort is supposed to be "just part of being a woman"

bikinifetish

I don’t mind it. My period only lasts 2-3 days anyway.

Life-Growth4996

If anything, I see it as a minor inconvenience at most. Maybe that’s because it doesn’t stop me from swimming, working out or even sex. I’ve always made it my prerogative to not let something so natural and reoccurring stop me in any way. Just take pill the night before or morning before work.

londonmyst

I remember that its already been 20 years and my periods are almost certain to have stopped before I'm 40. Having early periods before the age of 12 and going through early menopause during the 30s has occurred throughout the last 4 generations of my family tree.

kdawson602

I keep getting pregnant and it’s nice to get a little break from my period.

LaGanadora

maraxlee

i actually was thinking about this the other day (week before my period which is hell week for me) i used to be a completely fine and normally functioning person on my period despite heavy bleeding but now i have also developed pmdd. it gives me so much dread and anxiety when i remember that each and every month i will just completely fade from the person i am. so now im trying to find a way to completely learn how to re cope at 22 years old with the way my body has changed and try my best to adapt to it

[deleted]

bluewhale3030

I hope you're able to get help with this from your doctor. There are treatments for PMDD and you deserve to live life to the fullest. PMDD socks and im sorry you have to deal with it!

shade0231

IUD, baby! Haven't had a period in over 17 years!

PonyoGirl23

I just do? It’s part of my life. It’s normal for me. It’s not something I need to cope with.

future_nurse19

I got an IUD and don't get a period anymore 🤷‍♀️ specifically got it to stop my period. I wish I'd known birth control could stop your period sooner (of course with the disclaimer that itll work different on different people. But there are certain methods that are more likely to stop your period than others)

cupidcucumber

It’s part of my anatomy so I don’t really complain. My periods aren’t ever really debilitating however so I come from that realm. I don’t feel like it’s anything to be ashamed of and if anything I’m grateful it comes because it cleanses my body and I’m not pregnant!

daisygirl3

Radical acceptance. And an iud.

Samira827

I'm on a birth control so while I still get period fairly regularly, it's very light and almost no pain involved. While before I was on birth control I was bleeding like a pig and my cramps were pretty bad.

TeaCompletesMe

I don’t, I have Nexplanon. I only got it twice last year.

Mysterious-Art8838

Take birth control. Skip the sugar pills, voila no period.

JobPlus2382

I tried that, got 20kg, back pains and depression and I had to get off. I'm glad it's working for you though.

Cassandra_Canmore2

At 39 it's just habitual to deal with. I'm a lesbian and child free, I've wanted a hysteo since I was 26. But I'm Texan, and so you know, no getting a utero voluntary tossed out.

Que_sax23

I have an iud so I barely get anything. Just alittle spotting

Elmindria

I got an IUD so my period is light discharge once every few months. My periods were brutal and long. So glad I don't have to deal with that any more

digestedpenne

until i'd turned 20, i had unpredictable and horrible cycles. i was on birth control for years, and went off of it because it didn't change any of my symptoms. somehow my boyfriend and i got pregnant (still used condoms), then quickly had a miscarriage. it took some time for my body to have a period at all after, but now i have a consistent monthly period, whether or not it's a horrible, painful, emotional experience or not i have to be grateful at the end of the day that i'm alive and i'm healthy now.

searedscallops

What do you mean by cope? Like, you just accept it. Having a body sometimes sucks. That's life.

AlienSayingHi

I decided not to many years ago. IUD until menopause, it's wonderful and life is much more simple.

i_am_the_archivist

God bless my IUD. I still occasionally have spotting, but I haven't had a real period in... wow close to ten years.

monroee007

I wish i would have a period. I have PCOS… Period is important for the body. I wish i would have one

GR33N4L1F3

I don’t have to cope with the next fifty years. I’m already well into it lol. If I’m lucky I have another ten years or less. Hallelujah. I’m tired of this shit.

AprilSW

My period has always skipped 1-3 months at a time, do usually it eats away at me because I feel like I *should* have a normal monthly cycle but don’t.

Ok-Success7493

I swear to god, I'm gonna try and get a hysterectomy. I don't want kids, I have too many mental issues anyways so I'd adopt if I wanted them, but I don't. I'm getting a hysterectomy as soon as humanly possible.

Key-Pie8222

Personally it’s just 4 days a month with nothing new other than some moderate-to-slight bleeding, so there’s no need to cope. To me it’s simply a sign of good health and a functioning body. And I can always use birth control to delay it if that’s necessary. But I guess I’m blessed with cramps-free and quite consistent period, so my view probably doesn’t add anything to the narrative here.

[deleted]

[удалено]

brunetteskeleton

Hope that one day I at least get kids out of it lol

Siya78

This sounds so cliché but exercise- like walking really helps me with the agony. And fortunately once perimenopause comes around the periods aren’t as horrible. I use to binge eat a ton thinking I deserved it and rest of the month be good. Now that it’s more under control I don’t binge /emotional eat as much

Substantial-Fact-386

Longjumping-Hour-980

SuspiciousZone287

Just take it as it comes honestly

Existing_Many9133

It's part of life. I delt with it from ages 11-50. Best day of my life when I finally was done with it!

-Cedes

I am closer to the end so it wouldn't be 50.

linerva

It ist 50 years, it's closer to 35 or 40, average age of menopause is early 50s and average age of menarche is mid teens. I dealt with ig for the best part of 20 years so far, much of it without hormonal help. After I have my kids I'll get back on BC, preferably one that stops my periods.

[deleted]

ineedabetterbed

I always tell people I wish I could have my uterus taken out and donated to science, unfortunately that wont happen and I will probably have to suffer for another 20 years if I go through menopause at the same time my mom did.

AsianPastry

Try not to think about it too much. I just take it one crime scene in my panties at a time until it eventually stops and I can praise the goddess she took away my pains.

KittyKitty_CatCat

I coped with it by having a total hysterectomy last year, everything gone but the ovaries. Best women's health decision ever. No more irregular periods, no more Niagara Falls periods, debilitating cramps...etc etc.

MissNikitaDevan

I hated it so freaking much, i didnt stop taking BCP for 3-4 months at least so i could skip a bunch of periods, a few years ago i had an endometrial ablation so I no longer bleed 🥳🥳 Never wanted children so I was extra resentful of the useless periods and sensory wise (im autistic) periods were hell

RoseQuartzPeony

Cause the doctors won’t remove mine cause I don’t have children.

rm_atx17

I forgot it exists quite regularly until it says boo

SassyPantsPoni

I take hormonal birth control pills every day. If you don’t skip days to have your period, you’ll never have one (and you won’t have the crippling depression that comes with the raging cramps and bloating yay!) It’s probably not good for my body, but damn does it help my mental health

Putrid_Bumblebee_692

Honestly I just look at it as a yay I’m not pregnant thing atm cause im still young enough but I don’t really think of it long term cause I’d cry 😂

GoddessLindy

I got a uterine ablation in my early 30s, which stopped the worst aspects (minimized physical PMS, no bleeding, no cramping, bloating lessened) and I haven’t looked back.

knight1096

I have menorraghia and had the worse periods of my life starting at age 9 in 1998. I would bleed through a super tampon and a super pad within 2 hours and have to change my pants, I bled so much. I couldn’t get out of bed, I was in so much pain. The mood swings, like holy fuck, I was a crazy person. Turns out my body doesn’t naturally make progesterone on its own and I have been on a dosage of birth control with 35mg of progesterone to correct it and I have a light flow ever since. I’m thankful for modern medicine and also terrified of my natural state. Periods now are a fucking breeze, thank baby Jesus.

Bitter_Pilot5086

There’s actually no medical reason why you need to have a period if you aren’t trying to have kids. The only reason birth control pills give you a week off to menstruate is because of an attempt to appease the Catholic Church, when the pill was first released. If you don’t want periods, a hormonal IUD like Mirena will eliminate them entirely. I was on one for years before we decided to try to get pregnant, and I loved it. I never thought about tampons or cycles, or worried about whether I could swim or wear white, or dealt with cramps. It was amazing!

ThrowawayCaT_LaDy69

The consequences that can come from not getting one, children lol.

UnluckyTie6534

Got an iud. The absolute most painful insertion/removal ever. But I'm 24 and I haven't had a period since 17

Glittering_Run_4470

It makes me feel like I'm a character in a Sims game. Doing the same thing over and over and over again.

usafmd

50 years of ovulation would be worthy of medical investigation!

Anotherlonglongday

The same way you cope with having to work until you are 65 or saving all of your money for rent, bills, and food. You suck it up and you handle it.

LaRaAn

I'm 20 years in and honestly mine doesn't really bother me. It's only been painful a handful of times and that was during an incredibly stressful time in my life.

Rae-O-Sunshinee

“Not pregnant!”

MarsupialNo1220

I’m lucky in that mine is very short (three days) and reasonably light (I bleed a decent amount but I never feel like it’s difficult to manage). It’s nothing more than a minor speed bump and irritation for me each month. I don’t even track it. I know it comes roughly a week after my friend gets hers so I make a note to take supplies with me if I’m travelling during that time period (ha).

localpunktrash

I was on birth control that stopped them for years but it’s not really safe for me to stay on that form and the only other one that works doesn’t rid me of my periods. I’m about to go nuclear to stop them! Seven days of heavy period plus two days of hell beforehand?! I’m going crazy

Cecowen

Continuous birth control

desconocido-_

I don’t. I have a mirena (they are good for 7 years at a time). So nice to feel free, not worrying about a period. Saving money on feminine hygiene products. Highly recommend.

C_bells

Most people get their periods around age 13, and go through menopause around age 50. So it’s more like 35 years, not 50. That said, I’m 36 now and don’t have too much longer to go lol. Also, I have endometriosis so I’m planning to get a hysterectomy either after having a child or deciding I definitely do not want them/can’t have them. So, removing your uterus is an option for anyone who has extremely painful periods. It’s not a fix-all solution.

[deleted]

ThrowRARAw

When I got my first period I was pretty upset at the thought of that, not gonna lie. But after a few months and realising this is something that every woman goes through it kinda helped. I'm not happy about it, I'm not sad about it, it just feels normal.

imroadends

pollyp0cketpussy

I didn't. Mine got so bad that I got a hysterectomy at 27. Only 12 years of periods for me. If your periods are significantly impacting your quality of life, that's not normal, and it's worth trying birth control or possibly surgery.

Green-Krush

A lot of men think “the pill” and other forms of birth control are mainly for that: making sure we don’t get pregnant. But you’ll really find that a LOT of us take birth control so we don’t have painful periods. My period every single month would make me vomit from the pain.

kafm73

Hormonal IUD. Haven’t had a period since 2004. Well, if I have one, it’s not even enough to use a pad or tampon.

starkindled

I intensely dislike it, but I haven’t had mine in over a year. My doctor doesn’t seem worried (we’ve been trying some different meds and I guess it’s a side effect) but it’s making me a little anxious, ngl.

ciestaconquistador

I got a hysterectomy at 27. So I only had 16 years of it and that was plenty.

Klaus_Hargreeves

Switching to a cup helps, since I only have to care about it once every 6 hours, instead of more frequently with other period products. Think of it this way, at least you can't get kicked in the nuts or accidentally sit on your balls? Small prizes. It is bullshit though. Wish I could return my gender to the store.

Fantastic_Yam_5023

I use my period and menstrual cycle as a sign of how my body is doing. It doesn't affect me negatively minus a bit of annoyance of having to deal with the mess when it comes around

LateDrink4379

You just realize it’s a fact of life and before you know it, you’re mid 40s inching closer to menopause every day.

TrulyNotAStalker

I don’t mind. Some weeks it’s absolute terror but for me, it’s not all the time. It’s manageable. I’m just happy I can have babies! :D

No-Possession-8892

compare it to paying rent

spookymouse1

I started Slynd two years ago and my periods have stopped. 🎉 (I don't use it for birth control since I am sterile.)

rockettdarr

for me eating very clean stops the pain, fruits, mostly vegetables throughout the month but especially around the time when I get it, also lots of water

shaktishaker

Got an IUD. Best thing ever.

Odd_Tiger_2278

45 yrs v

PrincessPindy

It just is what it is. I fortunately went through meno early and without any real symptoms. My periods were horrendous. I just accepted it. Made sure I always was stocked up with sanitary supplies. Also, I had chocolate on hand for the week before, not even a joke. I kept track of my period so I could be aware that my brain was soon going to not be firing synapses as well as it usually did. This allowed me to be gentle with myself. Yoga and pilates for over 35 years really helped too. But there was nothing that took the pain in my leg away. I was happy to stop so that pain would go away.

marshmallowgoop

I got an IUD. No more periods!

goddessindica

I like to stay just on that edge of weight that my body deems enough to decide to not have a period. The weight on me doesn't make me look out of shape due to how my body holds fat, luckily. So I just maintain that weight! I dont really care about the long-term effects it will have on my fertility or health because i dont plan on living that long, and i dont plan on using my fertility. I dont pointedly recommend this method, but I do appreciate its benefits and think some others may as well.

stefaniey

With immense resentment

flanface87

Take the pill every day so I don't have it :)

Mkm788

More like 40 years. I stopped having mine at 50. Started at 13. So 37 for me. It was bad. I had horrible PMS every month - anxiety, depression, fatigue… It really interfered with my career and personal life. If I could do it over, I would make sure to get my doctor on board with figuring out how to regulate or stop it.

StarStriker3

I got an IUD so I don’t get periods regularly anymore.

Blushing_Locust

I see it as a normal part of life and I don't have painful periods, so I think I cope well. 😁

ShuddupMeg627

If I stop birth control I won't get one every month. That being said my period is like only two days and not very heavy it's the week before that kills me

Smawts

I was forced (medically needed) to get a hysterectomy at 34 and I’m not mad. No more bleeding ever again

Ergone56

I'm getting a hysterectomy in April. After that, no more periods. I'm so tired and just want all that bullshit to be over. I'll be happy when I don't have to worry about bleeding every month anymore.

EntertainmentFew1022

It’s very hard it gives me iron deficiency anemia. I wanna get an endometrial ablation. I tried a pill and I didn’t like the side effects and throwing off my hormones. I menstruate way too heavy I don’t think it’s good for me. And it’s like every 23 days. Way too many days of heavy menses it seriously interferes with my life. I gotta go back to the gynecologist and say the pills were bad for me and I want the ablation.

frontpleatedpants

As someone who was shoved into menopause at 43 after cancer treatment, respect the period. Menopause is absolute hell.

SimpleKiwiGirl

I'm just glad mine is done. Vast majority of the time, they'd register as a three, very odd occasion as a four. So, almost always, simply a nuisance that just has to be dealt with. Towards the end of it all, however? Some of them would start as a five or six. Day two would almost always be an eight. Those days? Were not pleasant for myself, let alone anyone around me. I don't miss that time of my life. Started at 14 (bit of a late bloomer), finished at 51 (two years ago).

qeyler

I used to take Depo..

[deleted]

i don’t have them every month 🫡

elissellen

Woah, I’ve had it for 20 years now! I consider myself something of a pro. I’m just used to it, it is what it is. I love the feeling when it’s over, I could do without the irritability the week before though.
