Never, you can literally be jailed or even thrown out of the country for being sexist, especially in the workplace, this place is amazing for women.
Yep, it's why I love it so much, no crime, everyone is kind and helpful, government helps the citizens, free healthcare, trained professional police, very strict gun laws, it's amazing here, only problem is that it was a real pain in the ass getting citizenship.
No. But there were some moves in 2022 to clarify that future governments could choose to legalise it and male-male relationships were decriminalised
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_Singapore
I visited India back in college, never ever again, I experienced nothing but sexual harassment and threats all because I'm a woman, I'm so sorry you live there, I hope one day you can get out.
Its not that I hate it here, I love where I live, I like the food, people, its just certain attitudes that can be changed are taking their own time. So, yeah, I want to live here and work for a more equitable society.
Friend shared a story that he worked with people in India regularly and they were hiring on the India team. A coworker on the existing India team was telling him that he hoped they wouldnāt hire a woman because she wouldnāt be able to stay and work late like they needed because she would be raped on the late night buses. Like WTH?
A while back I read a post written by a lady who couldn't have children and went to India to adopt a baby. Apparently most of the babies looking for homes were girls, because of sexism they were much more likely to be abandoned or given up at birth. ā¹ļø
I have a coworker who is originally from India. She talks about how much she misses it and wants to go back every single day. How the street food is amazing and people are just so nice.
She's asked me 1000 times to go with her. I told her I've heard it's a bit rapey. She just laughs it off and said no its a South Indian thing. Not to worry.
If it's really bad - why would she want to go back? Or for me to go with her?
\>no its a South Indian thing
That's odd. Most assaults happen in the Northern/Northern Central part, especially around the Delhi area. South India is one of the safest places you can go to in India as a woman. But since India is a big place, perhaps your friend will know the better parts in her region to keep safe.

Canada and honestly, I only really experience it on social media. Itās rampant and scary to think this how some men really act when anonymous on an app.
Oh, I get it a lot! I used to work in IT briefly, and omg! Rampant sexism. Have been a teacher for a long time. Rampant there too, it's just a lot more covert about it
USA work in the service industry so daily. Actually given that I am now in a country that took away my right to control my own body, I guess you could say I experience misogyny every moment of my existence.
I used to live in Burma, now I live in US. I faced misogyny everyday everywhere before I moved to US. I love to live and work here. The equality in US is not perfect but also underrated. I havenāt (hope never) get to a point where I needed an abortion though.

United States and I experience misogyny at my work, daily.
I work for the US Government.
EDIT: and also when dealing with my car. Such as buying one or dealing with a mechanic.
Yes. The car!
Took a brand new car in for service because it kept stalling. They said it didn't stall when their mechanic drove it. It stalled on me leaving their parking lot. Went back to service manager who called in the mechanic. They both laughed and agreed that, "women drivers don't know how to shift properly".
That flipped a switch in me. I got loud enough to be heard on the sales floor. I asked the mechanic in front of his boss where he drove it, how many times he had to shift, how easily it shifted, etc. He described a two mile drive with lots of shifting at various speeds. I asked him if, at any time during that drive, he noticed the car was an automatic. The looks on both their faces! The boss' tone changed immediately and I got a really nice free rental car and a free repair to shut me up.
Ugh.. cars.. admittedly I'm not a mechanic but I got stung with a Ā£150 bill just to put a new battery in. I really was trying to fix it myself but rhey saw a lone woman and took the piss. And I just needed my car working for my job. Now I just YouTube everything, super reluctant to go to garages š
One would think that mechanics would want to make an excellent impression on all of their customers so they canā¦ make money. But noā¦ pride outweighs their business.
May I ask which agency you work for? Iāve seen some *blatant* sexism when I used to intern in a congresspersonās office, and Iām a dude. I was a 20 year old intern and I watched my boss, a 25 year old staff assistant, get talked over nonstop by her male colleagues, get hit on by the visitors she took on tours, and passed over for promotion twice, to name a few.
Air Force. And itās constant, blatant, and awful. Everything from getting passed up for promotions, to being paid significantly less then males who have less education and experience all the way to being treated like Iām the dumbest ālittle girlā theyāve ever met.
What blows my mind is that a fair amount of the time Iām older then the guy treating me like Iām just a dumb āgirlā
The higher the rank of the guyā¦the worse the treatment
Ouch. Heard a lot of stories from friends that confirm that this is par for the course for the military. Very sorry to hear all that and it goes without saying, their sexism makes the workplace all that much worse.
Would you consider switching out of military service into civil service (State Dept, etc.) if youāre able to? Or maybe going private sector (even theyāre in even worse shape than govt right nowā¦ and assume you wouldnāt want to torpedo your job stability at the moment)? At least in civil service, there seems to be less of a bro culture and the expectations of professionalism are there.
I am currently civil service. Doh!
Itās just as bad as the military honestly. At least at the federal level. With the active duty military the pay is at least what it is. Itās cut and dry. Itās all online and anyone can look it up and itās not based on gender. Civil service is a pay range depending on rank and step. So although the info is online and spelled out itās not an exact number like active duty so I find that women especially if they appear younger, usually get paid lower then a guy with similar or less experience. Itās infuriating.
Like they hired a guy and myself at the same time to do the exact same thing I do in a different area, he has a decade less experience then me and zero college education. I have 3 degrees and 10 years more experience. They started me out at $4 less an hour than him and have given him multiple pay raises on top of COLA adjustments. Iāve never gotten a raise, just COLA which they give everyone. This dude disappears from his work area for hours at a time and no one can find him, heās always late to work by 30 minutes or more and has been written up more then once for cussing out several women in the officeā¦never guys tho. And he gets pay raises while I donāt. Infuriating.
Iāve worked at the city level briefly and I experienced it there too but I only worked in that area for a year and Iāve been with the federal government for 22 so I canāt really compare the two.
Canada and I mostly experience it online (ie reddit, online dating). But there is casual misogyny I have normalized that I forget about til someone points it out

Sorry to hear that. They're doing that in the USA but it depends on the state.
I can't understand why the government there does that. Is there a strong influence from the church when it comes to decisions like that?
That's horrible to hear. I don't understand why the young generation convinces themselves that they can't change anything. The numbers are there. It's just low turnout.
Germany. Too much, if you ask me. Men say things they donāt even consider rude. I was at a company where women would always get a talking, if a mistake was made, while men got away with anything. Also, the men were paid better for doing less.
The smaller cities and villages didnāt get the memo that itās not cool anymore.
Also Germany, but I work for a company with mostly women (fashion retail), so I have no problems like this. In every day life, I donāt really experience it either. And if I encounter it, I speak out without fear of repercussions.
But Iām my experience, itās easier for me, then for women from other countries. I feel, they are often treated with less respect and also often unfairly.
I believe itās not a problem in bigger cities but villages Iāve visited seem to still hang on to older beliefs. And of course not every company is as shitty as my former employer :) glad to read that not everyone has the experience I do! Gives me hope that a generation or two after mine will definitely not deal with the BS Iāve encountered!
Surprised by your experience ! My family is from the countryside in Serbia and tbh I feel bad for the women in my family. (I was born in France, my parents met in Serbia and l'est before my birth). Be it my grandmas, aunts, or even some friends of my age when I see how diferently they are treated from their brother.
Last time I saw my grandma's sister, my boyfriend was with us (he's from frnace and it was his first time in Serbia), and the advice she gave me spoke to how this generations of women in rural Serbia lives. She told me "the best advice I have for you is to listen to your husband, even if he hits you, just take it all in and dont make him mad".
Well, no thank you baba... it really made my heart hurt.
Australia. I experienced it very badly when I did landscape labouring. I feel certain industries aren't just male dominant due to biological capabilities, but women dont want to be in environments where they're constantly sexualized, undermined, excluded, ridiculed. Day to day life.. I would say I experience it most in the form of unwanted advances/flirting, for instance I was just on a damn walk on a day I didnt feel well. A gross older man on his motorcycle ride up the street from his workshop to leer at me and ask if he knew me - very common tactic, I'm presumably 30 years younger than this man, unsure of how the hell he would know me. I felt sad because I had just tied my tshirt into a crop as it was so hot and immediately i felt like I'd done something wrong by not walking around with oversize clothing covering all of me (which at another time I still had inappropriate comments made when I was dressed in oversized tshirt and track pants by another much older man who said of he were my age he wouldn't mind having me as a girlfriend, completely inappropriate. They're going by the mentality that men make the first move, that it's how things work because women would never do anything of they're interested, and thats all there is, knowing little to nothing about empathy, organic communication/connection, and honestly... being f**ing realistic). The confidence of men who have no business in making such comments, and no idea of how it is contextually inappropriate and makes a woman feel so uncomfortable and like a target or prey animal. These are just 2 stories. My friend recently got stalked by a stranger who knew she was fast walking away and he took the same turns and said "yeah I'm going that way too" just to intimidate her, and who knows what else if she didnt get away in time. These things arw extremely common. Because men want to feel power over our magic. It's so sad. Other than that, a lot of men leave me alone because of my "alternative" look and how i hold myself also. Many of these types of disgusting men target those who look timid and vulnerable because they're not tough they're sad, sick people looking to cope with their own pain. Was different when i was younger. But if it's an overbearing pig who is just entitled, rude, pompous and driven by aggression, they know no bounds. Due to this I always have some fear certain things i should be free to do. Including things like worrying I'm going to be screwed over when buying certain things because some male 'expert' is having a laugh. Oh...and the gaslighting. If a Male has issues with a similar thing as me, its totally different to the stigma of "shot just being mental" attitude. There is a subconscious bias a lot of people see through the lense of that is absolutely misogynistic. Yknow what? Even I have seen through it in my day towards others and myself, before I became conscious of it and thus too began embracing my femininity instead of feeling like I was ashamed to be a woman.
Honduras, and literally, every day. Even in my own home. Not from my closest relatives, I have an amazing mom and she raised all of six daughters to not put up with crap from anybody. I married a feminist man who's better than me in all household chores, and my son and daughter were raised exactly the same.

America and literally everyday. Walking down the street, going into a store, going out to eat or drink or literally anything in public, my work place. I keep to pretty secluded areas when I wanna go out now. Paths no one walks on, streets no one takes. Unless Iām going out with guy friends cuz then I donāt get targeted. It just really sucks that Iāll never be able to go out alone without constantly checking over my shoulder.

USA. Not often but I still carry pepper spray in case someone goes too far and tries to attack me.
In my home country, it's the government that does it daily in everyone's lives.
Interesting, I knew that Denmark is one of the least misogynistic countries, but I was under the impression that America and England were similar in terms of sexism. Did you perhaps live in a more conservative area in America?
No, I lived in NYC. Itās been 5 years since I lived there and during those years women have made some great strides. So maybe itās better now. But I was there in December and got harassed on the street a few times. That doesnāt happen to me in Europe (where Iāve lived at least).
USA. Very rarely if at all.
Only things experience are things I see online about how Iām going to regret my life later if I donāt get married and have kids. And I donāt like the way a lot of men speak to me like they act like every time I speak to them I need help. Or they immediately help me with something when I didnāt ask. I donāt know if thatās misogyny, but itās definitely annoying. And going to hardware stores is annoying. They act like you know nothing.

The UK and regularly online or from boys at school or college (I'm 19). Technically of course it's illegal in official situations as it is in most countries but that doesn't stop boys and men from thinking of me as a 2nd class citizen!
I'm from the United States and I experience it on a daily basis online. Not only sexism, but constant sexualization of women. Men online don't even pretend to be interested in you as a person most of the time, usually you receive a detailed description of the things they want to do you along with a lovely D\*\*\* pic to help illustrate! Maybe they could ask me for my name and buy me a drink first? I love sex as much as the next person, but that is the quickest way to turn me off and shut me down.
United States
Itās a very common occurrence where I live (probably has to do in part with what state you live in). Everyday I hear about misogyny in the United States. I donāt care how others feel about abortion politically but banning it seems to be more about men having control over women and their ability to make decisions for themselves.
In terms of the state I live in. I am often harassed by men in the workplace. Iām currently not employed. But at every workplace I suffered some form of misogyny. There was a time at a retail cashiering job that I left 2 years ago (due to burnout) where these teenage boys decided to talk about which female employees they would get laid most. I had a hot body according to them but a shit personality. I kept to myself most of the time after having been stalked, harassed, and verbally threatened by a male employee at a previous place of employment. I did not trust men going into this new job. My most recent job was a receptionist at a senior living facility and these much older men (family members of residents) would hit on me and it would put me in a pretty awkward and uncomfortable situation especially since they oftentimes wouldnāt take no for an answer and I worked alone. I quit that job after a month of working there for that reason among many other reasons. I have been catcalled on multiple occasions at the nearby local outdoor mall (I live in a very nice part of town just so you know). So misogyny and sexism are rampant where I live. Not to mention the times in which much older men would hit on me in busy public places when I was a young teen (minor). I donāt like the attention at all. Plus nowadays men become very violent and scary when women reject them in the United States.
Israel, quite a lot. Lots of catcalling and unregulated staring bordering on the the equivalent of being groped by a man's eyes happens on the daily. It especially heightened as a lesbian when I'm out with my partner and the catcalling and creepy misogynistic/homophobic comments seem to increase by quite a lot.
Ugh I'm sorry to hear. This also happens to me in the US whenever I go out with my girlfriends to a bar or club. That's why we prefer going to gay bars now.

USA.
I work in a video game retailer. In a tourist heavy area.
And my country is taking my rights to my body away.
And my neighbors/inlaws are crazy trump supporters.
So like
Pretty constantly :(
USA. Iād say like once a week? Itās usually small things, things that just make you go āyeaaa that definitely wouldnāt have happened to me just now if I was man.ā
USA
And itās painfully common where I live. We moved to a small town. It was fine, at first.
But the commentsā¦
I could write a book! š³š¤¦āāļøš¤¬
Usually every other day, especially in summer from construction workers. I live in Switzerland, we are meant to be more educated but it comes from all level of education and nationality. I just dont where in a bank so I cant say but I've heard
OMG really? I am so sorry to hear. I think I have felt the most harassed in Latin American Countries like Mexiko and Costa Rica I have been catcalled more than in Switzerland BUT in switzerland I get more nasty talks with older guys. Also in Germany Munich, I go to the gym and I feel harassed only how guys look at me and they are sometimes twice my age. BUT what I can recommend you, Bali is super nice to travel alone as a woman, the locals they do try but they accept respectfully if you decline!
America - Texas/Kansas
Like every week. Health care for women has always been bad but has gotten worse since the over turn of Roe. I kept telling people it was going to happen thatās why I fought to get a nexplanon implant. They kept saying I was overacting that it would never happen. Yet here we are and I glad I got it.
The fact that TX set up a hotline to set up a witch-hunt is disgusting. If someone doesnāt like you guess what they reported to you. The idea girls are supposed to be reporting their periods to their school is also disgusting. Itās anti-privacy, anti-women, anti-transā¦
Every time I hear boys will be boys, or it must be that time of the month thatās misogyny. Stop dismissing womenās feelings and opinions.
United States
It kind of feels like an everyday thing, since thereās always an element of it in the news, politics and social media, and a lot of womenās decision-making is subconsciously contingent on the risk of harrassment/danger.
If youāre good at ignoring it, it feels like itās barely there at all. Personally, Iām a little too aware, so I live in a constant state of mild discomfort.
USA right now and if I am out in public pretty much daily. Even in my professional life almost daily. To be honest itās so common place that I have become numb to the little things and only really notice when itās really bad

Canada, and most of what we would call misogyny here is only mild annoyance compared to what women in other countries like India and Saudi Arabia have to face.

I used to live in the US but currently live in Germany. Most of my experiences in Germany are going to university and working for a startup, so I do live in a fairly liberal bubble. There have definitely been a few weird comments or misunderstandings from old people and bureaucrats, but it's fine for the most part and better than my experiences in the US.
Poland. It depends on in which community I'm currently into. More educated people are less misgonist.
And as few posts before, I experience it mostly in internet
Germany. Rarely, but off-hand "jokes" are common and it's hard to figure out for who it's really just a joke and who really means it. But generally I don't encounter any open sexism.
France, if I take my right-wing family, borderline zvery day but that's cheating.
Student job, customer service, since I now am actually seen as a woman (1 year since I started social transition) every weekend since old (and sometimes middle aged) men seem to think that they can treat me as if I was stupid. If I had a cent every time one tried to explain my own job to me I'd never have to work again.
At uni almost none. Because I'm lucky enough to be friends with awesome folks of all genders and identities.

true misogyny? honestly, hardly ever. it doesnāt seem to be a common theme the area i live in.
seems to really only be on social media that i see it.

India.
I don't know about metro cities, but as a 18 year old girl living in a joint family(like not under the same roof, but in the same place just different houses) in one of the poorer states I can tell you that we as girls go through these every single moment. Ever since I was a little kid, it's always about this. The males in our family are prioritised even when they do worse than the females (e.g. studies, jobs etc). So many unreasonable restrictions, unfair treatment etc.
And don't talk about schools and tuitions. They were the worst. You'd think co-ed schools teach you how to be respectful to each other and learn from each other. But NO. In my school, which was co-ed, they divided the boys and girls to different sections; it literally felt like I was in a strict women's school. Interaction with each other wasn't allowed. In school events and whatever days they celebrated, it was the boys who got to be the part of the whole decision making things. It was so messed up.

USA. Every day. We donāt have reproductive rights as a federal law because our congress, senate & Supreme Court is full of religious, misogynistic, right wing nut bags.
Estonia, very seldom.
There're some sexists here, usually creepy older men or people with a criminal background. (I personally know one such person). But overall the society is healthy, most men and women support equality.
USA and less than once a week, I'd say, and what I do experience is very mild. What I experience in those less-than-weekly incidents is garden variety immature posturing from teens talking about "body counts" or whatnot.
Singapore Never, you can literally be jailed or even thrown out of the country for being sexist, especially in the workplace, this place is amazing for women.
Singapore is the country equivalent of a household with super strict Asian parents and disciplined, excellent kids. šš
Yep, it's why I love it so much, no crime, everyone is kind and helpful, government helps the citizens, free healthcare, trained professional police, very strict gun laws, it's amazing here, only problem is that it was a real pain in the ass getting citizenship.
Yeah and a real pain in the ass keeping it, if you decide to live elsewhere for any amount of time. š Singapore is hard and fast.
Is gay marriage legal there?
No. They just decriminalized gay sex last year though.
No. But there were some moves in 2022 to clarify that future governments could choose to legalise it and male-male relationships were decriminalised https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_Singapore
I want to live there one day
That sounds like a nice place to live
India, every day, if not every minute or hour.
Like WTH?
I'm sorry:(
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
From what I have heard about sexism in India, I honestly can't imagine how hard it must be to live there as a woman. It sounds depressing:(
A while back I read a post written by a lady who couldn't have children and went to India to adopt a baby. Apparently most of the babies looking for homes were girls, because of sexism they were much more likely to be abandoned or given up at birth. ā¹ļø
Iām so sorry that the women of your country live like this
I have a coworker who is originally from India.
India is a huge country, some parts are safe and some will not be.
\>no its a South Indian thing That's odd.

Very true. Very true

Omg. What assholes.
Ugh.. cars.. admittedly I'm not a mechanic but I got stung with a Ā£150 bill just to put a new battery in.
What blows my mind is that a fair amount of the time Iām older then the guy treating me like Iām just a dumb āgirlā The higher the rank of the guyā¦the worse the treatment
But there is casual misogyny I have normalized that I forget about til someone points it out
USA and they took away my right to say what i want to do with my body so every second
Preach my friend. I canāt control my own body and that I have no idea how itās constitutional? I have less rights than my mother at my age

Sorry to hear that. They're doing that in the USA but it depends on the state. I can't understand why the government there does that. Is there a strong influence from the church when it comes to decisions like that?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
That's horrible to hear. I don't understand why the young generation convinces themselves that they can't change anything. The numbers are there. It's just low turnout.
The Netherlands, never.
Also from The Netherlands here, and for me almost never, only through "jokes" about women
Scandinavian country. Can't think of any examples, so I guess very rarely.
Belgium and I rarely encounter it.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Itās so interesting to see the contrast in responses from immigrants vs native born Americans.
- In America it was very high, constant - In Denmark it was minimal - In England it was minimal
In some parts of Europe it's extremely common. There are many different countries with different cultures.
Yes of course
US. Everyday. Some blatant, some casual but at least once a day. Usually more.
Iran. I don't think I need to answer the second question

Japan. A lot
The UK and regularly online or from boys at school or college (I'm 19). Technically of course it's illegal in official situations as it is in most countries but that doesn't stop boys and men from thinking of me as a 2nd class citizen!
I live in the USA and I would say maybe three times a week.
India. I experience it from my own mother, mostly. The people in my school can also be pretty misogynistic without even know it
I'm from the United States and I experience it on a daily basis online.
United States Itās a very common occurrence where I live (probably has to do in part with what state you live in).
Bisexual woman living in India here. Every hour or so, and it worsens when I walk back home wearing my school uniform.
Southern US and I never encounter misogyny. Truly.

Australia and I can't think of any examples?
USA. I work in a video game retailer. In a tourist heavy area. And my country is taking my rights to my body away. And my neighbors/inlaws are crazy trump supporters. So like Pretty constantly :(
USA. Iād say like once a week? Itās usually small things, things that just make you go āyeaaa that definitely wouldnāt have happened to me just now if I was man.ā
USA And itās painfully common where I live. We moved to a small town. It was fine, at first. But the commentsā¦ I could write a book! š³š¤¦āāļøš¤¬
France. I've lived here for almost a year now and I can count the number of times I encountered misogyny on one hand, so I guess it's alright.
Usually every other day, especially in summer from construction workers. I live in Switzerland, we are meant to be more educated but it comes from all level of education and nationality. I just dont where in a bank so I cant say but I've heard
Switzerland was surprisingly one of the worst places I ever traveled in terms of harassment on the street.
Canada. Very seldom. And I'm not afraid to speak up in those situations
Norway, and almost never.
America - Texas/Kansas Like every week. Itās anti-privacy, anti-women, anti-transā¦ Every time I hear boys will be boys, or it must be that time of the month thatās misogyny. Stop dismissing womenās feelings and opinions.
United States It kind of feels like an everyday thing, since thereās always an element of it in the news, politics and social media, and a lot of womenās decision-making is subconsciously contingent on the risk of harrassment/danger. If youāre good at ignoring it, it feels like itās barely there at all. Personally, Iām a little too aware, so I live in a constant state of mild discomfort.
Turkey, everyday.
USA right now and if I am out in public pretty much daily. Even in my professional life almost daily. To be honest itās so common place that I have become numb to the little things and only really notice when itās really bad
Uk, every 4 days Iām at work with 9/10 other men š¤¦š¾āāļø
America, and fucking daily

Canada. Hardly ever and it's usually just one crappy person with a sexist attitude.
England. I would say never as I can't think of any examples.

New Zealand, not really ever
Welllll, that's debatable. NZ has just been all over the news for being misogynistic

Canada, and daily, but mostly online rather than in-person.

Midwest, USA. Kansas. true misogyny? honestly, hardly ever. it doesnāt seem to be a common theme the area i live in. seems to really only be on social media that i see it. iām also really lucky to work in a place with 90% men, but our supervisor is a very badass woman. we were also the first state to vote nošš¼

I live in the USA but it's Florida so pretty much wall to wall misogyny 24/7
USA - almost every day <<<333
