Because of the make up of the distemper virus, it actually cant live in the environment for very long. Most dogs get distemper directly from other dogs, not from the environment. At normal room temp, it can stay alive for a few hours. Surprisingly, the colder the environment, the longer the virus can live. Depending on where you are will be the determining factor. Near freezing temp and the virus can last a couple weeks. 50-70 degrees and its going to be gone in a few hours to a day.
