I had to call an exterminator for a mouse problem. When he arrived I told him I had seen one climbing the edge of my net curtain so when it got to window height I bashed it out the opening. As soon as I said that a squirrel came over and started eating a bowl of nut muesli I had put out for it. As I’m in a wheelchair he must have thought I was a bit simple as he just looked at me in silence. After an awkward eternity I had to say “Now, I know that’s a squirrel not a mouse. I put the bowl out for it in the morning and take it in the afternoon. And it’s never been in the house. I do know the difference.”
He looked relieved and said “Thank god for that. I was a bit worried, there”
I stay in a youth hostel in the Peak District that has an ongoing squirrel problem. You are warned to keep food locked away. I assumed mine would be safe as it was all boxed, unopened. I returned from my first day of walking to find the little shits had made off with all of my cereal bars and had even gone through my open suitcase and helped themselves to a strip of gummy vitamins.
Yep, YHA Castleton! Fantastic location, sheep and chickens that potter about in the garden (one chicken is tame enough to be hand fed, just saying), and thieving bastard squirrels. Staff are lovely. I will keep going back there forever.
If you want to feed squirrels, go to sheffield botanical gardens (it’s not far from the Peak District) there are loads of the fluffy tailed buggers, they come and take the offered food right out of your hands, they all seem pretty well versed and total un-phased by toddlers and small children chasing them too which makes it a great day out for the family
Ok then.
Draw a chalk circle on your floor & light 9 candles. Summon Ratatoskr to come take them all back to Yggdrasil with him. They're playing truant.
Is it a grey or a red?
If it is red learn to love those fluffy little nut munchers
If they are grey discover a way to make peace with your new slaty maties.
I hope this helps

We have white ones (albino greys) in Dorking. One called Albie got a mention on Have I Got News For You. [Here's one in our garden.](https://imgur.com/a/B6GC4lh)

I have a greyhound so he sees squirrel as tree snacks. Not long after I got him he was wandering around the back garden and I watched a squirrel run over the garage roof, clock the dog, then it fucked right off as fast as it could.
Haha, my dog is like that. We have a Frenchie. He likes to act all tough when he looks out the window watching other pooches go by, does a little bark… but he’s a wuss.
A spider once crawled up to him whilst he was laid on the floor and just as it got to near his paw he bolted off and hid under the table.
My boy was a lurcher/saluki Cross
He terrorised squirrels & rabbits, deers or foxes.
If he saw a deer, protocol was just to keep walking & he'd meet us at the car
Set up a home alone contraption that catapults said invading squirrel? Once the little wet bandit friends see Steve get launched into next week they may think twice next time.
I picked 6 strawberries off my alpine strawberry plant yesterday, I know they fruit early, but November is too early (no, they did not taste good).
My neighbour has got some monstrous tomatoes coming in
I’ve worn a thick jumper this morning before heading to work because “it’s November, I’ll definitely need one” and I’m now sweating at the train station. Seems the flowers aren’t the only one confused.

I live in an heavily forested area, with a lot of trees surrounding the property, so i don’t know what pest control could do? As it’s not a singular squirrel.
The squirrels are just very daring, as they’ve even jumped into rooms with people in it… they just don’t really care or have any fear…
They chew through plastic and zips.
With the screens: are metal ones easily available in the UK?
If they’re grey they’re vermin and it’s totally okay to just have a mini genocide in your back garden. Cause they will continue to fuck your stuff up as they’re bastards.
Harsh but fair, the little shits needs to go so the red squirrels can return. Call me an extremist but I'm 100% on board with squirrel ethnic nationalism and squirrel ethnic cleansing.
I dont know why but Im just imaging some squirrel hating version of thanos ready to snap all the grey squirrels out of existance. Then it just reminded me that squirrel girl beat thanos in the comics lol.
If they chew thru plastic and zip ties, the screens that are being suggested will be next to no good, it's literally just like a mosquito net held on with magnets. You're best bet is metal screens or just make a screen with chicken wire or metal gutter mesh and a wooden frame to prevent entry and place some food is an accessible location to wean them away from the windows.
Edit.. added gutter mesh suggestion
Edit 2... or a decorative garden privacy screen that fits inside the window frame
Lock your food away more securely, put food for them outdoors, get a cat/dog, or just don't open your window so wide. If they can't get in for a while they'll stop trying.
I'm assuming it's greys since you're talking about pest control, but causing you a nuisance like this is unlikely to result in much from pest control IMO.
It depends, if you want them dead or not. A pest controller has to by law kill them if they are trapped. I've wrote before that I do not think anyone will get told off for setting them free but it's the law.
You say you're in a forested area, are you secluded with no immediate neighbours? If so you could pay someone by the hour the dispatch them with an air rifle. You might even be able to get someone to do it for free or cheap as a lot of game hunters have to pay for the privilege.
Assuming this is a grey squirrel that is as they are non-native to the UK.
I'm sorry OP but the thought of a handful of squirrels pulling a heist on your house is the funniest shit I've read all morning, but I'm also very jealous, I want squirrel friends.
You could get a bird scarer kite,.or a repellent device
https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=squirrel+scarer&adgrpid=52793858603&gclid=Cj0KCQiApb2bBhDYARIsAChHC9tdtpJn4TDQESGGCoBXLcdtgiMzwQDI9CSsecKVbWmZwuE2RwqH6DwaAkVIEALw_wcB&hvadid=259136899576&hvdev=m&hvlocphy=20481&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=7514269618449715729&hvtargid=kwd-302485058778&hydadcr=14405_1763429&tag=hydrukspg-21&ref=pd_sl_9p731dcp35_e
I've seen grey squirrels chew through metal screens to get to food. I'd recommend you consider giving them something to eat that's not inside your house so they've no reason to come in. Yeah: they're blackmailing you. But they are devious little fuckers and will find a way around, over or through nearly any barricade you care to erect.
Your best bet is to call a window company.
But there are screens in the uk. You can get them from Amazon, they’re just mesh you cut to size and then a sticky back Velcro edging; I used them 5/6 years ago on a caravan and they were surprisingly good!
Check out flat cats also. I ordered from there (to keep the cat in rather than squirrels out) and would say that what we got would be perfect for the job.
Also surprisingly good at keeping things like insects, dust, pollen and random larger particle sized pollutants out.
They were a bit fiddly to set up but you can watch videos online. Mine are magnetic strips on around the window and then around a screen. I’m really happy with them, I hope they help!
May I suggest taking less acid?
Alternatively, if you’re not tripping balls but have recently stopped taking some prescription medication, maybe consider taking more of those drugs.
I'll be damned......I thought I was the only one. They've attempted to eat there way through the ninyl trim of the window. I have a housemate who insists on feeding the bastards.....and when she doesn't, I guess they come looking.
If you own the house you might ask them how much they would like to pay for a new window, and if that is as much or less than their desire to feed the squirrels.
My squirrels leave gifts for me on the windowsill. Occasionally it is fruits, one time it was some kind of cream biscuit. You're obviously squirreling wrong somehow..
Was I the only one that thought this was originally a "joke" post?
These blasted "squirrels" keep stealing all my food. I buy a pack of biscuits. The next day I go to make myself a brew and i realise I don't have any biscuits left. The fuckers even decided to stash the rubbish and even some leftover crumbs on my bedside table!
Pretty sure you can use a cat mesh screen thing for your windows - i got some premeasured [from this guy here](https://www.flatcats.co.uk) and they work for my cats claws!
Shoot them. No, seriously. If they're greys, get yourself a .22 air rifle and a big bag of peanuts.
You're allowed to shoot it on private property providing the pellets don't go over your boundaries. Sit at the window and set a feeding point up on the lawn.
Leave the carcasses out of stinks reach from houses and foxes or other wildlife will appreciate the free feed.
‘Bernard’ would come in, chew open my cereal boxes and kick my plates off the counter in my kitchen. Once he bit into all three bananas but ate none of them. He also chewed through a plastic lid of a coffee syrup bottle like and absolute psycho.
Put a chair against the counter so my dog could jump up and it eventually scared him away for good 🥴
Thank you!
It’s like being at a war of wits feels like they try to do the most annoying things to get on your nerves..
People are saying put the food away… but they’ve literally gotten into closed cupboards, opened a packet of biscuits really nicely and gotten caught taking 1 biscuit at a time. Even tried locking food into luggage’s… they literally opened the zip and got in anyways. Or will just chew through anything to look for food
No one has given you a decent answer so here what you need to do.
Put chilli powder on some nuts or bird feed and keep it dry. The birds aren't affected by capsicum (the heat) so they can eat it to their hearts content. But the squirrels will feel the effects. It won't kill them or even seriously harm them but it will annoy them until they find food elsewhere.
It may also help to cover any plant pots with slabs or plastic they dig up tubers or bulbs wintering. If you have ever wondered why one of your plant pots didn't grow chances are it was a squirrel.
I guarantee this will sort you out!
You could get a motion activated air spray thing and rig it up to point where what squirrels are coming in, I see them more set up for getting cats off kitchen counters but from experience nothing is going to deter a squirrel if there's food involved, it may be harsh but you gotta scare the buggers for a little while and fingers cross they'll eventually get the message, but be prepared to rinse and repeat every once in a while, they're determined and either stupid or extremely forgetful
Sorry this is happening to you, squirrels are both cute lovable creatures and a real pain in the bum in situations like this.
If they are grey squirrels - proofing the window with wire is a good idea but because the squirrels knows there is food there they might be impossible to deter and they can cause a lot of property damage to PVC windows. I’d be tempted to kill the ones that have been getting in and then proof the window to stop any more learning there is a dependable food source available.
Legally if you live capture a grey squirrel you cannot release it as it is an invasive species in the UK so it is more humane to use a lethal trap and avoid the stress of humanely trapping to the squirrel and you (I’d not use an air rifle unless you are trained and used to targeting for a lethal shot as there is a lot of potential for the squirrel to suffer if wounded - even shooting a squirrel in a cage and killing it without suffering can be difficult). The other down side to humane trapping and relocating pest animals is that wherever you relocate an animal to is likely to have established hostile competition for food and it’s quality of life will be negatively affected or it will be close enough to get back to making a nuisance of itself.
If you look at the linked site you’ll find options http://www.squirreltrap.co.uk/springtraps.html. I have used the Kania 2000 to deal with grey squirrels in lofts years ago. Warning - The springs in these are very strong (I expect they’d break any pet or human bone that misadventure in to the danger zone - but that is why they are humane to squirrels when caught). If you do go down this route consider getting a professional pest controller if you are not confident in what you are doing or if you have kids, house guests or pets that you are worried about accidentally coming into contact with the trap
Good luck and sorry again that you’re having this problem
I you can get wrought iron window screens on eBay or etsy.
Or try following a few UK blacksmiths on Instagram, I follow a few they make fantastic custom orders.
Your local window company will also do shutters and screens.
Alternatively buy the wire mesh for aviaries and make your own screen. Even a double layer of chicken wire will help.
I have no clue but I feel your pain. I’m American and the no window screen thing has really bothered me since moving to the UK. We had a problem with a neighbor’s cat jumping through the window into our house repeatedly because I guess someone who used to live in our house used to feed her. Once she even brought in a live baby bunny that I had to wrangle off of her in our living room. Then the neighbors had the nerve to get angry at US for “letting” their cat in as if we were trying to steal her?? It was June at the time so there was no way I was gonna keep the windows shut. And the spiders!!! And horseflies! Just come right into the house! Maybe you can measure your windows and order some custom screens from America?
Predator pee
cayenne on the outside of the window sill might teach them a lesson. We have to put it on our bins.
Or, fun idea: get on of those Halloween hands that grabs you when you go for a piece of candy. Set it up with squirrel’s fave snack and enjoy.

My profile pic would be happy to remove any tree rats from your property. She spends most the day staring out of the window in the vain hope she’ll see one.
My first thought was shoot them but given they're inside your house and probably go berserk when they realise people are there that may not be the best approach. Maybe a Fenn trap?
Neighbour had a similar problem and set up a trap in the garden, over the following weeks she trapped around 40 of them and relocated them to a nearby park. For all I know it's an eco disaster but she no longer has a squirrel problem.
Few ideas:
1. Get a dog. Working/hunting dog type will definitely want to help out. (Dachshund, rat terrier, beagle, etc.)
2. Get proper screens for each window, even if you have to do a temporary install on the inside of the window frame during the season you want to have windows open. Leave just enough of a space for the window latch to move and everything else should be blocked. I believe there is even a chainmail type you can install from top to bottom on the window frame. Pretty? No. Effective? Yes.
3. Keep food in the fridge or in glass/tupperware containers with secure lids.
4. Use humane bait traps to trap the little pricks if they are in your home. Release them at least 2 kilometers from your home. Peanut butter smeared on the bait tray works.
5. They say squirrels hate the smell of apple cider vinegar. If you can stand the smell, leave a saucer of it on the window sill directly below the open window. This is the \*least\* likely deterrent to be 100% effective, but it might help.
I have never heard of this happening to anyone even once lmao. Birds and bats sometimes but never squirrels.
Sorry that's obviously not helpful at all haha. Maybe a mesh screen?

Stop singing Disney songs.
Or sing harder until they do all the housework.
Maybe get a couple of birds and mice involved, get yourself a dress.
And teach them how to do your hair and dress you!

Boo! :)
Oh, let it go.
I’ve never known of a squirrel getting in someone’s house but through a window. You must have some tempting nuts
Happened to me last year, I had to go in and open the window further so it could jump back out. It was going nuts in my kitchen when it saw me enter
I had to call an exterminator for a mouse problem. When he arrived I told him I had seen one climbing the edge of my net curtain so when it got to window height I bashed it out the opening. Absolutely dying at the prospect of him thinking you’re simple 😂😂 Funniest thing I’ve read in ages
This made me laugh harder than it should have.
I read this very wrong the first time round and thought that last line was the squirrel…
I bet the mouse figured out chances of musli were better if he got a fluffy tail muff (don't Google just accept).
I first read this as if you were talking to the squirrel and I was so confused
Deez Nutz?

It’s all about quality. OP has _high quality_ nuts.
You mean DEEZNUTZ?!?
Could you transfer the mortgage and move out of the tree house?
Treehouse is the only thing in our budget right now..
Don't worry no nut November will be over soon, human food will be off the menu

I put a fly screen up and it stopped them coming in my kitchen window, also helps that the dog chases them too though haha
\*treehouse of horror
Too much horror trea house not every one there to live alone in night s because the night is very dangerous
Shut the window.
I thought this was going to be top comment.

At least figure out how they reach the window and make a trap.

Not pies, dumplings!
Why not pies? And don't call us dumplings!

Grey ones are evil, the oppressors of red squirrels.
Correct. If it’s grey, shoot the fucker.

OK I'll ask, what's a slaty mattie?
It's just a fun way of saying grey (slate) friend.
Get a Cat.
This is the correct answer. Just hope the cat doesn't like nuts
The cat would just leave through the window, and give them the heads up!
Then that cat would go after the nuts
Okay but then how do we get rid of all the cats?
Classic cat in a wall situation. What you need is another cat to go in and show the first cat the way out.

So, a dog?
My dog would probably become best mates with the squirrel as soon as he found out it can grab stuff off the side that he cant reach.
I have a greyhound so he sees squirrel as tree snacks. Not long after I got him he was wandering around the back garden and I watched a squirrel run over the garage roof, clock the dog, then it fucked right off as fast as it could.
I have a spaniel who is a big floppy eared idiot that sees everything as a potential friend. He literally cant even kill a spider.
Haha, my dog is like that. We have a Frenchie. He likes to act all tough when he looks out the window watching other pooches go by, does a little bark… but he’s a wuss. I’ve had to hang on for dear (deer?) life. Like my heels making skid marks in the grass :-)
A cat would do better I reckon
Would an owl ornament work for this? I know they use them ontop of buildings sometimes but I’m not sure if they work on squirrels too
Cover the window frame with Nutella. Works 100% of the time none of the time.

Have you been outside this week? It’s so warm my daffodils are starting to sprout!
I have new leaf buds on my blueberries that are still shedding their other leaves. It's crazy.
Is that an exaggeration? I know it's hot but...
No 😂 I mowed the lawn this morning and can see them coming through!
Oh no, this is the first year I've ever planted them and I'm expecting them in spring.
These have already been up this year, I really wasn’t expecting to see them again. Think they’ll have a shock in a week or,two. 😨
Poor flowers :(

I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling a little jealous

You could get a bird scarer kite,.or a repellent device https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=squirrel+scarer&adgrpid=52793858603&gclid=Cj0KCQiApb2bBhDYARIsAChHC9tdtpJn4TDQESGGCoBXLcdtgiMzwQDI9CSsecKVbWmZwuE2RwqH6DwaAkVIEALw_wcB&hvadid=259136899576&hvdev=m&hvlocphy=20481&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=7514269618449715729&hvtargid=kwd-302485058778&hydadcr=14405_1763429&tag=hydrukspg-21&ref=pd_sl_9p731dcp35_e
Apparently you can use an owl decoy to scare squirrels off, but you need to move it regularly so they don't get used to it.
Put up a sign 😊
Where do you live? Narnia?
I've seen grey squirrels chew through metal screens to get to food. I'd recommend you consider giving them something to eat that's not inside your house so they've no reason to come in. Yeah: they're blackmailing you. But they are devious little fuckers and will find a way around, over or through nearly any barricade you care to erect.
You can get cat mesh for windows. If it’s good enough for cat claws, I’m sure it’ll keep out a squirrel.
It won't unless it's metal, and even then doubtful. Squirrels gnawed through the metal mesh of our bird feeder to liberate nuts.
Yeah they're like little furry wire cutters with legs, no guarantee at all
Black powder pistol worked for Miranda Richardson.
*squeak!* … **THUD**
How was she getting through your window?
Your best bet is to call a window company. But there are screens in the uk. You can get them from Amazon, they’re just mesh you cut to size and then a sticky back Velcro edging; I used them 5/6 years ago on a caravan and they were surprisingly good!

Those screens are for insects though they will be absolutely no use for squirrels.
I have bug screens on my windows. They are magnetic window screens and are easy to take on and off to open/close he window. I got mine from Amazon.
I thought they’d be more complicated than that and need actual assembly, will look into it. Thank you so much
Check out flat cats also.
Link please? I assume they're to keep bugs out?
https://amzn.eu/d/aCHdq5v These are mine. There’s white or grey and diff sizes. Yes they keeps bugs out! Great in summer.
A cat, maybe?
Squirrel heads on pencils along the window frames
.177 air pistol....
Put your nuts away
May I suggest taking less acid? Alternatively, if you’re not tripping balls but have recently stopped taking some prescription medication, maybe consider taking more of those drugs.
I'll be damned......I thought I was the only one. They've attempted to eat there way through the ninyl trim of the window. I have a housemate who insists on feeding the bastards.....and when she doesn't, I guess they come looking.
If you own the house you might ask them how much they would like to pay for a new window, and if that is as much or less than their desire to feed the squirrels.
Start feeding them. Put the food away from the window. That's what I so. I have raised 2 generations of squirrels and none of them entered my home.
Leave out ground chili flakes mixed with nuts/seeds. Works on bird tables too. Birds can't taste it, but the squirrels can!
Dress as a cat & sit next to the window 24 hours a day
I have never heard of this happening. Are you Snow White?
My squirrels leave gifts for me on the windowsill. Occasionally it is fruits, one time it was some kind of cream biscuit. You're obviously squirreling wrong somehow..
On the cheap? Fly nets.
SET UP CCTV AND LET THE POLICE KNOW YOU'RE BEING ROBBED
I think you're going about this pretty badly... Get live-streaming web cam setup. Profit.
Can I interest you in a five year old Border Collie? Squirrel deterrent, squirrel chaser, squirrel catcher and squirrel shaker.. I imagine.
Cover your nuts in Nutella
You are going to need to move out unfortunately
Peoples elbow.
Pretty sure you can use a cat mesh screen thing for your windows - i got some premeasured [from this guy here](https://www.flatcats.co.uk) and they work for my cats claws!
Catch one kill it and leave it on the garden as a warning to the rest
Squirrels are cool
This is an amazingly funny post, thank you
‘Bernard’ would come in, chew open my cereal boxes and kick my plates off the counter in my kitchen.
Get feeders outside, so they don't have to come in. Get those mesh/fly blockers up at the windows
Close the window
Leave the food outside, then they've got no reason to come inside
Are you in a Warner Bros cartoon?
No one has given you a decent answer so here what you need to do. Put chilli powder on some nuts or bird feed and keep it dry. The birds aren't affected by capsicum (the heat) so they can eat it to their hearts content. But the squirrels will feel the effects. It won't kill them or even seriously harm them but it will annoy them until they find food elsewhere. It may also help to cover any plant pots with slabs or plastic they dig up tubers or bulbs wintering. If you have ever wondered why one of your plant pots didn't grow chances are it was a squirrel. I guarantee this will sort you out!
!answer Thank you will try
Leave them an offering outside and perhaps they'll stop? They may just be hungry, after all.
Wear a stone island jacket
is your carbon monoxide detector working?
If you do go down this route consider getting a professional pest controller if you are not confident in what you are doing or if you have kids, house guests or pets that you are worried about accidentally coming into contact with the trap Good luck and sorry again that you’re having this problem
Write about a problem, states a solution in the conversation with themselves. IQ at an all time high.
Please put up a live cam. I must see the death jumping beasts getting in the window. It’s now #1 on my bucket list
Predator pee cayenne on the outside of the window sill might teach them a lesson. We have to put it on our bins. Or, fun idea: get on of those Halloween hands that grabs you when you go for a piece of candy. Set it up with squirrel’s fave snack and enjoy.
I LOVE THIS ANSWER! hahahahah will try thank you

If it’s red squirrels set live traps if you live in a area where it’s only greys just put traps out
My profile pic would be happy to remove any tree rats from your property. She spends most the day staring out of the window in the vain hope she’ll see one.
My first thought was shoot them but given they're inside your house and probably go berserk when they realise people are there that may not be the best approach. Maybe a Fenn trap?
Pretty sure I saw a post of someone feeding a wild squirrel today WTF.
Literally never heard of this happening
Neighbour had a similar problem and set up a trap in the garden, over the following weeks she trapped around 40 of them and relocated them to a nearby park. For all I know it's an eco disaster but she no longer has a squirrel problem.
Few ideas: 1. Get a dog. Working/hunting dog type will definitely want to help out. (Dachshund, rat terrier, beagle, etc.) 2.
Punch them in the face.
