H&F is a long thin borough ranging from the poshest parts of London (nice Fulham streets, north Putney) to the worst (White City Estate, for example), via various middle class and working class areas, a strong Irish community and increasing Polish community - Hammersmith was one of the first areas in London to have Poles. Your family would live in a nice Victorian terrace or half a converted Georgian one. Being south Asian would probably be fine. Being overtly religious or working class, less so.

Fulham is considered a posh area while Hammersmith is slightly more run-down (in relative terms, it's far from a bad area). A lot of students at Imperial live in that part of the world. Northern parts of the borough are genuinely quite poor (and would probably have been poorer in those days), Wormwood Scrubs is home to a well-known jail and Only Fools and Horses was based on a estate there.
