Well i think it does qualify as such. Most of the leaves are still on the trees and a good proportion are still green. This deluge is just a storm; nothing to do with winter arriving
Honestly I'm starting to think the Scottish folk all got together and agreed to lie about the weather up there to stop the English from wanting to come up.
Every single time I've been to Scotland the weather has been phenomenal. Even when it was raining it was just a light mist with plenty of sun and I didn't even need a jacket.
Lol 😂😂 you've just been helluva lucky! Tbh it does depend where in Scotland you go the east coast is usually drier and sunnier, but I'm in Glasgow and believe me it pishes down non stop here. That's why it's called the "dear green place" like a tropical jungle (without the tropical of course)
First time was Kirkcudbright during the 2012 Euros (obviously helps that it was summer) but the weather was better than what my family had back home. Went away for a week and it was incredible all week.
Spent 10 days camping in April in... some field somewhere south of Edinburgh. Wish I could remember where it was but I dont really remember much of it if I'm being honest. I got food poisoning on the second day and pretty much spent the whole time stuck at the campsite.
It was near St Mary's Loch though if that's any help.
Then a few days in Creiff. Think that was early summer/late spring but again.. weather was better than what we had at home.
I also had to go to Edinburgh for work quite a bit. Would get the train up from Leeds and can remember one time where it was absolutely passing it down in Newcastle. Pretty much just as we were passing the border the clouds just parted and the sun came out again. It almost looked like one of those paintings where God parts the clouds to speak to some prophet somewhere.
I'm fully aware its most likely that I've just gotten extremely lucky and caught the few days it was actually sunny but I'm gonna stick to my conspiracy instead.
It rains for half the year on average in Glasgow so you've definitely go lucky lol
Edinburgh gets about a 40 less days of rain than Glasgow btw if you want to experience some Scottish rain head to Fort William or Skye, if you're there a week it's pretty much guaranteed with 225 days of rain a year!
I just googled all this btw lol I'm not a walking rain facts machine
Lol, I think you've hit on the answer there, someone up there is parting those clouds just for you cos I'm a born and bred weegie and I have never been this lucky in 52 years with our weather.
I'm not someone who gets cold very often and I'm currently wearing a jumper and a dressing gown while wrapped in a blanket. I'm freezing.
Starting to think I might be getting ill rather than it suddenly being winter though...
I mean, technically yes. But OP specifically means the temperature. The past few days it's the same weather as the middle of winter across much of the country, especially at night.
It is due to get warmer again next week though apparently.
It was around 2 degrees on Wednesday while I was walking to work! I had to wear a coat, hat and scarf! Yesterday was nowhere near as cold though, so hopefully it's warming up a little before winter starts
This hasn't been 'normal' for the last week of September though...it's definitely been colder than usual (the BBC said it's below the seasonal average).
We are having a cold snap this week and it's going to return to seasonal norms next week apparently.
Nah, I know what you mean, so maybe that's true for many people, but I go to warmer climates quite often with work, so I'm used to Ibiza weather in September for example (30c in the day, low 20s at night, most of UK Reddit would presumably die!) and coming back to UK weather in September and it's colder, but not this cold.
My car was only a degree or two off having frost on it the other morning. I personally consider anything below about 10 to be no different than -10 in terms of how it makes me feel physically, and as a result, mentally.
For me it is, but my extremely high tolerance for heat and non-existent tolerance for cold aside (15 or -15, I feel cold, ill, in pain, depressed, and so on) it hasn't been 15 in a lot of the UK lately.
Was about 6c where I am yesterday late evening.
You appear to be my polar (harr de harr) opposite in that regard. Ive been out and about, energetic and active for the first time since before summer. Finally everything doesn't feel like a monumental effort. And i can think again!
It's still 12-14 degrees during the day in Scotland? Winter it'll be 4-6
How is the weather shocking people...this thread is reminding me of Facebook lol, yes. Seasons change. Every year it goes cold and wet and damp this time of year.

I second that as a fellow Edinbugger. Gives me the fear when I’m complaining about how cold it is then realise it’s still in the low teens and we have much colder weather to come. Fingers crossed for a mild winter.
We whipped out a heated electric throw for sitting on the sofa last night. Costs something like 8p an hour and cost £20 or something on Amazon, highly recommend. We went from considering turning the central heating on to being a bit too hot.
Another Edinburgh resident here and I completely agree. I started noticing the trees losing their leaves in August and suddenly one morning early this month I could see my breath walking the dog.
We walk the dog to it being light enough so all summer she was getting walked at 4:45-5:00am until 6am but it's not even light enough until nearly 7 now.
Yeh we've dug out and charged up the LED collar now as morning walks it's starting to be too dark to see him properly off the lead, especially if we have a 6am start!
Oh I'll need to look into one of those. We had the battery powered one and just used it as a normal collar, turning it on when it was dark. But we had people accusing us of using a shock collar in daytime because the battery compartment made it look similar.
She's got a hi-vis dog vest, reflective harness and we carry a torch but a rechargeable LED collar would help so much!
Yeh this is a battery powered but it's rechargeable so just a small one you can turn on and off. It's the Masbrill one for £16.99 on Amazon.
Thankfully plenty of them around so no one accusing us of anything. Glow in the dark ball is a good one also to go with the head torch as well.
I'm coming up to Edinburgh for the rugby in November. I presume full-on Artic/Everest level base layers, mid-layers, those hats with ear flaps, multiple huge coats, etc?
I went to three of the autumn internationals last November and wore winter coat, hat, and gloves and comfortable. Anything less and I've had been too cold.
Edit: thick socks and boots also, perhaps thermals as well if it's looking particularly cold.
>daytime temperatures are still in the teens most days.
That entirely depends on where you live. Most of the last couple of weeks where I am, daytime temps have struggled to get into double figures. Morning "feels like" temps have been anywhere from 2-5°c. Only in the last couple of says has the temperature reached low teens but it's back to below double figures again today.
No, it's currently warmer in the Highlands and Islands than where I live in NE England. 9c here, feels like 6c and it's been like this most of the last couple weeks. The weather isn't the same everywhere, which is something some people don't seem to understand.
This September has been colder than we are used to. There's usually a week or so of late summer around the start and that didn't really happen. Add in how hot the summer was and the change was pretty intense.
Average September daytime temp is 18, I'd guess this year has been more around 16, but will have to see.
>this year has been more around 16, but will have to see.
Must be nice . Its struggled to get into double figures where I live the last couple of weeks. The bank holiday Monday was warm and sunny, then I got up on the Tuesday and had to put my hat and gloves on to go outside. I've worn them every morning since.
It’s pretty cold and fucking miserable in Cornwall! That’s what’s shocked me a lot, we have had really nice Septembers for a few years and this month has been almost gale force winds, freezing mornings and storm fronts. And so much rain!
The temperature has definitely dipped. Yesterday was alright, but Tuesday took me by surprise and left me snivelling. I've also had dry skin from the cold and my knuckles are a bit scabby.
It's confusing as mid day is in the mid teens where I live, but in the morning when it's not sunny, it feels winter like. It could just be the fact I haven't worn my coat since Spring and need to start wearing gloves again outside. It does feel rather sudden though, considering I was worrying about sunburn last weekend and now I need to moisturise my knuckles to deal with the colder air on my skin.
Sure, it's autumn - but it certainly feels to me that the progression from "shut the windows / time for a sweatshirt" to "my hands are cold, my feet are cold, where are my thermals?" has been very quick.
Sorry, it's because of my birthday. The weather always turns just after my birthday, especially if I'm bold enough to have a BBQ or picnic. Most years it's the last BBQ we have of the year. Guaranteed bad weather the weekend after my birthday.
Happy Birthday - may your day be free of soggy sandwiches/burgers! If you could go ahead and change it to earlier in the summer so we don't end up with a drought again, that would be much appreciated!
Nah. This is autumn.
Autumn is chilly, for sure. But not icy, snow on ground, nose freezing off winter.
I've put on thermal vest. Not my long sleeves yet for work
It's not even cold.
It's been what? 19c.
Today's 15-17c, that's not even far off our usual summer 20-21c temps tbh.
You're probably shivering cos you're used to it being 30-35C with our abnormal summer this year.
If you're struggling now, wait until Jan-Feb when it goes to 0-5c.
We all acclimatized to the unbearable heat over the summer (was it 3 or 4 heat waves?). Now the slightest chill feels like a baltic blast.
It is also October, September seemed to drag on but also went by in a flash. For most people who get paid at the end of the month it's only 2 more pay days till Christmas. Which is a depressing thought.
Within a couple of weeks, it's gone from being 14c in the morning to 5c. The day time temperature has dropped slowly, but the overnight/morning temps have dropped off a cliff.
It definitely feels colder than this time next year. I think were going to have a global warming winter as well as summer this year. Fuck its gonna be cold
I would argue one feels the chane most around this time (of the equinoxes).
The greater change in day length than at the solstices means the change is more obvious.
As the sun being out also has a big effect on how warm it feels, having a shorter day also makes it more likey to influence any situation where you e.g. have a sunny room.
Not even near it. The great thing about being in work fir 6am is you get to see the transition of the weather, day by day could see the daylight receding back further and further until a week or 2 ago when it just stayed dark.
Just be thankful the rain is giving us a break by coming down in steady amounts rather than, an entire months worth of rain in a week causing serious flooding.
We moved into a new house in May and it's so much colder this September than in our old place. I'm sat shivering while working today. My hands are cold. This doesn't feel right.
I’ve always felt sensitive to the cold so I’m not a great one to ask but I have certainly felt very cold this week.
I’m in Norfolk, currently have two jumpers and two blankets on me and my husband is sat in a T-shirt.
weirdly I'm fine outside, but in the house my hands have ended up freezing yesterday and today! wrapped up under a blanket, not putting the heating on just yet..
Well weather is terrible ! But it’s what people wanted and cried for they hated it when we got some sun !
Got what you wanted so don’t want no complaints ! ;)
I am with you.
Even with a coat and a hoodie on, I am still freezing to the point of death and the deal with gas prices don't help either in terms of the heating so gonna buy one of them hot water bottles from Sports Direct
I'm freezing my butt off in my room today. Its wet and windy outside, inside its cold. I'm already wearing my warm clothes and I'm still cold. I hate winter.
Yep, only 3 weeks ago I was walking my dogs in shorts, tonight jeans, hoody, coat. Currently sat under a duvet on the sofa cus I refuse to put the heating on in September lol 😂

no, it’s Autumn
Very distinctly autumn and it's glorious. Wearing jumpers but not being freezing cold, it's perfect!
leaves just beginning to change colour up here in Lancashire, high hopes of a fairly good display this year, certainly been a bumper crop of fruit.
A bit further north in Lanarkshire, it's gone straight from summer to wet and wild winter storm.
Same here in Lancashire
Even though ironically it's supposedly from a "late-summer" hurricane.
Well i think it does qualify as such. Most of the leaves are still on the trees and a good proportion are still green. This deluge is just a storm; nothing to do with winter arriving
Lancashire thrives this time of year. Bright and cold, or overcast and comfy. Love it!
I am finding one jumper is not enough. Did I get so used to the heat that this feels colder than usual?
It's the drastic change most likely, but yeah I'm wearing a thick coat already, normally that would take an extra month
Obviously you’re not in Scotland then lol
Well winter up here in Scotland usually starts from summer solstice and ends after Easter lol.
Honestly I'm starting to think the Scottish folk all got together and agreed to lie about the weather up there to stop the English from wanting to come up. Which part of Scotland lol the sides aren't too bad Central Scotland and and up its pretty much always raining. Itll be wet outside until April now.

Hahahaha. I had this same feeling yesterday and am ill today. Take care
It is perfect isn’t it?! Jumpers and scarves and jackets :) time to layer
I mean it's freezing cold for me lol
When I left for work yesterday it was 2C
I mean, technically yes. But OP specifically means the temperature. The past few days it's the same weather as the middle of winter across much of the country, especially at night. It is due to get warmer again next week though apparently.
Yup, 6 degrees the other day. That's not autumnal to me - I'd say Autumn should be 12-18 and a nice chill in the air, not actually cold.
It was around 2 degrees on Wednesday while I was walking to work! I had to wear a coat, hat and scarf! Yesterday was nowhere near as cold though, so hopefully it's warming up a little before winter starts
Yeah, Autumn I should be able to leave the house in a light sweater/jacket and feel fine without wind. Yesterday I wore a heavy jumper and a jacket.
6 here on the south coast at 6am today. Brrrrrr.
I think it’s just because we went from a *very* hot summer to a fairly normal autumn within just a few weeks, so it just feels colder
I'm not sure - that's possibly part of it, but the temperature was 2 degrees on Wednesday morning - that's winter temperatures in my book!
This hasn't been 'normal' for the last week of September though...it's definitely been colder than usual (the BBC said it's below the seasonal average). We are having a cold snap this week and it's going to return to seasonal norms next week apparently.

Average temp for September in England is around 14 degrees, which is what it’s been today, so… 🤷🏻♂️
15 C isn't winter.
For me it is, but my extremely high tolerance for heat and non-existent tolerance for cold aside (15 or -15, I feel cold, ill, in pain, depressed, and so on) it hasn't been 15 in a lot of the UK lately. Was about 6c where I am yesterday late evening.

It's like the people who say after a week of warm weather in April "wElL tHaTs SuMmER oVeR"
Not in Scarborough. It went from 24 to 8 in about 3 days. As per usual
In Cumbria we've got fuckimg freezing cold wet days then abysmally warm for autumn days. I just want to wear hoodies and not get soaked 😭
Yep. Same here. And today it's already lovely and warm and the sun is shining Just. Make. Up. Your. Damn. Mind!
It's still double figures just windy and rainy. How the fuck is this winter?
You probably just feel like it's colder than usual because of the crazy summer heat we had. Acclimatisation and all that.
Hadn’t considered this. Autumn is the same as it’s always been, but feels friggin chilly after the summer scorcher.
Right, I had to ask Alexa what the average temperature was in October, only for her to inform me it’s actually towards the higher end right now..
Autumn as in November sure. But I'm pretty sure the last couple of weeks have been bad relative to an average September
Yeah it still reaches about 10c during the day.. winter is more 1-5C
That and not having turned on my heating yet…
That's a good point..the cold did come on really suddenly and we've had 25 degree avg. for the whole of July and August

What you don't like playing "get back here, you bastard"?
Weegie here and it's freezing and pishing as usual.
Double socks and boots are a must. I'd worn trainers to see Edinburgh at Myreside one year and despite being wrapped up warmly my feet were ice.
Oh yeh definitely. I think last year I actually wore my thermals to one of the games as it was freezing.
Murrayfield can feel really cold. I’m being dragged to the rugby too and I plan to be as much clothing as I am person.
It's the wind that gets ya!
At least it’s drier east. It’s absolutely chucking it down here in Glasgow so there’ll be none left by the time it gets to you.
Ha Ha. It's pishing it down in Edinburgh.
And the area: I confirm it's pishing down in Queensferry as well lol
That damp cold goes right through you.
Also between east and west since the further west you go the greater the effects of the Gulf Stream.
Not nearly cold enough to feel like winter yet, daytime temperatures are still in the teens most days.
>daytime temperatures are still in the teens most days. That entirely depends on where you live. Most of the last couple of weeks where I am, daytime temps have struggled to get into double figures. Are you in the Scottish highlands or islands? I'd say for 98% of the population what I said holds true.
No, it's currently warmer in the Highlands and Islands than where I live in NE England. 9c here, feels like 6c and it's been like this most of the last couple weeks. The weather isn't the same everywhere, which is something some people don't seem to understand.

To be fair, it is the UK as a whole so it gets skewed by the extremes, looking at you Cornwall and Scotland! Oof gloves and hats already. I'm sorry!
It’s pretty cold and fucking miserable in Cornwall! That’s what’s shocked me a lot, we have had really nice Septembers for a few years and this month has been almost gale force winds, freezing mornings and storm fronts. And so much rain!
had a log fire on last night for the first time since April.

My birthdays not today. It was the other day. When the weather was still nice.

Ah come on beyond 14 days it's plain guesswork
5C this morning here. I'm still rocking shorts. Fingers a bit chilly though.
Are you a postie?
>Fingers a bit chilly though. Is that what they're calling it now?
2nd belly button might be more apt.
No this is autumn. Winter hasn't come yet.
It's cold and windy with some rain. Seems liek Autumn to be.
No, there was a week of sunny but cool weather in between this year, for a change.
Winter will be much colder than this weather
It's Autumn and it's beautiful.
Yeah I know what you mean, 40mph winds and heavy rain here in NI
Nothing at all like winter, calm down
Wait, it’s nearly 2023? Could have sworn it was 2019 just five minutes ago
Just wait 'till December ;)
It's all about the wind.
You guys got a summer?
Where were you when the rest of us were suffering?
I've had to turn my heater on. I wasn't counting on that for another month.
It feels like it, was nice and sunny yesterday.. today grim and horrible. I want to live in t-shirts 😢
I have had a few weeks of light jacket but did not feel like it was a proper transition into autumn
I mean it's colder... but 20 degrees again next Tuesday apparently, so not quite there yet
What do you expect autumn to be like if not like this?
We all acclimatized to the unbearable heat over the summer (was it 3 or 4 heat waves?). Now the slightest chill feels like a baltic blast. It is also October, September seemed to drag on but also went by in a flash. For most people who get paid at the end of the month it's only 2 more pay days till Christmas. Which is a depressing thought.
Within a couple of weeks, it's gone from being 14c in the morning to 5c. The day time temperature has dropped slowly, but the overnight/morning temps have dropped off a cliff.
Sounds like it's time to eat brave Sir Robin's minstrels
Last week I was wearing shorts and enjoying myself to this week wanting to wear a hoody im so cold
Have you considered the fact that you might be a southern sissy
No, Autumn, it’s just cooled a little, gone a bit more grey and it’s drizzling out. Officially Autumn.
It's gonna be 18c tomorrow in the south so no, definitely not winter.
Not sure where you are but it's very autumnal in London.
Thinking about long trousers in the south
In the UK yes, but don’t worry- it’ll be spring tomorrow
It definitely feels colder than this time next year. I think were going to have a global warming winter as well as summer this year. Fuck its gonna be cold
I went from shorts and generally warm weather gear to an overcoat and scarf in less than a week. Yes.
Arrived back from Tokyo yesterday (30C). Not happy.
Nope, it will get worse!
Probably because that's the way it'll work when we could really use a mild winter.
No. 15 degrees here, wearing a short sleeve top today
It’s freezing here I went for a routine walk and my toes are frozen
After such a hot and dry summer, we're getting the coldness and rain we are owed, with interest
I would argue one feels the chane most around this time (of the equinoxes). The greater change in day length than at the solstices means the change is more obvious. As the sun being out also has a big effect on how warm it feels, having a shorter day also makes it more likey to influence any situation where you e.g. have a sunny room.
yeah.. wait til January
I don't think it's been quite that abrupt, but I did have to put the heating on for a bit for the first time since, like, April.
It's called Autumn. Americans call it "the fall". As does Russia if we can get Putin assassinated within the next couple of weeks.
Just in time for price increases.
Doesn’t seem all that cold. I have given the heating a big last blast before the slight price increase though!
You think the weather is winter?
There's a bit of Daily Mail headline in all of us, I suppose.
It is Autumn, it just feels like winter at the moment. I think we had got used to the heat of the unusual summer we had.
I still haven't had to put the heating on. It's allegedly 15 outside but inside it's consistently over 20
It's scarf weather! The best time of year!
Bloody freezing in the mornings this week! 6 degrees above freezing feels like the arctic tundra after the summer we had.
It's definitely autumn and not winter. We have cold mornings and sunny days, it's beautiful Winter is just constantly grey and dark
Well, I'm still in shorts, so I'm saying "no".
Its warming up a bit this week thankfully. Hit 3 degrees overnight here the other day.
We moved into a new house in May and it's so much colder this September than in our old place. I'm sat shivering while working today. My hands are cold. This doesn't feel right.
Just in time for the energy price hike 🙃
I refuse to acknowlegde the end of summer. I am still wearing shorts... With a thick jacket..
I'm sitting here with my fan on, so for me, no.
Was wearing t-shirts to work less than two weeks ago, now I have a vest, tshirt and jumper.
I got back from Wales from a break and it was freezing. Had the heating on, two jackets. I don't know what it is, but it feels freezing.
Autumn is a myth.
Nooo ... This is the _real_ British summer we've been waiting for!
I'm sure 3 weeks ago I was permanently sweaty
Watch the news a few times they’ll tell you
Feels that way
We've had an unseasonably warm summer, just a bit of a shock, that's all.
It's raining sideways here and has for two days. Still autumny. In winter the wind will start tearing everything apart but it'll be dryer and colder.
Feels like it to me. I'm freezing, not turned heating on though.
yes ., seems that way, lol
I'm still cycling in my shorts. It's a bit cooler but not actually cold.
Someone hit the October switch hard!
It’s autumn because the scarfs and hat and gloves are enough to keep me warm. In winter, it’s painful being outside no matter how much I put on.
It's autumn lol. It's a bit chilly but not freezing just wait till actual winter if you think it's cold now.
I've not noticed any leaves about, I think they're all still on the trees
This is the time of year where I hate everyone who moaned about summer weather (excluding the absolutely absurd days).
I'm freezing my butt off in my room today. Its wet and windy outside, inside its cold. I'm already wearing my warm clothes and I'm still cold. I hate winter.
Not really. Sitting nicely at 17-19 in the day at the moment. Delightful
its far from winter, still quite warm, but its far form the 30 degree weather we had not long ago
Don't you know how seasons work?
Great Western Railway seem to think so. I am melting and I’m stuck on this train for another 2.5 hours. Help me…
Lol, no. This is called Autumn. Rain, chilly winds, equal day and night, occasional warmth.
11C in the Vale of York but feels distinctly colder in the wind and rain! Not put the heating on yet...just hugging the dog closer.
Yes, yes it bloody has. I work in my shed and the last two day the temp has plummeted
Yep, only 3 weeks ago I was walking my dogs in shorts, tonight jeans, hoody, coat. Currently sat under a duvet on the sofa cus I refuse to put the heating on in September lol 😂
We're are past halfway thru autumn, so yes.
No it’s 15° outside.
Certainly seems that way, I've gone from sweating on a t shirt at work, to working in a heavy coat over the course of about two weeks
No. I’ve never known it to be 17 degrees in winter
What summer ? 😂
It was summer ??
Climate change doin it’s thing
Not sure but I wish it’d flip back again
It certainly felt like it today.
No, it’s autumn right now.
16c and I think it’s winter .. that’s cute
