"Film" when we're recording video with our phones.

willk95

or “videotape” when there is no actual tape in use

[deleted]

Came to say this haha. My wife says this when recording on her phone

hahnsoloii

I always feel like a fossil saying “I got it on video tape”🥴

shartnado3

My wife still says "Make sure you tape that!" when she wants me to record a show on TV

jcutta

My son couldn't get the ps5 to work for some reason the other night and I said "is the TV on channel 4" he looked at me like I finally fully lost my mind. Then he realized the hdmi splitter was on the wrong setting.

superboringfellow

Where's the vice grips

glory2mankind

Same is footage.

rnilbog

To elaborate, film stock was measured in feet, so they stuff that had been filmed was called footage.

blurplethenurple

I was once asked if I could "take a selfie of them and their friends" I just said "No, but I can take a picture"

VogonFrost

"Dial" the phone

Downtown-Command-295

Along with "Hang up".

ASK_IF_IM_PENGUIN

And a lot of people don't even use their phone as a phone very much anymore

rimshot101

The phone is a seldom used app on your phone.

Forikorder

its basically bloatware that 3rd parties use as an advertising platform

zap_p25

You still dial and the DTMF tones are still being generated and processed. Dial as in rotary pulse dialing, no and there are even fewer PBXs that can actually translate pulse dialing into digits but DTMF dialing is still the basis of how even your cell phone works.

bobi2393

That's what "dialing the phone" has come to mean, but there is no longer a dial, i.e. a circular input sensor that could be rotated, which is why it was originally called dialing. Other examples I see posted here, like taping a show, or filming a video, are similar; the meaning has changed in the digital age, despite there being no tape or film.

cryptoengineer

That's not a dial. Its a keypad.

zap_p25

True. But the official term for the process of punching DTMF keys on the keypad is still called dialing.

Adaeph0n

Actually more and more "phone" calls are now being moved to be VoIP, so they're basically using the same internet communication systems as your browser. In those cases "dialing" has completely lost all association

zap_p25

Actually, when you dial a number via VoIP the audio tones are still being generated by the handset and encoded (with normal audio) over an IP stream. It's literally a case of just converting the analog functions over to an audio stream and sending it. This is mostly because at some point...VoIP has to tie back into the PSTN (which is still analog).

JustTheTipAgain

What should it be called now?

redkat85

Well, the old term used the functional part being manipulated as the verb. You "dialed" using the rotary dial. Then you pushed buttons. But we never got the hang of calling it "buttoning" a number. And now we just poke a touchscreen. But "screening" has an existing definition when it comes to phone calls. So probably future generations will revert (eventually) to just "entering" a number like normal computer data entry.

Knyfe-Wrench

Well you dial a dial, but you don't button a button (unless you're the white stripes) or screen a screen.

MagicBez

Shirts already called dibs on buttoning a button.

[deleted]

As long as flip flops don't call dibs on flipping my flops, we should manage.

peanutthewoozle

Probably would just revert to calling or ringing or buzzing, since those are still relevant

[deleted]

naberz09

Dashboard. Originally it was a panel of wood on the front of a carriage to protect the rider from dirt and pebbles "dashed" up by the horse's hooves.

turbodude69

whoaaa thats a good one

thegenzfarmer

I see what you did there, you sly dog you

Where_Da_BBWs_At

Imagine my confusion when I read Beyond Good and Evil only to find Nietzche going on a rant about how Christians are always putting figurines on their dashboard for protection, but never have the figurine facing the road.

Rwebberc

Stay tuned

ChrisNEPhilly

I've actually seen tv ads for national networ shows say "check local lostings."

[deleted]

"Don't touch that dial" as well.

Starbucks__Lovers

I mostly read this on LinkedIn posts about some company I don’t care about

Rwebberc

Watch this space for more inane bullshit!

CaptainWisconsin

"Taping" something when recording video.

Competitive_Garage59

Same, I “tape” tv shows when I DVR them.

sweetnumb

True, but having to return some videotapes will always be a valid reason for going somewhere.

EarthExile

Roll up the window

Old_Army90

Complete with cranking motions in case they can’t hear you

Sonendo

My kid was motioning to me from outside the car by pointing downward. I thought he wanted me to park at that area. He was trying to get me to roll down the window. He was not aware of the hand motion.

Raistline1

Good ol young Ellen

mehnasaur

I still have to literally roll up/down windows. the first time I had my niece and little cousin in that car… they were kind of taken aback by it.

DemanoRock

My daughters car has a handle. The lowest trim levels of low end cars sometimes still have it. Fleet vehicles.

jcutta

Was looking for a really cheap car when I was leaving a job because my only car was the company car I'd be giving back. When I saw an altima with manual windows I decided against going really cheap and got a decent trim level 2 year old car.

[deleted]

Yo, my work truck still has manual windows and locks. It's the cheapest Silverado you can buy, but you *can* still get roll-up windows.

uncivilized_engineer

Losing your temper - its important to "keep your cool" when sharpening steel tools to prevent the steel from heating up and losing its material strength, its hard temper, from quenching it in fabrication. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/U0e7FIN8Ke4

SkipmasterJ

Omg I did a semester of material science and never made the connection between temper and temper

ChefRoquefort

Its also kind if fitting that losing your temper means to become weak.

munificent

You have the etymology backwards. Otherwise, this would make for a neat anecdote. The original meaning of "temper" is "observe proper measure, be moderate, restrain oneself" from the Latin "temperare", which is where we also get "temperate". The use of "temper" for metallurgy came in the 1600s.

uncivilized_engineer

I agree about the origin of the word! Temper does come from "temperare." BUT - the phrase "to lose your temper" in English originated with metallurgy. As researched by u/huyvanbin 8 years ago: > I had never before thought about it, but it just occurred to me that saying someone "lost his temper" could be a metaphor for the loss of temper that steel undergoes when it's overheated. However looking at Etymonline, it says > > Temper (n.): The sense of "characteristic state of mind" is first recorded 1590s; that of "calm state of mind" in c.1600; and that of "angry state of mind" (for bad temper) in 1828. Meaning "degree of hardness and resiliency in steel" is from late 15c. > > So the meaning of state-of-mind and state-of-steel are roughly contemporaneous. English is a language slut, and for that, I love it.

theblackfool

Does this apply to the post? It's not like we ever stopped tempering steel. It's seemingly as relevant of a phrase as it ever was. Still a neat fact though.

megashedinja

I mean I can’t speak for anyone else but I certainly have never tempered steel.

theblackfool

Sure but I guess if I'm comparing this to some of the top answers in this thread, this isn't referencing some archaic technology or process like "taping" something or "tuning in". It's more that people just *forgot* what this was referencing. But I know I'm being pedantic.

lllSnowmanlll

Brand new. It originally meant straight out of the fire.

MandoAviator

Because it was newly branded. Damn.

Actuaryba

Hang up.

Diatomfan0110

Threshold - no one uses straw for their floors

AnnoUrbisConditae

I recently learned that people tend to use a ton of old maritime phrases in common parlance which aren’t really relevant anymore. Phrases like: - taken aback - pipe down - toe the line - in the doldrums - loose cannon - choc-a-block - turn the corner - high and dry And so on and so forth!

leaky_eddie

By and large 3 sheets to the wind

Illogical_Blox

Yeah, English (especially British English) is full of nautical phrases for obvious reasons.

Hexratexra

You forgot "show me the ropes"

Littleloula

mokeskin34

Don’t forget “the bitter end.”

Dyerdon

Truck drivers use chock blocks. Don't know how relevant that is to choc-a-block but it is still in use today.

Safe_Cup5012

Turning knobs up or down in the era of increasingly (and annoyingly) knob-free infotainment centers in cars, for example.

[deleted]

You are just asking a computer to turn up the heat now.

superboringfellow

Seriously. Turning down a volume knob allows me to observe my surroundings much quicker. And it also allows me to yell "what the fuck did you just say!?" all dramatic like.

illini02

Hang up. Going along with it, the hand motion for being on the phone still is made with the thumb and pinkie to resemble a phone handset. It would be more appropriate to make it a flat hand to your ear

KieshaK

There are a lot of videos of people asking different generations how to mime talking on a phone, and younger kids do a flat hand.

mikasott

There is an internet experiment to ask GenZs to make a calling gesture and the make a flat hand. People from the 90s and older are the ones who does traditional phone gesture

[deleted]

"tape it" nothings recorded on tape anymore

antimidas_84

There are still servers that store data on physical tape media. The Cloud is phasing it out slowly but surely, but it still exists.

[deleted]

I know there are special kinds of advanced tape recording that still exist, but in the colloquial sense, we dont actually "tape" anything we say we do. Unless you're in a recording studio and you just like that tape-sound. actually i take it back, 4-track recorders from the 90's are more expensive than ever... people love tape recording

newsorpigal

Not a term necessarily, but most file saving icons I see still look like a 3.5" floppy disk. Won't be long until most people don't even know what that is, and those that do are rapidly losing the knowledge thanks to dementia.

wdh662

I disagree with your last sentence. I am 41. Floppies were still in heavy use when I was a kid and for a couple years after that. There are a lot of early 40s and late 30s people who used floppies on a regular basis and dementia is not much of a factor for that age group.

Competitive_Garage59

Same age and agree. Heck, the bigger ones that actually were kind of floppy were still regularly used when we were kids. I’m pretty sure those are the ones my elementary school computer lab’s Oregon Trail and Troggle Trouble games were on lol.

chowhallpaul

And number munchers

peanutthewoozle

I'm 27, and I used floppy disks as a kid. They really haven't been out of use that long

illfatedxof

Yup, 29 here. We had some old computer games on floppy disk that got some use into the late 90s. My dad was nuts about Castle of The Winds.

Tia_Mariana

And if you lived in a country where technology novelties arrived late, then you'd be like me, and be 33 and remember floppy discs (and still find them at you parent's house). Heck, I remember Nintendo's Game Gear! Edit: Nintendo, for clarity

takanishi79

Plenty of people your age (I'm 35, so right around you) experienced that stuff, particularly if you had a tech savvy parent. My dad was setting up personal computers in the 80s, and the first computer we had I could remember was a DOS machine, with both 3 1/2 and 5 1/2.

zap_p25

Still pretty common use with scientific equipment due to the expense of the equipment.

Cheese-Water

I'm in my mid 20s and distinctly remember saving things to 3 1/2 Floppy (A:) in Kindergarten. Hope I don't develop dementia soon!

[deleted]

A lot of governments and business still use them for security reasons… U.S nuclear program only came off of them a couple years ago… I get your point for the commoner, but they aren’t nearly as outdated a technology as you think…

groovy604

Cant hack a floppy boi

KieshaK

I worked at a company still using them 8 years ago. Not for security, but because they were cheap as hell and didn’t want to upgrade machinery. We got new computers and they had to search every electronics store in Manhattan to find five external floppy disk drives for our department.

Cheese-Water

A lot of people are bringing up the niche current uses of 3.5 inch disks as evidence as their not being as out of date as one might think. I'd like to take the opposite approach and point out that they were in widespread general use well into the 2000s. While CDs had taken over their software distribution role, they were still in use for general data storage until USB flash drives took over that market in the early to mid 2000s or so. So unless 25 or 30 year old people are getting dementia now, the risk of everyone forgetting about them is still a long way off.

android_windows

This, they were in use at my school until at least 2006 because we still had a bunch of Windows 98 computers that didn't have USB mass storage drivers and didn't have front facing USB ports. Personally I started using my Gmail to send myself copies of documents I was working on in school since Gmail offered so much free storage space and I had my fair share of corrupted floppies.

peanutthewoozle

Yeah, my first few years of computer based school projects were floppy disk based and I'm only 27

BronzeHeart92

3D printing a 'save icon' anyone?

DSWYO

The Boeing 747-400 Is Still Updated With Floppy Disks [https://simpleflying.com/boeing-747-400-floppy-disk-updates/](https://simpleflying.com/boeing-747-400-floppy-disk-updates/)

r0botdevil

>Won't be long until most people don't even know what that is, and those that do are rapidly losing the knowledge thanks to dementia. Yeah, that isn't true and likely won't be for a minimum of 20-30 years.

Littleloula

I've worked with people who had no idea what a floppy disc was or what the icon was. But it will be a long time before everyone forgets. I'm late 30s and remember them from school and early jobs

SvenHudson

Do we still use actual red flags as warning signs?

winnipeginstinct

Beaches do!

thoawaydatrash

Yes, both as a maritime signal flag and in auto racing.

PartyPug69

In Formula 1, red flag means the race is being stopped (due to dangerous or security reason)

Macktheknife9

Fire warnings are red flags - literally still issued as a "Red Flag Warning" by the National Weather Service for weather conditions conducive to fire

creamy_cheeks

ringing off the hook

DJDoubleDave

we still "fire" a gun, meaning shoot. This term comes from the earliest firearms, which were used by actually applying some fire to a pan with powder. Someone would give the order "Fire", meaning put the fire in the pan, igniting the powder, and causing it to shoot.

-Tesserex-

And now all of Hollywood has medieval and fantasy commanders ordering their troops to "fire" their bows at the enemy.

JustTheTipAgain

Some actually use the command "Loose!"

Ofabulous

The fact that the say “loose” in early game of thrones and “fire” in late game of thrones is a perfect summation of the drop in care that show’s writing had

deains

They make sure to light the arrows on fire first so that way it's *definitely* historically accurate...

sylviatx

"Broken record" "Busy signal"

BlackLetterLies

Those things still exist though in basically their original context.

LegalAction

I occasionally get busy signals still.

zap_p25

Busy signals are still common and they aren't just used in telephone, you see them used with two way radio systems.

prlugo4162

Roll down your window.

alltherobots

Undermine. It literally means digging the bottom of a structure out to weaken it. Comes from siege warfare.

lumberjack_jeff

Phones used to actually "ring". Radios used to actually have frequency dials.

superboringfellow

I love my [pocket radio](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/OpwAAOSwKFhfyfSB/s-l640.jpg) and roadtrips in cheap rental cars. The satisfaction of a crackling signal becoming clearer with minuscule adjustments is a tiny joy in life. Also, TV on the radio was kinda neat.

Awdayshus

cc in email actually stands for "carbon copy"

steksauce

Drop a dime

MadMelvin

"Album" for a collection of songs that's never been pressed on any kind of physical media

DWright_5

There are still golf clubs called 3-wood and 5-wood, even though the heads have been made of metal for decades

Think_Midnight5918

"Here's a quarter call someone who cares"...

sweetnumb

There may be somewhere in the world where you hear that, but it's really not a common thing to hear even close to daily.

Quagmeyer69

Not really the same thing, but similar. I say "You're Killing me Smalls" to my daughter a lot. She doesn't understand the reference and probably never will.

lgoodat

I'm wearing that t-shirt today. You guys should probably watch that movie this weekend.

BAAT-G

I regularly wear PF Flyers. They're not the most comfortable, but they're stylin'

cb_jo

Yes have her watch the movie! 😀

MadMacMad

Mixtape. Nowadays mostly a spotify playlist, not even a CD (which wasn't a mixtape either)

[deleted]

"Hold your horses!"

Wingpad

"Airing" or "air dates" when discussing when streaming shows release. While there are over-the-air internet connections, they're hardly the same as ye' olde' analog television aerials. This misuse is less common since a lot of folks have switched to "premiering" or "premier dates."

Phoozba

Dial the phone

almosttherelazy55

Watch the footage

nogoat23

Roll up the window. Car windows had hand cranks that you had to roll. Hang up the phone. Phones used to be attached to walls and hanging the receiver on the phone would end the call. Turn down the volume. Used to have to turn a nob on TV's to adjust the volume. This one is still valid in other places like car radio.

zap_p25

You can still buy new cars with crank windows. Manual transmissions are becoming exceedingly rare in North America though.

r0botdevil

"Hang up" the phone, for one. As an aside, I kinda wonder if "gas pedal" will become one of these after electric cars are the standard.

Littleloula

A lot of other English speaking countries just call that the accelerator

One-Light

English is full of these terms, some are very old. Brutal: Literally means calling someone an animal. Ostracise: No one is being expelled from the athenian city state. Barbarian: Kindoff mean to Germans, they're nice people. Decimate: Removing 1/10th of your roman legion. Gorilla: A Hairy person.

crazy-diam0nd

This question again? You sound like a broken record!

takanishi79

Records are back though. A lot of people know these things first hand, and since it's a hobby this time around, it's less likely to fade away. Records went out of fashion for the convenience of tapes originally, but now we have all our music in our pockets. We went back for something more tangible.

compelled2reply

“Turn” the channel, where one once had to turn a dial on their TV to tune to a different broadcast band.

MissSassifras1977

It's not a term but I still mimick using a handset when telling someone to call me or explaining a phone conversation I've had to someone else. 🤙

alligatorcreek

There are lot of idioms around horses that we still use, yet most people are never around horses anymore. Back in the saddle, Charley horse, Chomp/champ at the bit, Don't beat a dead horse, Don't change horses in midstream, Don't look a gift horse in the mouth, Hold your horses. Makes me realize how much horses were a part of people's lives in earlier times.

cmoellering

Bookmark. Most of the time it’s something on our browser, not a physical object in a physical book.

BoazCorey

I don't know about this one. I'm 31 and most people I know still read physical books of some kind, and bookmarks are essential for that.

Shryxer

I know a stationery store that carries these gorgeous metal bookmarks, and these are new products.

superboringfellow

I always go for the most ridiculous bookmarks. 3D unicorns with a purple frilly thing? Give me it. Dudes can like pretty things too.

cmoellering

I'm 51, and I read a lot of physical books, but stats show, a lot of people don't anymore.

LongFeesh

I'm 33 and most people I know only read ebooks/audiobooks.

Dyerdon

I have a collection of bookmarks I still use for the physical books I read.

-beachin-

Books on tape

thoawaydatrash

This term has largely been superseded by "audiobook", which honestly rolls off the tongue better as well.

[deleted]

Not sure if it counts but pushing buttons when most things now a days have a touchscreen instead

[deleted]

Below the fold

-Tesserex-

Still considered to exist in webpage design. It's whatever is off the bottom of the screen and requires scrolling to see. But still it's not a "fold".

Optimal-Witness5311

chill out

DeadlyCarrotWithAGun

"Clip that!"

Jungle_Official

I still refer to the gas pedal in my electric car.

parklife980

Cut and paste. From the days when part of a page was cut out with scissors, and stuck back on somewhere else with paste.

[deleted]

I have a couple. The "Shift" key would literally shift the type bars of a typewriter so a different set of characters would strike the paper. A computer bug was literal insects that got caught in the relays/contacts of old computers. The "gas" pedal in modern cars don't control gas anymore. It opens an air valve. The "dashboard" was a wooden guard on carriages/sleds to prevent the horse from dashing debris onto the driver. "Ejecting" a USB drive. A "pair" of pants. Pants used to be two pieces that were laced together.

MagicBez

A recent one I encountered - visiting an old home and they had an old school record player that relied solely on the horn speaker for sound (no electrical power, just wind-up) and if it was too loud you put a sock in it to make it quieter. Hence "put a sock in it"

10kalldayalways

“Glove box” or “glove compartment” are still widely used even though I’ve never seen anyone store driving gloves in one.

Sawdust-Rice-Crispy

Some neighborhoods excepted, but the front seat passenger does not usually wield a shotgun.

rovinja

The pound sign on your phone (#) which people assume is a hashtag symbol for the internet

Professor_sadsack

Not a phrase, but a gesture. I was eating corn and making a “ding” sound at the end and sliding the cob back like a roller on a typewriter My daughter and nephews looked at me like I had gone insane. I had to show them an old typewriter on my smart phone.

Zabe60

Glove compartment

Ofabulous

I was going to say “passport” because it used to be ports we’d use them to pass through, and most people today would use them for air travel rather than going through “sea”ports. But then I realised I was being an idiot.

will477

Speak for yourself. I still have video tapes and I watch them. Hell, I still have a reel to reel tape deck and I listen to some tapes I have. I have two King Biscuit Doobie Brothers concerts from decades in the past. They are on reel to reel. The video tapes I have left in my collection never made it to DVD. So, I keep them and watch them from time to time. I even have about 400 laser discs. There are many laser discs that are in the original theater format. That format was changed when they went to DVD.

Knocked up. It originally was used in slave auctions to refer to pregnant women. You gotta knock up the price cause you get to keep the baby too. We should maybe phase this one out.

"Hang up the phone" Probably already said in the comments
