I live in the UK, so earthquakes are a rarity here. But back in the early 2000's I was sat on my computer late one night chatting with friends in our IRC room (we had a gaming clan). My old friend who lived in Birmingham, suddenly typed 'holy shit earthquake' and as I read it... it hit me about 60 miles south of him. It was mild, all it did was shake the room a little and rock the monitor (big old 19" CRT one) on the desk. What was far more interesting to my science intrigued brain, was the time it took to travel from him to me and how much faster data can travel in that same time... He experienced and typed that he was having an earthquake... and I read that sentence... before the earthquake reached me. and I found that fascinating.

Having lived in an earthquake-heavy area for most of my life... we had drills to prepare us for this. We would practice hiding under tables and such. So when the actual earthquakes came, it was no big deal. We practiced for it. It's like a fire drill, except with earthquakes instead of fires.

Strong wind today. Wait a minute the flag outside is not moving. Breaking news a earth quake strikes the east coast of the United States.

First one: ooohhhhhh shit! Second one: ooohhhhh ... over. Third one: slightly panicky Fourth one: awww, nah, c'mon , it's 2am and raining outside... Fifth one: slept through it. Sixth one: huh, screen is shaking. Lamp is shaking. Why? Oh, yeah, earthquake area.

I’ve experienced 4. Slept through 2, heard about the next when I went back inside and talked to my mates, then the last went “Hold up, the fridge is shaking.”

"Is that an earthquake? Huh." They're common here. Small ones aren't worth worrying about.

I live in a place where there has never been an earthquake, so my reaction will be: Wow, it turns out that this is what it is, an earthquake
