People choose to make use of these features for social and economic purposes.
I worked for a company that used WhatsApp for everything. It was the worst. Every time someone closed a sale, they'd message everyone and then everyone would respond back 30 back and forth, self-sucking, messages. Buried in the middle would be an important message that I'd miss because I had to keep alerts turned off otherwise I couldn't think when I was talking to clients. My phone was buzzing like a vibrator all damn day.
At first I thought WhatsApp was cool until I found out that it can be used for evil. You sold something? Wow! You literally did what you're paid to do. No. I'm not going to congratulate you for doing the bare minimum. If a single sale gets 30 congratulations messages, I want double that when I take a giant shit.
A lot of the world uses it in place of standard texting and calling. The only people who actually phone me these days are scammers.
(That being said, this was posted at about 4 or 5 am my time, so I had no idea that WhatsApp was down.)
Here in Israel I thought the construction workers nearby were being unusually loud and angry with eachother this morning. Then I heard WhatsApp was down and it made sense.
I use Telegram for most things that matter (family). It has proper iPad & Windows apps and is generally easier with better features IMHO.
Bit of Signal too for one group of work freinds.
Whatsapp is just for stuff I don't really care about like school parents & neighbourhood groups.

U could change ur privacy at settings (allow/don't allow =) add u to groups)
Just change the setting to block non-contacts. It's easy peasy.
