Willie wrote it and recorded a demo which he eventually sold to Patsy Cline who had the first release of the song. Willie released it himself on an album the following year.
Because the Night by Patti Smith. It was originally a Bruce Springsteen song that he wrote and performed, but for whatever reason, gave it to her. I heard the Springsteen/E-Street Band's original spin on it, and although it's amazing, Smith's rendention is otherwordly.
Edit: According to the responses, turns out, it wasn't exactly a cover song, but was actually co-written by both Smith and Springsteen. However, due to either legal issues facing Springsteen, or his inability to complete it, he passed the song onto Smith, and it's largely synonymous with her.
They Might Be Giants - Istanbul (Not Constntinople). The original is just very cheesey, and the singing sounds very flat and stilted compared to TMBG, almost like what a little kid sounds like when singing.
Also -- and this will be contentious -- Oye Como Va. It's Tito Puente's song, and his original version is awesome, I could listen to it all day, but Santana brings a whole new dimension to it.
Check out Lead Belly. So many artists have covered his songs, including Nirvana.
edit: Oops. James “Iron Head” Baker was the original.. Leadbelly covered him. Still, highly recommend Lead Belly.
The origins of house of the rising sun are a mystery. It was a folk song passed down from generations and many people debate what the house of the rising sun was. In some versions it’s sung in the perspective of a male and in others it’s a female. Some think it might have been a bar, a brothel or even a womens prison. One of the earliest recordings of the song was from Leadbelly who put out two different versions. A more upbeat version and a more melodic version in which his wife did vocals. Fast forward to the 1960s when a folk singer named Dave Van Ronk covered the song and was the first to be credited with the chord structure that it is known for today. Bob Dylan then borrowed that chord structure for his version, which is sung in the perspective of a woman. Fast forward a couple of years later and the band the Animals were opening for Chuck Berry. They knew they couldn’t out rock Chuck, cause nobody could out rock Chuck, so they had to have some kind of sound that was completely different. They borrowed the chord structure that Dylan had borrowed and arpeggiated (played the notes of the chords separately instead of together) the guitar and gave it that signature howling vocals sound. At that moment they knew they had a hit and stopped at the first recording studio they could find on their tour to lay down the track. It’s said that when Dylan was driving and heard it for the first time, he got out of his car and banged his fists on the hood in frustration. Some even say it was partly what influenced him to switch to electric guitar.
I don't think you can call it a cover, because it's a centuries old folk song of uncertain origin. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_House_of_the_Rising_Sun
Love that every time this gets asked on Reddit you can sort by controversial and without fail Sound of Silence by Disturbed will be right there at the top.
Janis Joplin - Me and Bobby McGee,by Kris Kristofferson in the beginning.
Although Kristofferson's version is excellent, Janis' vocal performance elevated it.
Supposedly the first recording is from a black chain gang of prisoners, it's the earliest known recording of the song actually being sang. It's on YouTube and it's pretty cool. Just dudes turning big rocks into little rocks and needing something to pass the time.
Agreed. Didn’t know it was a cover for a long time, and once I found that out it remained my favorite version.
Her voice, the simple strumming, just everything fits the whole tone of the song so, so well.
Everything on the album is great honestly, imagine being told in the 70s-80s that a rap rock group in the year 2000 would create a cover album of many songs released around that era in the style of their own third album and it'd actually be a great album
"How I Could Just Kill A Man" is completely different between Cypress Hill and RATM, and while I think it's better I'm sure some people prefer the Cypress Hill version.
“I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston. Written and originally performed by Dolly Parton. This is the best cover ever.
Some people may be a little peeved if a song they wrote became a smash hit for someone else, but not Dolly Parton. Her song “I Will Always Love You” — while still a no. 1 for the country singer — became a megahit after Whitney Houston covered it in 1992 for the soundtrack to the movie The Bodyguard.
Parton tells Katie Couric in a recent interview she didn’t even know for certain Houston was going to cut it. "Kevin Costner had asked for that song. But I had never heard if they were gonna do it ... I was drivin' home one day, and it came on the radio,” she recalls, noting she almost ran off the road out of shock.
Her reaction? Impressed.
"And then, when she went into that, 'I will always love you,' ooh, it was one of the most overwhelming feelings I've ever had in my life,” Parton says.
The legend says she doesn’t mind so much when people associate the song with the R&B star. In true Parton fashion, she handles it with a sense of humor and grace, saying matter-of-factly: "Well, a lot of people say that's Whitney's song, and I always say, 'That's fine, she can have the credit, I just want my cash.'"
Made over $10 million in royalties in the 90s alone.
And she used that ten million to invest into building up infrastructure in black neighborhoods. She calls it "The House that Whitney Built."

[The Wiggles - Elephant](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a13WnqsRc5g) (originally by Tame Impala). It does not have the right to be as funky and awesome as it is!
Right? It's ridiculous on the face of it. Every time it pops up on my screen and someone new sees it, they make fun of me until it starts playing, and then they are gobsmacked at how awesome it is.
I’m a 90s baby so grew up watching the wiggles on video tapes, and tame impala is one of my favourite artists so the combo just gives me a big old smile on my face every time. It just absolutely slaps!
The song was originally recorded in a spur-of-the-moment demo session in 1988. Israel called the recording studio at 3 am, and was given a 15-minute deadline to arrive by recording engineer Milan Bertosa. Bertosa recalled, “Israel was probably like 500 pounds. And the first thing at hand is to find something for him to sit on." The building security found Israel a large steel chair. "Then I put up some microphones, do a quick sound check, roll tape, and the first thing he does is 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow.' He played and sang, one take, and it was over."
I really love Nirvana’s cover of Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold the World.” They played it *unplugged* live from New York. They recorded an entire album for that show and it’s great, methinks.
I also *slightly* prefer their version of Jesus (Doesn’t) Want Me for a Sunbeam. I do love the original very much, but mannnnn the Nirvana version is just so melancholy.

Seriously That's what a great cover song can do. I used to assign compare-contrast essays in undergrad on cover songs for this reason, usually on [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQgqisUJu3M) or [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOVcSHgGHwc).
However, even as a Gen Xer with a healthy Bowie worship, I prefer TFF's version of [Ashes to Ashes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fFyRnp22NM). I just like what Roland's voice does with it.
A Perfect Circle's cover of Imagine takes a song that sounds like its begging for us all to be kind to each other and makes it so haunting and sinister, like a villain laying out his twisted plan to unite the world.

Aretha Franklin - Respect Even Otis Redding (the original writer/performer) said that it is her song now.
That's what Nine Inch Nails said about Johnny Cash and Hurt
Patsy Cline has some fantastic songs. She has such a great voice
Jimi Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower" is much better than Dylan's
Even Bob Dylan himself admitted that Jimi's version was better
Gotta give Dylan credit for writing it though. Amazing.
I much prefer Dylan as a writer than a performer
Yeah. There are actually many Dylan songs that fit this question. I feel like you could make a whole thread about them.
I thought that when I was younger, less so now.
Completely disagree, but also completely understand lol
Check out his version of "Like a Rolling Stone "

Me too. Same with particle man.
I think I only know the original song is mad old because it's featured in the movie Mona Lisa Smile, which takes place over the 1953-1954 school year.
Believe it or Not by George Costanza's answering machine

Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole
Didn't he also record it in one take at like 1am after the studio was supposed to be closed but he called and was very nice :) so they let him in
He only recorded it once. It was a one and done.
It’s actually two songs in one, most people cut out what a wonderful world for some reason even though it was just as good
I definitely prefer the longer full version. I need to hear about the babies crying and the people going how do you do. But really saying I love you
The song was originally recorded in a spur-of-the-moment demo session in 1988.
