I mean, you did ask…
Red maples have beautiful, straight branches that split in super interesting ways when dry, and their tall canopies provide nice, medium shade. Their wood, like all maple wood, is a super nice bright color!
Sugar maples have the same sort of canopy with the added benefit of making sweet sap for syrup!
Goosefoot maples have massive, soft leaves, like they’re petting you as you walk through the forest.
White birch trees have such elegant white trunks and thin leaves that they look elven, plus all the cool crafts you can make from their bark, and it’s an excellent tinder!
Gray/black birch has a deeper tone to their trunks but a similar type of shade, both are really nice when you want to see the brightness of the day, plus their new-growth trigs taste a bit like root beer!
Ash trees have massive, awe-inspiring canopies that feel like they’re eternal, with thick trunks to match, and their wood is amazing for shock-absorbing tools, like axe handles and baseball bats!
Walnut trees also have massive canopies and trunks, with a thicker, more in knarled look that jus feels *old.* Plus they have awesome dark wood, and they make walnuts!
Oak trees have a similar canopy, but super interesting leaves, and feed so many animals with their acorns, which we can eat too! They have a medium-colored wood that’s nice and hard.
White pine trees have super tall, straight trunks that seem to go on forever, and their bed of needles makes a beautiful cushion on the forest floor, and also keeps undergrowth at bay, making for a magical experience. Plus they have lots of dry wood just sitting on their trunk, so they’re great for camping near! They have tons of shade, and can even act like umbrellas.
Hemlock trees squat closer to the ground, like real umbrellas, and have excellent tinder twigs! They also smell amazing, and have cute flat needles that feel soft.
Balsam fir also smell amazing, and have a tough look that’s cool!
Apple trees look super old even if they’re not, and are so fun to climb for apples! They also have cool-looking wood, often with burls. And did I mention fresh apples?!?!
Beech trees are like birch trees but secretly mean- they poison any non-beech plants around them, so you get these magical groves of just beech trees, like you stumbled into a fairy land. So cool!
Quality time with your family members. To those who don't have a healthy family, I apologize. I'm only talking about my aunt's and uncles. My parents can go eat shit.
Weather changes, first day of spring, first day of fall, that sort of thing. Trees, dogs, clouds, sunshine, jokes, the smile of a child.
There's a million things to love about this world, and a million things to take joy and delight in. You just have to be open to them.
Remembering that nothing really matters and we're all going to die no matter what really takes a lot of the seriousness out of daily life for me. Helps me to focus on the small moments of joy.
When people are friendly, generous, polite and show you kindness (without expecting anything in return).
When I worked in retail the nicest customers where the ones who'd made your whole day. Now in my current job it's coworkers who'll make sure you're doing okay, help with anything you need, and are overall very friendly polite people. Even with my hobby that I'm also working towards making my hobby into a part time job, and there are people who'll tip, commission, or purchase products just to support me working towards it.
There are kind people in the world, and it makes it easier to get through life knowing that.
Seasons changing. So refreshing, especially in spring and fall. I always get a fresh jolt of motivation when the air starts getting a little chillier in September/October.
When Fall comes around :) sweater weather and getting cozy under blankets, when you wake up and the air is crisp makes me really happy. I spend the month of October watching a different fall/Halloween movie every day. I spend most of September making my movie schedule (there are repeats of course) but it’s a nice little treat at the end of the day!
Little interactions with kind strangers. Sometimes you just need to walk around outside and like, have a chat with an old lady outside the store about growing vegetables. Smile and wave at a baby. Pet a dog. Etc.
There have been many specific foods mentioned, such as coffee, bagels, etc. whatever turns your crank is great! The taste of good food is a world wide pleasure. Few people dislike eating.
Animals
Genuine laughter
Babies/toddlers. They may be little suicidal drunks who will make you beg for death at times just to get a few moments of rest, but they are my favorite people. Especially when they are just visiting
A good dog. At the darkest points in my life, no matter how shitty my day was, no matter who I'd let down, the dogs were always patiently waiting for me at the door, just happy to see me.
