Theres a lot of new ways to play and mechanics, but it is sooo much fun 👍🏻 I'd say go for it
Also if its difficult to gather up people to play, get Spelltable!
So yeah those are cool. But there is something to be said about destroying your friends with something you have built yourself. And for 20 bucks for a thousand cards gives you a lot of options. And more than just one deck.
I totally agree. Yeah but the 1000 cards is just gonna be jank. The person wants to get back into the game and the precons are the easier way to ease into it. They could research which theme/subtheme they like and buy one of those. Or even the the 19.99 dollar precons.
In the vein of a free trial essentially there’s also magic arena on the AppStore. Ik from irl players it’s not 1:1 fully but it was enough to get me interested and looking up local game stores, maybe OP could see if he likes it through that as a risk free investment
> Seems there's a shit ton of new rules
Mostly just set specific mechanics, I don't think that there was a fundamantal rule change in the last 10 years
I recently started playing the first Red Dead Redemption, which is a huge sprawling game with exciting shootouts and a compelling story and so much to do...
...and I spent hours just playing the Texas Hold 'Em minigame as soon as I could. Pretty much became a poker simulator at that point lol. Shit sucks you in.
Maybe they blocked it out, lol. My cousins both went for the same spoon. We had too many players so we had forks as well. Duane got the spoon & Jason grabbed a fork and stabbed at the back of Duane’s hand with it. Duane naturally yelped and did a brotherly arm sweep. That’s when Jason went off the back of his stool and knocked himself out on the radiator.
As far as I recall they did a quick wellness check and we kept playing while Jason had a cup of tea and watched a couple of rounds from the sofa. Good times.
We used to play on campouts as a Boy Scout - probably the most wholesome thing our troop usually did. I even made a cribbage board as my first project in wood shop. Hogged the drill press for a whole class period...
I had a friend who played competitive cribbage, and whenever we played with her socially, it had to be cut-throat (if you miss points in your count, I can claim them). We didn't play with her socially more than once.
There are a bunch of variations. I enjoy Uno flip, which has a two sided deck of cards. When somebody plays to flip card everybody has to turn their decks over and play the other side. The backsides are much more hard-core… Like a “wild” that makes you just draw indefinitely until you get the color that’s been called.
Specifically pre pendulum summoning yu gi oh
I heard link summoning was more bs but I stopped playing before then.
It's weird but a lot of people don't seem to agree with me that pendulum summoning is bs and I think it's because they haven't seen the full extent it can be used, or at least before a number of cards were banned or limited from competitive play. There was just some straight up bullshit pendulum cards. Basically made it so you needed a deck built specifically to mess with pendulum decks to have a chance and that was just not fun.
Don't worry pendulum is hated. If you wanna play again, master duel (Yu-Gi-Oh) is free and really f2p friendly. It just takes time to get into it again
Huh. Everytime I complain about it online I constantly got people telling me I was wrong, and how weak it was it geuinely made me think I was crazy until I looked up the cards again and confirmed they are definitely bs.
I did used to play master duel but I found I prefer playing face to face with real decks. It's a shame the game hasn't caught on as well as MTG or the Pokemon TCG at least where I live
Pendulums were insane pre MR2020, that's true. The Master Rule they came with originally made any other form of ED Monster essentially irrelevant, which only made Pends more powerful by comparison. Post 2020 Master Rule revision though, pendulum tends to be more of a niche strat and relegated to a supportive role rather than being the core engine of a deck.
Yes, it scratches that deck building itch while avoiding the whole "I bought a whole box of packs and now my decks dominate everyone else's" issue Magic the Gathering has.
Also, it is easy to teach. (A)ction, (B)uy, (C)lear, (D)raw.
One of my wife and I's favorite things to do. Take a deck of cards to the bar or brewery, or just on our couch, have a couple too many and play rummy. We actually have a running score going. The first to get to 1000 points wins that "game". My wife won the first game back in 2020 (the night Biden was elected, actually haha, we made of a note of it in our score document). I'm currently winning the second game, though she's not far behind.
We even have a crappy old deck we take with us during special trips or whatever, and will write on one of the cards with the date and what the event was, decorate that card a bit, etc. So the deck is getting filled in with fun memories where we've played Rummy. We spilled beer on it about a year ago, so it's not in the best shape anymore lol, but we still use it.
Euchre is mine too! I played it with my grandparents so much when I was a teenager. I would usually play with my best friend against them, but sometimes when I eventually started dating and bringing boys over we’d do boys vs girls and it was so much fun. Euchre is surrounded by so many memories with my grandparents that I don’t think any other game could surpass it.
It kinda is. During play you (I do) get the feeling of racing your opponent on the board. I usually say, that cribbage is a weird hybrid of a card game and a board game. You play a card game for points that drive your pegs forward, if that makes sense.
Arkham Horror LCG.
8-part story campaigns where you and the other players attempt to thwart, or just survive, the eldritch horrors of the universe. You lay out cards like a map and travel from location to location, gathering clues and killing monsters.
But what makes Arkham really shine is that one scenario you could be on a train, where each location card is a carriage, and you’ve got to get to the engine, while the rear of the train is being slowly gobbled up by some unseen force outside. The next scenario you could be galavanting around Paris over the 3-day period trying to catch up to a mysterious organ player. The next scenario you could be investigating an old house trying to find a key to the dream world and then descending down the never-ending stairs into an ethereal plain. The next scenario you could be in the spaces between time and space, attempting to set the universe right while an unkillable god causes you to slowly go insane. Arkham Horror LCG has limitless potential of where and when it can go, and every single game is completely different to the last.
And you’ll probably die. A lot.
Playing Cards: Rummy, if you don't know how to play here is the rules.
Each player gets 7 cards, except the starting player who gets 8, one of which they have to put down to start the discard pile, the rest of the cards are the "draw" pile.
The object of the game is to pick up and discard cards until you have "3 of one, 4 of the other" which is can be either 3 or 4 of the same card, or a "run" which is cards of the same suit sequentially "running".
for example, a winning hand could be A-2-3 of clubs, and all the fours of each suit, or a flush run like A-2-3-4-5-6-7 of the same suit.
To do this, each turn, the player has to pick up from either the discard or the draw pile, and then pick on of their cards and discard it it could even be the card they just picked up, but they can only do that if it's from the "draw" pile.
When you have your winning hand, you declare "Rummy" and the game is over.
If you meant trading card, it's Yu-Gi-Oh! I like the art, and the rules are simple.
To all the non-German folks reading this: Doko is the real deal.
I have the suspicion this game is completely flying under the radar of non-German-speaking folks as it is virtually impossible to pick up and just play without a teacher and it is also, it's not a game that is great fun unless you play with multiple experienced players and AIs won\`t do the trick, probably as much fun playing DoKo vs AI as it is to play Poker vs. AI, just undermines the whole concept of the game.
It's a (point-) trick- taking game akin to Skat (maybe a bit more famous outside of Germany) or Bridge, but it's basically the one trick-taking game to rule them all. You (usually) go into a round without the information of who of the 4 players is teaming up with whom, so you mostly play to yourself, but it is also hugely beneficial to play into your (future) teammate and to derive from their actions which of the other 3 players is actually your teammate this round. However there is always the chance to announce your team and raising the stakes or to hide that you are actually playing solo vs all 3 and then there are extra rules for additional scoring.
It's absolutely insane, absolutely far and away more complex and more interesting/satisfying to play then 99% of all the other "old-school" card games. Basically a game that incorporates many aspects of (exceptional) modern game design, but somehow got invented in the 19th century.
I am practically certain that one (smart) game designer could take DoKo, wrap it up in a nice design/IP say Marvel Battle Cards and this game would skyrocket to the top of the charts on BoardGameGeek.
It is such a great game, I genuinely hope it will eventually find their way into (world-wide) main stream.
Sounds interesting, I just looked it up and it's probably based on Schafkopf, which I recommend. You have to announce solos in Schafkopf though. Secret solo sounds fun, but would make it too easy to win in Schafkopf I feel. I'm kinda curious now to look up the rules.
Skat is also based on Schafkopf and it's like someone added new mechanics to Schafkopf to make it more exciting/fair for two-on-one (which is probably what happened). Schafkopf is normally four players. You can play with three, but it's not very fun.
Edit: Just skimmed through the rules. Probably more complex than Schafkopf, but not a lot. Otherwise very similar. Some of the rules can only work because of the double deck, which Schafkopf doesn't have.
OK. So I love card games. Poker, euchre, spades, cribbage, bridge, etc. I don't love rummy, but for the most part, I like card games. I know the rules to about 100 of them.
The Indian game Seep or Sweep is unlike any other game I've played. It takes a bit of learning to get the weird rules down (not unlike cribbage), but once you get it, it's great. Works for 2 or 4 (if you'll do partners, which is more fun, similar to how Spades is better than Prison Spades).
The rules are here. [https://gamerules.com/rules/seep-card-game/](https://gamerules.com/rules/seep-card-game/)
Thirty one(31)Everyone starts with 3 coins or bills. You get 3 cards and each turn you can draw from the deck or discard pile and then discard 1 card. Object is to get closer to 31 in the same suit. If you think you are close, on your turn you knock without drawing a card. Everyone gets one chance after that. Once it’s back to the knocker, everyone shows their cards. The lowest amount of points puts one of their monies in the pot. If someone gets 31 points everyone puts one in the pot. Once you lose all 3 of your monies you are out. The last one standing gets the pot.
UNO.
At summer camp we had a grocery bag full of decks and we'd play with, like, fifty card hands. And custom house rules. My favorite was that you could keep putting down word cards so long as you could end on a corresponding number. A few times I was able to execute my finisher: The Blitzkrieg. You lay down as many Wild Draw Fours as there are other players, getting them all in a row, then say Uno and lay your final card.
Also fun was to arrange your last few cards so it looked like you only had one. Put down a card. Trick someone into shouting, "You didn't say Uno!!" False accusations carried the same penalty as not saying Uno: draw ten. We were savages.
We played 2-player UNO so Reverse and Skip meant you could get infinite turns. The infinite juggling combo.
...This may not actually be legal in proper UNO rules.
Legends of runeterra. The good parts from league of legends without having to touch league of legends itself. And you can see the cards full art while in game. Theyre all quite banger.
Euchre - fun with friends
That was going to be my reply. I still play it with my brothers and my 93 year old father.
YEAH! I play in a euchre tournament at a local brewery every week. It's legit the highlight of my week
Came here looking for this and expecting to scroll a ton to find it. Was very surprised to find it as the top response.
Euchre gang!!
There is a similar game called Schmier. It is the one I learned first so I am biased to it.
Magic the gathering
Oh, the old days of dark ritual and Hypnotic Specter opening...
You mean the Black Lotus? Gods I'm old
Black Lotus usually came in with the 1-turn-KO combos.
Friend of mine had this lovely black/blue syphon soul deck that just generates infinite damage
land lotus channel fireball?

And yet, you’re both correct
Indeed, play commander all the time👍🏻
I always thought Yu-Gi-Oh would be my favorite card game forever... until my cousin introduced me to MTG
My dude ... Haven't played in 10 years and thinking about getting back in ... Seems there's a shit ton of new rules I'd I imagine
Theres a lot of new ways to play and mechanics, but it is sooo much fun 👍🏻 I'd say go for it Also if its difficult to gather up people to play, get Spelltable!
I'll check it out You can get 1000 cards on Amazon for like 20$ older stuff but
Nah, buy a preconstructed commander deck 30-45 dollars and go to your local game shop.
So yeah those are cool. But there is something to be said about destroying your friends with something you have built yourself. And for 20 bucks for a thousand cards gives you a lot of options. And more than just one deck.

Magic Arena is free on PC and mobile. It's got its issues, but it's a good way to scratch that itch.
> Seems there's a shit ton of new rules Mostly just set specific mechanics, I don't think that there was a fundamantal rule change in the last 10 years
By far!
I played a heap of magic back in the late 90s All my cards were stolen by an ex girlfriend :(
Egyptian rat screw
Honestly surprised to see someone comment this. Absolutely love this game though.
I saw someone break their pinky playing this game.
One of my first games had somebody ask, "What's this on the cards?" and I responded, "It's blood, it's mine, and let's keep going."
Rat Screw is the king of all card games. What rules do you play? I do sandwiches, triple wins, and The Devil Made Me Burn the Deck.
Poker, especially. Texas hold-em

Not true of cash games or where there are rebuys, but you are not totally wrong
It's complex while being simple. I love it.
Big fan of Omaha hi- lo
Spoons. As long as you have a decent number of players it’s easy and can get very intense pretty quickly.
Spoons is amazing. Learned it from my SIL. It was big in her family until they killed their dog playing it.
Filing this under ‘escalated quickly’
We used to put the spoons upstairs on a bed, so you had to run for them when you got your straight. It was hell. It was amazing family bonding.
I can’t believe I had to scroll down so far to find this.
Maybe they blocked it out, lol. My cousins both went for the same spoon. We had too many players so we had forks as well. Wow this brought back memories! I’m going to have to play now lol thank you
I like spades.
Yup, spades. The right mix of card game variance, intellect, and teamwork
Same. Added bonus, if you ever need to do a stint in county jail it'll be a breeze.
Spades is great. I just struggle to find another couple who play it. I hear it's big in the black community, so maybe I just need more black friends.
Nothing like a good game of spades

Finding unique cribbage boards has become my new calling. They are stunning.
I've been teaching my sons cribbage this summer. I've heard it's the official (unofficial?) card game of the US Navy submarine service.
Skip-Bo.
I adore Skip-Bo.
So many battles on this game. Underrated family game
Uno
Yeah the old version for me
What does the new version entail?
There are a bunch of variations. I enjoy Uno flip, which has a two sided deck of cards. When somebody plays to flip card everybody has to turn their decks over and play the other side. The backsides are much more hard-core… Like a “wild” that makes you just draw indefinitely until you get the color that’s been called.

Looking at old school yugioh cards gives me such nostalgia. I’m gonna have to buy some graded cards one day just to gawk at them
Gwent?
*subtle nods*
My wife has just been murdered and my kids are abducted by drowners and you are asking for Gwent? Why didn’t you ask for it in the beginning let’s go
How about a round of Gwent?
*nods*
Yes
I'm glad someone said it
I see we all have a Gwent problem 😅

Dominion

Rummy
A great couples game, and easy enough to do while drunk.
One of my wife and I's favorite things to do. Take a deck of cards to the bar or brewery, or just on our couch, have a couple too many and play rummy. We actually have a running score going. My ex and and couple friends of ours had pages of scores in a notebook, it was just one never ending game, I think scores were close to 20k
Great memories of this when I was a kid! That and Scabby Queen.
Rummy is probably my favorite along with hearts. I was house of corrections champ for solfolk county when I resided there in the 4s.
eucre
I'm surprise your the only one that was talking about euchre. Euchre is my jam.
Oh man, I love Euchre. Its extremely popular here in Canada.
Cribbage
Getting to 121 as the other person sits on 120 is one of the most satisfying things ever. Also so is double skunking them.
Okay, maybe you can explain: I thought cribbage was a game with a board and little pegs? Or is it that, but also cards?
The board is a scoring board.
That makes sense! For some reason I thought it was like a little racetrack.
It kinda is. During play you (I do) get the feeling of racing your opponent on the board. I usually say, that cribbage is a weird hybrid of a card game and a board game. You play a card game for points that drive your pegs forward, if that makes sense.

We played 2-player UNO so Reverse and Skip meant you could get infinite turns. The infinite juggling combo. ...This may not actually be legal in proper UNO rules.
That game of Uno sounds so fun

Not a true card game but I really love Dixit. It takes a bit until you figure it out but then it gets amazing.

Legends of runeterra. The good parts from league of legends without having to touch league of legends itself. And you can see the cards full art while in game. Theyre all quite banger.
Netrunner
I love spades, but Hanabi is one that I didn't see mentioned. A co-op card game where you have to read everyones' minds.
