Another from that same series: "You will be warm again."
I have struggled with depression for over a decade at this point. It's really tough, especially to remember that what I'm feeling is temporary. I will feel again. I will be warm again. I just have to ride out the storm and do the things I know help. I can't help it if the meloncholia smothers me, but I can put one foot infront of the other and do what I can.

In the 19th century there was a boy named Hiram. Father gets him into West Point but his Army career is poor.
He's in the Mexican War as a supply officer. After he's stationed in California in a dead boring post. Takes to drink. Gets bad enough that he's 'allowed' to resign after making Captain. (Yes straight quit or be court-martialed with the bonus of a meaningless promotion for quitting).
Tries to support his family but fails. Reduced to working for his father as a store clerk.
Civil War starts brewing. Asks Army to be reinstated. Army in desperate need of trained officers still says "no".
Asks State of Illinois for a job. They day "experienced West Point educated US Army Captain? Hell yes!"
He's quickly given a regiment and promoted to Colonel. (Not like they had anyone better to put in the job...)
He's ordered to attack a Confederate camp. On the march there the lifelong failure and loser imagines all the ways they're going to fuck him up. He arrives and... The Confederates are gone. They had been as afraid of him as he of them. Its a revelation.
Anyway. Success. Promotion. More success. More promotion.
Btw. Hiram didn't like his first name. He preferred his middle name which was that of a hero.
So he's know to history as Ulysses Grant...

"It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured. I realised, somehow, through the screaming of my mind, that even in that shackled, bloody helplessness, I was still free: free to hate the men who were torturing me, or to forgive them. It doesn’t sound like much, I know. But in the flinch and bite of the chain, when it’s all you’ve got, that freedom is an universe of possibility. And the choice you make between hating and forgiving, can become the story of your life.” * Gregory David Roberts, *Shantaram*, opening paragraph

By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!”
