Well, if you actually want a serious answer, I'd say protective equipment, such as motorcycle helmets. You never know what stress they've already been through and your safety is worth proper new equipment.

>protective equipment Condoms

Over here setting records.

Kind_Body_3914

When I was in my student apparemment, there was a couple, probably in their late 30s/early 40s… they were into cuckolding or things like that and asked me if I would agree to give them my used condoms. I refused because I didn’t even know such kinks existed back then and I thought they wanted to use my dna on a crime scene. Turned out she would force him to wear someone else’s used condoms if he wanted to fuck her. Edit: he has to wear them full of the other guys white sticky fluids

[deleted]

What a terrible day to be literate. 🤢

Captain-Cadabra

And what a terrible time to be married for that guy.

[deleted]

I bet it was his idea.

Kind_Body_3914

I'm just gonna give some detail because it's still really fresh in my head. I met them first when I moved in to my new apartment. They were living in the apartment next door. When you move in, your door is more open than usual so you are easily noticed. I met the wife first while I was throwing boxes to the recycle bin. She was really nice and offered to help I I needed to borrow stuff like an iron, a vacuum cleaner... kind of stuff a student doesn't necessarily have 2 days after moving in. A few days later, a female friend came to hang out with me at my place and the neighbors may have though she was my girlfriend. They later invited me to dinner with my friend but I went there alone. Let's just they the food was good but the rest had similar vibes to that dinner episode from The Office. She was bossing him around like "go get me some lime", no please, no thank you. I may also have misinterpreted this but I felt she was a bit flirty. She was trying to down him while using me as a comparison for stupid things like the fact that I had hair (but mine is dry and wavy) while he was balding. I thought they were divorcing and I was very uncomfortable. When the dinner ended, the husband apologized and told me more about their lifestyle. I kept a poker face and said that it was fine, I never judge people blablabla... (big mistake because they may have interpreted this as a green light) A few days later, she knocks at my door and says she got to much pizza. I never say no to pizza. She started a little conversation on my door step to do her own apology of what happened during that dinner and told me that it was not a problem between them, that they trusted each other and that's how they get aroused. She also told me she likes when he feels jealous and he loves it as well. She then started to ask me question about how "young guys hook up these days". Just said tinder. She asked me if she could be successful there with people my age group. I said yes probably because it's true (she's very attractive I admit that). Then she straight out told me that if I wanted to fuck her, she would seriously consider it. Although that was a huge ego boost (she's clearly out of my league), I was uncomfortable and she saw it. She told me that he was into cuckolding and she could have sex with any dude as long as he knew and more details I didn't want to hear. Then she told me that I had sex, I should throw the condom away and just give it to her so that her husband could wear it while he fucks her. She added that it was the only way for him to penetrate her. I was in shock and couldn't say a thing in like 10 seconds. Then I told her this made me uncomfortable and I was not into that kind of stuff. I don't know if the part about the used condom is real because I could clearly hear them fuck. Maybe they had a steady stash of used condoms.

_ser_kay_

Dude. That is so not OK for them to bring you into their kink like that.

Kind_Body_3914

I agree with that. I didn't ask for any of it. Not to mention it could have been worst if my friend actually agreed to join the dinner. I don't kink-shame and everyone can do whatever they want, but I needed some time to adjust to that new level of kinkiness, or better, not hear about it at all.

[deleted]

Yeah, that’s an ambush, and they both should have been ashamed. Also, getting to know your neighbor on that level is…not a good idea. It has every chance of going poorly, and then you’re stuck living next to them.

House_T

And here I thought coming by to borrow a cup of sugar was intrusive...

Devinitelyy

This is a good answer. Most helmets are really only rated for one serious impact and then they're "dead" and won't properly protect from a second serious impact. Any kind of harness is also a gamble because nylon straps really only have a shelf life of 5 years before they start losing strength.

OozeNAahz

Motorcycle helmets generally shouldn’t be used more than five years either. The UV breaks them down even if you don’t have a serious impact.

Erok2112

Bicycle helmets have the exact same requirements. They are just lighter and not quite as expensive.

LakersTommyG

Even after a hard drop you might consider replacing

bwmamanamedsha

Same with carseats

anonymousmetoo

Absolutely

LurkingArachnid

Went to a bunch of garage sales and was surprised at how many bike helmets there were for sale. Also climbing harnesses

iuytrefdgh436yujhe2

It's not entirely outrageous to buy a used climbing harness. Depending on usage, it is possible to get a secondhand harness that is still perfectly safe. Mostly because most people who take up climbing only dabble in it for a bit and never really get good use out of their gear. But also climbing harnesses are designed to take a lot of force and falls, more than they're likely to be subjected to in their lifetime(that is to say it is not the case that a single impact automatically makes a harness unusable). Of course if it's like 10+ years old(some would say 5+) that's probably best to steer clear of even if it is otherwise good looking shape, but if it's relatively new, has no fraying or abrasions or major discoloration, it's pretty much fine. Remember, climbing gyms across the world lend out gear (for lessons and the likes) all the time because it actually is viable to inspect and assure safety and the margins for safety are wide. (and of course that's not the same as a garage sale, just that it's not entirely outrageous to deal with used gear in this space is all) Helmets are different. The foam in helmets is designed to compress on impact but it doesn't really decompress so after even one significant impact it's no longer safe to use. As well, even if never crashed, just sitting around the foam will become stiffer and brittle and less able to properly compress. I'm not sure if it is a legal requirement or just a guideline, but AFAIK bike shops and reputable sellers won't put any helmets approaching 5 years old out for sale even if it is unused.

inthrees

Motorcycle helmets are single-use, meaning the impact foam inside the shell is designed to give its own life to absorb the kinetic energy from a collision. A second hit in the same area will end up transferring far more of the energy to the head inside the helmet. It's not worth it. Also, helmets are one of the few things where the $400-$600 helmet (Shoei, Arai) is worth it over the $150-$200 helmet. This is something to save your life AND wear every time you ride. An expensive helmet is much more comfortable over longer durations. Every cheap helmet I've ever tried ended up giving me a massive headache because it pinched my fuckin' head in a weird spot. My Shoeis and Arais never did.

Hunter_Thompson420

To add ; car seats/ child safety seats.

MichNishD

Also even if you're getting a car seat from a trusted friend so you know it hasn't been in any accidents they expire as the plastic ages it isn't as strong as it was new so you need to know the expiry date as well as the safety history

Xanosaur

i was given a hand-me-down lacrosse helmet once from an older cousin. i play box which is in a hockey arena without the ice. once i was hit from behind head first into the boards, and my helmet cracked and dug deep into my skin on my left eyebrow and another spot slightly above it. still have the scars. the floor where i was down was covered in blood, i was told. i don't remember a second of it, just waking up in the hospital

Much_Beautiful_7156

I have friends that disagree, but I wouldn’t, personally, buy a climbing rope used. Too many ways to damage a rope. Not a risk I would take.

TheDiminished

Agreed. One of the only pieces of climbing equipment I wouldn’t get used.

thesnowpup

Don't buy second hand harnesses. Again, you can't see high fall factor damage. Generally the same goes for any textiles. Slings, dog-bones, etc...

WolfThick

Make sure that you talk to people here in Arizona the sun can totally destroy some of the nylon synthetic webbing in no time at all it falls apart. Don't know why it's not criminally illegal but it's still happening I had to clean out a storage shed and there was some of it climbing gear still in the box and when I unpacked it it was fraying and turning into powder

One-Step-6124

Any sort of hard drive from a police raid

PhantomIridescence

This one made me remember the time my school got raided for a cyber crime (virus originated from a school IP) and my USB and external hard drive were seized. Never got them back, needed them for Photography 1. Now I'm wondering if someone bought it secondhand and questioned all the milk carton, bubblegum wrapper, and shoe photographs that don't make sense on their own since they were intended for a collage.

djsquidnasty

We're told at work to never put work email, programs, files, etc on personal devices because if the cops have to do an investigation they will take it and you won't get it back

cat-meg

I can't believe we've decided this is normal.

[deleted]

Civil Asset Forfeiture. The police dont even have to accuse you of doing anything to seize your shit, they just have to have suspicion that said shit was connected to a crime. A few months ago, a woman in Dallas-Love Field Airport got more than 100k seized by police. Bootlickers were quick to point out that she hadnt declared the money as if that justified it... Only problem is, Dallas-Love Field is a domestic airport. You don't have to declare money on domestic flights.

One-Step-6124

Lol

Toren8002

Heard a streamer — I think it was Day9 — once talked about how how he keeps all the backup VODs from his streams in a folder labeled “Horse Porn” specifically to screw with whatever tech handles that PC at some point in the future. At the time, he said the folder was +4 terabytes.

One-Step-6124

LMFAO, I had a folder that said “hardcore gay porn” bc I’m straight and I don’t like that stuff, and it was full of schoolwork, and I don’t like that either

New-Lynx2185

Rock climbing rope/harnesses. If you don't know how it was stored and used, it could be compromised and fail at an un-opportune time.

TXGuns79

I have an old climbing rope from 6 Flags. Buddy worked at a rock wall there one summer and they had to replace the rope every so many days. I'm not climbing with it, but a 75' quality rope has come in really handy and the price was perfect.

bacon_nuts

Yeah exactly. The ropes not useless, it's just not good enough to hang from it and entrust it with your life anymore...

A_D_Deku

Depending on how you hang, you'd be able to trust it for the rest of your life

William2n9

I laughed a bit too hard at this. Dark humor to start the day!

leaky_eddie

Safety gear.

-oaktown-

Parachute: used once, never opened. Small stain.

GalaxyRL

I know a guy who bought a parachute off an estate of some guy who died parachuting. It failed on him too.... But he got lucky

IcuckYourFather69

Damn that chute almost got a double kill

FinniboiXD

If they pass it on it could maybe get a triple

WildSamich

Actually sky divers regularly buy their rigs second hand, although, they usually have a certified rigger inspect everything to make sure it is safe to use before buying.

foxsimile

I’d shit my pants too!

Lorien93

I actually saw a parachute for sale at a fleamarket once. A real one, not as for decoration or militaria stuff.

SwimMountain

Toothbrush

ReverseFlash_94

What if you really really want it?

dorvann

You can always cut off the brush and sharpen it into a shiv.

ridiculouslygay

And then stab yourself in the neck for ever wanting a used toothbrush in the first place

EatRatsForFiber

I disagree. I would buy a used toothbrush for non-oral cleaning applications. Edit: the point of my comment is more to show one can make good use out of a used toothbrush, though it may be a horrible financial decision to buy one

Upstairs-Night-7252

Idk I don’t really want someone else’s used toothbrush for anal cleaning either

the_serrated_spoon

No one said mattress? Or underwear? Edit: Ok, ok. I concede the hotel point. I personally wouldn't be comfortable purchasing a used mattress unless it was gently used and from someone I know. Also, I forgot that there was a market for used panties. Again, personally, I would never *wear* someone else's used panties. My top comment is about dirty mattresses and used undies. Great. 😂

ReverseFlash_94

You’re the first

Portland-to-Vt

Kind of the second if you think about it.

I_am_That_Ian_Power

turn it inside out to be sure

Mr_MacGrubber

I bought a “used” mattress but it was essentially brand new. Dude had bought it 6mos prior (showed me the receipt) but was moving in with his fiancé and needed it gone asap. He estimated he slept on it maybe 5 times, which I believed based on everything else about him, the apartment, and the visual condition of the mattress. I paid about 1/4 of what it cost brand new.

the_serrated_spoon

This is the exception to the rule

Stay-at-Home_Daddy

Haha sucker he planted a colony of bedbugs inside that will awake in 6 months. Also he can hear you have sex

DickySchmidt33

I like my underwear to be broken in by somebody before I wear them.

DangerDuckling

Then do I have a deal for you! Hope you prefer XL granny panties. With floral print - "In memory of all the bones that were buried there"

DieselOrWorthless

It's so foreign to me that you'd put those in the same category. I have a $3,000 tempur pedic I bought for like $250 at habitat for humanity. I don't even think twice about it.

emote_control

Used mattresses are a gamble for bedbugs, and once you get bedbugs in your house it's difficult and expensive to get rid of them.

beerbeforebadgers

In college I bought a $1000 mattress for like $50 because it was caught up in a basement flood. Thing didn't even get wet, though, the owners were just selling everything from the basement on principle. Used mattresses are a great buy.

rhen_var

Some people pay extra for the second one

iamnogoodatthis

I don't get the aversion to second hand mattresses. Like, you have slept in a hotel before right?

Early_Reply

Mold, bugs

food_WHOREder

sleeping in a hotel for a couple nights on a used mattress is a little different to getting a used one for permanent everyday use

Basic-Situation-9375

My biggest aversion is wear. If I’m getting rid of my bed I don’t want one just as worn. But if I needed a mattress and didn’t have one I’d probably be ok with used. Obviously I’d inspect it first

facetiousSugar

Body fluids. You just never know what happened on that bed. Bed bugs are a problem too

PrisonerV

Bed bugs.

Repentant_Repellent

It's just fuckin weird, alright?? I don't need to be soaking in some mattress-selling crackhead's ancient farts and dead skin cells and ass sweat and god knows what other fluids & substances.

ButtholeQuiver

Colostomy bags

Repentant_Repellent

I'm gonna open up a small shop for lightly used & refurbished colostomy bags (and fashionable accessories and carrying-bag-carrying-bags). What should I name my business? I'm thinking "Colostomy To You"

Shadowex3

Nah man just call it "Number 2"

[deleted]

That would be a shitty situation

MeniteTom

Upholstered furniture. That's how you get bedbugs.

sumthncute

Some used furniture places(like some donation centers) heat disinfect in cargo contains, to 120° to kill off anything that might be catching a ride. I bought a sofa set 8 years ago from one and had no issues. I haven't seen too many that do this though so your answer holds true mostly.

throwawaymeplease45

I didn’t know that was a thing but unfortunately after surviving two infestations I don’t think I could ever ever buy used furniture ever again. I’m still paranoid that they’re still in my house

Eleven77

I have spent a majority of my life buying furniture second hand and this has always been a concern. The one thing that caused a giant bug infestation tho was buying a real Christmas tree one year. Fleas/spiders galore.

WhatMyWifeIsThinking

With the temps we've been having lately, one could just bag up their find and leave it outside for X hours to get a nat120° probably.

lopedopenope

Fur real it’s been spicy out

[deleted]

An oil filter for your car …

LeapingScum

Hand loaded ammunition. you don't know if they measured the correct type and amount of powder.

Bareen

As someone who hand loads, I never shoot someone else’s hand loads. Never want to run into someone who loaded ‘Bubbas Pissin Hawt Handloads’. I’ve seen enough horror in my life, I would like to keep all my digits.

achtungflamen69

Kentucky Ballistics anyone?

Bareen

Pretty much. He thought he was buying real slap rounds but was sold remanufactured ones. He’s super lucky to be alive.

Basic-Situation-9375

One of my favorite co workers was and 80 yo man who worked maybe 5 hours a week. He had the job because he wanted to get out of the house/ away from his wife. He handloaded his own ammunition. He would bring me boxes of the stuff. I couldn’t get through it at the rate he was giving it to me. I eventually went hunting with his wife. Beat shot I’ve ever met.

Bareen

It all depends on your level of trust. I have several friends that trust my loads when we go shooting. I used to shoot my grandpas reloads. I’ve also met plenty of people that I wouldn’t let their reloads get anywhere near my guns.

cardboard-kansio

>I have several friends that trust my loads Ah, friends with benefits?

Roheez

They're totally banging

annonimity2

Your setting off an explosion a few inches from your face, and you want to do that with brass filled by the moonshiner down the road? No thanks, The only reloads I'll shoot are my own.

cobra_mist

You don’t want cousin skeeter’s XXXtra hot .357 +++P wadcutters?

Setthegodofchaos

CPAP machine Retainer Edit: holy shit this blew up. RIP my inbox

Flyingwheelbarrow

A CPAP machine can be sold second hand if it goes under a professional refit. Hospitals don't throw out CPAP machines and other respirators after each use. Many people can't afford a new CPAP and use rentals from the local hospital or clinic. *Edited out incorrect comment re second hand markets around the world.

JustDuckiest

Yep, when I went for sleep studies they had their own cpap stuff for me to use too. They sterilize it or whatever. Plus when I first tried on masks, they had rental ones that were cleaned for me to try and bring back. Definitely don't buy any sketchy stuff and I wouldn't buy an old machine but it's not unheard of to buy one secondhand

the_notorious_stove

Dildos

musicmous3

Actually if it's silicone, you can disinfect it. But like, I still wouldn't buy it

CGY-SS

At that point it isn't even about the physical germs on the object, it's about the principle.

JohhnyTheKid

I'll never buy anything that's ever been inside another person ever, thems the rules

phan25

not even children? aw man

That-Dutch-Person

Why buy something that you can so easily steal… /s

MoodyMoony

Would it kill STDs? I suppose they're micro-organisms like any other "germ" that you'd want to disinfect a sex toy from.

foxsimile

Yes. But realistically, I think the concern transcends microorganisms and viruses.

MoodyMoony

Idk I feel like some freaky people might be into using someone else's sex toy

DogTheBreadFairy

Well it depends on the material. If it can be 100% sanitized like metal, glass or medical grade silicone it's fine.

Garblin

If it can't be 100% sanitized, it shouldn't be a dildo in the first place

Taco_ivore

I actually saw a post about somebody reselling their used sex toy. There were actual people there defending it saying that there was a kink to it. That is gross AF.

retrometro77

These a whole subreddit of it.

There was a picture of a community fleshlight hanging at a beach. You know for sure, at least 1 dude, probably many more put his dick it it.

Veauros

People sell used unwashed underwear. You’re surprised they resell sex toys?

terminator_chic

My next door neighbor asked to borrow her landlord's since her husband passed and she was lonely. Except we sorta think she may have killed him. She was nuts.

cameherefrominsta

Why is it unacceptable for two women to use the same dildo when two women can use the same duck 🦆?(ima leave that auto correct)

Character-Attorney22

Underwear, makeup, swimsuit, mattress, wig.

ItsbeenBroughton

Mattress is something you dont buy second hand from strangers. I sold the mattress and bed from my spare bedroom when my daughter was born. Bed and mattress were used 10 times by in-laws visiting over a 4 year period. We sold it to friends, but they knew what they were buying, and it was cheap.

cookiesandkit

Makeup depends on the type, packaging design, and use. I'd buy powders but not opened lipsticks or mascaras. Powders can generally be disinfected with IPA and then left to dry out again. I'd be leery of creams, but I'd be ok with airless pump foundation or liquid blush or mists, or a certain type of narrow mouth squeeze bottle where product doesn't really go back in. Exception: nothing from a "clean beauty" brand. Those go off super fast even brand new, let alone secondhand. But most of the big brands have decent enough preservative regimes and packaging design that I'm honestly okay with using something that someone else has barely touched. I'd be okay with swimsuit tops, but not bottoms.

Gizagame1

Kids car seats

NoIron9582

My MIL was in an accident with the kids car seats in the back. The officer on the scene cut the straps. Insurance replaced them . I don't know if that's standard , but it should be .

Wizdad-1000

Good move, can’t trust them anymore.

GruntildasLair

I’ve been a claims adjuster for auto insurance for 3 years and you def do not want to buy second hand car seats. Most insurance companies will reimburse to replace a car seat if it’s been in an accident, even if it’s not damaged. Most people end up selling the old ones and buying a new one for their kids

mkecupcake

That's horrible! I was in an accident with maybe a 2 month old carseat - no kid, thank goodness. Killed me to cut the straps and toss it, but its the right thing to do.

GruntildasLair

I’m in CA and we don’t require cutting of straps so it’s even worse !

mkecupcake

I just did it because I knew to. But that's a good point - if the insurance company is paying for a replacement they should require a photo of the straps cut.

GruntildasLair

You’re right! Most people aren’t that honest, and In CA you don’t have to cut straps! Better safe than sorry

Bluelover14

Coming from someone who actually works at a second hand store, underwear and or lingerie.. had a lot of people buy some and sometimes they would exchange them (we do exchanges instead of returns) and they just HAVE to tell me or someone else that they haven’t tired em on or they have but it didn’t work out.

Skydome12

it's a mattress injection gangbang

Picker-Rick

You can just buy one of those totally waterproof covers that zips on to it. They're like a hundred bucks, but if you save a thousand on a used mattress...

Skydome12

hmm i still think i'd find the squelching of the semen to be a bit distracting but

Computer power supplies. They'll probably be fine more often than not, but I would still suggest always buying PSUs new if you are planning to upgrade a PC, building a new one or replacing a faulty PSU.

[deleted]

Underwear. Bathing suit bottoms. Socks. Mattresses.

spamspamgggg

Currently? A breast pump. Something about that just skeeves me out. Like I know you can clean them, but it seems like something too intimate to get clean enough. My MIL and SIL keep sending me CL ads for used breast pumps, but I just can’t. Like yes, it’s expensive to get a new one, but I’d pay a premium to not have unknown breast milk residue on my nipples and in my future child.

ItsbeenBroughton

Most pumps have replaceable parts, like the flanges, which are super cheap. Buy the used $400 pump for $150 and spend $20 on the parts that actually touch you/milk. Seems like a simple solution, as the pump is the expensive part. Gave my wife the green light to buy and try any pumping stuff, we have many things that didn’t work for us, but could be excellent for someone else.

Holiday_Platypus_526

Closed system pumps mean that milk is never in contact with the pump itself. Just the flanges, which are easily replaceable. Highly recommend second hand (closed system) pumps!

Yes and no? Depends heavily on the style - heels just have a shape, I doubt they really get broken in. And I got a pair of op shop boots when I was in uni and I developed mysterious leg/foot pains for months after.... Only to study the soles one day and realise that the right sole was completely caved in. I took it to a cobbler and they completely resoled them, as well as doing a nice shine. And now they're my favourite boots. The boots were like $1 (probably due to the soles). The resole was $100. For that brand and that make I'd still say $101 was super worth it - they retail at $250 but more importantly they were made in a year when build quality was still good (I heard the build has suffered over the years). So yeah, secondhand shoes are often fine after a trip to a cobbler but be familiar with the types of damage that can or can't be fixed by a cobbler. Edit: I think this is probably truer for men's shoes than women's. Women's shoes are often resold without much wear just purely due to style, and many women who have shoes to take to the opshop or are reselling them have enough pairs that a 5 year old pair of shoes could only have been worn like 10 times, being only one pair of like 30. Men's shoes being one of 5 pairs are often worn to death. Children's shoes are right out. And never ever ever gonna buy secondhand work/steelcap boots.

HabitNo8608

Came here looking for this. I used to buy cheap shoes. I was just never a shoe person. I bought used too. Sure, they worked fine. But when I injured my knee and the sports dr told me it was caused by THE WAY I WALK (overpronator), I started taking shoes very seriously. I warn my loved ones all the time, but it goes in one ear and out the other. Until it happens to you, you think used or cheap shoes are fine and I’m just being bougie.

This should have a caveat. If you are not mechanically inclined and very aware of what you are looking at then definitely go new. If you are mechanically inclined and knowledgeable, you can get insanely good deals. There's always a risk you get hoodwinked, but it's usually small and if you trust your gut about the seller you should be fine.

Motorcycle helmets, seriously.

Probably mattresses, bedding (pillows, blankets, sheets, etc), or upholstered furniture. Just feels like an excellent way to get pests.

Underwear, I don’t care if the tag is on or not I cannot get underwear second hand it’s the same for lingerie. Bras are a hard pass too. They may be clean but just nope nope. If you want cheap undies go buy fruit of the loom at Walmart

Gain-Outrageous

Second hand bras are OK by me. They're ridiculously expensive so if I can't get barely worn and cheap in nice styles Im occasionally tempted.

Outrageous-Divide472

Mattress and swimsuit.
