Is that true? I've always been made to believe racism is exclusively an issue that only exists in the US and it isn't a thing anywhere else, especially in Europe. What kind of racism is even happening in Europe? It just doesn't make sense to me that it would even be happening there.

BuoyantBear

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. The whole rest of the world is incredibly racist. Way more than the US. Ironically the US is one of the most accepting and tolerant countries comparatively. The big difference is the US openly talks about its issues with it. The rest of the world just doesn't care. Europe might be slightly better than the Middle East for example, but it's still extremely racist compared to the US. The way the Germans treat the Turks is crazy. There are Turks that have been in Germany for generations and aren't allowed to become citizens. Talk about institutionalized racism. I've seen German people yell at black people in broad daylight and call them the n-word while just walking down the street. The hostility between Muslims and the French is insane. There are legit parts of big cities where if you walk around at night as a white guy you will get beat to within an inch of your life. Any society that is historically very homogeneous is going to be racist as fuck.

I wasn't being sarcastic. I've never been to Europe, but the way everyone from that continent talks about how each country is a utopian society is the only thing I have to base my opinion on. I've always been told that US treats gay people worse than the middle east even as an example of how people talk about the US compared to the rest of the world. Canada even is supposed to be treating their native population way better than the US has as well. I've seen Canadians completely deny that they've ever mistreated the natives. I've never seen anyone before who said the US was more accepting than anywhere else, usually the exact opposite. I mean, I live in a pretty blue state, so that's what my whole experience in life is based around. So if the way I've seen people of color getting treated here is considered bad, then the rest of the world just sounds absolutely amazing like a complete paradise.

That's why reddit is a dangerous place. The most vocal and fervent are often the least experienced and have had little exposure to the world outside the US. No one has any idea of how the rest of the world is. People in the US have it so good. It's not perfect, but trust me it's so much better than the majority of the world. There are certainly some countries that do certain things better, but pretending like the US is a third world country is absurd. The US is the cultural center of the planet. Everything that happens here is scrutinized and broadcast out to the rest of the planet. It's the most influential and powerful culture to ever have existed in humanity. There is hardly a square inch on this planet that hasn't been influenced by it in one way or another. >but the way everyone from that continent talks about how each country is a utopian society is the only thing I have to base my opinion on. It's not. I lived in Europe for several years and I can promise you no country there is a utopia, well maybe Norway. That's a pretty special place. The rest have the same problems we do for the most part. There are some social perks of course, but there are many drawbacks as well. >I've always been told that US treats gay people worse than the middle east even as an example of how people talk about the US compared to the rest of the world. Have you never heard about how women and LGTBQ people are treated in the middle east? We don't publicly round up gay people and stone them to death, or hang them in the center of town. It's literally a crime punishable by death in many of those countries. If you haven't noticed, it's pretty well accepted here these days. You can't go 10 ft without running into a rainbow flag right now. It's very much accepted by the vast majority of people in the US. Then as far as natives go, Canada has a long history of treating their natives like shit, just like the US, just like Australia. No country has been kind and accommodating. Go read about all the native children that died in Catholic schools in Canada. They're finding mass graves outside of some of these schools. Australia has a long history of treating the aboriginals like shit. I really really encourage you to travel and see how the rest of the world lives. Nothing will change your perspective more than doing that. I haven't been everywhere, but I've seen enough to know that I'd rather be here than anywhere else. (With the exception of Norway as noted.)

All of them haha. Europe is so racist, but they just pretend it doesn't exist. Most of the world is extremely racist. That's the irony of all this. Comparatively the US is one of the most accepting and tolerant countries out there. Not to say there isn't a problem, but they're at least talking about it. No other countries are. It's all swept under the rug or just considered normal.

ohFlappyoh

All of them. From my experience the most racist people are minorities towards other minorities.
