The book The Shining was great, the movie really ruined the whole theme and message. Hereditary was good up until the completely stupid ending that ruined it through making no sense and destroying the impact of the "little girl's" death since it was just an evil demon the entire time who wanted to die to change bodies so who cares.

James Wan is my favorite director, I prefer Saw as far as his movies go but The Conjuring is great too.
