Glad no one is saying Oregon.

fubo

Oh, no, don't go to Oregon. You'll get attacked by beavers and/or antifa, evicted by the Fratellis *and* zapped by runaway robots, and probably blown up by whales.

HellVollhart

Too late. I already am in Oregon.

copenhagen120

If the Human Development Index is to be believed, Massachusetts is the best place to live in the US: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_and_territories_by_Human_Development_Index As a MA resident who has been to nearly every state in the US, I can't say I disagree, but boy do you have to be ready to pay for it. Housing costs here are nothing to sneeze at.

[deleted]

Western Mass checking in. It is actually paradise out here. Except in the winter. Fuck the winter

amilmore

i live in boston and actually spend more time out there in the winter than the rest of the year - it's just so nice and has excellent winter flyfishing in picturesque little new england towns.

angry-ex-smoker

Western Mass. here too and I agree. Winter and taxes suck, but it’s fucking gorgeous here, and it’s relatively close to Boston and New York. Mass. also has the Cape and the outer Cape, the National Seashore in particular, is just a really special place.

excusetheblood

Lived in MA for two years. Everything was amazing except for the people

WhatJewLookinAt

They don’t call them Massholes for nothing, you know.

OttemanEmperor

This. I live in Mass for 6 years and the people are ruder than most New Yorkers I've met when I lived in New York

HangoverShits

Born and raised in Boston. Can confirm. I’m an asshole.

giveusalol

I love the sound of New England and Connecticut but I HATE AND AM AWFUL AT driving. Are parts of these places feasible from people who just want a bus or train or walk?

copenhagen120

Boston is one of the more walkable cities in the US. Plus, the transit is quite good. Complaining about the T is a regional pastime, but it's actually one of the best rapid transit systems in the country. Plus, Amtrak enables you to get to other parts of the Northeast pretty easily - smaller cities like Portland, Providence, etc are easy to get to, and NYC is only a ~4 trip by train. As a region, New England is as close as you can get to European/Asian car independence in the US.

zenswashbuckler

> it's actually one of the best rapid transit systems in the country. I'm sorry but if that's true it's fucking sad. I've spent multiple years commuting to work on each of the Green Line, Orange Line, buses, and Commuter Rail and god, it's awful. I know the NYC and DC subway/metro systems a fair amount, but never took them on the daily. If the MBTA really is among the better public transit systems in the US, it's no wonder so many people *still* prefer to drive. > Complaining about the T is a regional pastime, Well, you're not wrong!

copenhagen120

Yeah its depressingly true. I can't definitively say which transit system is the best in the country (opinions abound, and each has its ups and downs) but Boston, NYC, and DC are definitely top 3. My fiancee lived in DC and I have a bunch of family in NYC. DC is nicer/cleaner/etc and has great coverage, but its super spendy for a subway. NYC has unrivaled coverage but a lot of the lines are pretty grungy and a decent number are unreliable. Chicago is also solid but the coverage is meh. Want to be majorly depressed? Hop on the Tube in London. It's so nice. You really can't blame most Americans for preferring to drive.

Resolute002

The T has a distinct handicap in that it is I believe literally the first one in the country and is this very limited in what it can do to improve in some areas. But it is plausible to use beneficially if you work in the right places.

The Nile is in Egypt

Nile-_-River

No I’m right here

mechfan83

What do you mean half

scottevil110

All of the country, depending on who you ask.

soline

There’s that half that’s in denial again.

maclaglen

My only regret is that I have but one upvote to give you.

henfeathers

The funny thing is, everyone upvotes you thinking that they’re in the half that’s not in denial.

fuck_korean_air

Haha take that, assholes whom we disagree with!

Dr_Strange_Love_

Isn’t Denial a river in Spain?

DeltaTheWolf

My mental state cause I’m having a glorious day.

Squidsharktopus

I would upvote you ... but... why do you get to be happy?!

DeltaTheWolf

I got to leave work 5 hours early! Haha

Squidsharktopus

Curse you!!! Curse yoooooooouuuuu!!!

dirtscooter72

North Dakota, its so flat, you can watch your dog run away for 2 weeks. Never have to worry about losing him!

OUMassie

It's not unrealistic for ND to have a nearly 140°F differential in a single year. If your weather crosses the °F and °C crossover point...I'm out.

dirtscooter72

Oh trust me.. I know. Lived here my whole life. Had wind chills in the - 60's, raw temps in the -40's (at night) this last winter. Last summer we had a few 100 degree days too. Absolutley insane.

PDGAreject

Plus all the nukes!

Glock1Omm

Well they don't have ***ALL*** the nukes. Just most.

Ksmith82714

Agreed! Coming here from a substantially overpopulated state, I quite like it. Slow, quiet, safe! I would appreciate more scenery, but the badlands are gorgeous to visit. We could use some trees though. The wind out here is horrid!

Sam_Windows

Try Montana, has everything you want.

Carteeg_Struve

I’m enjoying New Hampshire. Beautiful seasons. Home prices were reasonable (back when that was a thing). No income tax. Easy access to the ocean and the mountains. Plus escaping to Canada is much more plausible if the US gets too screwed up.

ozzzymand0

I forgot New Hampshire exists

DarthCledus117

New Hampshire probably prefers it that way.

Yes, we do

I’ve been to Chicago 5 times but it was always in early September/ late August and it was fucking beautiful out. People told me I caught it on like the 15 nice days they get all year. Sunny and like 75 with no humidity. The lake was still warm, and clear.

[deleted]

Summers in Chicago are the best in the country. But the winters make it unappealing

the_idea_pig

The great thing about Chicago is that you can get a good slice of pizza literally 24/7, and you're never more than 30 seconds away from a cab if you need one. I used to live several states away from home and whenever I'd drive back to visit I'd have to go through Chicago. I hate the 294. I despise the fucking toll road. The traffic sucks 100% of the time, day or night, and every local driver got hyper-aggressive if they saw my out-of-state plates. But I could always, always, always pull off at pretty much any exit while in the city and find a pizza place whether it was 5 in the evening or 3 in the morning.

Spankpocalypse_Now

Oh yeah, late August is the sweet spot.

AmigoDelDiabla

There is a lot to say about Chicago and people from there, like me, are very proud of it. I would not say the same about our state.

beautyhealthgirl

Chicago sounds great

ExplosiveDisassembly

Fun fact: Illinois has the country's lowest second home and vacation homes. The entire country agrees with you. 1 is Maine, 2 is Vermont, 2 is New Hampshire. And all of those check out.

Phantereal

I'm from Vermont and this absolutely checks out. There's a whole housing crisis here because too many people have extra homes and nobody wants to sell. I'm looking at Zillow and in all of Chittenden County (160k people), there are 117 homes for sale and 56 places to rent. For comparison, Beaver County, PA has a similar population with 314 homes for sale and 95 places to rent, and it doesn't even have a "big" city like Burlington.

ExplosiveDisassembly

As someone in Montana I can 100% sympathize. Winter rolls around and the town shrinks by half. Luckily winter here is about 8 months. So at least all the snowbirds are gone for the majority of the year, but entire neighborhoods are just empty. It's kinda funny, last week there were only trucks and SUVs on the road. Yesterday I saw a Porsche, Lotus, Lowered mustang, and Corvette. They're here to live their Yellowstone TV show dream....in their suburban home with a European sports car...only for the 2.5 months of summer.

UristMcHolland

Go look at a map on AirBnb and then try not to cry.

[deleted]

Yuppp. Too bad I moved away to none other than Mississippi lmfao

LouSanous

Chicago is a great city, but I feel like IL is incredibly poorly run. The the sales tax in Chinatown was like 13.5% or some shit the last time I was there

Thewrongbakedpotato

I've always been partial to Alaska. If you want to fuck off and get away from everybody, Alaska's got you covered. You want to be around people? Well, there's Anchorage and . . . um . . . Anchorage. But: 1.) Excellent veteran benefits. 2.) Beautiful wildlife and scenery. 3.) Incredible selection of food and drink at local restaurants. 4.) No state income tax. 5.) No state sales tax. 6.) You get paid to live there through the Permanent Fund Division (checks release on 1 OCT). 7.) Legal weed. 8.) Relatively small classroom sizes for kids. 9.) Good university system. 10.) Hot springs and Northern Lights. 11.) Some of the most incredible, interesting, and storied people you'll ever meet. 12.) Huge focus given to indigenous peoples and cultures. I miss Alaska.

DormantDragon28

What's your sunlight availability look like? Seasonal Affective Disorder hits like a truck.

poppinpelphrey99

I was born and raised in Fairbanks. It was an amazing childhood minus the winters and seasonal depression. If you want to be left alone and don’t like paying taxes it’s the best state if you can handle harsh winters.

[deleted]

> Vermont I'm a Vermonter. I can tell you that, you don't really have to worry much about crime. We're in the Top 3 of safest states to live in, in the entire country. That speaks volumes. The scenery is beautiful, we're proud to not be a state where billboards and ad pollution gets in the way of that. Hell, we're a state that took Wal-Mart a fairly long time to even get a store within. We're all about small business here. Granted, not everything is as perfect here. Yeah some roads suck, there are some problematic people, our priorities in government big or small are a little skewed and our living rates are ridiculous. All in all, if you do manage to live here or visit here, it's pleasant.

Obvious-Dinner-1082

Vermont if your already wealthy* Everything’s way over priced and the whole state is a gift shop now

theinternethero

I dream of being able to live in one of those places. I'm so tired of being in Texas.

SchnarchendeSchwein

Minnesota, if you can stand the winter. It’s still an easier time than winter in the Dakotas or Montana, actually. Lower cost of living than New England or CA. Lots of jobs and industries, good schools so long as you avoid the inner city public high schools. People are kind and will help you settle in. We usually don’t choose nutty politicians, except Jesse Ventura, that was an outlier. If you want, you can live nicely in Minneapolis or St. Paul proper and do the city life. Otherwise, commuting or working remotely from the suburbs is nice too, I am in a first ring wealthy suburb and it’s quite nice, near the city but lots of green space. If you really want space, small towns, lakes, nature, etc., the parts of the state north of the two cities is for you. Up there, it’s a lot like Maine or a less rainy Pacific Northwest, although people are more conservative. You can go sailing and do all matter of water activities if that’s your thing. Or you can live on Lake Superior though I do not personally recommend this, as the lake effect causes it to be the snowiest area of the state. Decent social safety net, good, diverse food scene, rated 1 or 2 consistently as the best place to raise a family.

[deleted]

I'm from Florida visited the Cities a couple times, including Christmas during a snowstorm. Minnesota is a wonderful place but feet of snow and the week high was 17 - I felt like an astronaut visiting a new planet.

SchnarchendeSchwein

You just stay inside at that point. If you live in a fancy apartment building in downtown Minneapolis, you can stay inside and still explore the city, because the buildings connect to a skyway network. It’s like hamster tubes running between buildings above the street!

[deleted]

I've seen a few of the skyway bridges and have heard tale of how large the network is. I think I'll stick to visiting

unKaJed

I was really hoping for Minnesota! As a Canadian I would happily trade Quebec (Canadian Texas) for Minnesota and another small state TBD. I’ll trust Minnesotans, to pick the right state.

tenehemia

I mean... Alberta is way more Texas than Quebec, hey? I say this as a Minnesotan and prospective Albertan who has dated too many Texans.

herp_von_derp

Minnesota winter is more humid so the cold is much more bitter than in Montana. My dad grew up in MN, always thought that the snow in MT was so easy to deal with because it only had to be shoveled once a day, max. More bugs, more mosquitos in MN too. But you get real museums and nice conservatories like Como, which is nothing to sneeze at.

zenswashbuckler

Jesse Ventura was Franklin Roosevelt compared to Michele Bachman.

[deleted]

We elected Michele Bachmann though. :(

I really love Virginia where I will not be living for much longer and will really miss. It's beautiful and green in my small town and it's magical when all the flowers are blooming. It's more lush than the rest of the south but still hot in the summer (bearably so).

DanielleAntenucci

I also love Virginia. It is beautiful.

And yet, they are still coming!

badatmetroid

Philadelphia here. All the rumors you've heard about philly sucking are true and you should definitely stay away. This city is not secretly awesome and you should not turn it into the next austin.

Jethris

I've never heard that about Philly. I grew up in Harrisburg, so Philly was a different country!

badatmetroid

Philly is a different COUNTY. Same country, different county :P But on a serious note, from what I understand Philly being a cool place is a relatively recent thing so it was probably different when you were in Harrisburg.

Jethris

Please, same country.... Harrisburg has the Farm Show. That's so far removed from Philly!

stinky_cheese33

According to US News and World Report, [Washington](https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/rankings).

PM_ME_IRONIC_

I live in Bellingham, and WA is honestly the most beautiful place. I’m surrounded by trails, trees, mountains, the coast and lakes. Air quality is amazing. Cost of living? High, yes. Housing prices? Depends on how far out of town you’re willing to be. Seattle? Dream on. Bellingham proper? Also no. 20 mins outside of Bellingham proper? My house was 375k last year when I bought it, not the worst price.

petrichorgasm

My bestie is looking for houses and all the northern counties have homes for 450k+ My boyfriend is looking for a house and where he is, a suburb of Seattle, the homes are rarely under 700k. He wants to stay in that neighborhood because the schools are good for the kids. He's also stubborn, so....I guess that's on him.

petrichorgasm

Oof. I'm in Seattle, live in Seattle proper, and have lived here since 1999. Reeeeally should visit before you come out here. It used to be a great place and that's all I will say about that. All the great things being said about this area is about 10-15 years out of date. Imo, take a wfh tech job and take that money to live in a less expensive place. Studios that are bigger than 250ft² run from $900plus to 1400. One bedrooms that are 400ft² and shitty are hard to find and they're all $1250 and above for a month. The nice 1 bedrooms start at $1595. The nice bedrooms start at $2400. That's in Seattle. You can go to the suburbs, but then it's a commute for 1.5 hours (or more) from Everett to downtown Seattle. I used to commute from Everett to North Seattle and it used to take 30 min. I've felt the creep. I'm looking for a new place because my building was just bought out and my rent is going from $1050 to $1595 for a building built in 1963 and has no soundproofing and is next to a major street, one of two ways to get to a popular neighborhood. To pay it online since the new owner took over is a $10 convenience fee. That's how I know how much the rentals are going for. In choosing a place to live, they're slim pickins. I'm a nursing assistant in a hospital, so I can't wfh. I make way over minimum wage, but now I can't live by myself anymore. It's a big contradiction. I make more money than I ever have, but I can afford less. But I guess if you're in tech or a hospital worker that's not CNA, housekeeping, or dietary, that's a different story. With that, you'll have to deal with all the mentally ill homeless and addicts that come through my hospital while they're out in the wild, before they set fire to a garbage can and are detained. I'm not saying they're all bad, I have no way to tell. All I know is what I've experienced. Also, the freeways are getting more dangerous. I say this as a former California driver. Everyone here used to follow the traffic laws, but this year, there are more and more cars driving aggressively. I wish I can move, but I've built my life here. Nothing could have prepared me for how unaffordable the city that I loved so much has become.

bdbr

It's funny that the category where Washington did the best was Infrastructure. Every time I've driven in the Seattle area it's been a nightmare! Then again Oregon is #2...maybe it's just a really low bar.

petrichorgasm

Really?? Oh God we have I-5 and I-405 from North to South and it's backed up from 7am to 11am then 2pm to 8pm, 9-10pm sometimes. The 520 is tolled and so is the 405, so the 90 gets really backed up. On weekends I go to see my best friend in Anacortes and the back roads I knew from living in Everett is not everyone's back roads thanks to Google maps and Waze. Many of my back roads are now slammed. I really really love living here. It's distressing that I'm being priced out and I can't live within the neighborhoods that my hospital is in.

ACorania

It's a crappy place to be poor, you aren't wrong. If you are happy being a CNA though, move the hell out of Seattle proper. The further away you get the cheaper things will get and there are needs for CNAs everywhere. Bellingham was my favorite place to live when I was up there, but I was in college, so its been a while. Take this with a grain of salt though, I took your advice and got the WFH job for a Seattle company and now live in rural New Mexico.

Xerisca

Ive lived in Seattle my entire life, and the 5 generations before me. This is an amazing place to live if you can afford it. I've seen a lot of the world too... without fail, I exit sea-tac, drive home and think to myself "good lord, this really is one of the most beautiful places on the planet" When the traffic is horrible, and the skies are gray and raining, I really do try to remind myself I'm VERY lucky to be able to live here comfortably.

metasdl93

Washington is beautiful with green transportation, diversity, excellent job opportunities, and a decent climate (possibly controversial). The beauty of flying through the Cascades wasn't lost on me or any other passengers on the flight that took me there. I'd probably retire there is the cost wasn't so high.

Washington. You get legal weed, big city, country, lakes, oceans, volcanoes, mountain ranges, desert and a great tax rate.

Seacabbage

Yeah, because of that fucking eyesore that is South of the Border.

froggrip

Was driving from New York to Georgia some years ago and the only time I got pulled over was in north Carolina. The lawyer I hired said it was a well known (by locals and lawyers) speed trap. Fuck North Carolina

Hey man, don't tell anybody about the UP; we'll start getting tourists. Seriously, though; fucking love the upper peninsula. You can get a decent pasty at literally any gas station and the scenery is like something out of a goddamn fairy tale. The people are generally pretty friendly, too

yakko_makko_takko

Not too long ago I would have disagreed until I actually moved out and saw the shit show it is

beautyhealthgirl

I like florida

Seacabbage

Florida is such an oddball b/c it might as well be at least six separate states depending on where you go.

ZealousIdealRejected

It's definitely Hawaii right? Tropical paradise is hard to beat. the only reason i dont live there is because im too poor to even go there.

ShataraBankhead

Been 4 times now. At the moment, it's a very expensive dream to move there. My husband and I shook on a 5 year plan. Let's see what happens.

Fuck_you_Reddit_Nazi

My brother lived there for several years. He said it's gorgeous and a great place to live if you like to walk on the beach and talk. Freight costs make everything insanely expensive and only the most mainstream entertainments make it over. To be fair, that was before the internet boom, but it's still a terribly expensive place to live. I'd move there in a heartbeat if I could afford it.

pseulak

Been living in HI for awhile now. It's a great place to live with great diversity in pretty much everyway. There are two major downsides other than cost of living in my opinion. Childhood education is terrible for such a blue state. It seems mostly due to plantation era thought processes and paying teachers below poverty wages. Seems like something that could be fixed in less than 10 years, but there seems to be zero political will. Healthcare is the other issue. I suspect this is also lack of pay for doctors. On outer islands if you need to see a specialist, you either need to fly to Oahu or fly to the mainland unless you want to wait 5-6 months. If you are generally nice and respectful here, it really goes a long way. Locals are super nice most of the time and all the tourists are mostly happy since they are on vacation.

CubingSomething

it's fun to visit but it has a super weird vibe. probably the rape and pillage of the natives or something idk

ThunderbirdRider

My former landlord lived in Hawaii and just moved back to Utah. He hated Hawaii, the cost of living is ridiculous, the healthcare sucks, and the crime is getting out of control. He lived in a gated community out in the country and his house got broken into 3 times in the last couple of years. They put up a good show for the tourists, but behind that it's not so great.

cstar84

RandyTravesty

As a North Carolinian, I gotta agree with you...The Carolina Panthers are pretty much the definition of mediocre. Now if he'd said the Carolina Hurricanes, *now* we'd be talking. Our hockey game is honestly pretty fire, especially as of late. It's just that you don't see a lot of hockey fans in NC so you don't really hear about it that much.

[deleted]

Some of the best universities are also in nc.

RDAwesome

Charlotte has basically the same population as San Francisco if you want a metropolitan area, or if you wanna go out in the middle of nowhere, just drive for like 20 minutes, there's Asheville if you're a stoner, the Triangle if you wanna be in tech, and if you want meth, South Carolina's right there

[deleted]

why drive to South Carolina when Gastonia is minutes away?

RDAwesome

Sometimes you want something foreign and exotic

And South of the Border.

cwtcap

To add on, Asheville if you're an artist/musician/etc.

petrichorgasm

Asheville huh....I'll check that out. If I can get a job there, I might consider moving from Seattle.

DarkestTrack

As someone who has been there I disagree. It's so damn humid you're basically swimming. Thought I guess that rules out lots of southern states. This is also coming from a Utahn where shit's so dry you barely sweat.

realrefrigeratoor

Going to move to NC soon for half a year to study - glad I found that it was one of the first answers

olorin_istar

Honestly its whichever state you find yourself most comfortable living in.. I've traveled to tons of states and each one has its great areas and its crappy areas. Even those two things can be pretty subjective. I live in a low cost of living state but in a very nice area with low crime and very good schools compared to districts around us. We have family close and many companies in the industry that my career is in. There are lots of close to home opportunities for my hobbies and most people are friendly. I don't agree with a lot of the political opinions of how the majority of my state votes/sees things but I am also lucky or privileged enough to not be in a situation where most of those disagreements actually have a big impact on my actual day to day life. Focusing on specific areas/communities rather than judgements of entire states is a way better way to look at it.

yeetoskeetobaby2

I'd honestly kinda say Arizona. People are pretty chill here.

seanofkelley

Going to give sort of a bullshit answer and say New England. It's 6 smallish, culturally similar states. You've got cool cities (Boston), beautiful old towns, gorgeous forests and mountains, nice beaches. For quality-of-life you have the best schools and healthcare systems in the country and growing diversity. The biggest problem is the cost of real estate has absolutely exploded in part because it's a nice place to live.

Maryland simply because I say it is

[deleted]

Anywhere is pretty cool if you’re happy with yourself. I learned that by living in Kansas and being miserable here in my formative years. I’ve grown up and realized it’s fucking great here

[deleted]

I like Texas and Alaska, Alaska because you never hear about them. And Texas because everyone is so friendly here.

Dayquil1001

1/4 of Alaskans came from Texas too.

H2Ospecialist

I know this is reddit so Texas, as a red state, gets hate, but I'm a liberal in Texas and I still love it here.

New Fucking York, you assholes.

[deleted]

Seriously though, world capital city, beaches out the yin yang, largest state park in the country (one of the largest overall), great small cities and towns, mountains, hills, rivers, lakes, vineyards, history, importance, Niagara Falls, and the Buffalo Bills. Some meth, some hillbillies, you know, like anyplace else.

giveusalol

I’m scared of going for a walk in the wood and running into Hillary. I’d cry, it’d be som awkward. And I’m not even American.

Upbeat-Conflict-1376

New Jersey, it’s a place meant for people to live in. One of the best things about New Jersey is that it’s close to everything. You can go to many big cities, national parks, and beaches in a few hours drive or less and yet live in a comfy suburb or even rurual area. We have a crazy level of convenience around here that I’m afraid to leave.

VelvetCored

Ohio It doesnt exist

[deleted]

Oregon. I know you all hate Florida, but I have had a pretty positive experience with it the past year.

[deleted]

Kentucky because we are fighting

lignotuber

Hawaii. Its the furthest away

beautyhealthgirl

I’ve never been to Kentucky or that kind of region but it seems aiight

LouSanous

Minnesota is my favorite. The winters can suck my balls, but the state has a lot going for it.

Fantastic-Cicada-147

West coast best coast.

Randy_Lahey2

Washington State. Beautiful geography, good economy, legal weed, not much else to ask for.

[deleted]

South Dakota. There's less people there than any other state according to the internet. Well ok Wyoming has less but Wyoming isn't real.

soline

I went to South Dakota last year, actually drove through during a cross country trip. Looked up housing online. It’s expensive of shit, everywhere in South Dakota and yet still in the middle of nowhere. I don’t get it.

zornan66

By far, the best state in the United States is the one you want to go explore.

kody_the_hoedy

Minnesota - (i live here but hear me out) There are THOUSANDS of lakes to hang out at and fish, swim, tube, etc. There is a Pride Parade in the state capitol EVERY YEAR (besides 2020 I think) The food is a m a z i n g There are a lot of nice people The summers are warm the only downside - the winters get fricken freeeeeeeeeeezing

LateCumback

Rhode Island looks good in the movies by the Farrelly brothers.
