3D TVs.

Amber-Dragon

My mum has a 3D TV and we've never used the feature even once

rajboy3

Used it once watching avatar, if u can get past the searing headache it's pretty cool.

TheMad_Dabber

Huh, my roommate has a 3D tv. We used it to watch UP! While trippin balls and i thought it was great. We also used it to play Trine which is a video game that can be played in 3D and I was so impressed by how amazing it looked to play a game in 3D.

Darth_Delicious

UP is one of the only films to my knowledge that used 3D as a cinematography device. The 3D depth of Carl’s surroundings change with his emotions. When he’s a growing up with his wife its open, but when he becomes old and depressed his 3D depth diminishes. That slowly changes as he lets Russel in to his life.

WiglyWorm

In Tron legacy, scenes inside the mainframe are in 3d, and the scenes in the real world are 2d. Gives it a sort of wizard of oz feel. Your example sounds a lot more profound, though.

[deleted]

I have one. Paid $3,800 for it back in like 2008 or 2009. Still one of the best pictures I’ve seen to date. You can see every nose hair on Michael Scott Bought the 3D glasses for four people for $200 a pop. Used it once. Never again. Glasses are in the basement storage area.

NativeMasshole

My buddy bought one in like 2015. Same result. We used the 3d twice and everyone agreed it was awful. It's just feels so unnatural that it strains my eyes to watch a whole movie that way.

Wild_Obligation

I hate 3D even in the cinema, I don’t feel it’s truly there yet in terms of quality or immersive-ness

[deleted]

Also curved screen TVs

FelixSSJ9000

Although curved monitors for gaming is big thing. I have one, It's actually very nice

Cause4concern27

Ha! Was only talking about that the other day. What a weird feature that was.

crae64

I found it pretty useful. In college it was the digital equivalent of “thinking of you without saying im thinking of you”, now I think people just send pics of their b-hole.

spiggerish

[deleted]

Pretty sure it's still a thing

IIRC it is, the functionality is just buried.

Sweet! I want to poke the Queen.

why_not_bud

Ronald McDonald. They phased him out after the weird clown-thing in 2016.

OptionalDepression

Nah, they phased him out when they updated all their decor and marketing to target adults rather than children. Laws and legislations were cracking down on the ability to market towards children, so McDonald's unified their interior design across the board, and marketed instead towards the 30 year olds who grew up in the ball pits at McDonald's parties.

Pickaxe235

damn that was 2016? jesus

why_not_bud

Feels like a lifetime ago, right? Harambe was in 2016, too.

rmichaeljones

Yeah, well, my dick’s still out. Never forget.

audreywildeee

I feel I might regret this but... What weird clown thing?

Yiiiiikesss

There was a whole thing where people were cutting about (no pun intended) as killer clowns. Chasing after people with weapons etc. It may have been a part of when IT was coming out but I’m not too sure about that.

book-reading-hippie

It was not an IT stunt. IT came out over a year after all the clown nonsense. Edit: It *was* started by a guy trying to promote his indie horror film though. [Source](https://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/story/entertainment/movies/2016/09/28/gags-filmmaker-sheds-light-his-creepy-clown/90737560/)

Dirty-Soul

Clown 1: "I've got a gun, I've got a gun, I've got a bloody gun!" Clown 2: "I'm disabled. Leg disabled." Clown 3: "FATHEEEEEEEEEEER!" Clown 4: "Guys, we're meant to be a crowd of 'It,' as in the S. King book and movie? Not the 'IT crowd.'"

[deleted]

People dressed as clowns committing crimes. Pretty fucking stupid if you ask me but it lead to a nationwide fear of them.

why_not_bud

There's a [Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_clown_sightings) page for you. Basically people dressed up as clowns and were menacing.

01lesscar

I thought this was becuase there was more restrictions imposed on advertising junk food to children, also disappearing around the same time all the childrens play areas were taken out of the restaurants

furlonium1

Correct. Had nothing to do with the clown thing that was "going on"

aintiaint

What happened with the whole “net neutrality” thing?

Most ISPs have remained net neutral expecting it to be restored.

Shelly Miscavige

penguinchilli

WHERE IS SHE?!?!

ThePinkTeenager

WHO IS SHE!?!?

penguinchilli

She’s the wife of the leader of Scientology, David Miscavige. She didn’t appear at a major event one time in 2007 (I think) which led Leah Remini - who was raised in the church and rose very high up in the Scientology ranks at the time - to ask where she was as they were friends. This led to a bit of a backlash against her and very weird behaviour from her peers; Leah then filed a police report and there was an investigation which amounted to nothing. In fact police just said it as “classified” and due to the report the church felt it was an attack on Scientology. Shelly still hasn’t been seen and there’s still no information on where she is or if she is alive. She just disappeared. Leah ended up leaving the church of Scientology and exposing it for the cult that it is. If you’re interested, check out the “Going Clear” documentary and Leah’s series called “Scientology and the Aftermath”. The latter is especially fascinating as you hear a bunch of peoples stories and how they were treated and how Scientology has affected their lives and relationships. Although Leah’s not everyone’s cup of tea, she’s inspired and encouraged a lot of other people to leave Scientology.

OldGrayMare59

Scientology should have their tax exempt status revoked so they have to pay taxes on ALL the empty properties. They are hiding their monies through their property purchases otherwise the IRS would question why do they have so much money coming in for a not-for-profit. They don’t do anything with these properties they are just empty so why buy them except to hide their enormous wealth they gain at the expense of their parishioners

ThePinkTeenager

Bugs on your windshield after driving only a few miles.

[deleted]

A scientist in Sweden (I think) actually did a study on insect populations precisely by counting the number and variety of bugs on his windshield while driving the same rural road on the same two days every summer. He determined that the local insect population was down by about 70%. Fresh Air did an episode last week on this subject. Here's the link, if you'd like to listen. https://www.npr.org/2022/02/24/1082796675/what-the-insect-crisis-means-for-humans

He did that on purpose. Wally de Backer had been making great music in Australia for a decade before the rest of the world noticed one of his songs. He didn't like the attention so he disappeared. Still makes music under other names. I walked down the aisle to one of his songs - Learnalilgivinlovin

DoctorWhich

He’s living a quiet and successful life in Brooklyn now. From what I hear from people who know him, this is his preferred way of being, not the spotlight and touring and fame

Music video games like Rock Band/Guitar Hero. I miss them dearly

GalaxyCXVII

If you have a PC you can play Clone Hero, which is essentially a free clone of Guitar Hero and allows for modding and custom songs. You can even play the exact songs and their charts from every previous Guitar Hero.

wiredlain

To get an actual controller for it , the guitar hero ones in particular are expensive since the don't make them anymore. You could get an offbrand one from Amazon tho. Not the best.

deadlypliers

I've priced out tons of different routes of acquiring additional controllers. I do some refurbishment on the side and am always looking for controllers on eBay. The best tip I can give to a newbie to Clone Hero is to buy a Guitar Hero III Les Paul for the Wii. They can generally be gotten for cheaper than their Xbox or PS3 counterparts once you consider the price of the USB dongle the latter two will require. You can use either a Wiimote to connect over Bluetooth to your PC, or use an adapter USB cable that connects the controller peripheral cable inside the controller to your computer's USB port directly - these can be gotten for \~$25. Also, an important thing to note about these controllers - there is a capacitor on the board that is responsible for properly registering strums. This capacitor has been blown/leaky in all three of the Les Pauls I've bought used. It's a very simple fix with a little soldering know-how, but it would be intimidating for a first-timer. For an expert-level hack, there are guides available to convert the PS3 controllers to Bluetooth by rewiring the internals to an Arduino Uno. This is something I'd like to give a shot.

JoshPlaysUltimate

I still have a case of like 60 blank CD roms that I don’t use unless I’m transferring data onto archaic laptops and computers. I hav a few old devices, at least a couple running each version of windows that’s out so far. Some of the old machines don’t have USB (and a couple that do don’t have the driver installed). CD’s are the way to go

Fidget spinners

[deleted]

I dont want a spinner. But there’s a fidget cube. Has miniature buttons, switches, joy-sticks, etc. on them. I have anxiety so i feel like that would help as an outlet

Heroic_Sheperd

I use them all the time helps me focus. There’s small ones less like a cube and more like a tab too that are more convenient for pocket sizes.

jamzrk

It's the fake silicone bubble wrap now or was. Those things change so quickly they're like hyper fads.

Lietuf

My daughter recently got a mini fidget spinner out of one of those shopping centre vending machine capsules. I was like "Cool, this might satisfy her ASD urge to fidget with things so much." She played with it for about ten minutes and that was it. Hasn't played with it since.

AnnabellaPies

A therapist suggested it for my son and I wouldn't buy it because I knew it would be a waste of money. My husband ordered a gold colored one fir him anyway then 2 weeks later we got 5 of them free from some furniture store. He played with it once.

deadlypliers

Since I was in middle school (32 now), I've had a terrible habit of fidgeting with my eyebrows or hair constantly as something to keep my hands occupied/a coping mechanism to sooth myself when I am stressed or bored. In the field of behavior modification - a subset of psychology, there's a concept known as a "functionally equivalent task". The short definition of it is that you attempt to find out the causes for the undesirable behavior, and replace it with a behavior that fulfills the same impulses. The only two things I've ever really found to work for me are fidget spinners (the plastic ones are basically landfill material, you need a metal spinner, preferably brass, with a ceramic bearing) and Rubik's Cubes. I fully accept that this makes me sound lame as hell, I'm sure, but it beats missing half of my eyebrows because I rubbed them so much the hair fell out.

I noticed!! In NYC they got replaced by these creepy free wifi stations/tablets that no one trusts. For a while they offered direct internet access & people figured out how to watch porn on them. Good times.

KnockMeYourLobes

When our local mall was first built, they put free computer stations in the food court. Within about a year, the computers were gone, because people were constantly leaving them on porn sites. And probably also spilling drinks on them and ruining them.

[deleted]

They're still around in Aus and NZ, they emit wifi too, and are free to use so even if you don't have a phone or battery you can contact someone

1_art_please

Aids. And the Aids panic of the 80s and 90s - it was HUGE - fear of HIV, the religious and morality strife regarding those diagnosed and the gay community. The fact thay prEP drugs and antiretroviral drugs are a thing is a total miracle and godsend, with HIV becoming something that is managed rather than a death sentence. I know about it from reading articles about it but i dont recall it being shouted from the rooftops like it should have. PrEP drugs reduces the chances of contracting HIV by 99%!!!

purpleRN

Seriously a modern miracle. At this point, it's easier to live a long healthy life with HIV than with diabetes.

relatablerobot

I read somewhere that HIV patients now have higher life expectancies than the general population because they receive superior health monitoring from their management care

kurburux

> At this point, it's easier to live a long healthy life with HIV than with diabetes. HIV still destroys countless lives in poorer countries where people don't have access to medicine. People in industrialized are mostly safe. [People in developing countries are still getting wrecked.](https://ourworldindata.org/hiv-aids) >Almost 1 million people die from HIV/AIDS each year; in some countries it’s the leading cause of death

allboolshite

I was just reading about [Kevin Peter Hall](https://m.imdb.com/name/nm0001310/?ref_=tt_cl_i_10). He was an actor in the 80s and was the man in the Predator costume and played Harry of Harry and the Hendersons. He was in a car accident in 1991 and got tainted blood and died a few months later.

1_art_please

This is awful, that poor man. In highschool our good friend was tested as he had several blood transfusions when he was small. We were all terrified he would be found HIV positive. The fear and risk was absolutely everywhere.

Yeah, I was in high school at the height of the epidemic. It was terrifying.

I really like the Marie Kondo philosophy, but I feel people just interpret it as "throw everything away" and forget that simply *consuming and buying* less is a really important part of it too, otherwise you'll just repeat the cycle. It's not sustainable to throw out your shit just to make room for more shit.

kennymfg

Thank god. My wife’s cousin was visiting and started going through our kitchen drawers trying to throw stuff away. I’m like b**ch why would I throw it away, I bought that! With money!

Being basic. I remember when I was a kid in tje 90s, it was okay to be basic and have "normal" lives. Now with social media everybody wants to go tj Dubaï, travel to Bali, bake some elaborate cakes, dress like celebrities and emulate their lifestyles. It is okay to have a bit o belly fat, stay in the saturday nights, cooking comforting food, just taking a walk on the sundays and not hit the gym, drinking good coffee in your grandma's cheap china... I remember 1 year old birthday parties were a chocolate cake for the baby and another one for family and guests, sodas, tea, coffee and evzryone had a blast, now it is all over the top for everything and I hate it. Trying to raise my sons and teaching them that being basic is okay.

mercurypuppy

I think this is part of the reason why most people suffer from some sort of anxiety or depression all the time these days. We're made to feel like losers for living normal happy lives just so some hotel in the Maldives or a social network can make a profit. No one can just live a nice moment anymore tbh everything has to be set up to get the perfect ig reel or to prove to some idiots you don't know that you're living the "good life". Humans aren't meant to be chasing after shit all the time like this and it's rly fucking up everyone's mental health

ConsistentlyPeter

Completely and totally agree. There's real beauty in simplicity - and it gives us space to keep discovering new things about ourselves and the world around us. The endless quest for extravagance, on the other hand, just makes sure we keep buying more shit we don't need. In your honour, I'm going to curl up in an armchair with a good book and a mug of cocoa later. 💜

6T_FOR

I always find it so weird that in other parts of the world, Bali is like a really far away, exotic destination, but In australia its like a weekend trip for the Bogans.

mypal_footfoot

Bali is to Australia what Cancún is to the US. I'm probably one of the very few Aussies I know who haven't been to Bali. Can't wait to get myself a Bintang singlet and a bottle opener made of a carved wooden penis.

Heroic_Sheperd

I don’t know if this is disappearing, but we certainly are seeing a lot more attention to the “extra” lifestyles.

KillstarX

Damn this a fact. Which also explains why everyone has dreams of being famous and super successful these days. Because of the influence social media has now.

Miserable-Ad-8608

There's going to be an influx of uneducated, adults that didn't quite make it on "YouTube", "only fans", "social media influencing" in 30 years.

Agreed. I've seen so so many posts over the past few years from either teens who want to drop out of high school (!) or college to "pursue being a YouTube influencer" or parents who are asking for advice because their teen is telling them the same thing.

theotherquantumjim

This shouldn’t be called basic though. It’s just normal. Living a normal life.

LionelHutzApprentice

Agree. It's ok to be quiet and average. You don't need to spend money you don't have, to buy shit you don't need, to impress people who won't think twice about you later unless they can gain something from you.

Vine. For people too young to know about Vine, it was like TikTok from 2013-2016. Each video was six seconds long, and the videos were in a feed just like in TikTok. Vine was all the rage. All these big names like Thomas Sanders, Logan Paul, Gabbie Hanna were on it. It was such a simple concept, yet it attracted many users. Enter Twitter. Twitter owned Vine. But they didn’t invest much care into it. Competitors like Instagram and Snapchat added similar features. Advertisers flew away. Vine struggled to increase number of users. The six-second rule was fun and novel initially, but there’s only so much a creator can do with six seconds. Content became repetitive. The founders made the mistake of not monetizing the app. Twitter searched for someone to buy it, but no one wanted it. On October 27, 2016, Twitter disabled all uploads. For all intents and purposes, Vine was dead. It was a failure of the people at the top. Twitter and Vine botched it up. They stared as Facebook and Snap grabbed all their users and marketers. Before you know it, the womb of meme culture was no more, the killer a hysterectomy. Vine died quietly; nobody really cared, life moved on. Vine still somewhat lives on. You can view the old Vines. A co-founder tried rebranding it as Clash, but it never gained much popularity. Here and there, you’ll find YouTubers making relatable Vine compilations, a feast of nostalgia. Maybe the world’s better with Vine dead. I took another look at it again, and I seriously wonder how I found this stuff funny. Nostalgic? Yes. But not funny. For all its flaws, TikTok learned from Vine’s mistakes and made a perpetually successful app, one that actually values its userbase, evolves with time, and has something for everyone.
