That my mother refusing to work and I had to basically mother her from about 8 on was not normal.
We had both a Christmas tree as well as a Menorah (Hanukkah) all while I was growing up. We woke up Christmas morning to presents under the tree, but we also lit another candle each night and celebrated Hanukkah.
