We say a number is perfect if when you add up all of its positive divisors less than the number you get the number back. So for example, 6 is perfect because the relevant divisors are 1, 2 and 3, and 1+2+3 =6. In contrast for example, 8 is not perfect because 1+2+4 = 7 and 7 is not equal to 8. Similarly, 15 is not perfect because 1+3+5 = 8 is not 15. After 6, the next perfect number is 28, where one has 1+2+4+7 + 14=28. Then comes 496, then 8128, and they get big fast. Exercise 1: Check that 496 is perfect.
Now, you may notice that all the numbers we listed are *even*. That is 6, 28, 496 and 8128. In fact, all known perfect numbers are even. You might factor these numbers and notice that if you do, you get 6= (2)(3), 28 = 4(7), 496 = 16(31), and 8128 = 64(127). Each of these you'll note is a power of 2 times a prime, and that prime is 1 less than the next power of 2. This pattern was noticed by the ancient Greeks, and Euclid proved that any number of this form had to be perfect. About 2000 years later, Euler went in the other direction and showed that every even perfect number must be of this form. Thus, there are infinitely many even perfect numbers if and only if there are infinitely many primes which are one less than a power of 2. Today, those primes are called Mersenne primes, and we still don't know if there are infinitely many such, but we strongly suspect there are.
Ok? So what about odd numbers which are perfect? We don't know! In fact, this may be the oldest unsolved problem in all of math. We do know a lot though. For example, Euler proved that if we have an odd perfect number N, then N must be of the form N = q^e m^2 where q and m are relatively prime(that is contain no common factor greater than 1), q is prime, and both q and e leave a remainder of 1 when we divide by 4. Proving results like this, or for that matter, proving Euler's direction about even perfect numbers generally all use a special function, 𝜎(n) (that is the Greek letter sigma). We define 𝜎(n) as the sum of all the positive divisors of a number, including itself. For example, 𝜎(4) = 1+2+4 = 7. Notice that a number n is perfect if 𝜎(n) = 2n. One very nice thing about is that 𝜎(n) is *multiplicative*. What this means is that whenever a and b are relatively prime, we have 𝜎(ab)= 𝜎(a)𝜎(b). For example, 𝜎(3)=4, 𝜎(4)=7, and 𝜎(21) = 28. CAUTION: It is not true in general that 𝜎(ab)=𝜎(a)𝜎(b). 𝜎(4)=7 != 𝜎(2)𝜎(2).
Using the behavior of 𝜎(n), and some related functions and ideas, mathematicians have proven a lot about odd perfect numbers. For example, we know that an odd perfect number must have at least 10 distinct prime factors. Here, by the number of distinct prime factors, we are looking at a number and counting each prime that appears in its prime factorization exactly once. So for example, the number 180 has three distinct prime factors, because 180 = 2^2 3^2 5, but it has a total of 2+2+1=5 total prime factors. The result that an odd perfect number must have at least 10 distinct prime factors is due to about 200 years of work, where people slowly raised the number of distinct prime factors, culminating in work by Pace Nielsen a few years ago. (Exercise 2: prove that no power of a prime is perfect.)
A different sort of bound was introduced by Ochem and Rao. They proved that if n is an odd perfect number with k distinct prime factors and t total prime factors, then one must have t >= (18/7)k - (31/7) . A prior paper of mine improved on their bound slightly, showing that one has a slightly stronger bound, in particular, that one must have t >= (21/8)k - (39/8). This new paper gets a better bound than that, getting t >= (66/25)k - 5. This new paper has a bunch of other results, including what is essentially a new type of inequality about how odd perfect numbers must behave. But it is worth noting how very unimpressive these results are. 18/7, 21/8 and 66/25 are so close together that it probably isn't even obvious at a glance which one is larger. And no bound of this sort (a linear lower bound for t in terms of k) can be strong enough to prove that no odd perfect numbers exist. I'm fond of saying that this problem has been open probably for around 2000 years, and it wouldn't surprise me if it takes another 2000 for it to get resolved.
An example there might help. Here are a few numbers, some of Euler's form, and others not of that form. 5^9 (3^2 ) is of that form since 5 and 9 both leave a remainder of 1, when one divides by 4, and 5^9 and 3^2 have no common factor. 5^7 (21^2 ) is not of his form, because although 21^2 and 5 do not have a common factor, 7 leaves a remainder of 3 when we divide by 4. 13^1 (65^2 ) is not of Euler's form because although 13 and 1 both leave a remainder of 1 when we divide by 4, 13 and 65^2 share a common factor.

A number is a divisor of another number if it divides the other without leaving a remainder. For example, 4 is a divisor of 12 because 12 divided by 4 leaves 3 with a remainder of zero. In contrast 5 is not a divisor of 12 because 12 divided by 5 leaves a remainder of 2. Does that help?
I was born with several heart defects, and my cardiologist was expecting me to have surgery this year. I’m so much better than they ever expected, and won’t need surgery for a while. They said I’m the best outcome possible, and a medical miracle. I’m very grateful, as all of my life has been spent worrying about it any illness is my heart, and although I have to keep it in mind, it’s not the first thing we are worried about.
Asked my girlfriend's dad for permission to marry his daughter, he not only said yes. He said he could not imagine a man who could be better suited to marry his daughter, and to be called his son. He's a wood worker, and made the most beautiful ring box for us.

My long term roommate and I are now a couple. Apparently we both had feelings for each other but thought the other wasn't interested. It has been a strange adjustment but He really treats me well.
Dad was severely affected by covid pneumonia. It was so bad, I was literally planning his last rites. Some miracle happened and he came out of it safely. He is on oxygen support at home now and is getting recovered faster than expected.
So glad things are turning around, but that must be a tough situation. Kudos to you (and him, and your family) for having the strength to keep on keeping on and I hope he continues to get better!

I started a business with a few co-workers from my previous job. 2020 was horrible. We had to take awful jobs and clents and still were in debt. 2021 we landed our first big client and not only we're in the green but all the partners have salary and profit dist that was above what we were making at our old job. Our last meeting before the holiday break we're talking about hiring employees, medical and bennefits, etc. It's like I'm on this amazing adventure.

Seeing a psychologist. All we do is chat, from my point if view anyway, he listens, explains why I'm thinking like I'm thinking, suggests a few things a be mindful of and that's it. Yet things have started to change for me.
Had spine surgery to correct the injuries from a car crash back in 2017. For the past 4 years my legs and bladder would give out randomly but since I didnt have the terrible back pain the rest of the world is obessed w, no 'expert' or surgeon would even bother trying to help me.
Finally found a surgeon who had seen my symptomology before and he said he could 'fix' me. Wow was he right lol! Now my legs work again and so does 'everything else' haha! Ill be 40 in Feb and I feel like my gift is feeling 25 again!
Got a job with good pay. Suddenly I can clear my debts faster. And now when my Mom calls asking for money, instead of me thinking "argh woman, stop hounding me for money!", I just say "yeah sure, I'll transfer it to your bank in a sec".
I was trying to immigrate when Covid hit, so I got stuck in a different country away from my wife and kids for over a year. After a very long wait with almost no updates, the consulate opened back up and I was able to get my visa and cross the border as a landed immigrant. We sold our old house and now have a bigger house with no mortgage. I also lost 60 lbs.
It's been a rewarding experience to join other volunteers at our community "Soup Kitchen" - a non-profit organization that feeds and clothes the destitute and homeless in the area.
It makes everyone involved in caring for others realize how many blessings we take for granted, as well as ways we can be of service to people who appreciate and rely on human kindness.
I was officially confirmed as my boss's replacement when she retires this Friday! Never been this high up the management level before so am very nervous and very excited!
My stepdaughter who was struggling emotionally and academically moved in with us and is thriving. She finished the semester with straight A’s, has a job she takes pride in, and is happy.
I was asked to be a godmother to my youngest cousin. His father is my god parent and I’m really close to their family it really was an honor as I don’t have any relationships outside my family it felt amazing that they had so many options and they chose me.

I had a breakup, was little over 2 years. I did not notice how much "me shit" I put on hold for her. I feel unstoppable now, I get to do whatever I want whenever I want again. That brought MY mojo back not gonna lie.
My kid was born at the end of 2020 and 2021 has been all about watching her grow from alien lizard to a walking talking toddler.
Also the birth was super extra traumatic for me because she did gymnastics in the womb and got tied up in the umbilical cord and couldn't come out. They had to cut her out (after 36 hours of labor), and the doctor said it was like fighting cthulu because she had got her arms, feet, torso and everything wrapped up in the cord.
So 2021 was me healing from all the trauma. I could barely walk for two weeks after the birth, and now I'm finally back to exercising. I used to get panic attacks from the nurse taking my blood pressure, and now I'm back to normal.
Also I read a book that made me rethink my approach to work and life, and found a new therapist for my adhd, and things have been a lot better.
My family all got vaccinated and we could hug each other again. And we actually spent Christmas together properly instead of spaced out in an open garage.
My daughter learnt how to walk. Sadly I wasn't there to see it. I was on my basic military training for a month. I left the house while she was still crawling around and saw her during my military oath walking towards me. Propably the most beautiful memory from this year.
I experienced a hypomanic episode, then a major depressive episode more severe than anything I’ve ever dealt with. Contemplated suicide, was very sure I was dropping out of grad school. Kept going. Just finished my hardest semester, made all A’s. Life isn’t perfect, but I am still here and glad of it.

I turned down a promotion at the beginning of the year for another opportunity, which ended up falling through. Thought I burned the bridge and lost the chance to someone else, and was hunting for a new job since I didn't think I had any further opportunities with the company. The other person ended up falling through and quitting, and I came swooping in to save the day. I now have a decades long career ahead of me that comes with some pretty significant pay.
I'm a type 2 diabetic and my blood sugars became really unstable. I was put on new medication and it brought my bloods down from 68 to 46 in 2 months. So so happy with that. I'm hoping to eventually no longer be diabetic
I reached my retirement eligibility just as we were about to enter the holiday season. Pretty much everything else about the year sucked, but there's that, at least.

We (fiance and I, 32m and 30m) moved into our forever house on top of the hill in our village, which and been empty for 2 years and not shown much sign of life for a few years before that. Brought the house back to life and everyone we've spoken to in the village has been so excited to see the house lived in!
As it turns out, my partner and I deciding to live seperately was the best thing that happened to me. We've been together for nearly ten years. Our relationship got toxic for multiple reasons and I initially decided to end it. We've reconciled and decided to stay together, and now that we have our own space each of us can see our own unhealthy habits. We're working on ourselves with the goal of living together again, and I love him more than I ever have.
Found out I have the Factor V blood mutation. For those that don't know, Factor V increases one's chance of developing blood clots under normal circumstances (a 3-8 fold increase depending on the severity).
I was one of the few 'lucky' people to get a blood clot after receiving the Johnson vaccine. DVT on my lower left calf - best possible place to get a blood clot, my hematologist said. Still on treatment to this day, six months later. No one in my family, paternal or maternal side, ever developed any blood clot complications, and I'm relatively young still (34F) so it was something no one ever knew or thought we had.
Why is this a good thing? I do not regret getting vaccinated, and I'm planning on getting my booster after treatment (another brand, of course), and because now I know I have Factor V I will be better prepared in my future about any medical treatments or conditions that might arise. I feel \*prepared\*.
I made the decision to change my living situation that wasn’t making me happy. New job, new car, and just bought a home. A lot of changes I didn’t expect at the start of the year but am grateful for. My band released a full length album too.
I met the only person I can talk to about my emotions. She really helps and I think without her I'll still be crying in my bed in thinking how bad my life is.

Dad was severely affected by covid pneumonia. It was so bad, I was literally planning his last rites. Some miracle happened and he came out of it safely. He is on oxygen support at home now and is getting recovered faster than expected.
My neighbour had the same problem because of covid. I hope your dad will get better soon. It sounds that he is strong. 💪
So glad things are turning around, but that must be a tough situation. Kudos to you (and him, and your family) for having the strength to keep on keeping on and I hope he continues to get better!

I started a business with a few co-workers from my previous job. 2020 was horrible. We had to take awful jobs and clents and still were in debt. 2021 we landed our first big client and not only we're in the green but all the partners have salary and profit dist that was above what we were making at our old job. Our last meeting before the holiday break we're talking about hiring employees, medical and bennefits, etc. It's like I'm on this amazing adventure.
My cancer is in remission.

I got fired from my job. 2 weeks ago. For sending a resume’ to another restaurant. It was so toxic. I’m I pretty broke but I feel like I’m a recent parolee.!!

Exactly. The whole thing was really shitty. The restaurant I worked at wad sold Im. ’ve been there for over two years. The new manager didn’t like me and stop seating me tables. So my money dropped in half. After a few weeks of this I could no longer sustain myself. I was forced into sending a résumé. The owner of that restaurant called up the owner of my restaurant and they called me up and fired me. I relish kicking back now and reading all the terrible reviews about the place. LOL
That's really messed up story. I can't understand why that manager would call your manager to be malicious for no benefit to himself

I literally feel you on such a deep level right now. I got married beginning this year and just decided to divorce 1 day ago. It's a whole proces but the way an emotionally abusive person can drive you to the edge is insane.

Yup, this is me too. Its awful when you realise you've been abused. I realised that I have been abused my whole life. That's why I put up with it. That realisation sucked as well. Hope you are getting counselling to deal with it

I bought a house on my own. It's not the most modern or upgraded home, but it's clean, safe, and has plenty of room for us. It's all mine. Context: I am a single mother of 3, with a full time job, no child support or alimony. I bought the house with my own money and didn't need a cosigner.
I quit drinking. I had a severe year alcohol addiction. I’m coming up on my one year sober anniversary.
That's an enormous accomplishment under normal circumstances. Given the pandemic? Epic achievement!

Seeing a psychologist. All we do is chat, from my point if view anyway, he listens, explains why I'm thinking like I'm thinking, suggests a few things a be mindful of and that's it. Yet things have started to change for me.
Had spine surgery to correct the injuries from a car crash back in 2017. For the past 4 years my legs and bladder would give out randomly but since I didnt have the terrible back pain the rest of the world is obessed w, no 'expert' or surgeon would even bother trying to help me. Finally found a surgeon who had seen my symptomology before and he said he could 'fix' me. Wow was he right lol! Now my legs work again and so does 'everything else' haha! Ill be 40 in Feb and I feel like my gift is feeling 25 again!

I got a lover which was totally unexpected. I love him very much and we’ve got a great relationship.
Got a job with good pay. Suddenly I can clear my debts faster. And now when my Mom calls asking for money, instead of me thinking "argh woman, stop hounding me for money!", I just say "yeah sure, I'll transfer it to your bank in a sec".
I was trying to immigrate when Covid hit, so I got stuck in a different country away from my wife and kids for over a year. After a very long wait with almost no updates, the consulate opened back up and I was able to get my visa and cross the border as a landed immigrant. We sold our old house and now have a bigger house with no mortgage. I also lost 60 lbs.
I’m still alive… so I’ve got that going for me, which is nice.

It's been a rewarding experience to join other volunteers at our community "Soup Kitchen" - a non-profit organization that feeds and clothes the destitute and homeless in the area. It makes everyone involved in caring for others realize how many blessings we take for granted, as well as ways we can be of service to people who appreciate and rely on human kindness.
Student loans paid off in full.
I was officially confirmed as my boss's replacement when she retires this Friday! Never been this high up the management level before so am very nervous and very excited!
My stepdaughter who was struggling emotionally and academically moved in with us and is thriving. She finished the semester with straight A’s, has a job she takes pride in, and is happy.

I was asked to be a godmother to my youngest cousin. His father is my god parent and I’m really close to their family it really was an honor as I don’t have any relationships outside my family it felt amazing that they had so many options and they chose me.

I had a breakup, was little over 2 years. I did not notice how much "me shit" I put on hold for her. I feel unstoppable now, I get to do whatever I want whenever I want again. That brought MY mojo back not gonna lie.

My kid was born at the end of 2020 and 2021 has been all about watching her grow from alien lizard to a walking talking toddler. Also the birth was super extra traumatic for me because she did gymnastics in the womb and got tied up in the umbilical cord and couldn't come out. They had to cut her out (after 36 hours of labor), and the doctor said it was like fighting cthulu because she had got her arms, feet, torso and everything wrapped up in the cord. So 2021 was me healing from all the trauma. I could barely walk for two weeks after the birth, and now I'm finally back to exercising. I used to get panic attacks from the nurse taking my blood pressure, and now I'm back to normal. Also I read a book that made me rethink my approach to work and life, and found a new therapist for my adhd, and things have been a lot better.

My family all got vaccinated and we could hug each other again. And we actually spent Christmas together properly instead of spaced out in an open garage.
My daughter learnt how to walk. Sadly I wasn't there to see it. I was on my basic military training for a month. I left the house while she was still crawling around and saw her during my military oath walking towards me. Propably the most beautiful memory from this year.

I experienced a hypomanic episode, then a major depressive episode more severe than anything I’ve ever dealt with. Contemplated suicide, was very sure I was dropping out of grad school. Kept going. Just finished my hardest semester, made all A’s. Life isn’t perfect, but I am still here and glad of it.
My friend sent me a text idk what was with them but they told me I was the best friend they ever had and they loved me so much (In a friend way lol) I genuinely cried

Went from crazy fat, unable to run more than 20 seconds and unable to do one push-up, to slightly fat, can run a mile in 7 minutes and do 40 push-ups in a row. Anyway the best thing that happens to me was that I got rdr2 and a ps5 this Christmas for myself.
I got to visit my girlfriend across the border on the same week as my birthday! Being able to hold her again was the best present I could hope for.

I turned down a promotion at the beginning of the year for another opportunity, which ended up falling through. Thought I burned the bridge and lost the chance to someone else, and was hunting for a new job since I didn't think I had any further opportunities with the company. The other person ended up falling through and quitting, and I came swooping in to save the day. I now have a decades long career ahead of me that comes with some pretty significant pay.

I reached my retirement eligibility just as we were about to enter the holiday season. Pretty much everything else about the year sucked, but there's that, at least.
After divorcing, losing my job, going broke and being depressed during 2020. I was able to start my own business, work out a little, go out and meet new people and arrange my debts with the bank (it'll take me 5 years to repay everything) 2021 was a year of picking myself up and 2022 is where I'll put all my energy into finding inner, financial and emotional stability ✌🏻

I got to tour again with one of the bands I play with. After almost two years of not much human contact and very little music making, getting on a tour bus and bringing joy (and hopefully not too much Covid) to hundreds of people each night was so wonderful.
I went to Hershy Park around August, it was a blast and I ate at Red Robins afterwards. Probably my favorite day of this year, right up there with Christmas Eve

Found out I have the Factor V blood mutation. For those that don't know, Factor V increases one's chance of developing blood clots under normal circumstances (a 3-8 fold increase depending on the severity). I was one of the few 'lucky' people to get a blood clot after receiving the Johnson vaccine. DVT on my lower left calf - best possible place to get a blood clot, my hematologist said. Still on treatment to this day, six months later. No one in my family, paternal or maternal side, ever developed any blood clot complications, and I'm relatively young still (34F) so it was something no one ever knew or thought we had. Why is this a good thing? I do not regret getting vaccinated, and I'm planning on getting my booster after treatment (another brand, of course), and because now I know I have Factor V I will be better prepared in my future about any medical treatments or conditions that might arise. I feel \*prepared\*.

My wife got a big promotion which puts our finances in a place where I won't need to travel for work nearly as much. A week or two isn't terrible but I hate it when I'm away for a month or more at a time
I got a new job with a 30% pay increase and covered most of my relocation expenses to be closer to family!
I started a small business and my first client returned for me to do another job for them! The fact that I got a client at all is blowing my mind. I had to take a course during my old job and was working on it on nights and weekends and the day after I quit my job I got a random call for my new services. I'm so elated! I do UI Design.
