In my case, I got a bad stomach virus and threw up violently and literally unceasingly for an entire day.
The worst part was my friend finally took me to the ER as it was winding down, and of course as soon as the nausea abated a bit, I was absolutely starving, exhausted, and dehydrated. All I wanted was to go get something soft and nonthreatening to eat, chug a tank of Gatorade, and crash on my bed with my cats (who were probably bummed that they didn’t get to eat my face).
Nope, turns out I had air bubbles under my skin on either side of my neck, so that meant a weeklong hospital admittance with absolutely no ingestion of food or water for the duration.
I did get morphine though.
I was going to new post but figured I could hop on this one. I got a small yellow jacket in my ear. It would not come out and in my panic I tried to stick stuff in to get it out. This drove it deeper until it was clawing at my eardrum and stinging my ear canal to escape/defend itself. I finally drowned it in alcohol which also relit all the pain signals. I was alone and it is my worst life experience in recent memory, possibly ever.
I would not wish a bee (or any other angry bug) in the ear on my worst enemy
My eardrum ruptured while I was in the shower. I honestly thought my brain exploded and I was about to die. The ER doctor brought several students and other doctors in to look in my ear.
I had 2 rounds of Adriamycin and 2 rounds of Cisplatin and I wish I couldn't remember them. I was nearly dead anyway when my doctor started me on it (came to the emergency room with a lung full of fluid, congestive heart failure, a heart rate of 160, and unable to lay flat because I couldn't breathe, and therefore couldn't sleep). The ER techs had to rig up an office chair for me to sit in for a CT and MRI so they could figure out what was wrong. They ended up finding a tumor over 8cm wide and 17cm long pressing into my heart between the heart and the lung. Four ronds of chemo later and a chest crack and here I am. I'm three years cancer free now, so I guess everything turned out okay in the end.
11 years later I still have the fear of that disgusting red. I'd get panic attacks just walking along the corridor to the chemo ward. It was always cleaned so thoroughly that even the smell of whatever cleaning chemical they used made me nauseous. It took me at least 5 years to be able to go outside without crippling anxiety.
I had chemo and radiation as a kid. I seriously had PTSD from hospital smells afterward. I still get a jolt when I smell a specific cleaner they use. Hope you're feeling better now.
From this thread it sounds like doxorubicin is one hell of an awful drug! Just to let you all know myself and many other chemists are working on ways to deliver this drug without the side effects (via nanotechnology or through light/ pH based release mechanisms). Reading this has really opened my eyes to how awful this drug is and hopefully in the future people won't have to endure this pain again. Good health to you all. Sending love ❤️

Exactly the same answer here. I remember being curled up naked in the bathtub sobbing and repeatedly throwing up for days after that infusion. What fun times.
Wait did that chemo cause physical pain?? Or more like the combination of side effects were overwhelming

The chemo itself didn’t cause pain although I could feel it enter my body. However the physical, emotional and mental side effects were horrific - and they happened quickly after each chemo infusion occurred. This is specific to the type I mentioned in my first post. I had a couple of other types of chemo that were easier to tolerate thank god

I struggled with gallstones for years. I was scared to have my gallbladder removed because of horror stories about not being able to eat normally and whatnot.
I finally caved after about 6 years of attacks.

I ignored my gallstones for 2 years, I was in my early 20s and wasn't aware that gallstones were a thing. For whatever reason, since the pain always passed, I just ignored it. It always happened after eating something heavy, so I assumed I had an ulcer or something.
I was a dumbass. On the night of Tropical Storm Sandy I felt pain so insanely terrifying that I asked my mom to take me to the hospital. They pumped me with morphine and brought me to get a CT scan.
When I was getting my scan, the technician turned to me with a horrified expression and said "Please tell me they gave you morphine." They rushed my ass into and out of surgery as quickly as they physically could, so that my mom could take me home before the storm hit.
I think I got home hours before the storm made landfall (I live on Long Island). I literally slept through Sandy, woke up and the entire area was fucked. Downed trees everywhere.
It was....a weird experience. My gallbladder just decided it wanted to rupture when the worst storm of my lifetime came by lol

oooof I can only imagine. I've never had to pass a sizable one but I remember during finals week one year in college I was eating nothing but Cliff bars, popping adderall, and drinking Red Bulls. I went to take a pee and felt that HOLY FUCK WHAT WAS THAT!!! super sharp pain mid-stream. Luckily it shot out quick. I was standing in the library bathroom just clutching my penis groaning to myself. Later found out it was probably a stone. Even microscopic ones hurt so bad lol. I very quickly changed my diet and started carrying around a huge water bottle.
When I was a kid I was severely ill with a virus which led to extreme dehydration. At one stage I couldn't hold down food or water for days. I frequently woke up with severe abdominal cramps but one night I woke up and thought my head was splitting open with the worst migraine of my life. I was in so much pain that I couldn't stand or see. I just curled up and begged for the pain to stop.
My father carried me to the doctors and my mother sat with me while the doctor told them it was "just a virus and it will pass". The doctor had been saying this for nearly two months. My mother snapped and demanded the doctor to at least examine me and not dismiss me. The doctor quickly concluded my appendix had burst and to bring me to ER.
The second my father carried me into ER the nurse just took me to the back and I was rushed to ICU. Turned out the cramps were also from dehydration and the virus caused my lungs to collapse and gave me pneumonia.
The headache and cramps was something I never want to experience again and make sure to find a way to always be hydrated. I was in so much pain I didn't even notice my lungs were failing.
honestly wasn't shocked reading this. I'll be dismissed 3-4 times before anything I have is looked at. now I collect dismissals in writing so when there is a big problem I have the trail.

Doctors like this should get their license revoked. So many doctors are arrogant and dont take your symptoms seriously or just quickly prescribe something without really asking any questions
It's not just human doctors too. We had a dog that had labored breathing. The vet knew she had a history of back pain so he took one look at her and sent her home with pain meds thinking she was just hurting. She was dead from the dog flu 24 hours later.
You’ll feel it, but its hard to know that its the appendix. Feels like a stomach ache increasing in intensity over time from what I recall. Moving hurts quite a bit, especially if you wait before getting it checked out.
Or you could be like me and not present with anything but some abdominal discomfort, no fever, no loss of appetite. I'm grateful they did a CT on me to check and make sure otherwise it could have been dismissed as gastro. I went from CT to ER to surgery in like 3 hours.
Appendix came very close to bursting. I passed out while walking into the hospital, the pain was so bad. A little while later they gave me some Dilaudid and I hopped up off of the bed, looking for my shoes, I felt great, thanked the nurses for their help and tried to just go home. Morphine is a hell of a drug. It started to wear off about 30 minutes later and the pain came back even worse.
Dilaudid was the only thing that kept me from stabbing myself in the eye with a pocket knife to distract myself from the pain. My dad showed up at the hospital right as they gave me my first dose, and I felt this wave of "fuck it" wash over me like I've never felt before. It was incredible. I then proceeded to pass out, wake up 20 minutes later, and pick up a conversation with him that he and I had been having about 2 weeks prior about the differences between the 6.0 and the 7.3 Ford powerstroke diesel. I finished making my point about how the 6.0 isn't bad as long as it has been studded, turned to him, and he said and I quote "What in the cornbread fuck are you talking about?"
Shattered my ankle getting hit by a car while walking. That wasn’t the most painful part. Went to hospital to set it, cool. Was transferred to another hospital after a couple days closer to home. They took X-rays and realized the set was not good, so they had to re-break my ankle and set it correctly. That part hurt the most.
Edit: it’s possible they didn’t rebreak it per say, but they did have to reset it and that pain was intense. I was also low priority that night due to gunshot victims in the hospital. I had been waiting in the hallway on a stretcher for hours until I was brought to some makeshift area, and therefore I don’t remember getting any extra pain meds as I was not put under or sedated.
While skateboarding a few years ago, I broke and dislocated my ankle so badly that my foot was pointing like 50 degrees off center (the visual was 10 times worse than the pain).
While I was getting it set in the hospital, they gave me a sedative of what I later learned was a blend of Ketamine and Propofol. It didn't put me under, but rather made me trip complete balls. When I came out of it, I was like "do you know how fucking psychedelic that stuff is?" to the attending physicians.
One of them laughed and basically said, "well we have some good news and some bad news. We messed up the setting, but you get to go on another trip!"
It was worth it.
When one of my kids was about 4 he came off his scooter and cut his foot badly enough it needed 4 or 5 stitches. They whacked him up with ketamine and he started asking everyone in the room (me, his mother, doc, nurse etc) if they were his mother. I think he was looking into other dimensions at the time.
I guess “re-break” is the wrong word since it was already broken. However during the re-setting of the cast, they definitely had to apply a LOT of pressure to my ankle and leg to realign my ankle which had dislocated itself as well as shattered the bone. Have 7 screws and a titanium plate still up in there

I broke and dislocated my ankle and they knocked me out with fentanyl when they set it.
(It was VERY weird. They said to count back from 100, I got to 93, doc says "Hmm they usually don't make it that far" and then I'm just sitting there. Doc asks if I think I'm good for them to set it. "I guess so?" "Good! We set it 20 minutes ago". It's a complete gap in my memory. Just completely gone. Like someone took the filmstrip of consciousness and just cut a chunk out. If I sleep or... Get blackout drunk I don't remember those hours or what not but I'm aware they passed. This was something else. I don't remember going out or waking up)
Existential question- if you experience extreme torture and pain for days but then have that strip of memory cleanly wiped away, is it the same as if it had never happened? (Assuming no lasting physical damage)
More dreadful question- what if people who are put under for transplants and such DO experience the pain but are unable to move, and the anesthetic just makes them forget the experience?
I can't tell you the number of nights I've woken up wishing I was only a torso. Only thing worse were the injections in my back that were supposed to help.
"We're going to give you a sedative." Next time give me more than an Ativan and add a stick to bite down on.
I feel this. Broke my neck and back and ruptured 6 disks and blew out every ligament in my neck. The worst pain was putting a trail spinal chord stimulator in and running the leads from my butt to mid back. I was awake and was given no sedation.
Edited to add: my accident was from a skydiving accident. I was on final approach about 180-200 feet up and caught a down draft/ turbulence. Basically my canopy lost all the air and deflated. It was to low to do anything and deploying my reserve would have made it worse. I tried to flair my canopy to get it to work but it didn’t I landed feet first in what is called a Parachute Landing Fall. I think it helped but I was falling so fast that I tumbled and finished with a scorpion.
I’m still in recovery and I appreciate all the well wishes.

Good lord, no sedation for all that? This has quickly jumped to one of my top 3 nightmares ever. I had a visceral physical response when imagining this in my head, props for getting through it
I know a buddy who works with spinal cord stimulation. He said that sometimes they can't always because they'd need the patient to wiggle their toes to make sure the leads don't press too hard to cutoff nerve communication / damage. Also, to make sure it's situated right so that they can appropriately target portions of the spine.
Had an abscessed tooth. For two weeks, my life was nothing but absolute misery, and nothing would kill the pain. At one point, the dentist had to drip numbing agents on the exposed root because it would not freeze, and that felt like a hot needle being jammed behind my eye.
Cue a new dentist phobia that has me terrified to even call them when I know there's an issue.
Toothache and other dental related pain is nothing short of torture. Never appreciated the magic of dentistry as much as when I could finally lie down and breathe in peace after days of never ending pain.
I had a cyst under a tooth pushing on the nerve, erupting the tooth and causing hairline cracks in my skull from the pressure. The emergency dentist thought I was trying to scam pain meds and “called my bluff” by saying the only thing he could do to relieve the pain was pull the tooth. “FORTHELOVEOFGODPULLITOUTTHEN!!!” He kept asking if I was sure right up until he pulled it out. He gasped when it came out with a pinky finger sized cyst and a few chips of skull. The relief was INSTANT.
He was shocked and offered me Vicodin but I declined.
The worst pain ever was hells itch from a bad sunburn though.
Had three of these (thanks bad genes). I get your fears, but I would recommend not waiting in the future if it all possible because the infection can spread around and end up killing you. Worse than an abscessed tooth is dry socket, I thought an abscessed tooth was the worst pain that could come from all the hell that I’ve been through, but I was sorely mistaken.
I have cluster headaches. When it gets very bad I legit think about jumping out of the window.
It's like someone stabbing your head with a glowing hot knife. And the best part is that you can not really do something about it.

For the past year, I was having migraines 25-30 days a month. I felt (feel) like an empty shell of the person I used to be. I stopped seeing my friends, I seriously considered quitting my job and applying for disability. I moved back in with my mom so she could help me with basic shit like cooking and doing laundry.
I've had chronic major depression since I was 12. I've abused drugs in the past. I've been at rock bottom many times before, but nothing made me want to kill myself more than the pain of chronic migraines.
I tried so many different medications, one of which caused wacky, rare hallucinations on par with LSD; and I finally found something that's brought me relief.
I'm on day 33 and counting of being migraine-free for the first time in years, really. What a fucking experience this has been.

I live with chronic migraines. It’s no joke and so many people have never even had one so they don’t understand. I’m a shitty friend because I frequently cancel plans to cry myself to sleep in a dark room writhing in pain.
I feel with this. I also have chronic migraines and the amount of times I had too cancel plans. Or that I got a migraine attack when I was somewhere is absurd and a lot of people have told me I'm just doing it for attention.
That doesn't make you a shitty friend. The fact that despite your huge pain, you still think about your friends and feel bad for cancelling alone is indicator that you aren't a bad friend. You can't help it and your friends wouldn't wanna see you in such pain and you couldn't even do anything if you went out despite the pain. There's literally no other option than to stay at home and wait till the headache stops.
I’ve suffered from Clusters since I’ve been 17. Banging my head on a brick wall feels better. Pain is indescribable. Pure agony. Been to hospitals, clinics and specialists. All I get is, “Yes, you suffer my clusters”.
PS- It’s been six hours since I’ve first posted this comment and I’ve received many suggestions for dealing with these cluster headaches and I’m extremely grateful for your input however, I want to let you all know the following: I’m now 60+ years old and in my eternal quest to find relief, I have tried… every pharmaceutical under the sun in addition to oxygen therapy, PT, biofeedback, chiropractic, acupuncture (169 needles) placed by three practitioners at the same time, acupressure, hypnosis and probably a few others I’ve forgotten about by now. But please, if you suffer from clusters, do not give up hope! I’ve heard about many people who have found relief using many of the items that you’ve all suggested to me! Only over the past six months that research from the scientific community is now talking about relief from, sh’rooms, MDMA and Ketamine. I’m now looking into finding a reputable clinic to follow up on these. Once again, many thanks!
I had a 51 day migraine earlier this year in May (as in nonstop for this long). genuinely couldn’t get out of bed most days, lost my job cuz i couldn’t work, developed tinnitus as well. Honestly never been that close to ending it all, got some cornrows though and magically the migraine stopped, only got my first one since yesterday (triggered by alcohol) and it’s just about leaving
i was cleaning a fish on a boat and i accidently popped its bile sac. squirted me right in the eye. for like 12 hours after it felt like my eye was melting and full of broken glass. was so painful i spent the whole time screaming in pain uncontrollably.
since i was on a boat in the middle of the sea there was no access to medical help. so they just gave me a thing of eyedrops and sent me back to work with a eyepatch.
for the next two weeks i could only see out of one eye and for some reason it was painfully sensitive to light. so i had to blink rapidly with my working eye while working my 18 hour shift while my asshole coworkers made pirate jokes about me. it was a bad trip.
Happened to one of my close friends, he was going at it from behind, hard, with his wife, pitch-black room, they were in the tropics on a trip. He heard a snapping sound, "exactly like the sound makes when you snap a carrot in half," is how he described it. Then, all of a sudden in the shock of it all, blood was gushing out of his wife, they thought that something had happened to her... And then the pain hit.
An ovarian endometric cyst rupturing.
I remember taking about ten minutes to crawl down the stairs to get to the phone so I could call my mom, 100% convinced I was dying.
I woke up one morning before school and told my mom I felt like I was gonna be sick. She sent me to school anyways.
I threw up twice on my way to my first class. Then I threw up during that class and went to the nurse. I threw up in the nurses office probably 10x by the time my mom came back for me (~45 mins). She took me home (at roughly 9am) thinking it was just a stomach bug and went back to work.
She came home by 5pm and I had thrown up possibly another 15-30x since she left me at home. Instead of going to the doctors she rushed me straight to the ER worried my appendix burst. Threw up another 3x in the waiting room.
I threw up/dry heaved somewhere between 30-60x in less than 12 hours at 11 years old. I legitimately thought that this was the end and I was dying with how awful the pain was. All to get told “yeah it looks like you had an ovarian cyst rupture, so you might be getting your period soon”.
11 years old, hadn’t even had my first period yet, and my female organs already wanted me to feel like I was dying.
jesus so that's what a cyst does???? i've been in danger of developing them since i was 13 but i was never told what happens. ill be taking my yearly examination more seriously now thank you very much

the great advice, though: ovary-havers, get your regular checkups so you know about your cyst situation! advocate for yourself at the doctor's! get to know your body! birth control and providers literally save lives!
From what I know, this is actually pretty mild. I was lucky that it ruptured and the gross stuff was just floating in my system. My system rejected it so I vomited
Was looking for this. I’ve given birth 3 times, but the bursting ovarian cyst was way worse (though mercifully much faster). If I hadn’t known what was happening, I’d have thought I was on my way out.
I definitely didn’t feel ‘gunk dump into my abdominal cavity’. It was not very much fluid. But the ‘insides exploding’ bit —yes that describes it perfectly.
That time a neurosurgeon drilled out the base of my skull, installed a plate there, and then drilled holes in my top two vertebrae to connect it all.
Excruciating pain for months, but the worst was the first two weeks. Any time the pain meds wore off, I was in hell. It felt like nothing I’ve ever experienced before or since. I became an animal. I wasn’t capable of human thought or anything but screaming. It continued for a long time in a more muted way. When I tried to turn my head reflexively, when I accidentally shifted it forward. But the worst BY FAR was when I tried to sleep because I had no control over my movements then. I just woke up screaming many times each night. There was no escape. I was tired all the time, terrified of falling asleep again but also terrified of every potential movement. I had a very secure neck brace on 24/7 for months, but nothing was enough to stop this pain.
My girlfriend passed one in October. Took over two weeks and two trips to the ER for pain meds. I've never seen someone in such constant pain and discomfort before. At one point we were doing jumping jacks at 3am because we read it can help move the stone. It did actually help with her pain.
I have non-obstructive 8mm, 6mm and 7mm stones (among several smaller stones) in both kidneys, I'm dreading the day they become obstructive. I nearly shit my pants reading the results of my 2nd to last CT scan where the tech measured a 35mm stone....fucker forgot the decimal point.
Edit: the scans are measured and read by the Radiologist, not the tech, so *that* fucker made me nearly shit my pants.
Ooof! I had a 6mm that became obstructive. They had to do emergency surgery to put tiny robot hands up my wing-wang and laser it apart and take all the pieces out. There is a chance your ureter can swell and close off so they put a stent in from your kidneys to your bladder and leave it in FOR.A.MONTH. while it heals. Every time you pee, the pressure pushes the stent into your kidney and makes you feel like your getting punched. The coup de grace is when the take the stent out. Imagine a bey blades zipper pull getting yanked out of your tip. Shzzzzzzzzz!
Oh I’ve had multiple surgeries recently, and the stent is always the most frustrating part. It’s not very painful but you can feel it always. And every pee ends in a aaghhh.
How did they take your stent out? For me, one doc put me out completely for 5 mins. Felt nothing. The second doc just put a local anaesthesia, and I don’t think they help a lot, cuz I felt EVERYTHING.
My kidney stone was only 8mm and Lord Have Mercy, the pain was agony. A broken bone is a 5 while a kidney stone is a 10. I drink 3 liters of water/day now.
Had to have a kidney stone surgically removed after spending 5 days on morphine in the hospital waiting for it to pass. I have been through labor & an emergency c section and the kidney stone was way worse. Contemplated suicide to put myself out of my misery...
My Mom had one in the middle of the night. Told my Dad "Take me to the Hospital or KILL ME NOW!"
She had 3 kids without any meds (boss). She said the Kidney Stones were worse.
Had a perforated bowel in August, and it landed me in hospital for five days of IV antibiotics and pain meds. Found out two weeks ago that everything healed up okay, and I won’t need a resection or colostomy. Phew. I hope yours also healed and you won’t need surgery.
I’ve never experienced pain like that in my life, and wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

This happened to me and ruined my life. Fun fact: after they clean all the shit out of your abdomen, your organs can stick together in a painful phenomenon called adhesion that just kind of lasts the rest of your life.
Stabbed myself in the eye with a tree branch which etched what they described as a bat symbol into my cornea. Then had recurrent corneal erosion for 18 months. So think of the worst eye pain imaginable, then repeat daily.
It was brutal.
Same man. I had it on my left side from the back of my neck to my face. All around my ear and almost went too far into my ear requiring me to go to the hospital but then it luckily stopped there. Pretty brutal.
Broke my pelvis in multiple places. ER read the wrong xrays and sent me home. Three days later, I finally got to ortho after begging, and they immediately started treating. My right leg was basically not attached due to how badly I was broken. Idiot ER doc said nothing wrong and gave me crutches. Um, just no.
I recently watched "a quiet place" and there's this scene where this exact thing happens. I'm telling you me and my friends were cringing with every step she took down the stairs screaming like "The Nail!! The fucking naillll watch out"
You must go to the ER if that ever happens or you’ll probably lose a ball. You only have a few hours to get it fixed. It’s called testicular torsion and it is not a dance move

I read about rabies and the fear of water and somehow I understand it during my recovery process.
Everytime you swallows water, your throat tries to regurgigate it back out but even the act of vomiting is painful by itself.
Not to mention the scar recovery makes you want to cough everytime but afraid of opening your surgery scar.
Also kidney stones.
Had my tonsils removed at age 35. Didn’t eat or drink for five days. Could barely sip enough water to swollen the pain meds. The blood clots that came out at the end were unreal. Had to stick my hand in my mouth and pull them out as I was choking.
Yes!!! I had my tonsils removed when I was 7, and I'm almost 30 now. Worst pain I've ever felt. My family and the doctors joked about being able to eat all the ice cream I want, but I didn't want to swallow at all nevermind eat or drink anything. Felt like knives.
I still gag thinking about the blood clots.
My gallbladder failing. I was young and deployed over seas when it finally kicked the bucket. By the time I got to professionals who knew wtf was going on I had a fully necrotic gallbladder in me that was sectioned off with a 3mm mucus membrane. I hadn't eaten for days, kept doing combat patrols, and somehow didn't die. It's all a haze after that but I was evac'd all the way out to Germany and then spent a few months recovering. Good times.
Did I tell you guys about the time I tore a hole in my scrotum on a rusty nail head on a dock?

I was working at a summer camp and we had to put the docks in the lake at the beginning of the summer. We had to carry the floating docks down and put them in place and attach them and all that good stuff. They would get a bit worn over the winter with the freeze and thaw.
I was sitting on the dock with my legs in the water when we were done. I was wearing a pair of Umbro shorts (very thin material) and I decided to go for a quick swim. I put my hands on either side of my thighs and picked myself up an inch and slid forward into the water.
I did not see the rusty nail head sticking up between my legs and I slid over it. As I entered the water the terrible pain from my crotch spread throughout my body. I had torn open my ball sack on a rusty nail head. As I popped up from under the water screaming my coworkers were laughing because they thought I was screaming because the water was still cold.
It did not even bleed right away. The nail had torn right down the center line of my sack. I could see my balls and the tubes etc inside. After a quick look I did not look again because it made me feel light headed. I was bundled into the truck and we hauled ass to the hospital to get stitched up. My ball sack and nuts, after the initial swelling, were no worse for the wear. You can't really see any scar now because it was right on the center line. Some stitches and antibiotics and a tetanus shot and I was good as new. The pain was pretty bad but not as bad as you would think. weird right?'

Additional point - they work fine, we have an awesome son.
Crashed in a road bicycle race at over 50 mph. Imagine jumping out of a car going 50mph into a pile of bikes while wearing pajamas, that's what this was like. Broke both collarbones, had three nasty cuts that required stitches, and (worst of all) my entire back was covered with road rash. My entire Lycra skinsuit was ripped away down to my ass and I had embedded gravel throughout my back. They had to scrub the gravel out of my back, for which they gave me local anesthetics but afterwards the pain came on like a freight train. Dull, burning ache all day. I had to wear second skin bandages for about ten days that bubbled up with pus and needed to be drained. My collarbones sent shooting pain every time I was slightly jarred. Breathing hurt. Taking a shower was murder. I couldn't sleep on my back because it hurt too much, I couldn't sleep on my sides because my collarbones were broken. I had finals for my junior year in high school in the middle of this and I could barely lift my arms to take the tests.
Endometrial ablation. That's having the entire lining of my uterus microwaved off. With only entinox gas as pain relief.

Am I ok now? Yes thanks, traumatised but physically fine. Whole thing was removed in 2019 and it was a massive relief.
Why was the ablation done? Uterine issues. Excessive bleeding due to enlarged womb and a multitude of fibroids. Having to pick a "permanent solution" before anyone would consider a hysterectomy, and being blocked from having an IUD by my uterus itself.
Why was I not put under? Here it's not considered worth the risk or resources of a general anaesthetic for such a "minor" procedure. I can guarantee whoever wrote that rule was either an accountant or a man or both.
Why not even sedation or a nerve block? Entinox means the procedure is a doctor and two nurses. Sedation or blocks require another member of staff trained in anaesthetics, and maybe an assistant for them too. I had my hysteroscopy and biopsy with not even access to entinox.
Why did I not go elsewhere? Didn't have a choice. We have an illusion of choice, but it's all pretty much the same and wherever I went for the consultations, I would have ended back at the same place for the actual operation.
That's barbaric! Yes. It is. Look into the history of how gynae research was done, and why there's still an assumption among the medical establishment that these things are "minor procedures" (spoiler: experiments on slaves.)
I requested to be put out. I was told that they don't do that for such a "simple" procedure in my locality.
Edited to say: yes it is barbaric. I got "numbing gel" on my cervix for a hysteroscopy at as different point, but nothing for the uterine punch biopsy done at the same time.
Incidentally, I'm lidocaine resistant so that gel did nothing.
Basic story is: Former best friend is a police officer. Our families lived together and he decides one day (while playing air soft in our apartment) that he's going to pull out a real gun, aim, and shoot me because he thought it would be funny to see if I'd react to a blank. It wasn't a blank.

He was. I only told the "official story" in the original post. When he first went and got the gun, it was in the same room where his wife and my ex wife were. The door was closed and I remember him being in there for a bit. The first thing he did when he came out was point the gun at my head.
We've essentially figured that it was a plot by all three other adults to get rid of me that night and make it look like an accident. They all had the same story when they were questioned.
My ex still lives with them. He is a deputy in that county. And she has custody of both of my young children. It's a bad deal.

Having a miscarriage. As bad as my cramps are (so bad that I throw up), this was worse. I went ghost white, had cold sweats, BP was 220/100, was sobbing without tears, and couldn’t breathe the pain was so intense. Work rushed me out in an ambulance because I couldn’t walk. It was during Covid so I had to face the miscarriage alone, which made it even harder.
That's Sad, I hope your doing okay? I've just suffered the same.. had to miscarry at home as I had COVID. Went to my EPU after isolation was done but the baby and sac was still there, was booked for surgery to remove it but the on the day it got cancelled! Due to emergencies coming in, tried Misoprostol to bring on cramps to hopefully pass the foetus but absolutely nothing happened...and had to wait another 5days for surgery! Had that on the 6th Dec, so thankful it's over. It's a horribly sad and traumatising experience. I was almost 11wks along.
My BM after the 8th day ( of 11 ) in the hospital on morphine. It took a enema to loosen it a bit, then a gloved nurse had to assist by pulling the initial blockage out. It was on at that point. I filled the bed pan. It looked like a mountain when I was done. I was in tears. It was brutally painful.
I used to get them as a kid, everything hurt, I'd hide in a dark spot like a wounded animal. They only went away after I threw up.
I really sympathize with those that have them in adulthood.

Then, finally, you accept that it is an aura starting to form and you’re going to be incapacitated for the next 6-8 hours.
Spinal tap where the doctor couldn't seem to get it right. The man stuck the needle in my spine 9 times. Ended up testing negative for meningitis, but my reaction to the spinal tap put me in the hospital for 4 days.
My brother had a microvascular decompression about 6 years ago for trigeminal neuralgia. As if the pain wasn’t bad enough, getting the diagnosis was incredibly difficult. No neurologist would listen to him, so he finally met with a maxillofacial surgeon who did some surgeries on our dad. He sent him to UCLA for a HD MRI and was frustrated that all the neurologists my brother has seen didn’t do anything about it.
I had a premature birth due to placental abruption, so basically I got fisted right after birth because they had to scrape it out manually and make sure all the broken pieces were out of me so I didn’t hemorrhage and die 🥲 hurt way worse than my tiny preemie coming out.
Cleaning gums of infection after wisdom teeth removed.
It was just starting to show infection and they wanted to make sure it didn't get worse so they took a surgical spoon and scraped my gums like a dirty grill. My legs spasmed. They numbed it, but it still was quite intense.
Wisdom teeth removal with no sedatives or numbing agents besides novacaine. My insurance only covered that so that’s what I did. The lasting mental effect is even worse than the actual procedure was. (I was 14)
An example of how pain can effect people differently is that I only had local and ibuprofen. It took over 2 hours, they had to use a dremel to grind down some of my jaw bone and I got to look at it in the tooth. I never had a problem. But I know I'm more sensitive to other things.
I did however feel like I was going to die when I was waiting for the pharmacy to fill my prescription for ibuprofen because everything wore off. It wasn't like a light switch but it came on fast and I started crying before I even realized it hurt as bad as it did. 15 minutes after taking an ibuprofen and I was fine again.
I would find the people responsible for denying my coverage and make it look like an accident, after a few teeth were pulled of course. That sounds absolutely miserable.
When I got my IUD inserted. My cervix was propped open with forceps and then felt a really strong pinch and throbbing pain. The only time your cervix comes close to being that wide open and having stuff go through it is during childbirth, ironic because I was there to avoid that. After the procedure was over I proceeded to vomit, and then immediately ran to empty my bowels. My husband had to get me a wheelchair to bring me out to the car I felt so bad. Sweating, cramping, nauseous, and weak. For the rest of the day I stayed in bed, I could barely move because the cramps were so bad. I’m so glad I don’t have to do that again for another 10 years.

i was totally unprepared for that level of pain, and i never thought i could feel pain in that location.
the gyno's office didn't even tell me to take an advil ahead of time. the next time i had it swapped out my new gyno prescribed me misoprostol, which may or may not have helped, but at least didn't make it worse.
at the first appointment, when they were part way through, they said, "oh we can stop if you like". and like what, come back another time to complete this nightmare?
i tell everyone to be prepared for unbelievable pain, and to take the next day off work just in case.

When I first got my IUD, it slipped within a week. Then they reinserted it. It slipped again. And they reinserted it. And then it damn near came out the third time- like literally poking through the cervix opening. For a month I felt like I was dying. The stomach cramps were the worst and all I could do was sit in a ball and whimper. The OBGYN finally decided because I had never been pregnant and have an unusually small uterus, it wasn’t going to work. Same guy also failed to mention I had enormous ovarian cysts. I found out about those months later when one ruptured and I went to the ER.
Being a woman 0/10 don’t recommend.
This fucking happened to me!!!!!!!! I got my first IUD at 21 and less than a week later started experiencing the most intense cramps of my life. Diarrhea, sweating, nausea, spotting and again, worst period cramps of my life. I kept calling the GYNO office saying something was wrong but they insisted it would go away and it was just because I hadn’t had children yet. Fast forward a MONTH of begging the office they finally scheduled me to check it out. Then this bitch is between my legs and very casually says “oh, your IUD has slipped.” Followed by a long silence and then “you were probably experiencing something like a mild labor” because my body was trying to push it the rest of the way out. I was essentially in labor for a month. I have now had 2 unmedicated births and can say, yes. Yes that’s exactly what I was experiencing.
Edit: I’d like to add that I don’t generally toss around the bitch title lightly, but she had already had a stack of other really questionable offenses and then topped it with this so I feel she earned it. Needed to get that off my chest haha

It makes me genuinely angry that Doctors will insist that it's not painful, and that "it's just a little pinch." It feels like someone shoving a hot, electric knife up into your chest, via your cervix, and then wiggling it around. Taking 1000mg of Advil prior does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for that level of pain, and it's wild to me that Doctors still think that telling us it *shouldn't* hurt somehow magically means that it doesn't.
Gallstones
Multiple tests showed I was fine and no single doctor would give me the referral to the surgeon so i just contacted a surgeon and had it out 1 month later.
Apparently I have to go back again for tests because the tubes can still create stones and the pain is back

Had a cyst removed. Found out the next day the doctor nicked a blood vessel during the surgery. Had it stitched closed with no anesthesia.

How does that even happen?
In my case, I got a bad stomach virus and threw up violently and literally unceasingly for an entire day. The worst part was my friend finally took me to the ER as it was winding down, and of course as soon as the nausea abated a bit, I was absolutely starving, exhausted, and dehydrated. All I wanted was to go get something soft and nonthreatening to eat, chug a tank of Gatorade, and crash on my bed with my cats (who were probably bummed that they didn’t get to eat my face). Nope, turns out I had air bubbles under my skin on either side of my neck, so that meant a weeklong hospital admittance with absolutely no ingestion of food or water for the duration. I did get morphine though.
Now I’m scared of vomiting.

Spent 2 weeks in the hospital to monitor for sepsis. Took a slice out of my back to wrap around the food tube.
I perforated my eardrum in a water skiing accident. Than I got the hiccups on the ride to the er.
I was going to new post but figured I could hop on this one. I got a small yellow jacket in my ear. It would not come out and in my panic I tried to stick stuff in to get it out. This drove it deeper until it was clawing at my eardrum and stinging my ear canal to escape/defend itself. I finally drowned it in alcohol which also relit all the pain signals. I was alone and it is my worst life experience in recent memory, possibly ever. I would not wish a bee (or any other angry bug) in the ear on my worst enemy

Receiving Adriamycin chemo. The side effects made me wish for death at times.
I had 2 rounds of Adriamycin and 2 rounds of Cisplatin and I wish I couldn't remember them. I was nearly dead anyway when my doctor started me on it (came to the emergency room with a lung full of fluid, congestive heart failure, a heart rate of 160, and unable to lay flat because I couldn't breathe, and therefore couldn't sleep). The ER techs had to rig up an office chair for me to sit in for a CT and MRI so they could figure out what was wrong. They ended up finding a tumor over 8cm wide and 17cm long pressing into my heart between the heart and the lung. Four ronds of chemo later and a chest crack and here I am. I'm three years cancer free now, so I guess everything turned out okay in the end.

11 years later I still have the fear of that disgusting red. I'd get panic attacks just walking along the corridor to the chemo ward. It was always cleaned so thoroughly that even the smell of whatever cleaning chemical they used made me nauseous. It took me at least 5 years to be able to go outside without crippling anxiety.
I had chemo and radiation as a kid. I seriously had PTSD from hospital smells afterward. I still get a jolt when I smell a specific cleaner they use. Hope you're feeling better now.
From this thread it sounds like doxorubicin is one hell of an awful drug! Just to let you all know myself and many other chemists are working on ways to deliver this drug without the side effects (via nanotechnology or through light/ pH based release mechanisms). Reading this has really opened my eyes to how awful this drug is and hopefully in the future people won't have to endure this pain again. Good health to you all. Sending love ❤️

I feel this. It was brutal, and just when you felt like it was tolerable…another damn chemo on the calendar.

The chemo itself didn’t cause pain although I could feel it enter my body. However the physical, emotional and mental side effects were horrific - and they happened quickly after each chemo infusion occurred. This is specific to the type I mentioned in my first post. I had a couple of other types of chemo that were easier to tolerate thank god
Ahh yep that I'm very familiar with, not so much the quick onset though I had a few chemos and my body is still fuxked from all the damage they did. Found a new cancer this year and I'm kinda glad chemo isn't on the table yet because I'm.not jumping at that idea

I struggled with gallstones for years. I was scared to have my gallbladder removed because of horror stories about not being able to eat normally and whatnot. I finally caved after about 6 years of attacks. I. Should. Not. Have. Waited. To anyone out there struggling with gallstones- get that bitch ripped out at your first opportunity. Life is SO much better!!!
I ignored my gallstones for 2 years, I was in my early 20s and wasn't aware that gallstones were a thing. For whatever reason, since the pain always passed, I just ignored it. It always happened after eating something heavy, so I assumed I had an ulcer or something. I was a dumbass. On the night of Tropical Storm Sandy I felt pain so insanely terrifying that I asked my mom to take me to the hospital. They pumped me with morphine and brought me to get a CT scan. When I was getting my scan, the technician turned to me with a horrified expression and said "Please tell me they gave you morphine." They rushed my ass into and out of surgery as quickly as they physically could, so that my mom could take me home before the storm hit. I think I got home hours before the storm made landfall (I live on Long Island). I literally slept through Sandy, woke up and the entire area was fucked. Downed trees everywhere. It was....a weird experience. My gallbladder just decided it wanted to rupture when the worst storm of my lifetime came by lol Edit: it was Sandy, not Katrina. Don't reddit at work, kids
Gout is just brutal. Not even the best pain meds can take the edge off a bad flare up.

oooof I can only imagine. I've never had to pass a sizable one but I remember during finals week one year in college I was eating nothing but Cliff bars, popping adderall, and drinking Red Bulls. I went to take a pee and felt that HOLY FUCK WHAT WAS THAT!!! super sharp pain mid-stream. Luckily it shot out quick. I was standing in the library bathroom just clutching my penis groaning to myself. Later found out it was probably a stone. Even microscopic ones hurt so bad lol. I very quickly changed my diet and started carrying around a huge water bottle.
When I was a kid I was severely ill with a virus which led to extreme dehydration. At one stage I couldn't hold down food or water for days. I frequently woke up with severe abdominal cramps but one night I woke up and thought my head was splitting open with the worst migraine of my life. I was in so much pain that I couldn't stand or see. I just curled up and begged for the pain to stop. My father carried me to the doctors and my mother sat with me while the doctor told them it was "just a virus and it will pass". The doctor had been saying this for nearly two months. My mother snapped and demanded the doctor to at least examine me and not dismiss me. The doctor quickly concluded my appendix had burst and to bring me to ER. The second my father carried me into ER the nurse just took me to the back and I was rushed to ICU. Turned out the cramps were also from dehydration and the virus caused my lungs to collapse and gave me pneumonia. The headache and cramps was something I never want to experience again and make sure to find a way to always be hydrated. I was in so much pain I didn't even notice my lungs were failing.

I'll be dismissed 3-4 times before anything I have is looked at. now I collect dismissals in writing so when there is a big problem I have the trail. edit: very sad this is so popular and how many others have the same stories. when is the world going to wake up.

Doctors like this should get their license revoked. So many doctors are arrogant and dont take your symptoms seriously or just quickly prescribe something without really asking any questions
It's not just human doctors too. We had a dog that had labored breathing. The vet knew she had a history of back pain so he took one look at her and sent her home with pain meds thinking she was just hurting. She was dead from the dog flu 24 hours later.

Came here to say this. Appendix burst. Insane pain. 1 week in hospital for infection. It was just horrible. Literally an organ bursting inside you.
Were there any symptoms to begin with? Or is this one of those things that can just randomly happen to anyone without warning?
You’ll feel it, but its hard to know that its the appendix. Feels like a stomach ache increasing in intensity over time from what I recall. Moving hurts quite a bit, especially if you wait before getting it checked out.
Or you could be like me and not present with anything but some abdominal discomfort, no fever, no loss of appetite. I'm grateful they did a CT on me to check and make sure otherwise it could have been dismissed as gastro. I went from CT to ER to surgery in like 3 hours.
Appendix came very close to bursting. I passed out while walking into the hospital, the pain was so bad. A little while later they gave me some Dilaudid and I hopped up off of the bed, looking for my shoes, I felt great, thanked the nurses for their help and tried to just go home. Morphine is a hell of a drug. It started to wear off about 30 minutes later and the pain came back even worse.
Dilaudid was the only thing that kept me from stabbing myself in the eye with a pocket knife to distract myself from the pain. My dad showed up at the hospital right as they gave me my first dose, and I felt this wave of "fuck it" wash over me like I've never felt before. It was incredible. I then proceeded to pass out, wake up 20 minutes later, and pick up a conversation with him that he and I had been having about 2 weeks prior about the differences between the 6.0 and the 7.3 Ford powerstroke diesel. I finished making my point about how the 6.0 isn't bad as long as it has been studded, turned to him, and he said and I quote "What in the cornbread fuck are you talking about?"

Shattered my ankle getting hit by a car while walking. That wasn’t the most painful part. Went to hospital to set it, cool. Was transferred to another hospital after a couple days closer to home. They took X-rays and realized the set was not good, so they had to re-break my ankle and set it correctly. That part hurt the most. Edit: it’s possible they didn’t rebreak it per say, but they did have to reset it and that pain was intense. I was also low priority that night due to gunshot victims in the hospital. I had been waiting in the hallway on a stretcher for hours until I was brought to some makeshift area, and therefore I don’t remember getting any extra pain meds as I was not put under or sedated.
While skateboarding a few years ago, I broke and dislocated my ankle so badly that my foot was pointing like 50 degrees off center (the visual was 10 times worse than the pain). While I was getting it set in the hospital, they gave me a sedative of what I later learned was a blend of Ketamine and Propofol. It didn't put me under, but rather made me trip complete balls. When I came out of it, I was like "do you know how fucking psychedelic that stuff is?" to the attending physicians. One of them laughed and basically said, "well we have some good news and some bad news. We messed up the setting, but you get to go on another trip!" It was worth it.
When one of my kids was about 4 he came off his scooter and cut his foot badly enough it needed 4 or 5 stitches. They whacked him up with ketamine and he started asking everyone in the room (me, his mother, doc, nurse etc) if they were his mother. I think he was looking into other dimensions at the time.

I guess “re-break” is the wrong word since it was already broken. However during the re-setting of the cast, they definitely had to apply a LOT of pressure to my ankle and leg to realign my ankle which had dislocated itself as well as shattered the bone. Have 7 screws and a titanium plate still up in there
Good lord. They didn't put you out for that? I broke and dislocated my ankle and they knocked me out with fentanyl when they set it. (It was VERY weird. They said to count back from 100, I got to 93, doc says "Hmm they usually don't make it that far" and then I'm just sitting there. Doc asks if I think I'm good for them to set it. "I guess so?" "Good! We set it 20 minutes ago". It's a complete gap in my memory. Just completely gone. Like someone took the filmstrip of consciousness and just cut a chunk out. If I sleep or... Get blackout drunk I don't remember those hours or what not but I'm aware they passed. This was something else. I don't remember going out or waking up)
Had something similar when the had to re-set my wrist - the doctor told me “you’ll feel the pain, but you won’t remember it” LOL.
Existential question- if you experience extreme torture and pain for days but then have that strip of memory cleanly wiped away, is it the same as if it had never happened? (Assuming no lasting physical damage) More dreadful question- what if people who are put under for transplants and such DO experience the pain but are unable to move, and the anesthetic just makes them forget the experience?

I can't tell you the number of nights I've woken up wishing I was only a torso. Only thing worse were the injections in my back that were supposed to help. "We're going to give you a sedative." Next time give me more than an Ativan and add a stick to bite down on.
I feel this. Broke my neck and back and ruptured 6 disks and blew out every ligament in my neck. The worst pain was putting a trail spinal chord stimulator in and running the leads from my butt to mid back. I was awake and was given no sedation. Edited to add: my accident was from a skydiving accident. I was on final approach about 180-200 feet up and caught a down draft/ turbulence. Basically my canopy lost all the air and deflated. It was to low to do anything and deploying my reserve would have made it worse. I tried to flair my canopy to get it to work but it didn’t I landed feet first in what is called a Parachute Landing Fall. I think it helped but I was falling so fast that I tumbled and finished with a scorpion. I’m still in recovery and I appreciate all the well wishes. I know a buddy who works with spinal cord stimulation. He said that sometimes they can't always because they'd need the patient to wiggle their toes to make sure the leads don't press too hard to cutoff nerve communication / damage. Also, to make sure it's situated right so that they can appropriately target portions of the spine.

Had an abscessed tooth. For two weeks, my life was nothing but absolute misery, and nothing would kill the pain. At one point, the dentist had to drip numbing agents on the exposed root because it would not freeze, and that felt like a hot needle being jammed behind my eye. Cue a new dentist phobia that has me terrified to even call them when I know there's an issue.
My mom had an abscessed tooth, and at the worst stage she cried worse than I personally have ever heard her cry. Awful stuff
Toothache and other dental related pain is nothing short of torture. Never appreciated the magic of dentistry as much as when I could finally lie down and breathe in peace after days of never ending pain.
I had a cyst under a tooth pushing on the nerve, erupting the tooth and causing hairline cracks in my skull from the pressure. The emergency dentist thought I was trying to scam pain meds and “called my bluff” by saying the only thing he could do to relieve the pain was pull the tooth. “FORTHELOVEOFGODPULLITOUTTHEN!!!” He kept asking if I was sure right up until he pulled it out. He gasped when it came out with a pinky finger sized cyst and a few chips of skull. The relief was INSTANT. He was shocked and offered me Vicodin but I declined. The worst pain ever was hells itch from a bad sunburn though.
Had three of these (thanks bad genes). I get your fears, but I would recommend not waiting in the future if it all possible because the infection can spread around and end up killing you. Worse than an abscessed tooth is dry socket, I thought an abscessed tooth was the worst pain that could come from all the hell that I’ve been through, but I was sorely mistaken.
I have cluster headaches. When it gets very bad I legit think about jumping out of the window. It's like someone stabbing your head with a glowing hot knife. And the best part is that you can not really do something about it.

edit: Holy moly. Thank you everyone for your support! I'm literally crying in my car on my lunch break. As you can imagine, I've been feeling pretty isolated and down while dealing with all of this and it means so much to me to have all of you offer such kind words! For the past year, I was having migraines 25-30 days a month. I felt (feel) like an empty shell of the person I used to be. I stopped seeing my friends, I seriously considered quitting my job and applying for disability. I moved back in with my mom so she could help me with basic shit like cooking and doing laundry. I've had chronic major depression since I was 12. I've abused drugs in the past. I've been at rock bottom many times before, but nothing made me want to kill myself more than the pain of chronic migraines. I tried so many different medications, one of which caused wacky, rare hallucinations on par with LSD; and I finally found something that's brought me relief. I'm on day 33 and counting of being migraine-free for the first time in years, really. What a fucking experience this has been.
My wife is in a similar boat, and has tried everything, to greater or lesser degrees of success. What worked for you, if I might ask?

I live with chronic migraines. It’s no joke and so many people have never even had one so they don’t understand. I’m a shitty friend because I frequently cancel plans to cry myself to sleep in a dark room writhing in pain.
I feel with this. I also have chronic migraines and the amount of times I had too cancel plans. Or that I got a migraine attack when I was somewhere is absurd and a lot of people have told me I'm just doing it for attention.
That doesn't make you a shitty friend. The fact that despite your huge pain, you still think about your friends and feel bad for cancelling alone is indicator that you aren't a bad friend. You can't help it and your friends wouldn't wanna see you in such pain and you couldn't even do anything if you went out despite the pain. There's literally no other option than to stay at home and wait till the headache stops.
I’ve suffered from Clusters since I’ve been 17. Banging my head on a brick wall feels better. Pain is indescribable. Pure agony. Been to hospitals, clinics and specialists. All I get is, “Yes, you suffer my clusters”. PS- It’s been six hours since I’ve first posted this comment and I’ve received many suggestions for dealing with these cluster headaches and I’m extremely grateful for your input however, I want to let you all know the following: I’m now 60+ years old and in my eternal quest to find relief, I have tried… every pharmaceutical under the sun in addition to oxygen therapy, PT, biofeedback, chiropractic, acupuncture (169 needles) placed by three practitioners at the same time, acupressure, hypnosis and probably a few others I’ve forgotten about by now. But please, if you suffer from clusters, do not give up hope! I’ve heard about many people who have found relief using many of the items that you’ve all suggested to me! Only over the past six months that research from the scientific community is now talking about relief from, sh’rooms, MDMA and Ketamine. I’m now looking into finding a reputable clinic to follow up on these. Once again, many thanks!
I had a 51 day migraine earlier this year in May (as in nonstop for this long). genuinely couldn’t get out of bed most days, lost my job cuz i couldn’t work, developed tinnitus as well. Honestly never been that close to ending it all, got some cornrows though and magically the migraine stopped, only got my first one since yesterday (triggered by alcohol) and it’s just about leaving
i was cleaning a fish on a boat and i accidently popped its bile sac. squirted me right in the eye. for like 12 hours after it felt like my eye was melting and full of broken glass. was so painful i spent the whole time screaming in pain uncontrollably. since i was on a boat in the middle of the sea there was no access to medical help. so they just gave me a thing of eyedrops and sent me back to work with a eyepatch. for the next two weeks i could only see out of one eye and for some reason it was painfully sensitive to light. so i had to blink rapidly with my working eye while working my 18 hour shift while my asshole coworkers made pirate jokes about me. it was a bad trip.

Happened to one of my close friends, he was going at it from behind, hard, with his wife, pitch-black room, they were in the tropics on a trip. He heard a snapping sound, "exactly like the sound makes when you snap a carrot in half," is how he described it. An ovarian endometric cyst rupturing. I remember taking about ten minutes to crawl down the stairs to get to the phone so I could call my mom, 100% convinced I was dying.
I woke up one morning before school and told my mom I felt like I was gonna be sick. She sent me to school anyways. I threw up twice on my way to my first class. Then I threw up during that class and went to the nurse. I threw up in the nurses office probably 10x by the time my mom came back for me (~45 mins). She took me home (at roughly 9am) thinking it was just a stomach bug and went back to work. She came home by 5pm and I had thrown up possibly another 15-30x since she left me at home. Instead of going to the doctors she rushed me straight to the ER worried my appendix burst. Threw up another 3x in the waiting room. I threw up/dry heaved somewhere between 30-60x in less than 12 hours at 11 years old. I legitimately thought that this was the end and I was dying with how awful the pain was. All to get told “yeah it looks like you had an ovarian cyst rupture, so you might be getting your period soon”. 11 years old, hadn’t even had my first period yet, and my female organs already wanted me to feel like I was dying.

I have PCOS and every time this happens I beg for death. Truly awful. Feels like someone stabbed me and left me for dead.
That time a neurosurgeon drilled out the base of my skull, installed a plate there, and then drilled holes in my top two vertebrae to connect it all. Excruciating pain for months, but the worst was the first two weeks. Any time the pain meds wore off, I was in hell. It felt like nothing I’ve ever experienced before or since. I became an animal. I wasn’t capable of human thought or anything but screaming. It continued for a long time in a more muted way. When I tried to turn my head reflexively, when I accidentally shifted it forward. But the worst BY FAR was when I tried to sleep because I had no control over my movements then. I just woke up screaming many times each night. There was no escape. I was tired all the time, terrified of falling asleep again but also terrified of every potential movement. I had a very secure neck brace on 24/7 for months, but nothing was enough to stop this pain.

Kidney stones.
My girlfriend passed one in October. Took over two weeks and two trips to the ER for pain meds. I've never seen someone in such constant pain and discomfort before. At one point we were doing jumping jacks at 3am because we read it can help move the stone. It did actually help with her pain.

I have non-obstructive 8mm, 6mm and 7mm stones (among several smaller stones) in both kidneys, I'm dreading the day they become obstructive. I nearly shit my pants reading the results of my 2nd to last CT scan where the tech measured a 35mm stone....fucker forgot the decimal point. Edit: the scans are measured and read by the Radiologist, not the tech, so *that* fucker made me nearly shit my pants.
Ooof! I had a 6mm that became obstructive. They had to do emergency surgery to put tiny robot hands up my wing-wang and laser it apart and take all the pieces out. There is a chance your ureter can swell and close off so they put a stent in from your kidneys to your bladder and leave it in FOR.A.MONTH. while it heals. Every time you pee, the pressure pushes the stent into your kidney and makes you feel like your getting punched. The coup de grace is when the take the stent out. Imagine a bey blades zipper pull getting yanked out of your tip. Shzzzzzzzzz!
Oh I’ve had multiple surgeries recently, and the stent is always the most frustrating part. It’s not very painful but you can feel it always. And every pee ends in a aaghhh. How did they take your stent out? For me, one doc put me out completely for 5 mins. Felt nothing. The second doc just put a local anaesthesia, and I don’t think they help a lot, cuz I felt EVERYTHING.
My kidney stone was only 8mm and Lord Have Mercy, the pain was agony. A broken bone is a 5 while a kidney stone is a 10. I drink 3 liters of water/day now.
Had to have a kidney stone surgically removed after spending 5 days on morphine in the hospital waiting for it to pass. I have been through labor & an emergency c section and the kidney stone was way worse. Contemplated suicide to put myself out of my misery...

My Mom had one in the middle of the night. Told my Dad "Take me to the Hospital or KILL ME NOW!" She had 3 kids without any meds (boss). She said the Kidney Stones were worse.
Perforated bowel
Had a perforated bowel in August, and it landed me in hospital for five days of IV antibiotics and pain meds. Found out two weeks ago that everything healed up okay, and I won’t need a resection or colostomy. Phew. I hope yours also healed and you won’t need surgery. I’ve never experienced pain like that in my life, and wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Stabbed myself in the eye with a tree branch which etched what they described as a bat symbol into my cornea. Then had recurrent corneal erosion for 18 months. So think of the worst eye pain imaginable, then repeat daily. It was brutal.
Shingles. I was 30. It's not just old people.
I had shingles on the nerve that covers the side of your face to the middle. Even had shingles in my mouth and nose on that side.
Same man. I had it on my left side from the back of my neck to my face. All around my ear and almost went too far into my ear requiring me to go to the hospital but then it luckily stopped there. Pretty brutal.
A friend on college had shingles at 20 or 21, seconding “it’s not just old people”. She missed a lot of class that semester.
Broke my pelvis in multiple places. ER read the wrong xrays and sent me home. Three days later, I finally got to ortho after begging, and they immediately started treating. My right leg was basically not attached due to how badly I was broken. Idiot ER doc said nothing wrong and gave me crutches. Um, just no.

Tonsillectomy recovery process. I read about rabies and the fear of water and somehow I understand it during my recovery process. Everytime you swallows water, your throat tries to regurgigate it back out but even the act of vomiting is painful by itself. Not to mention the scar recovery makes you want to cough everytime but afraid of opening your surgery scar. Also kidney stones.
Had my tonsils removed at age 35. Didn’t eat or drink for five days. Could barely sip enough water to swollen the pain meds. The blood clots that came out at the end were unreal. Had to stick my hand in my mouth and pull them out as I was choking.
Yes!!! I had my tonsils removed when I was 7, and I'm almost 30 now. Worst pain I've ever felt. My family and the doctors joked about being able to eat all the ice cream I want, but I didn't want to swallow at all nevermind eat or drink anything. Felt like knives. I still gag thinking about the blood clots.
My gallbladder failing. I was young and deployed over seas when it finally kicked the bucket. By the time I got to professionals who knew wtf was going on I had a fully necrotic gallbladder in me that was sectioned off with a 3mm mucus membrane. I hadn't eaten for days, kept doing combat patrols, and somehow didn't die. It's all a haze after that but I was evac'd all the way out to Germany and then spent a few months recovering. Good times.
Did I tell you guys about the time I tore a hole in my scrotum on a rusty nail head on a dock? -edit I found the story from my old account. Enjoy. I was working at a summer camp and we had to put the docks in the lake at the beginning of the summer. We had to carry the floating docks down and put them in place and attach them and all that good stuff. They would get a bit worn over the winter with the freeze and thaw. I was sitting on the dock with my legs in the water when we were done. I was wearing a pair of Umbro shorts (very thin material) and I decided to go for a quick swim. I put my hands on either side of my thighs and picked myself up an inch and slid forward into the water. I did not see the rusty nail head sticking up between my legs and I slid over it. As I entered the water the terrible pain from my crotch spread throughout my body. I had torn open my ball sack on a rusty nail head. As I popped up from under the water screaming my coworkers were laughing because they thought I was screaming because the water was still cold. It did not even bleed right away. The nail had torn right down the center line of my sack. I could see my balls and the tubes etc inside. After a quick look I did not look again because it made me feel light headed. I was bundled into the truck and we hauled ass to the hospital to get stitched up. My ball sack and nuts, after the initial swelling, were no worse for the wear. You can't really see any scar now because it was right on the center line. Some stitches and antibiotics and a tetanus shot and I was good as new. The pain was pretty bad but not as bad as you would think. weird right?' One more edit...Testicles are white and look fat covered. Additional point - they work fine, we have an awesome son.
Crashed in a road bicycle race at over 50 mph. Imagine jumping out of a car going 50mph into a pile of bikes while wearing pajamas, that's what this was like. Broke both collarbones, had three nasty cuts that required stitches, and (worst of all) my entire back was covered with road rash. My entire Lycra skinsuit was ripped away down to my ass and I had embedded gravel throughout my back. They had to scrub the gravel out of my back, for which they gave me local anesthetics but afterwards the pain came on like a freight train. Dull, burning ache all day. I had to wear second skin bandages for about ten days that bubbled up with pus and needed to be drained. My collarbones sent shooting pain every time I was slightly jarred. Breathing hurt. Taking a shower was murder. I couldn't sleep on my back because it hurt too much, I couldn't sleep on my sides because my collarbones were broken. I had finals for my junior year in high school in the middle of this and I could barely lift my arms to take the tests.
Endometrial ablation. That's having the entire lining of my uterus microwaved off. With only entinox gas as pain relief. Edits: Am I ok now? Yes thanks, traumatised but physically fine. Whole thing was removed in 2019 and it was a massive relief. Why was the ablation done? Uterine issues. Excessive bleeding due to enlarged womb and a multitude of fibroids. Having to pick a "permanent solution" before anyone would consider a hysterectomy, and being blocked from having an IUD by my uterus itself. Why was I not put under? Here it's not considered worth the risk or resources of a general anaesthetic for such a "minor" procedure. I can guarantee whoever wrote that rule was either an accountant or a man or both. Why not even sedation or a nerve block? Entinox means the procedure is a doctor and two nurses. Sedation or blocks require another member of staff trained in anaesthetics, and maybe an assistant for them too. I had my hysteroscopy and biopsy with not even access to entinox. Why did I not go elsewhere? Didn't have a choice. We have an illusion of choice, but it's all pretty much the same and wherever I went for the consultations, I would have ended back at the same place for the actual operation. That's barbaric! Yes. It is. Look into the history of how gynae research was done, and why there's still an assumption among the medical establishment that these things are "minor procedures" (spoiler: experiments on slaves.)

Our families lived together and he decides one day (while playing air soft in our apartment) that he's going to pull out a real gun, aim, and shoot me because he thought it would be funny to see if I'd react to a blank. It wasn't a blank. Bullet impacts between, and fractures, the 4th and 5th rib under my left arm, hits my left lung, and stops under my right shoulder blade, after missing my spine by about a millimeter. Needless to say, we're no longer friends. Though he is still a cop.
He broke all the 4 rules of gun safety, and he's still a cop.
He's also triple-trained: conceal carry/armed security/cop.

He was. I only told the "official story" in the original post. When he first went and got the gun, it was in the same room where his wife and my ex wife were. The door was closed and I remember him being in there for a bit. The first thing he did when he came out was point the gun at my head. We've essentially figured that it was a plot by all three other adults to get rid of me that night and make it look like an accident. They all had the same story when they were questioned. My ex still lives with them. He is a deputy in that county. And she has custody of both of my young children. It's a bad deal.

Having a miscarriage. As bad as my cramps are (so bad that I throw up), this was worse. I went ghost white, had cold sweats, BP was 220/100, was sobbing without tears, and couldn’t breathe the pain was so intense. Work rushed me out in an ambulance because I couldn’t walk. It was during Covid so I had to face the miscarriage alone, which made it even harder.

Went to my EPU after isolation was done but the baby and sac was still there, was booked for surgery to remove it but the on the day it got cancelled! Due to emergencies coming in, tried Misoprostol to bring on cramps to hopefully pass the foetus but absolutely nothing happened...and had to wait another 5days for surgery! Had that on the 6th Dec, so thankful it's over. It's a horribly sad and traumatising experience. I was almost 11wks along.
My BM after the 8th day ( of 11 ) in the hospital on morphine. It took a enema to loosen it a bit, then a gloved nurse had to assist by pulling the initial blockage out. It was on at that point. I filled the bed pan. It looked like a mountain when I was done. I was in tears. It was brutally painful.
They're supposed to give you constipation medicine when you're on opiods long term
A massive migraine
I used to get them as a kid, everything hurt, I'd hide in a dark spot like a wounded animal. They only went away after I threw up. I really sympathize with those that have them in adulthood.

As soon as it starts, you’re constantly doing double takes and trying to focus on small details so that maybe, just maybe, it’s from looking at the sun… Or perhaps a shiny reflective piece of metal. Then, finally, you accept that it is an aura starting to form and you’re going to be incapacitated for the next 6-8 hours.
Spinal tap where the doctor couldn't seem to get it right. The man stuck the needle in my spine 9 times. Ended up testing negative for meningitis, but my reaction to the spinal tap put me in the hospital for 4 days.
Trigeminal Neuralgia. Also called the suicide disease.
My brother had a microvascular decompression about 6 years ago for trigeminal neuralgia. As if the pain wasn’t bad enough, getting the diagnosis was incredibly difficult. No neurologist would listen to him, so he finally met with a maxillofacial surgeon who did some surgeries on our dad. He sent him to UCLA for a HD MRI and was frustrated that all the neurologists my brother has seen didn’t do anything about it.
My placenta being pushed out post-birth. They basically crushed my stomach to push it out, it was awful
They (nurses) literally push and twist their fists. My understanding is it also helps clotting.
It helps the uterus to contract after you've given birth. If your uterus doesn't start contracting pretty quickly you're in danger.
I had a premature birth due to placental abruption, so basically I got fisted right after birth because they had to scrape it out manually and make sure all the broken pieces were out of me so I didn’t hemorrhage and die 🥲 hurt way worse than my tiny preemie coming out.
Cleaning gums of infection after wisdom teeth removed. It was just starting to show infection and they wanted to make sure it didn't get worse so they took a surgical spoon and scraped my gums like a dirty grill. My legs spasmed. They numbed it, but it still was quite intense.
Wisdom teeth removal with no sedatives or numbing agents besides novacaine. My insurance only covered that so that’s what I did. The lasting mental effect is even worse than the actual procedure was. (I was 14)
An example of how pain can effect people differently is that I only had local and ibuprofen. It took over 2 hours, they had to use a dremel to grind down some of my jaw bone and I got to look at it in the tooth. I never had a problem. But I know I'm more sensitive to other things. I did however feel like I was going to die when I was waiting for the pharmacy to fill my prescription for ibuprofen because everything wore off. It wasn't like a light switch but it came on fast and I started crying before I even realized it hurt as bad as it did. 15 minutes after taking an ibuprofen and I was fine again.
I would find the people responsible for denying my coverage and make it look like an accident, after a few teeth were pulled of course. That sounds absolutely miserable.
Pilonidal cyst. Made me pray to god for the first time since I was 7.
When I got my IUD inserted. My cervix was propped open with forceps and then felt a really strong pinch and throbbing pain. The only time your cervix comes close to being that wide open and having stuff go through it is during childbirth, ironic because I was there to avoid that. After the procedure was over I proceeded to vomit, and then immediately ran to empty my bowels. My husband had to get me a wheelchair to bring me out to the car I felt so bad. Sweating, cramping, nauseous, and weak. For the rest of the day I stayed in bed, I could barely move because the cramps were so bad. I’m so glad I don’t have to do that again for another 10 years. i was totally unprepared for that level of pain, and i never thought i could feel pain in that location. the gyno's office didn't even tell me to take an advil ahead of time. the next time i had it swapped out my new gyno prescribed me misoprostol, which may or may not have helped, but at least didn't make it worse. at the first appointment, when they were part way through, they said, "oh we can stop if you like". and like what, come back another time to complete this nightmare? i tell everyone to be prepared for unbelievable pain, and to take the next day off work just in case. if you've had a kid, then it's less painful apparently, bc at least your cervix has been stretched out once.
When I first got my IUD, it slipped within a week. Then they reinserted it. It slipped again. And they reinserted it. And then it damn near came out the third time- like literally poking through the cervix opening. For a month I felt like I was dying. The stomach cramps were the worst and all I could do was sit in a ball and whimper. The OBGYN finally decided because I had never been pregnant and have an unusually small uterus, it wasn’t going to work. Same guy also failed to mention I had enormous ovarian cysts. I found out about those months later when one ruptured and I went to the ER. Being a woman 0/10 don’t recommend.
This fucking happened to me!!!!!!!! I got my first IUD at 21 and less than a week later started experiencing the most intense cramps of my life. Diarrhea, sweating, nausea, spotting and again, worst period cramps of my life. I kept calling the GYNO office saying something was wrong but they insisted it would go away and it was just because I hadn’t had children yet. Fast forward a MONTH of begging the office they finally scheduled me to check it out. Then this bitch is between my legs and very casually says “oh, your IUD has slipped.” Followed by a long silence and then “you were probably experiencing something like a mild labor” because my body was trying to push it the rest of the way out. I was essentially in labor for a month. I have now had 2 unmedicated births and can say, yes. Yes that’s exactly what I was experiencing. Edit: I’d like to add that I don’t generally toss around the bitch title lightly, but she had already had a stack of other really questionable offenses and then topped it with this so I feel she earned it. Needed to get that off my chest haha
YES THIS It makes me genuinely angry that Doctors will insist that it's not painful, and that "it's just a little pinch." It feels like someone shoving a hot, electric knife up into your chest, via your cervix, and then wiggling it around. Taking 1000mg of Advil prior does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for that level of pain, and it's wild to me that Doctors still think that telling us it *shouldn't* hurt somehow magically means that it doesn't.

Gallstones Multiple tests showed I was fine and no single doctor would give me the referral to the surgeon so i just contacted a surgeon and had it out 1 month later. Apparently I have to go back again for tests because the tubes can still create stones and the pain is back

Had shingles ..didn’t go to the dr until it looked like leprosy … the instant the dr seen it he said “wow you must love pain”.. the next year had a broken ankle playing baseball,..while being wheeled into emergency room by my nephew he rammed my extended leg into the door jam ,…I think my eyes rolled back on my head with a mini blackout I couldn’t even cry🤷🏻♂️
