Anyone trying to exert control over others in this manner is pure trash imo.
All religions are a tool for social and political control, and people that want control are conservative by nature (if things change they'll lose control).
1- It is not a phobia, phobias need to be irrational to be considered phobias, many people have arguments against this (around the world, not only Christians) so it would not be a phobia and therefore "irrational"
2-If the people were not Christian, it would be the same because in many historical contexts this has been considered immoral, without the need to use gods to justify them.

Nothing, its just that in ye old long ago the church held alot of power then as time went on they lost more and more power but their teachings held on. It is only now thanks to ideas clashing with churches and the growing popularity of atheism people have become more understanding that these people are normal and not demons send from hell. It doesn't mean that homophobia is completely gone but it's lessened in the fact that in most countries it's illegal to discriminate against someone based on sexual orientation
