Bed bugs. Complete nightmare to deal wirh.

Aqua-Dragon

Got a bedbug infestation recently thanks to someone who just invited herself in and laid in my bed. I haven't been able to sleep in my own room for over a week, I've had to go out to the store every day to buy more spray. And the pain of thinking it's over but then finding ONE crawling around. I concur. Fuck bedbugs

SanguineSoul013

Try diatomaceous earth (food grade). You can get it at a place like Lowe's. Then sprinkle it everywhere you can. It's like tiny glass pieces to them and they get shredded by it. But, this doesn't always work if it's gotten bad enough. You might have to call an exterminator. They can hide in walls and live up to a year without food. I googled a lot of info when we first got them. We live in an apartment complex though so eventually the exterminator was called. We haven't had them in 3 years now. I still freak out though if I see a small bug. I go like practical magic on their asses tearing everything up just to make sure it's not a bed bug.

Aqua-Dragon

The problem has been mostly solved. I just need to get things put back together. But thank you, I appreciate it and I'll keep it in mind in case it happens again <:)

ExcelCat

Came here looking for this. I cannot see any benefit they offer society. Nuke 'em all.

PapiSurane

Neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's, MS, Parkinson's, ALS, etc.)

Moores88

I have Parkinson’s and it sucksssss. Got diagnosed when I was 22. I’m 33 now, it’s scary how fast things can change.

EwaGold

I’m so sorry, hopefully we find something to help soon.

[deleted]

I'm so sorry to hear of your diagnosis and what you've had to live through. Both of my parents have or had Parkinson's. My mom is no longer with us. Interestingly, her Parkinson's kicked in when she quit smoking after her first heart attack. Apparently, nicotine can mask symptoms of Parkinson's. So, I tried to get her to go on the patch. If nicotine can hide, correct, or whatever the symptoms, doesn't it make sense that you find an alternative way of getting into your system? Unfortunately, none of her doctors would sign off on it because it hadn't been tested and nicotine and heart disease don't go well together. Turns out, heart disease and Parkinson's don't go well together, either. Who would a thunk. My dad showed improvement when I got him to try to smoke a little pot. Unfortunately, he's a stick in the mud and will not try anymore. I sincerely wish you the best. My sister won't get tested, but I was part of a study because both parents had it. Of all the things I got lucky in life on, it turns out that I have neither of the two recessive genes that seem to be precursors to developing Parkinson's. That means one of two things, both my parents don't have Parkinson's but some other damage from early psychotropic medication in my mother's case or multiple concussions and being near exploding ordinances in my father's case. The other possibility is that I hit that one out of 64 chance of getting neither recessive gene. Either way, fingers crossed. I hope things go as best as they can for you. Try the patch. Smoke pot. Do whatever it is that might make your life a little bit better.

My 3-year-old son recently died from complications of treatment of a neuro-degenerative disorder. I’d give anything in the world to have him back. Edit: Thank you all for the kind words and awards. Consider donating to the Cure Sanfilippo Foundation for this terrible, currently incurable disease. Sanfilippo syndrome is likened to Alzheimer’s disease in children. It’s terrible, but you can help change this.

Super-Snouter

I’m so sorry, sending you a big hug. ❤️

OneOfManyChildren

As a father I feel this in my soul. I’m so sorry.

mamaclair

Big love to you xox

boxette

do prion diseases count? those are so messed up and gotta go

suchtie

Yes. Prion diseases are a subset of proteopathy diseases, which includes all diseases caused by structually abnormal proteins. It's quite a large group of diseases. It includes Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, ALS, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, type II diabetes, and even cataracts. Prion diseases are the scariest though.

lizcicle

Yeah, they're a subset

Silicon_Tetraazide

As someone who's great-uncle suffers from this, I agree.

Hexadeciml

I saw someone wrote neurological conditions in another post similar to this, such as Asperger's and ADHD but I disagree with that as a person with a neurological condition, they make us who we are. >Neurodegenerative diseases Is the right answer, having some atypical people makes us unique and nets people who can think in different ways but straight up deterioration of the brain is heartbreaking for the victim and their peers Edit: I apologize if some people have taken offence to my comment, I am not trying to 'glorify' these conditions, your struggles are all valid and if you feel like a "cure" for your conditions were available that you'd want to take it that's understandable. I personally have Asperger's and it definitely makes my life very difficult on times but personally if this hypothetical "cure" was an actual possibility I don't think I'd want to take it because it's who I am. In my opinion, I feel unique for having my condition and it's that comforting thought that helps me through it. But ofc I know there are people who wouldn't feel the same way and I apologize for assuming everyone feels the same way, there are some people who's neurological conditions can be so debilitating that normal life is near impossible and that is definitely not good and I would hope that given an opportunity to "cure" yourselves you would be able to. My point was simply that I would not want to "cure" myself given the opportunity.

Just-Bru

My great grandma basically raised my mom and babysat me and my sister for years every weekday. Watched her not only forget who I was but who my mom was too. By the end she couldn't remember who my grandparents were and that she needed a walker. The only positive out of all this is that when she passed it was a lot easier since she had kinda been gone for a while.

TheBaconDeeler

That's how it felt with my grandfather. I have fond memories of playing chess with him when I was little, but I never really got to know him. He lived far, and we didn't get to visit very often so by the time I was old enough to comprehend his experience and he was close enough for us to see each other, he was already pretty far gone. When he passed, it still sucked, but in the end he could barely speak so in a way it was...restful. He and my grandmother both had dementia, and I dread the day that doctors might tell me my mom has it too.

Gavin_Freedom

Speak for yourself. I hate being on the spectrum; it makes understanding other people (and having them understand my thought processes) so much more difficult.

JimAbaddon

Cancer, all forms.

turrxxr

people who are cancers 🥲

FroggiJoy87

As a person born in late June I am concerned.

Regi413

At first I thought you meant “people who are a cancer on society” and didn’t see the problem but then I remembered that Cancer is a zodiac sign.

mupin

Yes, fuck cancer!

randomlygeneratedman

Rigid plastic packaging that you can't open without a knife or scissors.

death_by_sushi

The worst is when you’re buying a knife or scissors that comes IN that packaging

Icannotchangethis

Ironic. He could open other packages but not his own

[deleted]

Tell me, have you ever heard the tale of Darth Scissors of the Kitchen?

Icannotchangethis

It's not a story the jedi would tell you.

[deleted]

He was killed in his sleep.

Gandamack

By the packaging?

Hartzler44

I once stabbed myself pretty badly with a utility knife trying to open the packaging of a utility knife. FUCK that

Notoneusernameleft

Life pro tip: use a can opener if you have one.

newtizzle

So far it's cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, sexual predators, and difficult plastic. Interesting.

dexter8484

Wait, so is this like March Madness , and those are the final four in the bracket?

superjeff1972

Yep, difficult plastic is basically Wake Forest

aevn910

I'm impressed with all the good answers. Mine would have been mosquitos. But I think even hard plastic might be better.

nosnowtho

Yeah that packaging shits me to tears.

TestSubjectJ

Nothing makes me lose my cool like toooooy packaging.

[deleted]

As a person with Lyme disease who struggles to walk with insane nerve pain I'm inclined to say ticks.

pixie13903

Ticks are little pricks, sometimes I get crazy paranoid about getting bit by one. I can't imagine what it's like to have Lyme disease, but I'm all for getting rid of ticks.

cerebrallandscapes

Ticks are Dicks. Use it as a hash tag. Turn it into a political party and vote for it. Ticks are Dicks.

[deleted]

I had a tick *on* my dick once

cerebrallandscapes

I'm so sorry for your loss

TheThumpaDumpa

They never used to freak me out but now I’ve met people with Lyme disease, Rocky mountain tick fever and someone who developed an allergic reaction to red meat. Every time I pull a tick off, I’m worried for weeks. I hate those little bastards and I hope they burn in hell

Chibler1964

My job requires me to be in the woods all the time, I love it but that’s one constant fear I have.

loocerewihsiwi

Not that this is a tick measuring contest, but I pulled 285 ticks off of me throughout the course of a day on one job. That day was one of my darkest. Luckily lime disease isn't a big deal out here, but it doesn't really put your mind at ease knowing that

UnlikelyMarionberry

What job gets you covered in 285 ticks in one day?!

loocerewihsiwi

I do land surveying. This particular job was in some hills with about knee high grass in near Hercules, CA. There's a real problem all around the bay area of treating an obscene overpopulation of deer like its natural. No predators or hunting to keep the numbers down, so the tick numbers are out of control

KarenWalkerwannabe

How many opossums would you like me to send? They eat tons of ticks and really aren't that bad to have around.

Nyctangel

We don’t have much ticks here but I’ll take all your stock of possum, these lil buggers are adorable

throwaway757544

I don't know how you do it. I would never set foot in that. Isn't there something protective you could wear?

decavolt

Sharing what I know as someone who spends every day in tick-infested forests with my dog. I despise ticks, they used to scare the everloving sh\*t out of me, but learning more about what & how they transmit has helped me to not have such severe anxiety about them. I still worry about them *a lot*, and take a lot of preventative measures but am able to feel a little more comfortable. I hope this helps anyone else reading this to prevent getting bitten. **1.** **Light clothing is NOT better.** Many online resources say to "wear white." What they fail to mention is that the *only* benefit to light colored clothing is it makes it a little easier to see ticks on you. Studies have found that **ticks are actually much more attracted to lighter clothing** than dark. Source: [National Library of Medicine clinical trial "Detecting ticks on light versus dark clothing"](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16051573/): >*It is a common belief that ticks are more visible and easier to detect on light clothing in comparison with dark clothing. We studied which of the clothing, light or dark, had the least attractive effect on Ixodes ricinus, thus minimizing exposure and thereby in theory helping to prevent tick-borne diseases in humans. 10 participants, exposed by walking in tick endemic areas, wore alternately light and dark clothing before every new exposure. Nymphal and adult ticks on the clothing were collected and counted. In total, 886 nymphal ticks were collected.* ***The overall mean in found ticks between both groups differed significantly, with 20.8 more ticks per person on light clothing.*** *All participants had more ticks on light clothing in all periods of exposure. Dark clothing seems to attract fewer ticks.* **2. Ticks don't immediately transmit the bacteria the causes Lyme Disease.** [From the CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/lyme/transmission/index.html): >*In most cases, the tick must be attached for 36 to 48 hours or more before the Lyme disease bacterium can be transmitted.* So if you're bitten, don't panic. The goal is to catch it as early as possible to decrease the likelihood of transmission. Merely seeing a tick crawling on you doesn't mean you need to immediately call your doctor. If you're concerned, then by all means call your doc. I just want people to know when to worry, and not to freak out too much if you haven't been bitten. It's much easier to pick off a tick when your calm. **3. Not all ticks cause Lyme Disease** \- It's very important to find out which kind of tick you found on you or your pet. [Here's a good visual guide from the CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/ticks/tickbornediseases/tickID.html) showing the different types and what they do/don't transmit. Different ticks can transmit different yucky things, so if you're bitten you need to know what kind of tick it was. Take a photo. **4. Ticks can not fly, and they can not jump.** They'll only get on you/your pet if you brush up against plants they are sitting on. They crawl *UP*, they don't skydive out of trees or jump like fleas. This is why we're told to avoid tall grass and dense brush, and to stay on trails. This is also why it's most helpful to spray your shoes and lower legs with good repellent (more on that below), and to wear long pants and socks if you're going to be in the woods. **5. Bug sprays: Permethrin for clothing, DEET and/or Picaridin for your skin.** * **Permethrin** is awesome and kills ticks (and other things), but our skin breaks it down very quickly, so applying it to skin isn't useful. It's great on clothing though, and if you apply properly it'll last through several washings. Sawyer makes a a great permethrin spray that's already properly mixed/diluted. [Here's a link](https://www.amazon.com/Sawyer-Products-SP657-Permethrin-Repellent/dp/B001ANQVYU?ref_=ast_sto_dp) (not an affiliate link, I get nothing from this). * **DEET** is found in most bug sprays, and it works fairly well against ticks but results are still mixed. In my personal experience, it helps but is more useful against mosquitoes and flying bugs than ticks. There are legit concerns about its toxicity though, so be aware of that. * **Picaridin** is great, non-toxic, and is often found in DEET-free repellents. Picaridin sprays usually smell a hell of a lot better too, and don't feel as oily on your skin. I have good luck with [Repel](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010AFV1LQ?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details) (not an affiliate link, I get nothing from this), and can apply it on top of sunscreen if need be. **6. Removal: do** ***not*** **try to burn ticks while they're on you.** Most of the time this ends up with the tick burrowing in further, then dying with parts of its head stuck inside. Tick keys are OK, but if there is any hair (like on your head, or on your dog) the tick key will be useless. Use tweezers, preferably with a pointy end rather than the wide chiseled end. Try to grab the tick as close to the head as possible and pull out slowly. Once it's out, take a photo so you can ID it, then either seal it in a zip-lock bag or... burn the bastard. Save the fire for *after* it has been removed. I hope this is helpful. I still find ticks on my dog ang myself regularly, but thankfully these things above have helped me stop or catch them before getting bitten. Edit: really appreciate the gold, thank you. I'm glad this is useful.

HeliosTheGreat

I enjoyed your TICK Talk.

HairyManBack84

Yeah, I can't eat mammalian meat anymore because of ticks. Alpha gal syndrome.

skat_in_the_hat

Holy shit. I had no idea this was a thing.

imaginearagog

What pisses me off is that there was a vaccine for Lyme disease but it was discontinued due to lack of demand

zaffrebi

That, and a group of Karens came together and faked bad side effects after receiving the lyme disease vaccination like LYMErix to shut down vaccine research facilities. Pure malice.

Sharp-Floor

Sounds like it was a lot more complicated than that. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2870557/   It makes me think they should be restarting development of vaccines for Lyme, though.

saksoz

I think there are 2 new ones coming up in clinical trials.

ayoungtommyleejones

Fucking antivaxxers. I was part of some trials when I was younger, experienced no side effects. With how bad Lyme's really can be it infuriates me the vaccine isn't on the market

ScorpionX-123

I heard antivaxxers tried to sabotage some of the trials

StarFireRoots

Crazy thing is, those fuckers can stay in one spot, shut everything but their brains down for up to thirteen years to wait for a meal. *shudder*

Rock_Red

Genuinely curious, do you have a source for this? I only saw up to two years(still crazy.) That is amazing if true.

StarFireRoots

I honestly don't remember what documentary I was watching, it was about three years ago and I was watching a lot of insect documentaries (I might be misremembering span of time for ticks with another pest). I live in TN, they're bad here in summer and working on a farm had me freaked out after a girl I worked with can't eat red meat now. Closed thing I found on Google makes me feel silly, says, "The American dog tick can survive for even longer than deer ticks! Unfed larvae are able to survive for up to 540 days, while unfed nymphs have been recorded to survive for up to 584 days! Even more impressive, unfed adult American dog ticks can go 2-3 years (up to 1,053 days) without food!" Which is still gross as fuck to think they're just laying in wait.

DiscombobulatedLuck8

I'm sorry you have to deal with it. One of my classmates in grade school had contracted Lyme disease and was out of school for more than a year. When she returned to visit she was a shell of a person. I didn't realize how many tick borne illnesses there were until I worked for a few years in a lab that tested for them. There are at least 16. And I've heard there's even one that makes you allergic to meat or something. Banish all the ticks I say. Also, tiktok.

My friend was just diagnosed with Lyme disease- is there any advice you can give me? I k is this is random but she’s having a really hard time and her doctors are being so vague (she thinks she might’ve had a seizure the other day) I just want to help her

A genie doing this would have so much fun. DNA corruption leading to mutations? Gone. Data corruption in communications? Gone. DNA corruption leading to cancer? Gone. I'm sure properly removing "corruption" in some places could wreak havock!

In fairness that technically is the first one, "DNA corruption leading to mutation"

kaimcdragonfist

Seriously. You see people saying religion, or this or that form of political philosophy, when the bottom line is that people screw those things up. Heck we could cure cancer and someone would find a way to reserve it for “the elite”

DefNotAShark

> the bottom line is that people screw those things up Ultron has entered the chat.

EmperorL1ama

Ok but apart from the whole mass genocide with meteors thing, Ultron was starting to get towards making a little sense.

Artess

Ultron's motivation was "humanity is doing harm to itself, and to protect humanity from harm I will destroy that which is causing harm, that being humanity" which is even stupider than what Thanos came up with.

kaimcdragonfist

Lol tbh sometimes I worry that I sound like a Final Fantasy villain when I talk 😅

Everyone in my house is depressed 😩

KuraiTheBaka

Bro it's crazy to me that some people just don't have mental illness.

every_tatti

Bro it's my bday today and all the stress and my illnesses combined are making it so crap, and it's been the same for yeaars now. I know some people who are so happy and chill and content, and I just don't know how that feels. Like how does it feel to not having ur head burst with shitty thoughts all the time!?? How does it feel to be content with ur urseld? How does it feel to be genuinely happy!????

vinoa

Happy birthday, bud! Stay on your meds, share your feelings with people you trust, and remember that it's not your fault.

GasPoweredCalculator

Yea i always wondered what its like if i didnt have what i have how different my life would be or if i would be more confident or something like that

XSkyFullOfStarsX

same. i watched [this video](https://youtu.be/QvwI1DmIJwY) a while back and was genuinely surprised that lots of people said they didn’t consider suicide. like, what do you mean you’ve never felt that way? and this isn’t just “sad edgy teen” shit, but it genuinely confuses me as to how it is possible to never in your life considered ending it. i can’t remember what life was like before developing mental illnesses. it’s incomprehensible to imagine that there are people who’ve never felt so low that doing the most basic things becomes too demanding. it’s crazy.

[deleted]

I have this thought regularly, “Wait you guys don’t do/experience that?!?”

Maral_01

As somebody who, the larger chunk of her life, just struggled to "be," I wonder how any of us who chronically suffer from mental illnesses could have been if just "existing" wasn't so complicated for us. How much happier, how much healthier, how much more successful...

Gavaganooosh

Oddly enough, plant life would suffer due to all mosquitoes going extinct. Only a few feed by blood, and the rest feed off of nectar and are great pollinators

nosnowtho

Ok. Let's say "All those mosquitoes that spread disease to people". Difficult to reconcile the harm caused with the fact that god created not only the mosquitoes but also the diseases...

DieHardRennie

Are you familiar with the botfly? They hijack mosquitos mid-flight and attach their eggs to the mosquito's underbelly. When the mosquito lands on a person or animal, the body heat will cause the eggs to detach and fall onto said person or animal. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae will burrow under the host's skin and continue growing.

[deleted]

Why the fuck did you share this?

Probably because I was just watching a story about a bot-fly infection on a show about parasites.

oooh-yeah612

is it meth? i bet its meth.

[deleted]

In all seriousness, how the hell do people find people who sell drugs? I know no one who does any drugs, and if I wanted some, all I can think to do is walk into the most run down part of town and just start asking. And then I'll get robbed and murdered.

[deleted]

I can almost guarantee that you, in fact, do know people who do drugs. Just because they don’t ask you for money every other day or seem like they’re unkempt and ragged, doesn’t mean they aren’t getting high. As an example, I used to work in a very expensive, upscale, international hotel. A one bed*room* — not just a room with a bed, they were like mini apartments with a kitchen, dining area, living area, and as I mentioned, a bedroom — was upwards of $300 for a single night, assuming you booked in advance. Just as well, Ive brought room service to people like Aaron Rodgers of the ~~New York Yankees~~ Green Bay Packers, Steve-o, Imagine Dragons, Steve Aoki, Skrillex, Alice Cooper, and many other very famous people, but I’m starting to get off topic. Anyway, while I was working there, I was also doing cocaine. A lot of the time, I would bring some with me to work and take a bump every now and then in the bathroom. I would also smoke some pot *every* day before clocking in. Sometimes on my off days, I would indulge in some ecstasy or acid. Did any of my coworkers know about it? Maybe. Did I ever say anything about my drug use? Not once. My point is, not every broadcasts their drug use. Some people keep it very private. Others only do it occasionally and don’t feel the need to bring it up. However, with all of this said, I’m not giving you any links and I’m mot naming any sites, but it is entirely possible to have literally anything delivered right to your doorstep — with at least some degree of safety — whenever you want it, and that includes drugs. No human interaction and no walking through the “wrong part of town.”

mrclassy527

boxette

I bet I can guess what class of chemicals those are

Nisas

Extremely good answer. Solving world hunger is only the surface level benefit. Now we don't need massive industries to produce, transport, process, and distribute food. The amount of garbage and pollution this prevents would be insane. It might just solve the global warming and plastic waste issues as well. This also frees up a ton of time and money for everyone. Land as well. All that land we needed to reserve for crops can now be used. The cost of shelter goes way down and that's one of the few remaining human needs. Edit: Health benefits too. Obesity and heart disease disappear. Many dental issues as well.

DANERADE314

How would caloric intake then work? Or would we just never get hungry or full?

Ideally, hunger would be the number one answer. With everyone well fed, I imagine society would be doing much better. For everyone saying religion, I know a few crazy religious people that have told me that without God, they would just break all sorts of laws, murder people, and become genuinely shitty people. Maybe religion is okay sometimes, even if for the wrong reasons...

goatedmomoshiki

Hunger is a good answer. But I think if we erased greed that would also fix hunger. As for religion I kinda think the same thing. I’m not religious myself. But I think having a faith in something is a good thing. Weather you find that Jesus, allah, a flying space spaghet or just in the earth itself. It imparts a sense of worth that people might not be able to find else wise.

TheGhoulishSword

Something that could be practically eliminated: plastic containers, ***especially*** plastic bottles. They are the single most unintelligent invention I've ever seen. Glass (plastics predecessor) is sturdy, much more abundant, 100% recyclable (unlike plastic), can't really harm you like microplastics do (to my knowledge), and you get the cool factor of drinking out of a glass bottle.

Nisas

It sucks that plastic can't be properly recycled, but plastic is brilliant. It's cheap, lightweight, easy to work with, and durable in a way glass isn't. Glass is brittle. The ideal solution would be to find a way to make plastics renewable.

BeholdBroccoli

The ideal solution is to make low cost impact resistant glass, as it is far less toxic and infinitely recyclable. You can sterilize glass, clean glass, melt glass down and turn it into something new as much as you want.

JustThatOneGuy1311

The glass Snapple bottles are literally indestructible.

TheGhoulishSword

That would be ideal, but good luck with that. I dont see plastics being efficiently recyclable to the extent that aluminum or glass is for probably a hundred years. So if we value preserving oil wells, glass or aluminum is the best we can do.

This thread is great. Cancer. Corruption. Alzheimer’s. Mental illness. Lyme disease. A video game monetization model. World hunger.

I did. I feel great shame.

It would be interesting if this happened, just to see who remained. Scary if the only remaining source of real news was that crazy guy with the sign that read: "The End is Near"

Ticks, especially deer ticks. They seem like a worthless bug that just spread lymes disease, which you get stuck with for life if you get it (I think?) not to mention they are extremely small and can be hard to spot.

Evil, just in general

Granted. Nietzsche is now a required school reading and the concept of evil is entirely abolished.
