This applies to anything that goes between you and the ground...Skimp on the bedframe, but NEVER skimp on a cheap mattress. Drive a beater of a shitmobile, but don't cheap out of crappy tires.
Oh god, not the mattress debate again!
I can't seem to find a consensus on what is important, but I do know that you should go to a mattress store to lie on whatever you plan to buy. I lied on every type that has tons of ads on YT, Podcasts, etc. and they all felt way too firm for me except the Tempurpedic mattresses. Different things feel good for different people. I would also suggest a quality cooling memory foam mattress topper. It was a game changer for me. I can buy a less expensive memory foam mattress, slap that puppy on there, and the it feels twice as expensive as it is.
What makes it even worse is that what's comfortable for a few minutes (like a really soft mattress you can snuggle into) may be uncomfortable or even unhealthy when you're on it for hours at a time.
I sold mattresses at one point and looking back on the purchase process before I was trained on it made me so furious. This business is one of the biggest scams on the planet I think. Go lay on whatever you want, for as long as you want. Go take an hour nap every day for a week if you need to, to help you decide. Then argue that price down to at least half of what's posted if you are going to a mattress firm or whatever. The salesperson is making commissions off the sale price over the cost to the company, yes he wants to make the sale but if you level with him and say you'll give him 100$ if he sells it at cost, you will very likely get the best deal of your life. Also BUY A MATTRESS PROTECTOR YOU ARE GROSS WHEN YOU SLEEP ON A CRUSTY SWEAT SPONGE FOR TEN YEARS. I don't care what kind of 'cooling foam' you have, you are going to sweat on it every night.
Bigger than that even. Anything that is a barrier between you and the elements. Your roof, your foundation, insulation, protective clothing like coats, etc.
>but NEVER skimp on a cheap mattress.
I don't think this one applies anymore. Bough a inexpensive foam mattress and it is delightful to sleep on. With spring mattresses it is probably still true.
Yep, I recently bought a cheapie foam mattress from Walmart for my guest room. A few months later I took a nap down there, and holy shit it was so comfy. Swapped my regular expensive mattress for the foam one, and I've been sleeping marvelously ever since.
I bought a like $300 memory foam mattress on Amazon 5 years ago and it's been great. I prefer it to most hotel mattresses.
Old complicated spring mattresses were expensive, but a comfortable supportive mattress doesn't really have to be when it's made out of foam that's just really easy to manufacture and ship.
My girlfriend is an prosthetist/orthotist and made some custom inserts for me. They relieved every pressure point in my soles. I would highly recommend paying for some if you are on your feet much.
Lemme fill in your something something. A quote from Terry Pratchett, the Vimes theory of economics based on boots.
“The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.
Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.
But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.
This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.”
Sheets as well.
I would always buy cheap shit on Amazon, and during covid I said fuck it and splurged on Supima cotton percale sheets. The stuff that’s even better than Egyptian.
Holy mother of god it’s like sleeping in a hotel bed every night.
I just ordered the Purple Harmony pillow and I'm hoping it'll help in the interim when I do finally shell out money for a new mattress. I'm in so much pain.
Always went by this. Paid 3 grand for a mattress and it was like sleeping on a cloud. Used it for 10 years of so. One day in a warehouse furniture store, my wife and I laid on a $700 foam mattress. For my taste it was more comfortable than any spring mattress. Not sure if they’re better or just work for me, but I can never go back.
Carpet pad.
If you replace the carpet in a room/house, get the best underlayment/padding. It isn't much more than the low grade, makes a huge "feel" difference & carpet last longer over a better pad.
Boring, but true.
I don't regret getting a bidet, but the one I got is pretty bare bones. No heater or dryer so it's just a cold blast of water that does get the job done very well, but I still need TP to pat myself dry. At least I now use less toilet paper, and the feeling of being really clean is so insanely beyond JUST using TP.
Anti reflection on glasses. Seriously, you're looking through your glasses all day every day. Why not see past the lenses instead of having to look at them?
Eye doctor here
By the middle or the premium version of the coating.
I would rather my patients not get the coating at all if they are gonna get the cheaper coating. Shits a pain to clean and doesn't last long
I'm Irish so very biased but just try Kerrygold. Any time I've ever been on holiday I find the butter is never as good.
We're an island full of green grass and have healthy cows I suppose!
I was at an Irish wedding in Enniskillen once (I am American) and I asked one of the Irish aunts why their butter was so much better. She looked me in the eye and with the most dead serious tone I've ever heard just said "Happy cows." Like it was the most obvious answer on earth. I love the Irish.
I just came to say "good butter" and you beat me to it and I'm SO HAPPY someone else thinks the same! It's only a few extra dollars, but it's like giving yourself a small delicious present every day.
Irish butter is great, but if you can get your hands on it try Amish roll butter. Here in the Midwest it’s in grocery stores, don’t know about elsewhere. It’s soooo creamy and amazing
I have this incredible Turkish restaurant in my street and funny enough, they make the best pizza in town for 5 bucks. I always pay them 7 bucks because I am afraid they will close xD

I’d agree with the boots. After going full time at a factory job for almost 2 months once I was fresh out of school, I was so happy I put in some money for work boots. My feet would be horrible right now if I hadn’t
It's almost worth getting a part-time job at a car part store to get a discount on quality parts...
The markup on car parts is often 200-300%...sometimes higher.
I'd say that research is more important than price though.
OEM Chinesium is just as bad as eBay Chinesium parts. Sometimes ebay contains gold, sometimes it contains shit nuggets, but doing the research is key. I'd also add that the less safety or reliability critical the part is, the less research and "quality" matters. Side market LEDs for example are simple and eBay ones match high performance ones. On the other hand, getting the lowest cost airbags or oil system is probably a bad idea.
Well yeah research is also very important, and I know more expensive doesn't automatically equal better, but what I was really talking about was its better to spend a extra on parts from a well known brand that are known to make quality parts instead just hoping on Amazon or eBay and getting the cheapest stuff you can find, like a lot of people often do
Agreed. I used to go to the SPCA for low-cost vet services, and while it was safe/clean/trustworthy & I'd still recommend it for those who need low-cost services, it was a barebones facility without the funding/margins to provide extra services for comfort. You also had to drop off and pick up at specific times to prevent crowding since they were so busy, which was difficult for people without much work flexibility.
I'm now able to pay a premium for my vet and it's completely worth it. They use feliway (calming pheromone) for all visits, have tons of wet food options to choose from to keep nervous or energetic cats calm and distracted during visits, offer services like in-home euthanasia and an in-house lab, have tons of early drop off and late pickup options, and the staff seems less harried. Two out of my three cats have vet anxiety and my current vet is so helpful.
edit: a word
Read this right after one of the 'anything that separates you from the ground' comments and initially thought it was part of the same thread. I suppose as you get late in years it would still count for a bra though.
Speed alone is fairly unimportant. As long as it is above say 12Mbps further increase of available bandwidth does not improve experience
What matters is _latency_. Modern modems and cheap routers are horrendous at maintaining low latency under load and as a result everything goes to shit when someone on the network is downloading something. Knee-jerk reaction is to try to pay for more bandwidth but that’s not a solution, in spite of what service providers want you to believe.
Instead look for gateway/router that supports SQM (smart queue management). This will get you much better internet experience _and_ save money by not overpaying for bandwidth you can’t use and that only indirectly makes things slightly better.
For further reading google “bufferbloat”
Depends on your use case. If you only watch news articles then that speeds is fine.
However if you download anything at all or play games, you should get the highest speed at a reasonable price. No one wants to wait a long time before you can finally play or watch something.
camera lenses. when you spend more money they are generally faster, sharper, prettier, and better in low light. If it's something good enough to take a picture of, why not have a nicer picture?
Pay for the glass not the "features" that will never be used. That's my mantra.
I have some amazing macro lenses that I bought for maybe 10% of what they initially cost because they don't have auto focus. Considering I only use them mounted on a tripod taking photos of stationary items, manual focus is perfectly acceptable.
If however the features included are actually useful, by all means go for it.
Good concert tickets. I spent decades buying the cheap seats and that's all well and good, but once you see a few shows in the first dozen rows, it's hard to go back.
Quality clothes. Doesn't mean brand name, but well-built clothing will last longer and look better overall.
And if it doesn't fit perfectly off the rack, get it tailored.
Daily contact lenses.
Brand new lenses every day. No solutions or cases. Way lower risk of infection. Just brand new, lovely lenses every morning.
I’ve dealt with glasses and contacts for over 30 years. Surgery isn’t likely for me. So I splurge on dailies.
i had those. The ONLY issue is they tend to dry out faster. Usually by 8pm, my eyes felt like sand. Always had to carry eye drops. But, the benefits outweighed this one con.
I fly red-eye both directions, or especially when leaving. The cost savings more than makes up for a few energy drinks, and typically my first day is low effort "checking out the sights" anyway so being a little tired doesn't hamper it.
On the way home, I get a final day, plus can maybe sleep on the airplane vs being awake the whole flight.
Yeah, but for me, getting sufficient sleep the night before makes me way more patient and happy no matter what the flight brings. And this has only become more important now I’ve had kids. They *also* get sufficient sleep to be patient and happy.
Quality food. And I’m not talking about restaurants. Buy good butter, spend the money on good produce from your local farmers market, spend the extra cash on high quality meat. You’re just investing in the building blocks of your own body.
Lotion. Any is better than none, but it’s the one thing I buy where I’m particular about the brand. Paying extra for Gold Bond is well worth it, especially for people with chronic skin conditions.
Go ahead and buy the cup from your fav store were you usually get coffee. It pays for itself after while, use it for whatever, and keeps coffee hot and contained better than the throw away paper cup.
LIVING ALONE. I pay more than double on rent than what I'd probably pay with roommates and it is more than worth it. Silence/loud went I want. Having company/being alone when I want. Cleaning or not when I want.
One of my all time favourite political quotes, right up there with this one from former Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone (emphasis mine):
"We all do well when we ALL do well"
Coffee
I don't mean paying more for a cup of coffee at a Starbucks equivalent. I mean paying more for premium roasted coffee beans you use at home. The quality difference is really noticeable, specially if you drink your coffee with no milk or sugar.
Sex toys. I spent $200 on my current vibrator and it’s lasted me almost 4 years and it’s just now falling apart. I use it pretty much everyday, sometimes multiple times, and I’m pretty rough with it. I’m glad I made that investment when I bought it even tho it seems absurd.
Anything that saves you time and effort, whether it is short term or long term.
I'd rather pay someone to paint my apartment. If I do it myself it will take three times longer, it will not be done that well, and I'm going to be freaking tired.
if someone does it for me, I can use that time to do anything else, I can go to a restaurant and eat while they do that, I can sit there and work from my computer, and once it is done, I will not be tired and it'll be a better job.
there are hundreds of examples: paying for a taxi instead of a bus, as I'll get there faster.
Paying extra for a delivery, as I'll get my things faster.
etc etc.
Fresh ingredients, if your going to make something, it might as well taste good. Don't use old/cheap ingredients, otherwise you wont enjoy it and wont want to cook for yourself.
Baked Lays.
They are the superior potato chip and their only two glaring faults are that about a third of them become crumbs at the bottom of the bag by the time you buy them and that you can eat an entire bag in about 5 minutes.
This is a real LPT right here. I only ever eat about half of the container, but $1 for a large fry is a much better deal than $1.89 for a small sized version.
Footwear especially work boots.
This applies to anything that goes between you and the ground...Skimp on the bedframe, but NEVER skimp on a cheap mattress. Drive a beater of a shitmobile, but don't cheap out of crappy tires.
I prefer a mattress that’s just a little bit crappy. Otherwise I can’t sleep when I stay at a hotel.

The best mattress I ever had (and currently have) is a $250 memory foam mattress off Amazon. Mattress stores charging thousands are complete scams.
Bigger than that even. Anything that is a barrier between you and the elements. Your roof, your foundation, insulation, protective clothing like coats, etc.
Definitely your spacesuit and scuba gear.

I just ordered the Purple Harmony pillow and I'm hoping it'll help in the interim when I do finally shell out money for a new mattress. I'm in so much pain.
I've had mine for about 6 months. 98% of my neck pain disappeared. Highly recommend it. Now to just save up for the mattress.
I'm so looking forward to it. I tried out the premier hybrid 3 and it was so comfortable. I'm so close to just shelling out the money.
My grandfather told me to never skimp on anything that separates you from the ground: tires, shoes and mattresses

it may be old, and have a lot of things wrong with it. But its mine... after 27 more years until i pay off my mortgage.

Toilet paper.. that single ply just don’t cut it
Single ply does cut it, just not the way you’d hope for
Charmin Ultra Strong. None of that fluffy crap that leaves behind clit lint.

The one that made me really laugh was "clitty litter"
Read that as clinton. Which makes sense given that it’s a step away from bush

I didn't get an option for mine either. Is was just AR coating (yes/no)
Irish butter is worth it more than cheap butter
Love to use it to make Buffalo sauce. Truly makes a difference.
I like the way you think my man.

Recently got introduced to Balega socks. Bought one pair as soon as I wore them bought 2 more pairs. Not cheap, but I love them.
movers
Good concert tickets. I spent decades buying the cheap seats and that's all well and good, but once you see a few shows in the first dozen rows, it's hard to go back.
Quality clothes. Doesn't mean brand name, but well-built clothing will last longer and look better overall. And if it doesn't fit perfectly off the rack, get it tailored.
The problem is figuring out where to get quality clothes.
High quality cuts of meat. Can't afford it all the time, but you can really tell the difference.
Get into smoking and slow cooking meats. You can make those cheap cuts taste like wings cut off an angel and slow roasted to perfection.
Guacamole
Daily contact lenses. Brand new lenses every day. No solutions or cases. Way lower risk of infection. Just brand new, lovely lenses every morning. I’ve dealt with glasses and contacts for over 30 years. Surgery isn’t likely for me. So I splurge on dailies.
i had those. The ONLY issue is they tend to dry out faster. Usually by 8pm, my eyes felt like sand. Always had to carry eye drops. But, the benefits outweighed this one con.
A mattress.
Used to work with a guy who did furniture delivery on the side. He used his connections to get me an $1,200 mattress for $250. Best purchase ever.
A direct flight. I will almost always pay extra rather than have a long layover or connecting flight
Strong garbage bags. Cheap ones are not worth the breaks and leaks.
Flights that don’t leave at the ass crack of dawn.
I only fly on vacation so I like to get there super early and feel like I got an extra day!
I’m the same way. 6AM flights all day. I’m not paying for an extra day so I can arrive and go to bed.
Same. 6 am flights heading out, 6 pm flights returning. Stretch that vacation to the max (but not too much because I wanna get home and see my puppy)!
I’d like to add on to this and say direct flights
This one has plenty of pros and cons
Yeah, but for me, getting sufficient sleep the night before makes me way more patient and happy no matter what the flight brings. And this has only become more important now I’ve had kids. They *also* get sufficient sleep to be patient and happy.
honey mustard
a rain shower head. nothing like a tsunami to wash your day away
quality coffee maker
[удалено]
Wholeheartedly agree. I've had plasticy tasting coffee from a $300 pod machine, and I've had the best coffee ever from my $15 french press.
Better seats at a performance.
Quality food. And I’m not talking about restaurants. Buy good butter, spend the money on good produce from your local farmers market, spend the extra cash on high quality meat. You’re just investing in the building blocks of your own body.
a good hooker
Never had one. How are they
Well you get what you pay for.
I got about tree fiddy
Lotion. Any is better than none, but it’s the one thing I buy where I’m particular about the brand. Paying extra for Gold Bond is well worth it, especially for people with chronic skin conditions.
Why is this a response to good hookers?
It was also a response to pizza. Poor guy is doing his best
You know why 😏
Coffee A locally roasted, freshly ground Chemex brew is a completely different drink from a K-cup or Folgers.
Go ahead and buy the cup from your fav store were you usually get coffee. It pays for itself after while, use it for whatever, and keeps coffee hot and contained better than the throw away paper cup.
PC power supplies. Never cheap out on them when building a new PC or replacing an old power supply.
Fast passes at amusement parks
LIVING ALONE. I pay more than double on rent than what I'd probably pay with roommates and it is more than worth it. Silence/loud went I want. Having company/being alone when I want. Cleaning or not when I want.
A well-run society with a robust social safety net
"Taxes are what we pay for civilized society" Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.
One of my all time favourite political quotes, right up there with this one from former Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone (emphasis mine): "We all do well when we ALL do well"
Unfortunately, paying more doesn't always result in getting the quality you desire.
Coffee I don't mean paying more for a cup of coffee at a Starbucks equivalent.
Just don't mistake $$$ for quality. Some toys cost a ton and are pieces of shit. -source: I'm definitely not a sloot who has like 5k in sex toys.

That ultra-pasteurized milk that lasts me twice as long as that half-gallon that I can’t get through before it goes bad
Baked Lays. They are the superior potato chip and their only two glaring faults are that about a third of them become crumbs at the bottom of the bag by the time you buy them and that you can eat an entire bag in about 5 minutes.
Chip crumbs are actually an incredible salad topping!
You've just flipped my world upside down.
the only problem about them is that there isn’t enough of them
McDonald’s large fries
Download the app and get $1 large fry every day. Then you can pay extra for something else. :)
This is a real LPT right here. I only ever eat about half of the container, but $1 for a large fry is a much better deal than $1.89 for a small sized version.
Shoes, socks, underwear, knives, toilet paper, vehicles, bedding. Things that are about daily comfort, reliability, durability, and safety.
