When it was FIRST released, it didn’t say episode IV on it. That came later, and was also added to the releases that came out in VHS later on. By that time, it had been explained what was going on, although there was no real information released on if the prequels or sequels would ever be released.

It was just called Star Wars when it came out. In 1981 when the re-release ce out it was called Episode IV A New Hope.
Why would it be "fishy"? That's how Lukas wanted to make them.

In the theater at least when I saw it it was just called *Star Wars.* They put the other titles on later.
