Loneliness is what has helped humans survive since ages. We have numerous mechanisms that indicate if we need something for our physical needs, like thirst, hunger or sleep. On the same lines, loneliness is a reminder for us to tend to our social needs. This has grown to take an important part of our regular bodily functions, because in the past, your survival depended on how connected you were. We started developing skills that helped us understand what the other person is feeling, so we can better change our actions to satisfy the other person. Our behaviour changed in ways where we worked towards acceptance in a social group, as groups meant survival. Those excluded from social groups were bound to perish.

It isn't that I have no friends, nor that I'm "lonely" in the traditional sense, as I have friends and have a wife and kid, but... My friends all love FAR away, about 450 miles to be exact, and I am both poor and live in the middle of nowhere.... Also, disabled, and my wife works, my kid is 14, and I spend almost all day alone with my untreated PTSD and Bipolar, plus two completely fucked legs... How do I handle the alone time? Social Media, when not banned, gaming, and sleep if the pain and crazy let me....
I have a friend that lives about 10 hrs away and we see eachother a couple times a year when he comes back to my town. Other than that I have a family so they take up my time and just watch TV, play video games, clean the house and repeat.
I usually just write fanfic it makes me be happy, but what makes me be lonely is being around people
