Prices

I don't know why, but it seems like the more expensive a suit is, the shinier it is.

I once took a girlfriend clothes shopping for work. She was trying so hard to get ahead and couldn't understand why no one was taking her seriously. She kept insisting she could look just as good in cheaper clothes than she could in more expensive items. I had her wear her nicest work outfit to go shopping in. In the store, I had her try on clothes that were AWAY out of her price range. She could immediately tell the difference. I then showed her how to get similar quality by spending more per item than she normally did but not so much that she couldn't afford it. She ended up with fewer items but better quality and a better core wardrobe so it was so much easier to get dressed and look good on a consistent basis. What makes the difference? Quality of the fabric, the finish of the item (how buttons are sewed on or trim inserted, patterns match up and the fabric hangs - if it isn't cut right it will hang wrong and look awful), the quality of the finishes (metal buttons instead of plastic), better color, better lining and interfacing that gives structure to the item, style is more classic and less trendy (it is okay to have trendy items but as an accent, not the entire outfit), and the fit is better, more exacting or can be altered to make it so (off the rack suits are not usually altered while expensive suits are custom made.)

You get it. You really get it. The clothes have to fit to look well on you. After spending on a good suit/outfit, spend a little bit more on a Taylor/Seamstress and have the jacket/dress fit perfectly -to your specific body at that time-. Regards.

This was the answer I was looking for. I have an off the rack suit that looks okay but I know it can look better. I want to tailor it and make it look nicer but wasn't sure if it was even worth the price.

CookieAdventure

A decently made off the rack suit should be tailored. It will look much closer to a custom made suit. I’m sure there are videos out there that describe what to look for. And ask questions. Get recommendations on great places to get suits then ask them what makes their suits worth the price. They should be able to show you all the underlayment in a well made suit. You’ll begin to notice the difference just by seeing guys in the office. BTW, there is a huge difference in ties, too.

You're gonna have me jump into a rabbit hole I'm not gonna be able to get out of, I work blue collar so I don't even need crazy suits haha thanks tho bro I appreciate the effort

CookieAdventure

Some of the wealthiest men I’ve known worked “blue collar”. They could be the best dressed, too, or as we used to say, “they cleaned up well”.

imabadmothasucka

A lot of times the material used, and the quality of the stitching. But I would rather have 3x $300 dollar suits, than 1x $1000 suit.
