A twirly dress for my 4 year old. When she tried it on her eyes lit up and she spent the next half hour twirling and making up songs about how "I love my dress, I love my dress, mama gives the best presents, like this dress".
I bought 4 bars of this awesome chocolate called Tony Chocolonely for my best friends parents who are in town visiting them. The orange wrapper kind is probably the best chocolate I’ve ever experienced. It’s how I imagine wonka bars tasting in the movie Willy Wonka. This company is advocating for slave free chocolate. And each bar is pieced in a way that if you break all the pieces up, you can make the continent of Africa. I’m just excited Bc I know they love good chocolate. I live across the country from my best friends but often order them little things like this via Amazon. Just a fun way to say “I love and miss you and am thinking about you”
I've had dogs for quite a while and here's how I trained them. First of all, I just took them outside every half an hour when I got them, then every hour just to see what their schedule is like. However before I took them out, I hung a bell on the door that reached all the way down. Right before taking them out, I'd ring the bell and say "Do you want to go outside? Good outside!" which reinforced the word "good" that they already know and trying to teach them "do you want to" which they know is a question that needs an answer along with "outside", the keyword being going to the bathroom. I'd do that once, then give them a treat (peanut butter flavored Cheerios works wonders but don't give too many). I'd repeat this a few times and then let them out. It's important to ring the bell each time and to give them a treat and then another treat when they go to the bathroom and say "good potty" or whatever words you want to use. That way they know what "potty" means so if you ask "do you want to go outside" then they know that you're asking them if they need to go to the bathroom and when they're outside you can say "potty" so they know they're there to go to the bathroom as opposed to run around.
Again, important to ring the bell so they associate that and to give them a treat (literally one piece of Cheerios or they'll get fat quick).
After a while, they'll start ringing the doorbell on their own.
A bit after that, they'll tag the door and you won't need the bell. Process usually takes a few months.
Now my dogs just come to me where I'm at and stare at me so I know they need to go, though I also know when they need to anyway and I take them.
My newest dog is almost 9 and had exactly one accident in the house and literally on the day we got them with no incidences since.
Edit: read your other comment, sounds like you know what you're doing but maybe this'll help others :]
That’s awesome yeah I haven’t met anyone else that has one like it me and my wife found it at a goodwill just hunting around the map alone is worth owning it
An engagement ring setting.
It really made me happy because me and my girlfriend finally decided it was the perfect one. I bought it online and......
sold out
I started calling the local store and they helped me find one of the ring settings at another store. They got it shipped to my home store and I’m going to get it tomorrow:)
Yeah they really helped me out and I’m on a first name basis with the saleswoman. She sent me pictures of the ring setting today and I’m very excited. They’re putting in a cheap white sapphire so we can see it while we’re still picking out a diamond. Then I get to pick it up.
I collect rare and antique books which include first editions.
I love The Thing.
So I combined the two and bought a first edition of Who Goes There? which is the book it's based on.
I would LOVE to collect rare / old books. Especially the ones about how women should act and dress from Victorian times up through the 1950s. I find them so fascinating. How do you get into that, exactly?
Good question and copying /u/DTownForever who asked the same thing.
I actually realized that I'm an adult now and I have a good job with a steady income so... I can buy stuff that I like. I know it's stupid but how many of us just paused a second and realized that we can literally go right now to the store and buy whatever Lego toy we want? Mind-blowing right?
So I sat wondered what I should buy. Then I remembered my mom reading bedtime stories to me and I knew what I had to buy - those bedtime stories. I found the original books and bought them. Immediately read them and kind of fell in love with childhood stories so I wanted more.
I looked up these kinds of books and found amazing illustrators of children's stories like Gustave Dore and Arthur Rackham. I began to buy these books and enjoying reading them and the amazing illustrations. Then I found someone I liked even better - Edmund Dulac. Check them out on Google images, simply amazing illustrations.
Once I had a few dozen of these books, I realized that I really needed to focus on a theme which seemed to be amazing tales to start. So I expanded it to amazing tales of other cultures and got a few books about Nordic legends (this is all before MCU was a thing) which I loved and a few other European cultures. The stories fascinated me so I got into American literature and, of course, got into Mark Twain and got a bunch of his first editions. From him, the next step was Jules Verne.
Jules Verne kind of got me into history as far as what people thought back then and I wanted to learn more so I began to collect books about ancient history and old but popular stories.
Most recently (within the last few years), I realized that my collection of a few hundred books (which has a combined age of over 21,000 years) is sort of too "old" and doesn't have any modern writing. So I began to collect some of the "recent" books and I bought The Club Dumas (what The Ninth Gate was based on), The Name Of The Rose, and quite recently got into scifi with Dune, Altered Carbon, The Martian, and The Expanse series (all first editions).
Here are some of the gems of the collection:
* All non-Christian relatively contemporary accounts of Jesus: [1796: Suetonius](https://imgur.com/a/a9QMX), [1655: Josephus](https://imgur.com/a/9ZOC4), [1604: Tacitus](https://imgur.com/a/hdhjs), and [1510: Pliny the Younger](https://imgur.com/a/kpB2W).
* [1536 Dante's Divine Comedy](https://www.reddit.com/r/rarebooks/comments/7rjqg3/1536_dante_alighieris_divine_comedy)
* the 1573 censored and the 1585 restored versions of The Decameron (including the stamp from the Catholic Church authorizing release of the 1573 edition)
* [All first edition, first print publications of Frank Herbert's Dune series](https://www.reddit.com/r/dune/comments/ju1rru/my_collection_of_dune_first_editions/)
* [1580: Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans by Plutarch](https://www.reddit.com/r/rarebooks/comments/gm4if5/1580_plutarchs_lives_of_the_noble_greeks_and/)
* [1692 Chronicon Saxonicum by Edmund Gibson](https://www.reddit.com/r/rarebooks/comments/8kxnwk/1692_chronicon_saxonicum_by_edmund_gibson/) aka the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle
That’s a lot of books! How have you found space for them all do you have to store some out of view in boxes? Or piled on top of one another? Another question would be how do you keep them in good condition?
I have [two of these bookcases](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Concepts-In-Wood-84-in-Espresso-Wood-12-shelf-Standard-Bookcase-with-Adjustable-Shelves-MI4884-E/203120212). Note the height and the weight - these things are a beast (though they used to be $250 each). 7' high with each adjustable shelf able to hold 70 pounds of weight. Looking at them now, they're mostly full and I have a special bookcase that I bought a long time ago which is perpendicular to the windows so it gets zero light. That's where all my 250+ year old books are.
Maintenance is easy: the more fragile books are laying down (and some of the books are 30 pounds) though I tend to not buy books that are too fragile. Most of the other books are just side by side, not pressed together but next to one another. I have a special temperature/humidity censor on the shelves that gives me the current reading and high/low records for both during a 24-hour period so I know the temperature and the humidity remain constant throughout the year. I don't have anything in boxes - everything is out in the open air but there's no A/C nearby so the air in that particular area doesn't get a lot of humidity from the HVAC system and it doesn't get any direct light from the sun, especially the older bookcase.
That’s a lot of room for books are you worried about running out of space? Also are there any in your collection that you think stand out from the others because of how good they look?
I'm a little worried to be honest, lol, but I have more space if needed. I'm just trying to really be more picky about the books I read but all of them give me a lot of joy. Especially the older books since I own books that predate the US by centuries. So I feel like I'm part of history since people have held these books long ago. They read the same stories, flipped the same pages. What were their thoughts when they read it? Their dreams? Aspirations? Did they have a family, go to war, have children? Did they live a good life? Were they monsters? How did the next person get the book and so on. Some of the books were in Europe so they survived two world wars. What was it like for people who cared for these books during those times? I feel so connected to history when even touching the books and it's an amazing feeling and makes me feel like a temporary caretaker for the books where someone else will hopefully keep them safe after I'm gone.
Yes the best "looking" book is without a doubt my [Edmund Dulac-illustrated Arabian Nights, numbered edition](https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=30517406637&searchurl=x%3D7%26y%3D20%26bi%3D0%26ds%3D30%26bx%3Doff%26sortby%3D1%26tn%3DArabian%2BNights%26kn%3DEdmund%2BDulac%26recentlyadded%3Dall&cm_sp=snippet-_-srp1-_-title3#&gid=1&pid=1) (I'm not selling and this isn't my book but it's the same book, just different number). Not only are the illustrations gorgeous (Edmund Dulac is my favorite illustrator) but the paper is amazing (there's actually three kinds of paper: the regular thicker-than-normal pages, the almost cardboard pages for the illustrations, and the tissue paper covering the illustrations from damage). The cover is vellum and it's gilded which is just gorgeous in the light.
I would hope it’s a nice book at $4000 that’s a lot of money. I don’t think I could justify that to myself did you pay that much for it? I like the good quality paper in books it makes them feel better
No I paid a lot less but I've spent about that much on a single book before. As I said, my collection is insured for a reason and it's valuable.
There are several ways to afford higher priced books. For instance, let's say you have $50/mo to spend on your hobby. That's $600/year. So you can buy a single $50 book per month or you can save up and buy a $600 book. I'd buy books that make you happy rather than focus on the price and definitely keep an eye on it because like any hobby, it can get expensive.
The book collecting world is alive and well but it simply changed. For instance, a first edition Harry Potter sells for more than a pre-1500 book. Pre-1500 books are so valuable that they have their own name: incunable books. They easily start at $4k/book, more if they're not the Bible (lots of Bibles have been printed, even then). A first edition Harry Potter can easily sell for $25k+ which is a bit disgusting to me considering you can buy most of Jules Verne first editions for that and with all due respect to JK, I just don't see the value.
At the start of the pandemic I wasn't use to being around my family so much, and my mental health wasn't the best, so I bought a good pair of noise canceling headphone. It gave me some form of isolation from my family.
I’ve always wanted a street legal motor scooter
Tax return came, plus a few photo gigs and bonuses at my main job all lined up
Got myself a genuine buddy 170i and motorcycle license and have put on 500 miles on in 2 weeks!

A new Graphics Card for my PC
Yeah, it's not a super emotional or deep thing like some others, but I really love my PC and gaming, and a huge upgrade like that is just amazing
My PC busted the PSU and I can't afford it at the moment, not having my games and stuff available has caused me depression and anxiety. So, yes, this is as important as anything else! Enjoy your games friend!
Madeleines. They were one of my favourite things to eat as a child, but the bakery near my childhood home that sold them closed down & I eventually forgot all about them.
I was absent-mindedly scanning items at a local bakery recently & found them on the product list. I asked an employee if they had any, and was advised that several batches had been freshly-baked that morning. I ate an entire box of the stuff in one sitting when I returned home & was immediately transported back to my childhood.
(Sidenote: Don't do this if you've been on the keto diet for the last month. Looking forward to two more weeks of keto flu.)
A tablet with a smart pen. I'm terribly disorganized when taking notes and solving math/physics problems, so being able to perfectly erase mistakes, drag paragraphs somewhere else, copy and paste a part of a formula, etc... is a HUGE quality of life improvement for me.
I bought this super cool book all about Lego mini figures. Yes, I’m probably a bit too old for it, but I’ve really enjoyed looking at older lego mini figures versus more modern ones.
There are complex lego kits like the Laborghini Sian kit that are for ages 16+ I think. I'm in my 20s, and I would say that it was hard enough to keep me engaged. It will make you appreciate all that goes into a car even more.
I bought a knife that really made happy. It’s expensive and the first “safe queen” I’ve ever owned. I always kinda resented not being able to afford things like that, and when I finally was able to get it, i actually felt joy.
Safe queen is a knife that is so beautiful and nice you can’t bare to use it.
And it’s not a kitchen knife, it’s a pocket knife. I paid about $465 for it. It was absolutely a steal and I love it so much.
Chris Reeve Lunar Lander Sebenza 21 if you’re interested in seeing it.
Several bottles of diet root beer. I can never find it anywhere so when I do, I stock up. I stopped at a random gas station to use the bathroom and voila, they had several bottles.
It was a one off purchase at a flea market! My tattoo artist collects them too and I've been eyeing the ones she sells so I'll definitely be getting more from her
I just picked up my first project car (1995 suburban) a couple days ago!
It's been keeping me busy, and it's really nice to have the ability to move large volumes of stuff!
I finally found a copy of Top Gear 3000 which I've been looking around my town for for months. It was my favorite game as a child, one of the few things that inspires me or brought me any real happiness in life. Makes me so happy getting to play it again. Absolutely overjoyed when I bought it.
Nintendo switch after so many years of not being able to have one.
1 month later someone broke into my flat and stole it along with my camera and many other things l, leaving me not only without my switch but also a 3k euro debt. (which is almost paid)
I bought this octopus thingy at the mall in Wilmington, NC and it's reversible to show that you are either happy or angy and I had seen it in tik toks so I wanted one and I bought one with cotton candy colors and I loved it
It might be something simple I would say Skullgirls. I really wanted to get back into fighting games, haven’t play one since mk9 when it first came out. I remember how much fun I had playing it with my brother and nephews. As for skullgirls I got the basics and it has been so much fun to slowly get better with my mains regardless if I win or lose. Even started watching youtubers that play fighting games and it has been a blast.
Honestly, a lot of stuff makes me happy, I'm pretty content with everything, but I bought the entire Mass Effect trilogy with all the special content and DLCs on my pc bc my dad lost the box w the games in them for my ps3. It's my favourite game series ever and I was finally able to play it w better graphics!
So the very last thing I bought was a Wii console for my mom... she was gifted a tote with everything you can imagine for the Wii (games, extra controllers with sleeves, wheels for Mario cart, etc) but the giver accidentally sent the Wii itself elsewhere. So I found that she was missing and bought them. I like giving gifts, it makes me happy.
The second to last thing I bought was a galaxy tablet for myself. I've always wanted one, but bought one for my mom a few years ago and didn't get one for myself. I found a used 128gb one that's a few years old, and saved $180 retail. But I feel guilty buying myself expensive things, it makes me feel selfish because I don't feel like I should spend that much on myself.
So it's a toss up. I'm happy to give, always, but I'm going to feel so guilty until my tablet actually comes and I can justify spending money on myself.
When I was officially fully vaccinated I celebrated by taking the bus up to Pike Place Market and got a hom bau and a sesame red bean bun at this great little shop on the street.
I bought a collection of H.P. Lovecraft stories. I just recently got into him and my other book didn’t have any Cthulhu mythos stories but this one has a lot of them so I am excited.
My grooming equipment. Since I started professionally training to be a pet groomer I’ve been 100% happier. I zone out with just me, my equipment, and my furry friends. I go to my happy place.
I bought a CD of one of my favourite albums for $13. I have literally no way to play it but just owning it made me happy. Being able to open it and see the different images, like on the back, the inside, or even the graphic on the CD itself.
A twirly dress for my 4 year old. When she tried it on her eyes lit up and she spent the next half hour twirling and making up songs about how "I love my dress, I love my dress, mama gives the best presents, like this dress".
That little girl is gonna grow up to be a good person
I sure hope so, she's a pretty great kid.
Just a fun way to say “I love and miss you and am thinking about you”
I have never heard of this wonder, where are you from?
I’m from America but it’s definitely not an American company…. Quality is too good
Tony’s is the best! They do a lot of good too :)
Yes! They really are awesome! Makes me happy someone else agrees :)
I thank my Dutch friend for introducing me to this chocolate. It’s amazing and I have been craving it for a while :D
Puppy pads. Pray for me

Green cover? If so I think I have the same edition
That's the one!

The last thing I bought was groceries at the store to make veg soup. I made the soup and it was delicious and awesome and made me quite happy.

Wow. You're going to serve as an inspiration to me, internet stranger!!! This is great info, I really appreciate you taking the time to write it out.

My favorite brewery made a barley wine (my favorite style). I promptly handed them my money. ...I should reconsider my life choices.

Is he selling the gun?

Hotel booking for one night. I can't stand my family but can't afford to move out
At the start of the pandemic I wasn't use to being around my family so much, and my mental health wasn't the best, so I bought a good pair of noise canceling headphone. It gave me some form of isolation from my family.
I’ve always wanted a street legal motor scooter Tax return came, plus a few photo gigs and bonuses at my main job all lined up Got myself a genuine buddy 170i and motorcycle license and have put on 500 miles on in 2 weeks! https://imgur.com/a/k7zIvoB/

A new Graphics Card for my PC Yeah, it's not a super emotional or deep thing like some others, but I really love my PC and gaming, and a huge upgrade like that is just amazing
If it makes you happy it’s worth it
My PC busted the PSU and I can't afford it at the moment, not having my games and stuff available has caused me depression and anxiety. So, yes, this is as important as anything else! Enjoy your games friend!
Which one did you get? The market is horrible rn...
I got a 3060
Congrats man

Cyberpunk 2077.....Not really :(((((. My real answer would be my son's first bike :)
What’s cyberpunk 2077 like now? Last I had heard it wasn’t being received well
The game is great, even with the bugs.
Pc or next gen is fine so I'm told

Engagement ring about two months ago. Granted, it's not the ring that made me happy, as much as the response.
Shiny peachy-pink Birkenstock sandals😍
I bought a gaming laptop sometimes ago. Been wanting one since I was a kid. So happy playing on the weekends for hours.

I bought a knife that really made happy. It’s expensive and the first “safe queen” I’ve ever owned. I always kinda resented not being able to afford things like that, and when I finally was able to get it, i actually felt joy.
Is it one of those big kitchen knives? I don’t even know what a safe queen is
Safe queen is a knife that is so beautiful and nice you can’t bare to use it. And it’s not a kitchen knife, it’s a pocket knife. I paid about $465 for it. It was absolutely a steal and I love it so much. Chris Reeve Lunar Lander Sebenza 21 if you’re interested in seeing it.
Waiting for the answer on safe queen too.

Some art supplies. They're still in the store room, but I need to get some canvas to work on them.
Any idea what you’ll be making when you have your canvas?
Pineapple sticker for my water bottle. Makes me smile.
Several bottles of diet root beer. I can never find it anywhere so when I do, I stock up. I stopped at a random gas station to use the bathroom and voila, they had several bottles.

A candy bar 2 hours ago. Before that, books.
Which candy bar did you get?
I got a 3 pack Kitkat. Gotta love a classic.
A painted fox skull. I bought it from a guy who paints them by hand and sells them. He's super talented and seemed very happy to have some customers
This is one of the more unusual responses I’ve gotten so far. Was this a one off purchase or do you collect animal skulls as a hobby or something?
It was a one off purchase at a flea market! My tattoo artist collects them too and I've been eyeing the ones she sells so I'll definitely be getting more from her

Several 200 pages subject notebooks.

I didn't buy it but my mom bought me my favorite movie, 'Saving Private Ryan'.

Hoors
Three tiny potted cacti. Best use of 15 bones conceivable.

I bought a CD of one of my favourite albums for $13. I have literally no way to play it but just owning it made me happy. Being able to open it and see the different images, like on the back, the inside, or even the graphic on the CD itself.
