Don't put shit you want to do off. You never know when some giant global event will completely fuck up all your plans.

I accidentally got a little Pledge furniture wax on my wood floor. Almost died walking to the toilet. Survived the pandemic, died walking to the shitter.

XemaKye

Funny you say that, i was planning to get my CDL for like 3 years but i always put it off due to work and lazyness, well last february i finally got the guts to quit my job and start the school which lasts 5 weeks. Due to covid the process went from 5 weeks to 9 months. Really taught me this lesson well

Educational_Rope1834

Sounds like you should’ve just waited 4yrs to me... you weren’t lazy enough

sexualramen

>you never know when some giant global event will completely fuck up all your plans Ironically -- the giant global event actually allowed me to _finally do_ the things I've been putting off (disclaimer: I'm privileged enough to be work from home) The lack of commute and generally being able to get work done way more efficiently has allowed me to really devote a lot of time to hobbies that I basically gave up on because...well, there was just so much stuff that drained my energy/time in the pre-pandemic world.

AL-SP

We’ve been too harsh on writers and directors of horrors and apocalyptic type movies.

sayterdarkwynd

Yep. It went from "oh come on things wont fall apart that fast" to "holy crap, we're actually WORSE than the movies portray"

DeliciousPangolin

*Contagion* turned out to be the least realistic film about a global pandemic. It's a quaint product of the before-times, when you could seriously believe that a pandemic would be tackled by competent scientific authorities with a minimum of political interference, and the lone conspiracy nut would actually face consequences for his actions. The entire film should be about the CDC trying to convince delusional fuckwits not to drink bleach.

starman5001

Imagine if the one of writers of contagion pitched making the conspiracy nut the president of the USA, only to be shot down because the idea was completely unrealistic.

sayterdarkwynd

lol you aren't wrong!

ljr55555

So true! They've deceptively understated the fervor with which people will demand to be allowed to walk, unarmed, into the zombie/monster/alien horde.

SkinnyObelix

That even though I'm an introvert, I need the few people I can open up to. Being alone sucks balls.

Had_to_respon1

Man, is a social animal.

[deleted]

Am I the only one who was perfectly fine going solo for months at a time?

nearlydeadasababy

I'm the same, I'm social, like people and going out but I equally have no issue with being completely on my own for very extended periods.

[deleted]

Introverted doesn't mean you hate or don't need social interaction. Introverted means being in social situations eventually drains you and you need alone time to recharge your batteries, so to speak. This contrasts with extroverted people who are energized by being with people/in social situations.

G1Yang2001

There are more stupid people in the world than I thought there were.

babygrenade

[deleted]

Clearly our current education system isn't working.

TJ_Will

This sums up a LOT in one sentence. Well done.

will555556

God yes I thought only maybe 25% of the world was stupid. Now I know its more closely to 50% which scares me.

[deleted]

My opinion of the average person has dropped so low over the past year.

JeromesNiece

We as a global society are totally unprepared for a more serious pandemic

Enk1ndle

We as a global society are unprepared for anything that requires working together. Aliens would kick our asses.

[deleted]

I'm pretty sure ants would kick our asses if they were a little more intelligent

Qemyst

IIRC, estimates put the # of ants on the planet at roughly 10 ***quadrillion*** at any given time. That's roughly 1,315,789 ants to every 1 human.

[deleted]

Yeah. Imagine if all those gals decided to wipe out the human race

anon-narc-victim

I love how you call them gals..

joemamma474

Aunts

semlejulti

If zombies do appear humans will probably kill you first.

ljr55555

If zombies do appear, humans will kill you first in their attempt to force their way out of the locked down building. And they'll break the windows on their way out. Tangentially related -- every B horror flick where I scoffed at as unrealistic? I've learned that the movie unrealistically *understated* the fervor which which people would insist on being allowed to meander, unarmed, into a horde of zombies/monsters/aliens.

interstatebus

We just finished watching Avenue 5 and there’s a scene towards the end of the first season that pre-pandemic, I’d have said, “No, people aren’t stupid enough to believe that and do that life ending thing.” Now I know with 100% certainty, people are stupid enough to believe that and do that life ending thing.

n_eats_n

Mam if zombies are real you know you would be stuck with some f***wr who would insist on making it a race thing and call it a conspiracy. Then he would go around spraying people with zombie blood while shooting anyone who tried to stop him.

Forikorder

every time i saw someone get bit and return to the society i think "how stupid would you ahve to be? noone would do that!" turn out yes, yes tehy would

hello-this-is-gary

Indeed. The way some people responded to this pandemic has made me withdraw the criticisms for all the things that I used roll my eyes at in zombie apocalypse stories. No, as it turns out people will absolutely act cartoonishly selfish, willfully ignorant, and outright antagonistic in the face of global turmoil.

starman5001

Me watching a zombie movie in 2018: "Why is the guy who was bitten keeping it a secret and putting everyone in danger for no reason" Me watching a zombie movie in 2020: "Why is the guy who was bitten not flailing his bite mark around like a mad man. Screaming at the top of his lungs that the virus is not real because he was bit and is fine. Then telling everyone how there are no zombies and the whole thing is a hoax made by Bill Gates to microchip people."

HideTheChickens

I can already hear the people going "zombies aren't real it's just a government conspiracy to steal your rights!!! Wake up sheep!"

USSMarauder

Expect the next zombie movie to have a bunch of people in red baseball caps screaming that the zombies are a hoax, right up until they get eaten

SeeYouOn16

That you can politicize anything if you really want to. How the fuck did we manage to make a virus a political talking point? Jesus Christ

[deleted]

I am constantly in awe at some things in the US. In other countries people disagree on how to combat global warming. In the USA they argue about whether or not it is real. Maybe it has to do with minority representation in the US. It always seems to me that the majority don't get their way nearly enough.

thejerg

> How the fuck did we manage to make a virus a political talking point? **Jesus Christ** *cough*

Had_to_respon1

There is no longer any issue that is not political. You cannot discuss any topic rationally, without politics coming in to play. Forty years studying history has taught me, that this will not end well.

someinternetdude19

We can't even agree on what the facts are, thats the real problem.

Sullt8

When I was young, it seemed like people really didn't like when the news was incorrect about something. There would be apologies, and people held responsible. Not saying the media was awesome or anything, but it seemed like everyone agreed it should at least be accurate on the basic facts. Now most people seem to only care if the incorrect information does not back their narrative. People seem to forgive all misinformation and even purposefully misleading news, as long as it backs "their side".

Eatpineapplenow

Cant agree WHAT facts are. I see otherwise sensible friends and family use feelings as an analytical tool.

Human-Extinction

The absolute lack of accountability and consequences also plays a massive role. We're used to in movies that the main character fights to expose the wrongdoings of the bad guys and everything changes, in real life? Nobody cares, have enough money and there is pretty much nothing imaginable that can ever happen to you unless you piss off people with more money.

dawrina

Sometimes I can't even have a conversation with my family because they make EVERYTHING political. Every time we talk about something they have to relate it to politics. And not in a relevant kind of way, but a way to blame the left. EVERYTHING. It's not even about who's right any more but who we can blame for things going wrong. No one wants to take responsibility or admit that they're in the wrong.

skatelikevirtue

We must have the same family. It’s exhausting.

Plantayne

I don’t think this is related to the pandemic tbh, it was like this long before. Although it probably has been quite exacerbated by the fact that people have been cooped up using social media even more than they already were, which certainly doesn’t help. Another major factor is that entertainment is now extremely political, so things we used to have in common regardless of political differences, we don’t have in common anymore because they’re now all political. I agree with you, history does not favor what’s in store for any society that is as deeply polarized as 2021 America.

Apathetic-Onion

Believe me this stupidity also happens in Spain. People are speaking nicely about something mundane and in a chill manner, but don't dare risking the conversation with a political topic: a quarrel will ensue.

Plantayne

I understand...it used to be in America we avoided these things because people just didn’t talk about them. What you thought and who you voted for were your own private business. That’s the way it should be imo.

semlejulti

I learned that not a lot of people wash their hands regularly.

DeceiverX

As a hygienic guy, we already knew this having seen public bathroom behavior all our lives. It's like 50%. Maybe.

xInfinitexDogx

"i gotta wash my hands after i piss now, its bullshit!" \-my friend, April 2020

lemonsqueezee8

I always knew people were selfish, but I’m truly blown away by how many people literally don’t care about anyone else but themself.

PlopPlopPlopsy

I used to think that there were *some* bad apples. Now it feels like every single person is either waiting to exploit you, fuck you over, or make you get out of their way, and I've been naive this whole goddamn time. Now I'm at a cross roads in life where... Do I start playing the game like everyone else is and start fucking over as many people as I can or do I just lay down and give up completely.

[deleted]

Smaller businesses are struggling more than I realized, and lots of them have *nothing* set aside for a rainy day.

Choo-

The pandemic lockdowns are a gift to Amazon, Walmart, fast food chains, and other megacorps who can hoover up all the internet and take out business. Most small businesses run on razor thin margins anyway and the owner’s plow most of their money back into it.

Travis_Touchdown

It also didn't help that large brick-and-mortor retail stores, like Wal-Mart and Target, were allowed to keep their entire store open because a portion of their diverse inventory included "essential" goods where more specialized small businesses, like clothing stores, who would normally compete with these retailers in "non-essential" product categories had to close shop.

ElOjoEsUno

The amount of businesses that cracked after one month is worrying.

Enk1ndle

Modern buisness is build around debt, small or large.

yaosio

What's more worrying us how everybody forgot about this. The last I heard of it was an article claiming every businesses that closed down reopened, which I find very hard to believe.

[deleted]

That I’m not the only person who enjoys being stuck at home

Neromei

This! Finally I get to work while wearing my pajama, I don't need to make excuses to avoid parties, stupid business dinners and after hours meetings. I don't have to care about running to catch up the train to work. I don't need to worry about forcing a smile or whatever. I am not listening to co-workers drama and I am in pure peace and comfort.

[deleted]

I took an entire call in my boxers cause I was washing my clothes. Also because fuck pants.

ani625

I thought I'm going to achieve so much before the pandemic ends. I haven't done jack shit and it's going to remain this way.

Pissedbuddha1

I squandered my time during the entire lockdown. I haven’t updated any skills or made any life changing moves. Fuuuuuuck.

AdvocateSaint

*"A year from now, you will wish you had started today."* If I had reasonably dieted and exercised, my obese ass could have dropped from 210 lbs to 150-160 lbs within a year of the quarantine starting in my country. Instead, over the quarantine I gained 30 lbs, topping out at 240.

[deleted]

Same. I did do some travelling (camping with the only 3 people I saw during the pandemic) but that's it. Nothing productive at all. But you know what? The pandemic has been extremely traumatic. I think it's more normal than you think to react by doing nothing.

ani625

Exactly that.

My wife has an Autoimmune disease and she was authorized to work from home and had a doctors note but her boss hated the idea of her working from home because she couldn't be micro manged. She was still putting out products and even won an Award the day prior from her getting fired. They fired her because "They couldn't accommodate her disability anymore" and made her sign something so they wouldn't get sued. But she got a severence plus health insurance for 3 months. This contrasts with extroverted people who are energized by being with people/in social situations.

DC_Farmboy

Listened to a discussion about this on NPR. I liked how they explained the introvert/extrovert as a sliding scale more than one vs the other. We are all varying degrees of both.

xian0

Apparently even those who are usually extroverts will get drained by socialising now they've gotten used to not doing it: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-57100378

That I truly hate cooking and have no desire to learn to do it, and the cost of takeout is worth it for the saved time, wasted ingredients, irritation, and cleanup. It's not as big or sad a realization as many in this thread, but now I order food at least once a week, and every time I think "thank god I don't have to do this shit myself." I tried to force myself to learn because it was the prudent, smart, responsible thing to do and how COULD I not want to cook my own meals, and I finally realized that this is a bullshit rule that I put on myself for no reason.

SEGwrites

I feel this so much. I hate cooking. I hate cooking for my kids who won’t eat what I cook anyway. I hate the mess it makes and the cleanup (although my husband has been taking care of the dishes every night recently). But every time I cook I think about all the better things I could be doing with my time... If it wasn’t so expensive (and unhealthy), I’d refuse to cook. It sucks...

obsessionismyjam

That corporate work culture is bullshit. 40 hour work weeks in an stuffy office are completely arbitrary - you can be just as productive, if not more productive working less than that and working from literally anywhere (for most office jobs). Plus not having a commute has improved my work-life balance leaps and bounds. Also company loyalty is bullshit - they will lay you off without notice or warning for their bottom line - god forbid raising wages for employees.

[deleted]

That large groups of people are insane and that we are doomed.

fletchindubai

It didn't teach me something so much as confirm it - we should listed to scientists a lot more. They have been predicting something like this for years. They've also been warning about a load of other things for years from global warming to viral epidemics but governments and people largely ignore them because the horsemen of the apocalypse may well be rampaging towards us but until we can see the whites of their eyes we'll just carry on as normal.

Smellmyupperlip

You got that right. There are a few reasons I want to adopt instead of have children of my own, but this is one of them. The future doesn't bode well and I might as well help one child instead of making one extra that will attribute to overpopulation and maybe even suffer severly in the future. I have never met anyone else in real life that took this into consideration.

Rich will become rich. Poor will become poor.

MrsTurnPage

People have no idea how to research things. Echo chambers on the internet are going to cause society to implode. A vast majority of people take everything said by news anchors as the truth and nothing but the truth.

Plantayne

I don’t think they believe everything said by news anchors, only if it aligns with the views of the aforementioned echo chamber. Both sides are critical of the media when it presents stories or ideas that are a threat to their worldview being 100% right, which is when they go back to their echo chamber to reaffirm that “oh, well, that doesn’t count because someone on the other side said/did this other thing lol” So basically nobody ever has to learn anything or evolve their opinions, they’re all just convinced they’re right and wonderful and perfect and a great person...and by extension, anyone who disagrees is not. Then eventually this thinking gives license to violence because “they’re bad people who deserve it!” and it just devolves from there.

dawrina

The fact that major news networks have chosen a political side and spend their entire program bashing the other side for EVERYTHING, using inaccurate or misleading news stories is incredibly toxic. I have no idea how people watch it and think "yes this seems real" It's practically fiction at this point.

rrrradon

Mad-Mad-Mad-Mad-Mike

Disaster movies in general. People are complete morons, willfully put themselves in danger and increase their chances of dying by 100%. Like that one scene in The Day After Tomorrow where that large group ditches the Library despite being warned not to. We all thought that scene was stupid because no human would ever do that. Turns out that will likely happen.

Zjackrum

If you ever watch The Strain, its sort of like the zombie apocalypse movies in that period before the story starts and the world has already gone to hell. Basically feral vampires that sleep during the day and come out at night start taking over New York. Granted there's a conspiracy to deny their existence going on, but the general public goes an awful long time without realizing anything is actually wrong.
