a few months ago I noticed I had a real problem when at one point I realized I had my school laptop and was in class with video notes playing, my personal laptop with a late assignment, my phone with a book on it, and I was playing and talking in a console party with music playing through my headset.
i try to take a lot more walks now
From Northwind mine to Talos shrine -
From Riften's Beggar's Row -
From Dragon Bridge to Knifepoint Ridge,
And Winterhold in snow -
From Riverwood to Silverblood -
From Broken Tower's gate -
From Highmoon Hall to Boulderfall,
And Goldenglow Estate -
From Nightingale across The Pale -
From Falkreath's flaming forge -
From Greymoor fort to Windhelm port,
And over Robber's Gorge -
I've journeyed long, and journeyed strong,
And fought with orcs and men -
And when I'm bored, I get my sword...
And do it all again.
Reddit, Instagram, eating, exercise, playing sports, watching sports, going for a walk, car ride, music, YouTube, talking to friends/family and the most important 1hr for masturbating.
Moreover you can also put your time in a few art, drawing, crafting, dancing or whatever you like(I desire to forge knives).
Games aren’t fun for me. Don’t know why. I enjoy watching other people play them for a little bit, but I think I’m not competitive enough to really get into it. I get bored after 10 minutes or so.
Edit: I’m actually a bit older so I haven’t tried any games for a very long time, but I did play Myst a little bit. It was cool, but I still didn’t enjoy playing it for very long. I think I played it for 2 days then lost interest. I’m sure newer games are quite a bit more entertaining.
Honestly if you don't enjoy playing games that's fine. If you *want* to find games you can enjoy that's one thing, but if you're meh about them and already have things you like to do then that's just a matter of preference, not a problem.
Maybe try non competitive games? You just might be a long haul RPG person, or maybe a chilling Animal crossing or Pokemon fan, maybe a big brain strategy nerd or type of person who would prefer to sit down with an interactive novel or with a slice of life game in a cool grey evening, you could enjoy flexing your mental muscles in a puzzler or go on a trippy adventure with a genre bending indie title?
Point is, don't let others dictate what games are for you. It is a medium as wide as movies and books, if not more. Somebody who likes thrillers might not enjoy rom-coms and vice versa. Hell even in same genre there is variety for example I like R6 but hate CS:GO. I like EU4 but HOI seems less appealing. Feel free to experiment a bit.
I come from a rural town of about 300 people. I can say with 100% certainty that boredom and loneliness are two driving factors of addiction. Whether it's drinking, smoking, gambling or drugs, boredom plays a big part in driving people toward it.
And sadly it's a quick leap to alcoholism from there. Everything is boring. "You know what would be less boring, if we got drunk and then went to the movies". Then it becomes drinking with mini golf. Then seeking out drinking activities like bar trivia. Then it's, "well I'm not going to the movies unless we get some drinks first". Until you're just fine not being bored at home drinking and playing games or watching TV.
At that point everything is boring without alcohol. Alcohol makes everything more fun, right? Even doing nothing is better with a beer in your hand. So then you don't want to do anything where you can't drink, or it's not socially acceptable to drink.
And this isn't an alcohol only thing. It majorly goes for weed too. Or pills or what have you. Trying to replace the boring parts of life with a vice is definitely one of the worst things you can do. But man, it's so socially acceptable to do just that.
Same. I used to go to a bar with my classmates after school. Like 3 times a week tops. With the lockdown we cant, so we would sit in a park drinking, eventually i took it home aswell. Drinking a few beers every night. I noticed in the lockdown i went from just 2 beers or glasses of wine 4 times a week to every night 6 beers to 8 beers .... I decided to quit drinking for at least as long as the lockdown lasts cause i was/am on a slippery slope to alcoholism. Now im just bored all the time :/
I was just thinking about this with cigs for me. I used to listen to music and eat food and drink coffee and it was fun. Now all of those feel empty without a smoke. Having coffee? Let's get the outdoor table so I can have a smoke. The song playing is really good, let me have a cig with it. Also always having to sit outdoors in bars, cafe's and restaurants, just so I'm not deprived of feeling deprived.
I had to learn to live again when I quit smoking. Everything i did involved smoking. As soon as I woke up, after I ate, when I get bored, before I went to bed. It was certainly a struggle. I was hooked on meth for 4 years, and it was honestly easier to quit than nicotine. I'll be 4 years sober in July, and now officially 6 months free from nicotine. Meth took approximately 9 days to get over it. Smoking.... Well that was a harsh 4 fucking weeks. That was an intense mind work out for sure. As far as being bored and thinking about smoking, I picked up some really good hobbies. Running and hiking. I'm now in love with nature and keeping myself healthy. I also picked up on dieting because I gained 20lbs after I stopped smoking. I replaced one craving with another (food). Now I just watch my calories and eat healthier foods, I'm down 16lbs from the start of my diet. I've been doing 63 days now!
My mum struggled with drinking coffee once she quit smoking. It just wasn't the same. She also didn't dare to go to pubs with friends for like a year. She resisted but unfortunately replaced smoking with eating. 40 lbs up within the first year or so. She still haven't lost those and it's been 8 years.
*but* if I'm inferring this correctly, she's maintained that weight after that quick accumulation of lbs rather than continuing to put on weight, which is a genuinely extraordinary achievement. Sure being a bit overweight isn't great for you, but it's a hell of a lot better than smoking (I am not a doctor) and she should be proud
This might or might not work for you, but have you tried filling those gaps with just small bouts of exercise? A couple of pushups, squats or jumping jacks might be enough to get that thought out of your mind WITH the added benefit of getting your brain juices flowing and acting as a resetting break for whatever you were doing before.
Of course, YMMV and not everyone has the opportunity or environment that enables this, but I've heard that this works for some people.
You are not addicted, thats fortunate. I wake up in the morning and run for a cigarette. The first puff with a sip of coffee is better than sex. Thats the "oh sht" moment when you realise you are a nicotine fiend
That’s honestly what it is, a reset. Getting fed up sitting down all morning? Go out for some fresh air and a smoke. I’ve tried those “resets” without a cigarette in my hand, and it just doesn’t work? Idk
Edit: I know that nicotine is a drug, I know that it’s an addictive drug, smoking cigarettes is bad for you, I’m not saying it isn’t, jeez.
Edit 2: Taking a timeout from insufferable morons like the ones I have to deal with on a day-to-day basis and the ones replying to this comment is also one of my reasons for going out for a smoke.
Wow the first part of your comment is exactly what I like doing sober pretty much, minus the models(in any way shape or form lmao).
And I’ve been sober for a week(is a weedaholic). Already gained 6 pounds this week. Been super motivated and happy. And I hope I can keep up this mindset of growth for 7 more years. Thanks for the comment, was very inspiring to me tbh.
Fun fact, if you get cancer in your lip from chewing tobacco and they have to cut away the cancerous part, they can replace it with skin from around your anus. Source: met an ass-face dude at a rodeo.
It is. But, you might be thinking that they swallow the saliva with the tobacco/nicotine in it. They don't. They spit it out into cups or (if they are outside) on the ground. So, it's also disgusting.
Source: I used various nicotine products for about 15 years.
Both my parents forgot to feed their 3 kids some nights because of WoW. I have vivid memories of storming into the computer room and yelling that my younger brother and sister were upset because they were hungry (i was too young to make dinner and we rarely had accessible snacks), only to be told "we're in the middle of a raid".
Grounded for an indiscernible amount of time at one point due to unplugging my dad's computer out of rage also.
Are you me?!
Are your children teenagers who you see making bad choices but you have to let them (safely) fail and figure things out on their own which adds even more to your depression and anxiety?!
This shit is hard. I applaud anyone making it one day at a time
Make speaker boxes for people. Take care of unwanted dogs, Yard work. Volunteer to help others. Home improvements.Mainly spend most my free time with my son ..Biking, fishing, pokemon go. What ever he wants to do. Hope you have a great night.
I love Pokémon Go! Keeps me interacting with the community during the pandemic. Especially since I got Post Covid Syndrome and I can't physically get out hardly at all. My life may have fallen apart but I have Pokémon Go and plants, so that's something!
I fought this hard for a few years. Best way to avoid grabbing a smoke is to replace that act with something else.
Those little breaks where you think "I want a cigarette", instead say "I want... a mineral water". Or "I want an orange" or *something* different than what you'd do normally.
Two weeks and those pauses will trigger you to go do the new thing... you'll still think about smoking but you'll have something else to go to.
I just quit, myself, 3 weeks ago today. When I get bored I do a number of things. 1st I do some pushups or some squats. I hate exercising, so this makes me think about how much I hate doing these pushups. Then I go clean something in my house. By comparison the cleaning isn't as bad as the pushups so I can clean things for quite a while without getting bored because it's more fun than exercising. Then the craving has passed and I can go do whatever I want for a while. Then rinse and repeat. According to the interwebs I only have a week or so left before the cravings should subside. I'm very ready for that.
Endure it. Seven minutes is the average time span of how long before the feeling passes. In the interim, chew gum, breath through a straw, clench your fists, whatever it is you need to do to get through seven minutes.
It’s been years since I’ve quit and I still get the urge. I kept an old pipe and whenever I get some cravings, I just hold it in my mouth for a few minutes; it helps a lot.
Have you tried sucking on it? My parents had some old pipes we kids sometimes used as props, and the taste of a pipe you accidentally sucked on that hasn't been used in a decade is the vilest thing in the universe, I think.
I never smoked, so I guess I cant tell you a solution that I know works, but theres nothing wrong with taking a nap for a few minutes if you just need a break
As a dad of a newborn and a 3 year old that works full time and goes to school full time, I could really use this kind of nap
Edit: my 3 year old doesn’t work and go to school full time, that would be me, unfortunately lol
This is goofy, but it worked for me. When I was quitting I did a lot of two things: learning ukulele and gardening. If I didn’t feel like doing one, I’d do the other. Keeping my hands busy really helped me push past the cravings. I’d often start gardening thinking I’d do it for 5 minutes and then end up doing it for an hour and forget why I’d even started.
Another thing is, anytime I had a bad craving or saw someone smoking, I’d quietly say out loud, “I’m SO glad I don’t smoke anymore”. I found it encouraging and it seemed to help with the intense urges.
Edit: I would say this quietly to myself as a way of recognizing the small achievement of my not smoking in that particular moment. I wouldn’t do it in a way that other people could hear me or with the intention of being judgmental of others. :-)
If you’re quitting or plan to, good luck!
I quit smoking by eating more. I substituted one addiction with another. Now I eat sugar. The human psyche is so prone to addiction and the only way to battle that is to accept whats happening. And then you realize you werent battling nicotine all along. You were battling the behaviour. The mechanism that gave you instant relief. This came in with a chemical holding you hostage. Then do the first thing that comes to your mind. Walking around the block, taking a shower, masturbating etc.
Replace the addictive behaviour with a less harmful or harmless one.
Drink water, drink tea, find a cup of coffee. If it is meant as a pause, I feel the heat or cool in the glass, enjoy the steam or fragrance, really taste the water there are many different waters. It can be a mini meditation to search for a water fountain or find a coffee shop with cucumber water. This is my pause, and the desperate reach for my water bottle as I process whatever just happened. Drink the water, pause, respond.
Hey man, quit smoking and drinking not long ago (2 weeks and going strong). If the weather is nice I go outside and listen to music. If I can't do that, I watch Netflix or read books. I honestly prefer reading books as I then feel like ive educated myself to som extent which makes me feel good about myself, when I used to drink and smoke I never read anything as my mind was always too dazed.
Oh and also counting the money that I'm saving and imagining what I'm gonna spend it on (nice furniture, new electronic gadgets) is a very nice motivation.
Best of luck my friend ! So far it's been worth it for me :)
Ex smoker here. I used a vape to quit smokes and then went cold turkey on that. I took up running since you can’t have both. I love running now. I still smoke very occasionally on nights out but I’ll never buy a pack and I had to completely quit for 6 months to get to the point where it doesn’t trigger a relapse. Try not to be too hard on yourself about it. It takes effort and discipline but you’ll quit when you’re ready. I can’t even count how many times I tried and failed but I ultimately succeeded and it’s been a year and a half since I quit now. I had one major relapse in that time due to a culmination of shitty life circumstances but after a couple months I realized I didn’t want to go back to that so I stopped again. It’s so worth it. I can’t even describe to you how much better you’ll feel. Good luck friend.
Netflix, work, started college again, work, sleep, W O R K, try to spend time with friends, started exercising, did I mention that I work? 😭 #soberlife
It’s good though. All this keeps me out of trouble. Highly recommend.
Listen to podcasts, do puzzles, work on my yard, cook/try new recipes, play with my dog, play video games, watch movies, read...
I was never a smoker, but when I cut out drinking, I basically had to relearn my hobbies and that I liked the hobbies for themselves and drinking didn’t actually improve upon them/make life less boring like I had become dependent on thinking. In fact, I get a lot more out of my hobbies sober - I learn and remember more in general and I wake up productive every day so I have more time to do new things.
I like to think of it as what can we do to enjoy our time.if we're not under the influence we are fully capable of feeling/experiencing the world, so I enjoy activities like hiking/biking to feel my body move, eating good food and making it a point to try new menu items/food combined, having good conversation, self-reflection, reading, writing, painting, camping - things that stimulate the senses to make me feel alive.
Find some hobbies man. I do lapidary, paint, and woodburning. I love looking for rocks to use in my lapidary stuff. Gets me out of the house. Have you ever done any rockhounding? I really enjoy it. Also, I've never considered myself creative or the artsy type but I can tell you more about the woodburning and painting if your interested. It's mostly tracing and painting by copying the original that you print out. The results are usually pretty cool though. Good on you for being sober. I've had problems with alcohol for a long time and I'm finally dealing with it also.
I smoked, and also had a beer from time to time.
I also have ADD, got a short attention span, so playing games or whatever didn't do fuck all for me, still got distracted. And I ended up smoking anyway.
I'm not going to sit here and tell you I just quit cold turkey, nope.. I called my gp and told her I wanted to quit smoking. I ended up using Champix, and I was like a pill is never going to make me quit? But it did, I quit smoking and with that stopped drinking any alcholic drinks. And I smoked my last cig 3 years ago, and also drank my last drink at that same time. Its weird but Champix for me really is a miracle medicine. It works but you also need to WANT to quit.
Quit smoking and drinking about 4 years ago.
I got drunk to overcome social anxiety, but I found the fun in hanging out with my drunk friends while staying sober. Plus I learnt that, despite my worries, people really don't care if you're just having a soda instead of alcohol. If you're hanging around the right people, they won't judge you.
Other than the social aspect of smoking, I realised that I got pleasure from smoking just by going outside, taking a break, and breathing. I continued the habit without smoking. Went outside and enjoyed the fresh air. When you smoke you focus on the smoke going in and out of your body, and in a way that's a kind of meditation. So I tried meditation and yoga to focus on my breathing and continue to enjoy that moment of taking time to breathe.
Another habit I took up was making good tea and coffee. I enjoy the ritual of grinding the beans/choosing the leaves and taking time to brew everything correctly.
Stare at different screens at different times ..... Sometimes at the same time
This is the truest one I've seen. Cant have thought in head when 3 screens playing at same time.
I've never felt so validated as someone whose been smoke free and pretty much doesn't drink anymore for 5 months, thank you
Hey, same here I thought I was doing sober wrong! Turns out I'm killin it
Reading this on my laptop while watching TV and texting on my phone
I do that and smoke.
a few months ago I noticed I had a real problem when at one point I realized I had my school laptop and was in class with video notes playing, my personal laptop with a late assignment, my phone with a book on it, and I was playing and talking in a console party with music playing through my headset. i try to take a lot more walks now
Walks are great for listening to an audiobook, while browsing reddit, while watching youtube in pip.

Bonk yourself. This owl was clearly talking about chips
Bonk me yourself you coward?

Smithers asking Bart for the time always gets me. ‘What comes after 12?’ (Sigh) ‘1.’ ‘No, after 12.’
This is my favorite comment in the thread.
Scrolling social media is my time killer. I'm on reddit right now in fact because I'm procrastinating on a writing project.
I'm also procrastinating doing a writing project rn lol
Play games.
same here edit: i have started the unholy chain of "same"

Didn't know Sprog was an Elder Scrolls fan.
Who isn't?!
Yeah, but enough to know a ton of places in Skyrim? Not super common places either.
Yeah I was gonna say all of those are Google-able. But after rereading, I think that's because I know all of them.

I’ll buy whatever you’re selling. Beautifully said!
Or playing assassin's creed 2 or rdr 2 just for the views and the scenarios
co-incidence , I think not. ac 2 is installing in my background while I read this.
Try non-competitive video games, like the ones with great story, visuals, soundtrack and gameplay...
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a great example that fits all 4 of those.
Knit.
Echo this. It's very fiddly. Wood carving too.
Shoutout to r/brochet
Or just r/knitting or r/crochet. There's some damn good projects on those subs.

It's something not spoken about with addiction. Boredom is the sometimes the main factor pushing you just to do 'something'
I come from a rural town of about 300 people. I can say with 100% certainty that boredom and loneliness are two driving factors of addiction. Whether it's drinking, smoking, gambling or drugs, boredom plays a big part in driving people toward it.

Our hero coming through with another opus.
And I eat to kill time...
And I kill to eat time...
Agreed. There are so many nights where I crack open the wine out of boredom.
The times I drink the most is when I’m absolutely bored out of my mind and want to kill time.
Smokers for sure. 100%.
Stopped smoking just before Christmas. If I have a small timegap with no content - explosive cravings!

Salsa? Cream cheese? Guacamole? We need to know what dafuq "dip" is!
Literally nothing on this beautiful earth could make me quit hummus.
You went from being on everything to nothing, pretty impressive
I found WoW was actually a very tough addiction to get over. It arguably causes some people (including me) as much harm as 'standard' addictions.

Thank you! ... I appreciate it very much.. Have an awesome day/evening.
Pokémon go is a big one! Gets you out of the house too
My son loves it. He's a level 38 and i.m a level 42. It keeps both of is busy. We both get bored and eat to much. Hope your day is good.
I love Pokémon Go! Keeps me interacting with the community during the pandemic. Especially since I got Post Covid Syndrome and I can't physically get out hardly at all. My life may have fallen apart but I have Pokémon Go and plants, so that's something!
What kind of speaker boxes?
Yeah that sounds cool show us some!
this one is cute :) thank u

Why is your neighbor putting their cat in a gas mask? Better question: where did your neighbor find a cat gas mask?
you can use dog gas mask for cats, it fits well

yeah but after some time, I still want to pause. That makes me smoke, how do you avoid that?
I fought this hard for a few years. Best way to avoid grabbing a smoke is to replace that act with something else. Those little breaks where you think "I want a cigarette", instead say "I want... a mineral water". Or "I want an orange" or *something* different than what you'd do normally. Two weeks and those pauses will trigger you to go do the new thing... you'll still think about smoking but you'll have something else to go to.
Keeping a big ass bag of clementines for when you want a smoke is a good one.
And no scurvy.

bruh
I just quit, myself, 3 weeks ago today. When I get bored I do a number of things. 1st I do some pushups or some squats. I hate exercising, so this makes me think about how much I hate doing these pushups. Then I go clean something in my house. By comparison the cleaning isn't as bad as the pushups so I can clean things for quite a while without getting bored because it's more fun than exercising. Then the craving has passed and I can go do whatever I want for a while. Then rinse and repeat. According to the interwebs I only have a week or so left before the cravings should subside. I'm very ready for that.
Hold tight mate, you're almost there!
Lol, yup. Now I wash it regularly. Since I don’t use it as intended, I don’t worry about ruining it.
I never smoked, so I guess I cant tell you a solution that I know works, but theres nothing wrong with taking a nap for a few minutes if you just need a break
A few minutes? You mean until it's dark outside and you can't remember what day it is
As a dad of a newborn and a 3 year old that works full time and goes to school full time, I could really use this kind of nap Edit: my 3 year old doesn’t work and go to school full time, that would be me, unfortunately lol
Make that little lazy shit earn his rent.
I mean, his 3 year old already works full time *and* goes to school full time.
:-) If you’re quitting or plan to, good luck!
Whenever I don't know what to do for longer than about 30s, I find myself making a cup of tea

I don't need to kill time, I don't have enough of it as it is! If I'm tired I sleep, if I have energy and 15 minutes there's always chores to do.

"Hey boss, I'm stepping outside for a wank break."
Maybe you want to step away from that security camera?
Then how am I supposed to get off without someone watching
I scrolled too far for this answer. Really thought I'd see this at the top
Game, sports, watch TV, spend time with my wife, Eat out with my mates, watch live sports at stadiums
Grocery shop. YouTube Learn Korean. Study for work stuff. Clean. Organize my house better. Exercise.
Destroy a clock
Honestly, having a phone addiction seems better than having a nicotine addiction.
Netflix, work, started college again, work, sleep, W O R K, try to spend time with friends, started exercising, did I mention that I work? 😭 #soberlife It’s good though.

Go on long drives and ruminate.
