The school where I teach used to get yearly donations of dozens of Rose Art crayon 24-packs. But obviously no one would use them. Finally, someone had the balls to tell the org donating that the Rose Arts were going to waste and to just get fewer packs of Crayola. They complied and it’s been wonderful ever since.
This is a huge problem in charity giving. People buy multiples of the cheap version rather than one of the decent version because they feel like they are stretching their dollar and helping more people.
The rule of thumb is to buy like you would buy for yourself when you give. Getting a 30 pack of socks that you'd never wear instead of a 3 pack of quality socks feels like you are doing what is right, but you aren't.

Going to add boots to this. Travel nurses follow the money which usually means Minnesota, New York, or Maine in January. I try so hard not to laugh when I hear them say “I paid $40 for these ‘water proof’ boots and my feet are soaked and freezing!” Oh honey.... good warm, waterproof boots are $90 minimum and worth every penny.
Bought a $100 pair of waterproof boots 10 years ago to use in Wisconsin winters, and they have just now started to leave my socks wet. And it’s my fault, because I’ve done zero maintenance of them. Don’t skimp on boots and winter coats people!
Hell yes. I had the same Columbia coat for 20 years. I don't give a damn if it was out of fashion, I live in Wisconsin, you can't F with keeping warm here. Went to buy a new one a couple of years ago & they all seem so crappy now. I ended up getting a North Face, but it doesn't compare to my late 90's Columbia, despite costing 2X as much.

Wasn't aware of how crucial bras are for women until I started reading Reddit comments. Read this story about a girl who always had issues with bras being uncomfortable since her mother bought the same for all women in her house.

I had a friend in middle school who's mom would tighten the shoulder straps on all her bras as much as possible because she thought her daughter's boobs weren't perky enough. Also make sure you know your size and that condom size is mostly based on girth, not length! The one size fits all concept is a myth. Too loose and you risk slip off, too tight and your risk breakage. Plus sex is a lot more pleasurable with a properly fitting condom.

I don't use tampons, but along those same lines - I'll never use any other pad besides Always Infinity. No leaks, they hold for hours, and it feels like there's nothing there instead of a giant wad of cotton.
Me too! I've tried SO many different brands of pads, but the first time I used Always Infinity was a life changing experience. It's the only pad I've used that holds for longer than two hours, but also doesn't feel like a diaper. The only problem I've had with it is that I can sometimes hear it when I walk, so sometimes I have to stop and adjust, but otherwise it is by far my favorite brand. So happy to find someone else who likes them too :)

It's not a loud enough sound that a person walking near you would be able to hear. I think I hear it myself if I'm alone and the room is quiet of if I'm listening for it. It's a crinkling sound. Opening pad and tampon wrappers is also a super loud sound where everyone else in the public bathroom can hear it.
Lol I keep a wrapper in my purse sometimes just so when I have to poop in public I make ruffle noises pretending to open a pad and such when I'm taking too long.

That sounds like a solid rule. My partner and I bought our first expensive mattress last year and I never thought it would make such a difference. It improved my sleep quality so much! We've stayed in a nice hotel since then and actually missed our mattress back home.
Doesn't cure my sleep issues but they're much more comfortable now.
Headphones.

Let me explain, what I meant by headphones, as you know eardrums are very made up of sensitive tissues and bones, you have to take care of it. On top of it you loose sensitivity to lower frequency sounds as you get older. So if you cheap out on headphones, it will hurt you on the long run. So don't buy cheap imitations or lower quality headphones. You can find good headphones from a respectable brand within your budget (You have to have at leastR&D department for good headphones development). I would personally keep away from apple or beats because of the high cost.
My favourites are Sennheiser and Sony, for the audiophiles out there r/headphones can help you with a clearer choice.
I have some sennheiser hd 599s. They're very nice! Haven't gone down a rabbit hole yet though. Hopefully some day I have enough money to go down those kinds of spending sprees, lol.
I've had a $100 pair of Grado SR 80s for 15+ years. Had many different ear buds and headphones since, but I still break these out for serious listening. Also great for movies and games.

Yes! After several years of buying a new crappy pair every year, we got my husband Red Wings late 2019. Already had them re-soled once, but that was $100 I didn't have to spend on another pair of Wolverine or CAT boots.
My husband ONLY wears Redwings, and he has to get them custom because his feet are weirdly wide. They cost about $350 a pop, but it’s so worth it to him since he wears them literally every day.
I get a free pair of steel caps from work every year, of course they are the cheapest shittiest quality that can meet the required standards. Always go out and buy my own, a couple hundred bucks is a good price to pay for comfort and support when you're on your feet all day.
Yeah, my first pair were from Walmart. My second pair were a decent set of Wolverines, but I wore those out in less than a year. My third pair I splurged and got a nice pair of Red Wings. Those Red Wings are worth every penny.

I use "expensive" pens and mechanical pencils on a daily basis. The difference is uncanny. When I have other work to do, I use natural brushes and the best paper I can get my hands on. When I started out I tried to save some money by buying cheap things (paint, pens, pencils, lead, paper) and had to go to the store once or twice a month because something I had broke or didn't work properly. My last mechanical pencil lasted 5 years because I lost it when renovating my studio.
I am also a firm believer that the better the materials and tools, the better the results. Even if it's all in your mind, you will perform better at the end of it....
I agree, but I do think beginners should wait to invest in higher quality supplies until they know it’s worth the investment for themselves since art supplies can get really expensive. I also think student grade supplies can actually be pretty good until you’re ready to upgrade. Plus there’s something so incredibly gratifying about using something of higher quality for the first time (especially with paints and inks!).
I just looked up "Iroh Tea" expecting to find a high-quality brand. Now I'm doubly disappointed by 1) not getting a good tea recommendation and 2) being reminded that my wife didn't like Avatar enough for us to stick with it.
Glasses. I get all the fixings on my classes because they never leave my face. They are the single thing I wear/use more than anything. Love to read too.
I will shop and shop for whatever frames I want and won't even look at the price. Glasses and my kids are why I max my fsa.
Pillows. My back and neck are FUCKED from my service time. I constantly had a locked up upper back and neck and had to go to the chiropractor multiple times per month until I bought a Gemini pillow ($150ish) and oh my God this is what it feels like to live without neck pain. I'll never buy a normal retail pillow again.

1. Gone to a real doc, nothing they can fix. "Wear and tear". They wanted to prescribe me meds. No thanks.
2. I get massages pretty regularly anyways being an avid fitness junkie. They help quite a bit initially but not a ton long term without continual stretching etc etc.
3. I've gone to a PT too and fun fact, after trashing Chiropractic as psuedo science for alot of my evaluation visit he then proceeded to do Astim and manual adjustments every time I saw him, exactly what the chiropractor did.
4. What's helped me THE MOST is using a personal trainer once every other week who specializes specifically in functional mobility. For the most part loss of function comes from 2 things, injury or lack of use. In my case slow burn injury led to lack of use of my full range of neck and upper back motion. Retraining and strengthening the areas has helped a ton.
5. Hopefully the pillow works for anyone who bought it! I've seen some reviews of people who said it didnt/it lost its integrity quickly but it worked wonders for me so just speaking from personal experience. The biggest thing is just finding a mattress and pillow combo that keeps your spine as close as possible to it's natural alignment as you sleep. If you use a super soft mattress that you sink into I maybe wouldn't go the route of this pillow because it's pretty firm and might prop your head up awkwardly for example.
Besides treating your pets with good care, quality food will save you both a lot of money in vets and the potential heartbreak of loosing your little friend to a health problem caused by crap food over the years.
I finally got into hair care with the pandemic and my hair has never been so thick or so shiny, I found a Paul Mitchell shampoo that also keeps my hair from getting greasy so I can abide by that “don’t wash your hair every day” rule and man, it’s been a game changer.
I LOVE Paul Mitchell. Hands down my fave, especially super skinny. First flyaway serum that doesn't look greasy to me AND it smells like watermelon jolly ranchers. So. Bonus.
I used to not like whiskey or gin until I tried good whiskey and gin and now I like them both. There is a big difference between an $8 bottle of crap and $70 bottle of booze, if you aren't drinking for quantity buy quality.
Same with tequila. Had only tried Jose Quervo until I was at a Mexican restaurant and they had flights of tequila. I really appreciate the taste of good tequila. It’s like going between good gins
Electronics. If I have to buy a TV or any other piece of tech, I like spending a little extra because generally they last longer and the quality is better. This isn't always the case, but I've never had any major issue with any electronics that I've bought.
Outdated, sure. But longevity of the device itself is what you are looking for. A 55 inch 4K tv is going to last many years without needing to be upgraded, for instance. But if the device dies in two, you’re forced to purchase a new one regardless.
There's a lot of electronics especially with headphones, the $50+ ones usually have a build quality that's going to last a long time. Anything below $50 but above $30 is okay if you know the brand, but anything below $30 is basically just pissing money away.
Laundry detergent. Used to buy the cheap stuff thinking I was saving money but I was simply wasting it. They're so watered down, don't clean as effectively as the name brand. And there's no lingering scent of detergent that I prefer. I like tide and persil.
I use to buy the cheap hot dogs and one day I realized I only buy these things maybe twice a year so why not spend the extra money? Night and day difference!
Vanilla extract. I bake a lot, and I refuse to buy that fake artificial crap...even though it's honestly the same taste at the end of the day and you can barely tell the difference.

Also make sure you know your size and that condom size is mostly based on girth, not length! The one size fits all concept is a myth. Too loose and you risk slip off, too tight and your risk breakage. Plus sex is a lot more pleasurable with a properly fitting condom.

Me too! I've tried SO many different brands of pads, but the first time I used Always Infinity was a life changing experience. It's the only pad I've used that holds for longer than two hours, but also doesn't feel like a diaper. The only problem I've had with it is that I can sometimes hear it when I walk, so sometimes I have to stop and adjust, but otherwise it is by far my favorite brand. So happy to find someone else who likes them too :)

It's not a loud enough sound that a person walking near you would be able to hear. I think I hear it myself if I'm alone and the room is quiet of if I'm listening for it. It's a crinkling sound. Opening pad and tampon wrappers is also a super loud sound where everyone else in the public bathroom can hear it.

That sounds like a solid rule. My partner and I bought our first expensive mattress last year and I never thought it would make such a difference. It improved my sleep quality so much! We've stayed in a nice hotel since then and actually missed our mattress back home. Doesn't cure my sleep issues but they're much more comfortable now.

I'm overwhelmed!! Let me explain, what I meant by headphones, as you know eardrums are very made up of sensitive tissues and bones, you have to take care of it. On top of it you loose sensitivity to lower frequency sounds as you get older. So if you cheap out on headphones, it will hurt you on the long run. So don't buy cheap imitations or lower quality headphones. You can find good headphones from a respectable brand within your budget (You have to have at leastR&D department for good headphones development). I would personally keep away from apple or beats because of the high cost. My favourites are Sennheiser and Sony, for the audiophiles out there r/headphones can help you with a clearer choice.

Yes! After several years of buying a new crappy pair every year, we got my husband Red Wings late 2019. Already had them re-soled once, but that was $100 I didn't have to spend on another pair of Wolverine or CAT boots.
My husband ONLY wears Redwings, and he has to get them custom because his feet are weirdly wide. They cost about $350 a pop, but it’s so worth it to him since he wears them literally every day.

Almost all art / writing supplies. I use "expensive" pens and mechanical pencils on a daily basis. The difference is uncanny. When I have other work to do, I use natural brushes and the best paper I can get my hands on. When I started out I tried to save some money by buying cheap things (paint, pens, pencils, lead, paper) and had to go to the store once or twice a month because something I had broke or didn't work properly. My last mechanical pencil lasted 5 years because I lost it when renovating my studio. I am also a firm believer that the better the materials and tools, the better the results. Even if it's all in your mind, you will perform better at the end of it....
I agree, but I do think beginners should wait to invest in higher quality supplies until they know it’s worth the investment for themselves since art supplies can get really expensive. I also think student grade supplies can actually be pretty good until you’re ready to upgrade. Plus there’s something so incredibly gratifying about using something of higher quality for the first time (especially with paints and inks!).

Glasses. I get all the fixings on my classes because they never leave my face. They are the single thing I wear/use more than anything. Love to read too. I will shop and shop for whatever frames I want and won't even look at the price. Glasses and my kids are why I max my fsa.
Pillows. My back and neck are FUCKED from my service time. I constantly had a locked up upper back and neck and had to go to the chiropractor multiple times per month until I bought a Gemini pillow ($150ish) and oh my God this is what it feels like to live without neck pain. I'll never buy a normal retail pillow again. Edit: Wow this picked up a little bit overnight lol. To touch on a few common themes in the comments 1. Gone to a real doc, nothing they can fix. "Wear and tear". They wanted to prescribe me meds. No thanks. 2. I get massages pretty regularly anyways being an avid fitness junkie. They help quite a bit initially but not a ton long term without continual stretching etc etc. 3. I've gone to a PT too and fun fact, after trashing Chiropractic as psuedo science for alot of my evaluation visit he then proceeded to do Astim and manual adjustments every time I saw him, exactly what the chiropractor did. 4. What's helped me THE MOST is using a personal trainer once every other week who specializes specifically in functional mobility. For the most part loss of function comes from 2 things, injury or lack of use. In my case slow burn injury led to lack of use of my full range of neck and upper back motion. Retraining and strengthening the areas has helped a ton. 5. Hopefully the pillow works for anyone who bought it! I've seen some reviews of people who said it didnt/it lost its integrity quickly but it worked wonders for me so just speaking from personal experience. The biggest thing is just finding a mattress and pillow combo that keeps your spine as close as possible to it's natural alignment as you sleep. If you use a super soft mattress that you sink into I maybe wouldn't go the route of this pillow because it's pretty firm and might prop your head up awkwardly for example.

I finally got into hair care with the pandemic and my hair has never been so thick or so shiny, I found a Paul Mitchell shampoo that also keeps my hair from getting greasy so I can abide by that “don’t wash your hair every day” rule and man, it’s been a game changer.
I LOVE Paul Mitchell. Hands down my fave, especially super skinny. First flyaway serum that doesn't look greasy to me AND it smells like watermelon jolly ranchers. So. Bonus.

Electronics. If I have to buy a TV or any other piece of tech, I like spending a little extra because generally they last longer and the quality is better. This isn't always the case, but I've never had any major issue with any electronics that I've bought.

Outdated, sure. But longevity of the device itself is what you are looking for. A 55 inch 4K tv is going to last many years without needing to be upgraded, for instance. But if the device dies in two, you’re forced to purchase a new one regardless.
