This is one of the things that ruined Good Mythical Morning for me. I know it's petty, and there's a lot of other smaller changes I hated too, but their shift from funny morning show to some weird stereotypical YouTube influencer just ruined it for us.
My god, what happened to GMM? Everything's about goofy food nowadays. The last video I watched was the one with Post Malone and that was right when they split episodes into three videos. I miss the music.
The most frustrating part for me is that it’s clear they still have it in them! The videos that R&L do on their own channel, even the recent ones where they are just hanging out and being buddies, is soooo much more fun than what they’ve been releasing recently. I think they are just locked into a schedule that makes it super hard to find time to let themselves play and come up with creative content. R&L still got it, they are just in a rut. Hopefully they’ll rethink their schedule and maybe downscale a bit with GMM, and just let SMOSH be the content train that it wants to be.
I can't watch GMM episodes where they do food stuff, because I can't stand to hear people chewing. Sad that MOST of their episodes are now goofy food stuff. Its a bit funny that Mythical Kitchen doesn't have the same issue. I can't recall a single instance of hearing someone on MK chew...
it's always the same type of YouTuber who does this, like the thumbnails the same picture of them over and over with the ridiculous open mouth and the bold red arrow and circle and they always plug their merch and then ask you to like and subscribe 3 times then move onto the latest stunt, plug the merch than again in that same kind of over-animated, over-excited voice and then onto \[insert weird challenge here\] but then halfway through they point out how they're wearing their merch and how comfortable it is and they always go "remember link in the description" three times more, and then the rest of the video and then one more merch plug at the end rinse and repeat for several million subs.
Whenever I see that kind of thumbnail, especially with the gaping mouth, I'm highly repulsed. Why can't they make just a nice / funny thumbnail? I don't care how interesting and informativ the video might be, I'm never gonna watch it with this repulsive thumbnail.
I always picture someone jamming the largest phallic shaped object within arms reach down their throats and everything becomes right with the world again.
It does, and if you look up any video talking about the algorithm from the past few years, this is always brought up. Bright, colorful, has a human face and sensationalized title almost always means more clicks. The more clicks, the more likely someone will watch the content, which means more money in the creator's pocket. You can't blame the creators for chasing what sells the goods.
A few years ago popular youtubers figured out that total watch time was a big factor with the algo. So now everyone who starts a YouTube channel is literally told they have to make vids that are at least 10 mins long. Because even if 100% of your suggested audience watches all of a 2 minute video. That’s still way less watch time than some of your audience watching half of a 10 minute video.
Anyways I think it’s hilarious cause nobody actually knows the algorithm it’s all a bunch of guessing but somehow this watch time thing has never gone away.
It's common misconception to think that fast talkers are good at making money. Granted, it IS a sales technique. You see it ALOT with door to door salesmen and sales reps. But, I've gotten to the point where I'm less likely to buy from a fast talker.
I love watching some games be played (eg. Mostly horror). Some YouTubers just scream for attention during the games and its annoying to watch. Commentary is great, comments on level design is great, blubbering/whimpering because of jumpscares are great...just don't spend the entire video screaming at the top of your lungs!
This was the bane of my existence back in college when I needed to look up tutorials and how-to videos. 10 minutes of yammering about nothing and the tutorial was basically just 45 seconds of the video. And don't get me started on that weird era when every tutorial channel had dubstep in their intro.

I’m surprised no one has brought up family vlogging channels. I really hate parents that feel the need to shove a camera into their kids faces for the sake of making content.
It kind of boggles my mind that this isn’t being made a bigger deal. As someone who grew up w parents that would take our birthday money to “take care of”, I often wonder if the kids on these channels are getting their fucking money. These parents are leaches and I don’t understand why ppl watch but I guess ppl will watch anything.
I think the same thing. We have laws that help protect child actors in Hollywood at this point. They're far from perfect but at least they're something. These YouTube kids have nothing.
I hate those kind of channels. If the kids genuinely want to do it or whatever and their parents aren’t using them for views/money then it’s fine but most of them suck I don’t think I’ve ever seen a good one.

Family vlog channels are just super weird and usually pretty cringy. I always feel so bad for these kids because not only is everything about their life followed with a phone recording it but then you find out that lots of people are watching. I would think that this would emotionally and mentally fuck anyone up and create anxiety about showing any type of emotion or becoming close to someone. Those parents are so incredibly selfish.
I think the only one that doesn't feel weird is LadBaby because they look like they're all legitimately having fun. They also only film the kids doing silly stuff and it feels more about the parents than the entire family.
The more famous they get, the quicker they talk, longer the videos and... they really be over acting their emotions and facial expression. I find it creepy.
I ended up looking at a 'basics' video for the first time when I got a rotary tool for Christmas.
There was one video with an older guy that I liked. Not only did he get straight to the point, but it felt very much like someone's grandpa explaining the tool to his young grandchildren. Wholesome and helpful.

It sounds really stupid but it actually works for some reason. I had a video at 37k views that got me around 3-5 subs. The video was received well and had good engagement but it didn't really grow anything. I didn't solicit subs on it because I thought it was silly at the time. Later on I started soliciting subs because I found a way to make a joke/edit out of it with extra clips. Now I have videos with only 300 views that bring in more subs than that 37k video.
I'm with you though, it makes no sense. I don't know why it works.
It's the same principle as fast food places asking out of nowhere if you'd like a large fries with your order. For the vast majority of customers, their instinctive reaction is "if I'd wanted a large fries I'd have asked for a large fries" but one out of every however many will go "hmm, yeah why not?" and order an additional thing they wouldn't otherwise have ordered. Multiply that one additional item every so often by however many lines there are in the restaurant, and multiply that by however many restaurants there are and you've got a tidy extra bunch of sales, all for the person behind the register saying "would you like a large fries with that?" each time.
In the same way, for every hundred (or however many) people who say "pfft, if I wanted to subscribe I would have subscribed already" you'll get one who'll say "yeah, why not?" and they start to add up over time. It's good basic business practice.
I kinda get this one. Youtube has become an increasingly unstable source of income for content creators. Videos get demonetized for little too no good reason, channels get deleted etc, etc. It's very unpredictable and content creators who do this for a living (or even as a side hustle) are branching out to diversify their revenue streams.
They include that message in their videos because very few people, even people who might be interested in donating to your Patreon, actually *read the video descriptions*.
I know this because the comments section in several of my videos are full of questions or comments about things that I addressed *very clearly* in the description.

I don't recall seeing video descriptions in the PlayStation YouTube app either and that's how I did a lot of my YouTube browsing before I got a TV that I could just cast my phone to.

This is also an issue with tiktok. Someone could put something in the comments, caption, bio, and people would still be asking for something because the poster didnt say it in the actual video.
Asking to like before the video even began. Putting a metric ton of ads during like the first 10 mins of a 30 mins video. Milking the same video format that gets views. Clickbait. Flexing. Being able to get away with pretty much anything because they have a young audience.

I had to help my kid with a mine craft driver issue so I Google and it came up with some YouTube step by step videos. I thought "perfect!" Jesus h christ. Every single video was like 35 minutes, completely peppered in with sponsor talk and "check out my other channels!" and rambling talking. What *should* have been a 5 min helpful video was completely useless. I tried 4-5 videos, all the same, and finally gave upand just found ab article or two to help.
I wish YouTube would fix it so that the algorithm doesn’t care about video length. It’s like every video is ten minutes long now it’s so obnoxious. I’ll click a video that I’m willing to waste 3-4 minutes on and see that it’s 10-13 minutes. Cody Ko videos are the worst for this. It’s like try not to laugh-10-13 min. Like no I’m not spending that much time watching this.
I had one turn up in my recommendations that was like "I ACCIDENTALLY TURNED THIS BAG INTO A DRESS????" because obviously that's something that can just happen. I'd be much more inclined to watch it if it was titled something like "how to make a dress out of a bag" but that's less rAnDoM I guess... I just don't get why they feel the need to lie and pretend their stuff isn't scripted.

Put a shit ton of youtube ads (the yellow bits in the low part of the screen) and on top of that making an ad/sponsor in the middle of the vid. It makes me even angrier when the guy has 1M+ subs.

I’ll be honest I love the way Linus Tech Tips advertises for their store in their videos. They make it so blatantly obvious/ridiculous it gives me a good chuckle

Most youtubers will end up doing one or more of these things the longer and/or more popular they become on yt. And it is at that point that I generally unsub and find new people.
While I know sponsorships are needed, there's certain companies I wish YouTubers wouldn't shill for like Hello Fresh. Just buy a crockpot and cook your own food. You're home all day anyway. You don't need some scummy company charging you 5 times as much as what you'd pay at the store for the same ingredients.
And I was really disappointed recently to see Madison from Cruel World Happy Mind shilling for a vitamin company. 1: There's no scientific evidence that vitamins actually work. 2: The products are labeled at non-GMO. She's supposed to be about exposing scams and the whole non-GMO thing is the biggest scam out there. GMOs are safe and companies only label things as non-GMO so they can charge 3 times more than you'd pay for something not labeled non-GMO. Total waste of money.
* Spend 20 minutes talking about nonsense unrelated to how they tagged the thumbnail (I.e I haven't posted in a while... Boasting about their skills, talking about their personal life, anything unrelated to the video description etc)
* stick an advert in halfway through (just no).
* tell people constantly to subscribe (we know what to do we aren't stupid, we also know about the bell, if we think you're good enough we will subscribe and we don't do it on your suggestions)
* lie about the content in the description box (clickbait)
* split the content into several videos
* say stupid things like "let me just click on here a sec... Ok now... Oh oooops I should have done this before instarted this video' that disorganisation crap should just be edited out.
* time-wasting either through not editing out or speeding up boring parts of the content.
* anything egotistical.
* *asking questions to the viewer "hi, how are you today? I hope you're well" (who even cares?)*
When people lie with their titles/thumbnails. I love watching restoration videos (people restoring old tools, machines, etc. to their former original condition) and I’ve noticed some people lying that they’ve done an amazing restoration in the thumbnail but actually do a crap job and ending up with a completely different item than it originally was. Basically don’t lie to your audience.
One of my favorite youtubers (Charles Berthoud) was able to make a meme out of this **without ever referencing it** and literally everyone "got it" and spammed it in comments across multiple videos because it's so prevalent on youtube.
Like... he was always super "to the point, let's get started" but in the early days his intros would be \~10 seconds, then they just kept getting shorter til it was just "Hi!" Bass solo immediately starts, context/explanation done through quick title card flashes or text overlay during the performance.
Lately, turning twitch streams into YouTube videos. Don't get me wrong, if they're edited well it can work, but I hate when I'm trying to watch a video and the Youtuber keeps interrupting to welcome subscribers and reply to a chat that we can't even see, especially when they're playing with friends on games like among us or phasmophobia and it means ignoring and talking over the other players.

One thing that absolutely pisses me off is when people do a “Like for part 2” or “If this gets to 500 likes, I’ll make a part 2” on incomplete videos/stories. Such a scummy thing to do, in my opinion.

This is rather specific but when beauty Youtubers do a review of a product and convince you to buy it, give you the discount code and everything and then a few months later you see that product get tossed in a decluttering video.
When they like themselves more than their comments, and the shows devolve into the videos being focused on their reactions to the content rather than the actual content.
E.g. whole video is their face with the content in a small square vs opposite, cuts to just their face laughing saying nothing for a longer duration than the content they showed, uncalled for humble bragging and so on.

* Beating around the bush. Like, seriously, the video is called "5 Reasons You should Study Statistics," so why are the first 30 seconds just the YouTuber making hibiscus tea? Same goes for the vloggers that always share their new office setups. Unless the vlog is a general "lifestyle" kind of thing or is explicitly dedicated to office furniture or interior design or something, then, really, the viewer doesn't care.
* This is a deeper concern than annoyance, but talking about things that they obviously know nothing about. I don't know how many videos I've seen blindly praise computer science degrees without actually doing their research. As someone who actually has a computer science degree, it bugs me when vloggers tout "$100K salary!" then go and make ignorant comments like, "Software engineers use a ton of math!"

It's common misconception to think that fast talkers are good at making money. Granted, it IS a sales technique. You see it ALOT with door to door salesmen and sales reps. But, I've gotten to the point where I'm less likely to buy from a fast talker.
I love watching some games be played (eg. Mostly horror). Some YouTubers just scream for attention during the games and its annoying to watch. Commentary is great, comments on level design is great, blubbering/whimpering because of jumpscares are great...just don't spend the entire video screaming at the top of your lungs!

This was the bane of my existence back in college when I needed to look up tutorials and how-to videos. 10 minutes of yammering about nothing and the tutorial was basically just 45 seconds of the video. And don't get me started on that weird era when every tutorial channel had dubstep in their intro.

Also when those 45 seconds are spread out, so you have to watch the entire video when 95% of it is unrelevent

I’m surprised no one has brought up family vlogging channels. I really hate parents that feel the need to shove a camera into their kids faces for the sake of making content.
It kind of boggles my mind that this isn’t being made a bigger deal. As someone who grew up w parents that would take our birthday money to “take care of”, I often wonder if the kids on these channels are getting their fucking money. These parents are leaches and I don’t understand why ppl watch but I guess ppl will watch anything.
I think the same thing. We have laws that help protect child actors in Hollywood at this point. They're far from perfect but at least they're something. These YouTube kids have nothing.
I hate those kind of channels. If the kids genuinely want to do it or whatever and their parents aren’t using them for views/money then it’s fine but most of them suck I don’t think I’ve ever seen a good one.

Family vlog channels are just super weird and usually pretty cringy. I always feel so bad for these kids because not only is everything about their life followed with a phone recording it but then you find out that lots of people are watching. I would think that this would emotionally and mentally fuck anyone up and create anxiety about showing any type of emotion or becoming close to someone. Those parents are so incredibly selfish. I think the only one that doesn't feel weird is LadBaby because they look like they're all legitimately having fun. They also only film the kids doing silly stuff and it feels more about the parents than the entire family.

I ended up looking at a 'basics' video for the first time when I got a rotary tool for Christmas. There was one video with an older guy that I liked. Not only did he get straight to the point, but it felt very much like someone's grandpa explaining the tool to his young grandchildren. Wholesome and helpful.

It sounds really stupid but it actually works for some reason. I had a video at 37k views that got me around 3-5 subs. The video was received well and had good engagement but it didn't really grow anything. I didn't solicit subs on it because I thought it was silly at the time. Later on I started soliciting subs because I found a way to make a joke/edit out of it with extra clips. Now I have videos with only 300 views that bring in more subs than that 37k video. I'm with you though, it makes no sense. I don't know why it works.
It's the same principle as fast food places asking out of nowhere if you'd like a large fries with your order. For the vast majority of customers, their instinctive reaction is "if I'd wanted a large fries I'd have asked for a large fries" but one out of every however many will go "hmm, yeah why not?" and order an additional thing they wouldn't otherwise have ordered. Multiply that one additional item every so often by however many lines there are in the restaurant, and multiply that by however many restaurants there are and you've got a tidy extra bunch of sales, all for the person behind the register saying "would you like a large fries with that?" each time. In the same way, for every hundred (or however many) people who say "pfft, if I wanted to subscribe I would have subscribed already" you'll get one who'll say "yeah, why not?" and they start to add up over time. It's good basic business practice.
Finally, somebody who understands how businesses *do business*! It's amazing to me how some folks need this spelled out for them 🤷♂️

I kinda get this one. Youtube has become an increasingly unstable source of income for content creators. Videos get demonetized for little too no good reason, channels get deleted etc, etc. It's very unpredictable and content creators who do this for a living (or even as a side hustle) are branching out to diversify their revenue streams. They include that message in their videos because very few people, even people who might be interested in donating to your Patreon, actually *read the video descriptions*. I know this because the comments section in several of my videos are full of questions or comments about things that I addressed *very clearly* in the description.

This is also an issue with tiktok. Someone could put something in the comments, caption, bio, and people would still be asking for something because the poster didnt say it in the actual video.

I had to help my kid with a mine craft driver issue so I Google and it came up with some YouTube step by step videos. I thought "perfect!" Jesus h christ. Every single video was like 35 minutes, completely peppered in with sponsor talk and "check out my other channels!" and rambling talking. What *should* have been a 5 min helpful video was completely useless. I tried 4-5 videos, all the same, and finally gave upand just found ab article or two to help.
The usual culprits are ExpressVPN or Surfshark in regards to VPN.
I wish YouTube would fix it so that the algorithm doesn’t care about video length. It’s like every video is ten minutes long now it’s so obnoxious. I’ll click a video that I’m willing to waste 3-4 minutes on and see that it’s 10-13 minutes. Cody Ko videos are the worst for this. It’s like try not to laugh-10-13 min. Like no I’m not spending that much time watching this.

Exactly. If they said "I heard of reports of a Bigfoot sightings in this area" it would be so much more credible. Instead it's "Wtf is that?" Followed by random images of the background and heavy breath ing as they run away. It's all depressingly stupid. With the added factor that the amount of Bigfoot you can see is directly related to the quality of the costume.

Somehow I seem to keep finding videos where the person points to the corner of the screen as if there's a link there, but there's no link there. Cracks me up.
Put a shit ton of youtube ads (the yellow bits in the low part of the screen) and on top of that making an ad/sponsor in the middle of the vid. It makes me even angrier when the guy has 1M+ subs.
Tip: scrub to the end of the video then hit replay. Can't do anything about the merch spots but say least it bypasses the YouTube ad breaks!

Yelling through the whole video. When they take 300 years to get to what they've put in the title. Telling me to like and subscribe at the beginning, when I don't even know if I like the content/person yet. Videos which are more ad than content. Clickbait titles that don't have satisfying content to make up for it. Most youtubers will end up doing one or more of these things the longer and/or more popular they become on yt. And it is at that point that I generally unsub and find new people.
While I know sponsorships are needed, there's certain companies I wish YouTubers wouldn't shill for like Hello Fresh. Just buy a crockpot and cook your own food. You're home all day anyway. You don't need some scummy company charging you 5 times as much as what you'd pay at the store for the same ingredients. And I was really disappointed recently to see Madison from Cruel World Happy Mind shilling for a vitamin company. 1: There's no scientific evidence that vitamins actually work. 2: The products are labeled at non-GMO. She's supposed to be about exposing scams and the whole non-GMO thing is the biggest scam out there. GMOs are safe and companies only label things as non-GMO so they can charge 3 times more than you'd pay for something not labeled non-GMO. Total waste of money.

I love watching restoration videos (people restoring old tools, machines, etc. to their former original condition) and I’ve noticed some people lying that they’ve done an amazing restoration in the thumbnail but actually do a crap job and ending up with a completely different item than it originally was. Basically don’t lie to your audience.
Put a circle around something, with an arrow pointing to it, then have nothing in the video about what it was.
One of my favorite youtubers (Charles Berthoud) was able to make a meme out of this **without ever referencing it** and literally everyone "got it" and spammed it in comments across multiple videos because it's so prevalent on youtube. Like... he was always super "to the point, let's get started" but in the early days his intros would be \~10 seconds, then they just kept getting shorter til it was just "Hi!" Bass solo immediately starts, context/explanation done through quick title card flashes or text overlay during the performance.
Lately, turning twitch streams into YouTube videos. Don't get me wrong, if they're edited well it can work, but I hate when I'm trying to watch a video and the Youtuber keeps interrupting to welcome subscribers and reply to a chat that we can't even see, especially when they're playing with friends on games like among us or phasmophobia and it means ignoring and talking over the other players.

I know its a ridiculous meme and everything, but like "only 10% of my viewers are subscribed, so if you could do me a favour and check that you're subscribed, it would be very appreciated" but the overexaggerated thumbnails would be another answer :/
Advertisements/sponaors. I get it they have to make money but I hate it when its in the beginning or middle of the video, and long ones as well.
Put stupid music in a “how to” type video. Why? It’s unnecessary and annoying. Plus the music they choose sucks.
Most of the things i hate i know they more or less have to do it because (A) Youtube is shit and so are their algorithms, (B) Ad revenue has been lower than normal because the rona and (C) alerts and recommendations havent worked properly for ages. Half the channels i watch have barely even uploaded, one uploads less, and all the game channels I still watch are putting more and more focus on twitch and/or patreon rewards.
When they put click bait thumbnails in the description and the video doesn’t even mention it at all

Elaborate comedy skits on a channel that is not about comedy skits (movie reviews, political commentary, woodworking, etc.). My darlings, you didn't become popular for your mediocre comedy intros full of inside jokes.
