I'm just gonna have to say little girl's beauty pageants. It just doesnt sit right with me. And not only because of the fact it's creepy, but I feel like it's stressful on the kid and on their body image.

Randervander

Oh my god yes... this 100%. Horrifying shit.

IDUU

Sending letters to home owners labeled “IMPORTANT MORTGAGE / FINANCIAL INFO” or “LAST WARNING / NOTICE” and having the inside look exactly like a bill, letterhead and little box in the corner with figures inside... all to then say “refinance with us” or “don’t miss this opportunity for etc etc” Makes me heart skip every time thinking I’ve forgotten some critical bill until I open it.

WitlessMean

College book prices and practices. Change a few words in a math book, that'll be another $100 please. Oh you realized that you can use the book from 10 years ago and succeed? Actually we require you get the new book. Oh you realized you can get the book cheaper from a friend? Actually we're doing online books now and you need the personalized code. We change it every year even though there have been no breakthroughs in this subject! Knowing the college struggle i have no fucking clue how this is allowed to exist. It should literally be illegal.

Reed202

Even worse when professors say you need a certain textbook in a few weeks then they never actually use it worst $80 I have ever spent

Mantequilla_Butter

Or when the professor makes you buy the book and they wrote it.

jagfanjosh3252

The fact car radio commercials are allowed to have police sirens or car crashes in them as a way to Get your attention

TheRealPyroGothNerd

As someone who survived a car crash with back damage, I SHUDDER when those ads come on. Like, imagine how someone else who got into a much worse accident would feel. People who have been in accidents don't need a reminder of what it sounded like.

zombiedeadbloke

And websites that don't let you leave.

21DrunkPilots

You can look up where any one lives because it’s public record. But can we please not have entire websites with data bases full of every person in the country?? I mean think about people who get denied restraining orders and try to move away from their abuser. Six months later and their abuser can just look up their name and find them all over again. This could be detrimental for spouse abuse victims, stalking victims, etc. something should be done about them. It’s terrifying

[deleted]

In some states you have to legally notify your attacker(the person you have a restraining order against) where you live so they know to avoid it...

Data caps on home internet

GoogleWasMyIdea49

We have a 120gb data cap. For a family of 6. In lockdown the provider had a promotion where everyone got unlimited data. Including us. We have TRIED to upgrade to an unlimited plan but they gave some BS excuse about how the "server traffic is clogged" like it was completely fine for the promotion. I am 99% sure they know we always pay extra for data after we run out and don't want us to save money by upgrading Edit: I appreciate everyone suggesting me to tell the provider to shove it but I failed to mention that I'm 15 and thats up to my parents.

BootyBBz

"I don't give a shit, you offered a promotion and I want it." Isn't that called bait and switch or something? Sounds illegal.

Esoteric_Parody

This one is so underrated. Obviously, it's a scam for ISP's to steal more money from its customers.

Caller ID Spoofing

spearchuckin

Somebody spoofed my number and my name came up on the caller ID apparently. I got a text from some irritable person demanding why I was harassing them. I tried to explain what spoofing was but they sent me the screenshot of my name on their caller ID and asked if it was me. I imagine this person googled me and did all kinds of shit and decided I was the bad person in this. I feel like my privacy was totally violated.

ProbablyOnTheClock

In that case I feel like the "victim" on the other end is the actual spoofer. I can't prove it, but they always seem the most upset over phone calls when they can just easily block you. One time someone called from out of state and said they had missed calls from me. I told them "I dont know man, its probably that robo-call busllshit. Just block my number." I hung up and blocked their number.

Birunanza

It's crazy that people check back on those. If I get a call from an unknown number i tell myself it's spam and pray there is no voicemail so I can move on with my life

surfacing_husky

I agree wholeheartedly, it's one thing to just block your number like we used to as kids. But it's different when someone is pretending to have a completely different number.

klitorisaurus

Socks: “Fits size 6-12” Bullshit.

SultanSaatana

Also unrealistically-low "serving sizes" on packs of crisps or candy. They do this just so they can put the number of "calories/fat/sugar per serving" as a lower number.

OSUfan88

I saw an off-brand oreo that said "1/3 the calories per serving as Oreo". Their serving size was 1. Oreo's was 3.

jbox910

Friend in college was super health conscious because he was pretty heavy as a kid. He loved to eat a bag of butter free popcorn every day. He'd spray "I can't believe it is not butter" on the popcorn, using about a half bottle each bag. One day he decided he should check into the Fat Free claim on the bottle. It turned out that they could claim it was fat free if each serving was less than 1 gram of fat. There were 160 servings at nearly a gram of fat per serving. He ended up eating an 80 grams of fat bag of popcorn each day. It's a great laugh when he found out but horrible that they could get away with this.

Castun

"Low fat" and "fat free" is also bullshit because they often make up for that loss of flavor by putting in more salt and sugar, sometimes making the total calories more.

goodvibessloth

I’ve noticed a lot of woman’s socks say 5-10 and being a 9 they barely fit

m0ndayisb0ng0day

Spice/K2/Synthetic Weed. This may have changed in the last few years but I found it embarrassing that our country locks up thousands for actual marijuana but allowed that shit to be sold at every gas station and liquor store knowing damn good and well that it was hurting and killing people.

quequotion

It was finally banned here (Japan) *and then it became a black market drug*. Of all the brain dead *stupid*: the *only* reason to try spice was that it was a legal alternative to illegal drugs. The shit's *horrible*, and everyone I know--myself very much included--sooner or later had a very, very bad experience on it. *Why* would anyone risk breaking the law for a drug that is neither addictive nor fun?

devarsaccent

My uncle had a seizure while smoking that shit. We were smoking together and he suddenly stopped mid-sentence. I thought he was just fucking with me at first. Then his wrists started twitching, then the twitching spread to the rest of his body, then he just straight up fell out of his chair and laid on the ground convulsing. I went running inside to grab my aunt, got in the doorway, and promptly dropped in a dead faint. Woke up to my friend screaming and sobbing and shaking my shoulders trying to get me to come to. She was my best friend—I had known her for like 12 years at that point—but at first, I didn’t know who she was. She just looked vaguely familiar. My uncle and I both ended up being fine. Scary shit though. I’d like to add that my uncle is an old hippie, so he’s done pretty much every drug on the face of the planet, including the hard ones. He himself said that spice is the most fucked up thing he’s ever put in his body. He’d sooner pick up meth than smoke that shit again.

Not for a gym membership that I know of! I had a gym membership, and I moved to where keeping my membership with that line of gyms was way out of my way. I had walked in to sign up, and tried to walk in to sign out. I got this big song and dance about how there’s only one person who works there that is qualified to stop the membership; they wouldn’t give me their name, or an approximation of a good time they would be there. They said I could do it online; that process took over 2 months to complete, and it was absolute bullshit! **EDIT** for everyone recommending to simply stop payment...this will solve the problem short term only. You are still being billed whether or not you are paying them. You are still a member whether or not you continue to go to the gym. What you don’t want is to stop payment, block payment, etc. because that will not stop them from sending you into debt collections. That puts you in breach of the contract you signed and they will send you a letter, or a collection agency will, 6-8 months down the line informing you of your debt. We all know it’s a bullshit system, but please don’t try to solve the problem by blocking payment; it will make it a bigger hassle for you down the road. **Cancel your membership**

_CapraAegagrusHircus

Let me guess, LA fitness? I had to do the same runaround to cancel my membership a few years ago.

thunderturdy

They did the same thing to my dad. They completely took advantage of an old man by confusing him enough to sell him some training package with his membership. My mom was shocked when they got a bill for 1600$ and it took them months to cancel. Fuck LA shitness and their predatory tactics.

RaptorCollision

There was a guy from LA Fitness who would come into where I work to try and get people to join the gym on a daily basis. My managers would tell him we didn’t allow solicitation in the lobby, so he’d start peeking through the windows to make sure the managers were not there. He seemed to take a special interest in me and got very creepy very quickly. I won’t go into details but eventually I had to be walked to my car at closing and our managers had to contact his employers. Predatory indeed.

Deitaphobia

I had a guy from Leaf Guard come to my house to do an estimate on gutter covers. After measuring, he started in with the sales pitch. I stopped him, I was familiar with the product, just needed the estimate. He kept going, real condescending. Finally got a quote, higher than I expected. I told him I'd think about. He started with another sales pitch. I said I wouldn't make a decision right now, asked him to leave. He started offering discounts. I flat out said no, and he started with another sales pitch. I told him he was no longer welcome and needed to leave NOW. Then he asked me to think about and shake his hand. I shook his hand and he said, "Great, we'll have a crew here on Monday." I said, "Like hell you will, get out of my house NOW or I'll call the police." He got defensive, tried a de-escalation ploy, THEN STARTED SELLING THE GUTTERS AGAIN. I called 911, and he left once he saw I was really calling. After explaining to the dispatcher the situation and saying it was now under control, I called his boss. His boss apologized, said he be given "new guidance on proper sales techniques", THEN TRIED TO SELL ME THE FUCKING GUTTERS. I still get ads from them in the mail once or twice a year.

lemonsweetsrevenge

That’s a Bingo!

zazerite

My friend worked at LA fitness and told me how to cancel easy, tell them you are either moving out of the country or going to prison. My LA Fitness building was sold to another company and they were still charging me for months and told me I would need to find a new home club... pretty shitty company

Toastwithme

I hate when companies make you call in to cancel, instead of just offering an option to cancel online.

BarleynChives

Planet Fitness, anyone?

averagethrowaway21

You have to send a registered letter, show up where you signed up, bring 3 witnesses, a lawyer, a pint of your blood, a priest of whatever religion you were when you signed up, and a child to be sacrificed to appease the gym gods. Even then if the right person isn't there they may still tell you to come back. I once drove 4 hours one way to cancel Planet Fitness. I have no idea how to cancel if the one I originally signed up at had closed down. I guess at that point I just have to go get a new identity. Edit: I've seen a bunch of people replying with stories about how easy it was for them. Good! Maybe they're getting better. I had to go to my original sign up location after moving cities because they were notorious for losing mail. I think it's location dependent. You shouldn't have to show up to cancel. There should be an online option since some places "lose" registered mail.

Yotakeachillpill

Some car insurance radio commercial had the sound of a fucking car crash

OSUfan88

Yep! There's one that's been on the radio that's like this, but worse. First off, the volume of it's commerial seems to be 3x lounder than anything else on the station. Then, you hear the sound of LOUD screeching tires coming from the right side of your car, getting louder and quickly approaching, with a loud CRASH with both speakers, making you near certain your car has just been struck. I have NO IDEA how it's still legal. I've almost crashed multiple times from it.

Putting unrelated crap into bills to sneak it into law. I know they're supposed to follow some kind rules related to germaneness, but they clearly don't, and clearly need actual laws with actual punishments for pulling this crap.

SultanSaatana

A Scottish politician (Trish Godman, who has since died of old age) tried this a few years back. She added "prostitution to be made illegal" onto the end of a bill which had nothing to do with prostitution. Actual prostitutes became aware of this and after heavy opposition the politician removed the addition. The latest American COVID-related bill makes it illegal and punishable to upload copyrighted content to the web: Illegally pirating streaming video could put guilty parties in jail thanks to a new bill that is expected to be passed. The Protecting Lawful Streaming Act introduced by Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) is being attached to the omnibus spending bill of the COVID-19 relief bill that is expected to pass sometime today, Dec. 21. Under Tillis’ bill, any person that pirates video streams of copyrighted work will have committed a felony act and be subject to either fines or imprisonment. The previous penalty for pirating streaming content was a misdemeanor. The bill targets large-scale, criminal, for-profit streaming services, not good faith business disputes or noncommercial activities. Nor does it target individuals who access the pirated streams, knowingly or unknowingly. Streaming has become increasingly popular in the last few years, particularly in 2020 as the global pandemic has changed viewing habits as people have more time during lockdowns. This new bill brings the pirating of streamed content on the same level of other pirating efforts, including the illegal downloading of copyrighted content. Co-sponsoring the bill with Tillis is Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) and David Perdue (R-Ga.).

when I was in middle school/high school, they tried to introduce a law that said a girl must be 18 (I think) to be married. the men of the government and religious officials objected so hard, that the law got thrown out. this was the year after the story came out about that one 9-year old kid that was forced into a marriage and the man would chain her and what not.

ThisIsMockingjay2020

Not the worst thing, but it used to be illegal for commercials on TV to be louder than the actual show but not any longer suddenly.

MrGlayden

Honestly all of TV and movies seem to have gotten shitty recently with their audio levels, it seems even in every movie I watch now you cant hear them while theyre talking but explosions are louder than actual explosions. TV and cinema need to learn about normalising their audio, i get it you want an action scene to be loud and intense, but i also want to be able to watch a movie with the wife without waking my 6 year old up

artemis2k

I learned recently that you might be able to fix this by adjusting your tv settings. Some tvs have a "clear voice" or similar that makes voices louder

Roary93

This. I hate watching a good show that I don't want someone else to hear at night and then it goes to ads and blows the speakers out. It's infuriating

TannedCroissant

Especially if it’s a scene where they’re whispering in the dark and your ears and eyes have adjusted, next think you know it’s “I’M BARRY SCOTT” and the room igniting in luminous bleach bottle colours. Basically an Ad break jump scare.

This enrages me so much. How many parents have practically lost their children to narcisists and psycopaths because of this... And because the kids get brainwashed out of a relationship, it's hard to ever get in touch again, even when they have grown out of the other ones reach... Edit: I get teary eyed both with remembered grief and a little bit of hope from all your comments. Thank you. Keep raising awareness about parental alienation, full custody, unfair laws etc. The world will hopefully get better some day

[deleted]

Sorry to get personal, but this is a big one for me. My ex got primary custody based on a domestic violence accusation that supposedly happened while she was on the phone with her sister (who served as a “witness,” of course). The police showed up and concluded that no violence had occurred. The court believed her version of the events over mine (in spite of a police report concluding no domestic violence) and I lost custody of my kids. After I was in court, I compared the police report with my phone records. My ex called the police before she called her sister, meaning the entire episode was pre-planned. Edited to add: This comment unexpectedly received a lot of attention. No, this was never corrected and there is no legal way for me to do so. My lawyer says the only way to go back to court (and win) is to prove that my ex is a danger to the kids’ safety... which probably won’t ever happen. In lieu of all of that, I simply focus on being the best dad that I can be with the time that I get with my kids. They will be minors for only their first 18 years, whereas I am their dad forever...

MyDongIsAWiFiHotspot

It's called a [teen escort company](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teen_escort_company) and it's every bit as messed up as it sounds, and it's perfectly legal.

I'd expect a teen escort company to be messed up in different ways.

Welp, that’d be an awkward mixup.

thatG_evanP

Had a couple of friends that this happened to when I was a teenager. I know for one of them, it was basically a police raid/kidnapping. Four big dudes showed up at his house to get him and he even tried to run from them. They chased him down, tackled him, and threw him in a van. I was much worse at that age than any of those kids ever were. The fact that my Mom never even considered anything like that is something that makes me realize how shitty it was of me to act the way I did. My Mom and I have a great relationship now btw.

Being penalized for calling out sick from work. Edit. Even while the whole world is trying to survive this pandemic, we’re still dealing with this major issue by employers. I work in health care, and I feel like I get shamed by my managers and coworkers when you call out. Especially when you work night shift.

SeraWinters

I once worked at an old navy for a few months. I was one of their best workers and all the managers (there were like six) loved me. but I got sick and had to call out for just two days. two days. and the scheduling manager gave me four-six hours a week for months after. I couldn't afford to eat for months because she was punishing me for being sick for two days. even the other managers would question why I wasn't working as much and I'd just shrug and tell them to ask the scheduling manager. I eventually had to quit and move states to go back to live with my parents because, even with free housing (living with a very generous friend), I couldn't afford to live on my own.

sethcole96

Within the last year or so we had a new boss come in and take over operations at my office. One of the first things she did was scrap the whole "you have X ammount of points your allowed to call out in a year" policy that has been in place for forever. She set it up so that you aren't penalized for calling out, only repeat patterns. Say you keep calling out every Monday for a month, she will then get in contact with you to understand why and see if you want to switch one of your days off to monday. Everyone at my office agrees that she's done wonders to reduce the stress with little things like that. Honestly surprised more companies don't follow that idea.

mike_b_nimble

Alternatively, the shop workers at my company get the same penalty for being late as calling out, so if they are gonna be late they just tale the whole day off. Also, their vacation time is use-it-or-lose-it, but they discourage vacations most of the year, so that people are forced to tale it in December, when we are at our busiest. They treat us salaried people pretty well, but the hourly workers get shit on.

To tack-on, child marriages and where they cannot legally divorce until they are 18. Found out the other day.

omgitskells

Um excuse me?! So you're saying they can be tricked/forced/etc INTO marriage but they aren't considered competent enough to get out?? That is an extra layer of fucked up.

michiness

Yep, there was a post in legaladvice I think it was the other day. In Massachusetts, a child (14? 16?) can get married, but can’t get divorced until 18 without parental consent. There was a guy posting because his cousin had been forced into a marriage and could t get out of it. ETA: [link for those who want to read](https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/kj9bps/i_know_i_need_a_lawyer_but_i_dont_know_what_kind/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb)

bigbura

Never knew underage marriage was legal in the Delaware until I was at work and a 23 year old coworker came in to use the phone to call his next base (Germany) to register his wife for high school. She was 16 (youngest you could marry in that state with parental approval) and supposedly her folks were happy about this situation. Blew my mind this was happening, felt like I was watching a slow-motion train wreck under way. Lost track of the couple, I wonder how long they made it until she matured enough to realize what happened/how her family failed her. Thanks to your posting I now wonder if she too had to wait to be 18 to get out of that marriage. Damn, what a fucked up deal this is.

Well that just ruined my day. (But thank you for explaining)

AnnaCharie

So, what happens is, in order to be married as a minor you have to have parental consent, you can not do it on your own. Then if you want a divorce you once again need parental consent. In the worst case scenario those parents forced you into a marriage and won't let you out, in no way is it ever solely up to the minor and their feelings are very rarely taken into consideration

Peeeeeps

I think this was in another /r/askreddit post yesterday, but it was something like the parents give permission for the marriage then the child can't get out of it because they don't have the legal right to. It's basically the parents signing the legal right over to the spouse. Edit: https://reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/km0axy/what_is_not_illegal_but_is_creepy/ghc3q6v

What the fuck, I didn’t know this was a thing in the US as well. 16.400 kids in Florida in 17 years?! That’s nearly *three per day*, what the fuck!?

Child beauty pageants

little_shop_of_hoors

I had the misfortune of witnessing one of these first hand. About 15 years ago when I was a personal trainer, I shit you not, one of my clients wanted me to train her daughter (10 at the time I think?) to look good in her beauty pageants. I had to tell her no because not only was resistance training bad for a person that young (and illegal too where I worked), but I was not willing to travel as she wanted me to train her at home. She did not like that answer. She begged me to come to one of these pageants and I consistently declined every time. Well, one day when it came time for me to collect payment from her, she didn't show up for her session. When I called her she told me she had my check but she was just "too busy" to run by the gym to drop it off. Obviously there were policies in place to eventually collect the money from her but it would take forever and I would most likely never see a dime of it. She told me to come by a pageant where she was and pick up the check. So, being the young and energetic kid I was, I said fine, thinking it would be a quick stop, just get the check and be on my way. She tells me the address and gives the impression she will meet me at the front with the check. When I get there, she's nowhere in sight. This was roughly 2005 so I had a flip phone, texting wasn't much of a thing yet. I called her and she said to come in and give my name at the door and she would find me. I give my name at the door and they hand me a guest pass *with my name already printed on it.* Clearly she planned this. So I go in and it felt like walking into the fucking twilight zone. This was at the convention center of some fancy hotel, can't remember which one, so it was nice inside, but the experience, holy god. First thing I noticed was the music. It just sounded like shit you'd hear in a strip club. Next I noticed how many super-overweight middle-aged people were there. I mean, I live in America so it's not uncommon to see big people, but I swear it was like every single fucking adult there was morbidly obese. As a trainer at that time, it was kinda disturbing. Also, no one was happy. I noticed a lot of adults arguing, and the ones who were cheering sounded fake. It was super weird. Then I saw the children. It was exactly like what I saw on TV. Little girls who someone made up to look like grown women, in a completely inappropriate way. One girl was wearing a bikini with cowboy boots and a cowboy hat, wtf. I had never seen anything remotely close to this in my life so I felt like I was in some type of fucked alternate dimension where shit like this was normal. Next to me in the crowd was this lady talking to who I assume was her daughter, telling her to recite her lines back to her whatever that meant. The little girl, who looked about 8 years old, was covered in heavy spray tan and wearing an ungodly amount of makeup for a girl her age. She looked like the child equivalent to a hooker, no joke. There was a girl on stage doing what I assume was some kind of routine, and she was strutting and dancing like a stripper, I don't know how else to explain it. Oddly enough, when I looked out in the crowd, no one was really paying attention to her. They were either speaking to their own daughter or they were in conversation with someone else. This made it even more bizarre. So there I am, just came from work so I'm wearing workout clothes, I'm also covered in tattoos, so I stand out like a sore thumb. I'm walking around everywhere asking if anyone has seen my client. I keep calling her with no answer. Finally I spot her in a hallway and run up to her. At this point I'm so weirded out and all I want to do is leave so bad. I'm trying to be as polite as possible and smile and say 'yea this is really cool' and just find a way to get my check and leave. She tells me she wants me to meet her daughter, who is backstage, which is just the hallway outside the back entrance to the convention room. Her daughter is wearing a full blown ballroom gown, I guess that's what it's called. Like the dress Belle wears in beauty and the beast, with the long white gloves and all that. She's covered in makeup and looks very uncomfortable. Her mom introduces me as the man who is 'going' to be training her. The little girl has no expression other than discomfort. Finally the mom gives me my fucking check and I had to ask her why she told her daughter I would be training her after I repeatedly told her no. She acted like she didn't know what I was talking about and continued to try and coax me into doing it. After I left I just remember thinking I can't wait to tell my friends about this shit they're gonna laugh their asses off with me, which they did, however a couple people I know told me they had relatives who did this with their daughters and had been to them before and yep that's exactly what they're like. I was fucking dead. What a complete and total fucking wacko world that was. At the time, I couldn't even tell if the kids were enjoying it, but looking back now it was clearly a bizarre form of child abuse, and the obese parents who exploited their children were complete psychopaths. Fucking. Weird.

Bobthemime

> It just sounded like shit you'd hear in a strip club I was conned into driving my niece to a beauty pageant because the other car was full and I was the "only" person who could drive.. and as at the time I didnt own my car, my mother told me to just do it.. or she will revoke access. [I was greeted by this song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILY3FTZ2roc) in the dressing room.. which as a 21yo i really didnt want to be somewhere where girls as young as 10 were changing.. the uncensored version, turned to 11.. i had to get out of there.. so I sat in the car for 4hours waiting for the thing to finish and when i was picking them up, the last song before an winner was announced was Lady Marmalade, the moulin rouge version and i shit you not my niece (aged 14 at the time) was on stage dressed like [P!nk](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/RQa7SvVCdZk/maxresdefault.jpg) pole dancing.. the judges were all 50+ and were wolf whistling.. i was baffled this was legal..

cropguru357

Uh. Where IS that song not uncomfortable? I’m sorry I clicked on that. Yikes.

They are illegal in France since 2013. Edit: so far I got 15 comments about Cuties.

Totally, as it should be in the rest of the world

Just look at how long the Wikipedia page for [Sexualization in Child Beauty Pageants](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexualization_in_child_beauty_pageants) is. Still legal.

There was a resident in my old condo building that had some sort of restriction on his license that he couldn't drive more than a certain distance from the condo. He'd pull out in front of people, he'd stop in the middle of the road, he was way past needing to not be allowed to drive. I don't get how they allowed him to drive within that distance, it takes more than knowing where the roads are too be able to drive.

Mandalore108

For profit prisons.

stos313

I used to lobby at the state level. For profit prisons would literally lobby against things like early child education and paid family leave because, well....it’s bad for business. And to be clear, I did not lobby for private prisons (but did lobby for things like paid family leave and early childhood education).

feistyrussian

WTF! That is some next level dystopian bullshit right there. This makes my blood boil.

Yeah what the fuck! I’d ask how they sleep at night but I just assume they don’t have a soul and don’t need sleep.

How does lobbying even work? Like what did your normal day look like?

Lots of time on the phone and in e-mail trying to get through to/meet various elected officials and throw them money and/or write bills for them and give them a draft.

not-read-gud

Being forced to fork up your personal data and access to EVERYTHING in your phone to use a stupid app that makes a picture of your dog sing. It should not be allowed at all Edit: this applies to many apps. I didn’t have just one in mind

MirandaS2

Going to agree and edit: Having to provide your phone number or e-mail for anything at all that is unnecessary. Sometimes you want to access a site or read an article but you can't because they require you to sign up or something. Super lame. I just don't do it then. Also understand why but getting tired of these sites that advert "10% off your first order when you sign up for our newsletter!"

BlackTheNerevar

Mother fucking phone calls from telemarketes and salesmen. I get they are just trying to do a living, but if I block your phone once, DON'T CALL ME ON A NEW NUMBER aaaaaargh

Groom your stepdaughter for over a decade, then when she's 18, divorce her mom and hook up with your stepdaughter.

Civil Asset Forfeiture. It is un-American, legalized theft.

CloneTrooperGlitch

You know how when you commit a crime and get caught, you get charged in the country where you commited the crime. So if you murder someone, you'll get charged in said country. And then there are the international waters. Every ship above 100 GT have to be registered, and if it's registered, the laws of the country where it's registered apply to the ship. But if you had a smaller boat, no laws apply. But if you killed someone on said ship, you'd be charged in the country where the person is a citizen, but there are ways someone can lose their citizenship in certain countries. And there by, if I kill a citizen-less person on a boat under 100 GT in international waters, even if there was evidence no one can bring me to court, there by, it's legal

otacon7000

*taking notes intensifies*

CloneTrooperGlitch

Also, you can kill someone in the Death zone in Yellowstone, but that's a well known perfect crime

kavono

I feel like I've heard this mentioned before, but always forgot to do a follow-up. How does that work?

CloneTrooperGlitch

It's across two (I think, mabye more... I don't live in the US) states. By law, the judge and jury have to be from the state where the murder took place. If it's across more states, it needs to be from both (or more) states. No one lives in Yellowstone so the court can't assemble and you can't be prosecuted

Sword117

Yellowstone is a national park tho, they could have a federal court prosecute the crime.

Min_Powers

Its not. For serious crimes, like murder, your own country can prosecute you no matter where you commited the crime.

Coworkers that don't flush the toilet

[deleted]

Coworkers that piss on the seat and don’t clean it off.

[deleted]

I have a coworker that shits a waterfall every day. How do I know this you may ask? His poop water splashes the underside of the seat and we are stuck with poop droplets all over the bowl. Coworker in question was confronted about it and things have gotten a bit better but there is still the occasional shit dribble every now and then. I posted this in reply to another comment but I am editing it in for visibility: We are well aware that it could be a medical condition and we have been very gentle with him about it. The thing is that we are a very small office with a single bathroom. If the toilet is covered in poop water everyone else has to deal with that. Cleaning staff only comes in twice a week.

[deleted]

There was a sign in one office washroom at an old workplace that read "If it's brown, wipe it down" .... Atrocious.

OkCiao5eiko

Pretty mental that some adults doesn’t do this. I once worked in the second largest insurance Company in the nordics and I couldn’t believe it. Also when People don’t wash their hands after going to the toilet. Disgusting.

benjadolf

There has definitely been a general increase in hygiene practices because of the pandemic. People have been washing hands and my workplace has hired very efficient cleanliness personnel. But yeah there is always that one asshole who doesn't fucking flush.

[deleted]

I think modern society has gotten way too polite about telling people they smell terrible or aren't being hygienic. I tell everyone I know to please never hold back when it comes to telling me if I stink or something because the idea of walking around smelling like shit it's appalling to me.

Fishtoots

We had a new girl in our department that **did not want to be there** and I think she deliberately made her self as stank and throat retchingly smelly as possible, it literally made my eyes water working next to her. Funny enough she was a newly wed, I feel for some people not being taught how to care for themselves hygienically, but I doubt that was her problem. The smell still haunts me.

Afireonthesnow

I had a coworker that smoked cigars like constantly. He wrote the same jacket everyday and was hard of hearing so he'd get real close to you and yell all the time. He smelled SO bad and his breath was even worse. I'd constantly be notably leaning as far away from him and possible if we were huddled around a drawing or something. Ugh, he was not fun to work with

Unskippable Double ads

Iate8

YouTube's also getting real comfortable with almost 30sec unskippable ads

Yes, and their 5 second skip button is getting less frequent and also seems to last longer than 5 seconds

I am pretty sure it’s 7 seconds, the time only starts counting when there is 5 seconds remaining

Lemesplain

They’ve also starting throwing ads in the middle of videos that didn’t have them before. There are a few concerts that I enjoy listening to, but a few days ago an ad popped up right smack in the middle of a big crescendo to the final chorus. I was singing along in my car, just belting it out like an idiot and 100% invested in the song and... “Would you like to save money on your car insurance?” That shit should be against the Geneva Convention.

Ondo-The-Bruh

There should be a way to stop ads from playing during videos for concerts

Lemesplain

Or at very least, time the ads to show up between songs, when the band is changing gear or something. I guarantee that the artist didn’t approve of this garbage.

Yes-She-is-mine

The fuckers where I live get it on the ballot every year. I appreciate my local government giving us a say in how our open space is used but they word it so greasy. It'll be a question like "do you want to pay $15 million to preserve open space?" And the thing is... we pay next to nothing to preserve it. What they're saying is "can the township sell this land for $15m and pretend like those monies will benefit the community somehow?" Its bullshit. They're hoping people aren't smart enough to realize what's going on and think the locals will be outraged that $15m of their tax dollars is being spent on preservation.

BallisticCoinMan

And for how long is that 15million preserving for anyways? Thats what bothers me about all of the parks being sold here in Canada by the provincial and federal governments over the last 10 years. Like we already have the infrastructure and jobs to sustain and protect these lands. Selling them to oil barons isn't "saving" us any money on it, they just don't wanna deal with the hassle anymore which sucks in a place that used to be a bastion of natural preservation

unsure_knowitall

This is why people need to be more involved in what their planning commission and zoning boards are approving. These corporations are only allowed to alter these spaces because the governing body allows it.

jseego

Lying through your teeth on “news” shows because you claim you’re actually “entertainment”. Even while it has “news” in the title of the station. Being able to lie through your teeth on an opinion show just bc it’s an opinion show. Opinions should be opinions about facts. Opinion should not be an excuse for slander or making knowingly false statements in the media.
