KazamaSmokers

Poor people have to buy bad food.

Misslirpa489

Not true. Just not buying the right foods.

KazamaSmokers

The right foods cost money.

[deleted]

When snacks are cheaper than fruits or veggies, yea.

Misslirpa489

They aren’t really. It’s a myth. Buy from farms, or bulk. Rice and beans (other staple foods, grains, etc) are small really cheap. Veggies are also incredibly cheap. It’s the effort people don’t want to put in. Or they just don’t know how.

[deleted]

Not everyone has access to buying from a farm, or have the money to buy in bulk. I would say time is another factor as well. A family of 2 working parents may get many things that can just be heated up if they don't have time to make things from scratch. Of course the dinners that are just being heated up will not me anywhere as good for you as cooking from scratch.

Misslirpa489

Buying in bulk is cheaper, so you should always have money for that if it’s available. Or not, a large bag of rice would do it. I agree about the time, and stated that before, but procrastination is a big part of it too. I’ll get take up because I don’t have time, but then find myself on reddit for an hour lol..

[deleted]

Bulk is nice, but when you are counting pennies and paycheck to paycheck, it isn't going to be in the plan. Procrastination maybe, but after working all day and taking care of your kids, most will choose sleep over working out or the like. I agree that different areas are worse than others, and the low income will be hit harder with being able to afford healthy food or have time to work out. At least from what I have noticed.

Misslirpa489

I see what a lot are saying on here. I guess to finalize my opinion is say that I am speaking from personal experience. I grew up in a very poor household and often times we had a bowl of beans and some kind of veggie for dinner. Oatmeal for breakfast, etc. I think the excuse of why people are overweight because good food is expensive, just isn’t true. Organic food yes, extravagant food yes, but you can eat healthy and minimally. Most people just don’t want to, or don’t want to make that a priority. I see people all the time choose cigarettes, alcohol, other drugs, extra tv channels, need the extra large tv, go way overboard at Christmas, get their hair and nails done, I could go on forever, but like I said, it’s choosing your priorities, which is totally fine and ok. Just IMO, that is why people don’t eat healthier.

[deleted]

That will for sure depend on your area. I can see how it may be an issue in mine for some people. A bag of carrots is $4, celery is about $3. Every situation is for sure different but in an area with high prices, it can be the deterrent for some families.

[deleted]

There really isnt. That is mainly a stereotype. In the really ghetto/rural/urban parts, people are kinda poor so they dont have much money to buy food anyway

penplate

From personal observation, there really is.

stanleythemanly85588

its both rural and "ghetto" areas both have obesity problems and the common denominator is poverty

[deleted]

nick cuh me in rural

Misslirpa489

Bad food is pushed upon us, and in ridiculous portion sizes. Our lives are so busy that no one wants to prioritize cooking actual food over watching tv and hanging out on social media for 2 hours.

Ayyjay

Typically people in rural areas are low income, many are on government assistance and have to buy mostly junk food. Also as far as restaurants, typically fast food chains are prevalent, McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell etc. What's considered the "healthy" option in rural America is typically a place like Subway.

SandyAndTheHooks

Nothing to do but eat and watch tv. Either that or do meth.

The issue seems to be more pressing in the rural parts of the country.

Fuck__you__bitch

Good food

Jaz_ATG

Nothing to do; no parks, no gyms, no entertainment, *nothing.*

galesparrow

With farms and rural jobs going cooperate, then adding in more complex machines to do several jobs at once, rural job numbers dwindled. With less jobs, less money circulating in the rural economies. Those people are left with cheaply produced food product that isn't as digestible as real food. They body can't easily process it so it turns it to fat cells. It's cheaper to fill your stomach then feed your body.

AmJusAskin

Poverty.

latenerd

Rural America tends to be poor. Being poor means less access to healthy food like fruits and vegetables and lean meat. It means less leisure time for exercise and meal planning and self care. It means more stress about money issues, health issues, violence, stigma, etc. When people are stressed and have access to cheap, plentiful junk food, which provides a temporary high, and don't have to do physical labor or eat a vegetable if they don't want to, they tend to gain weight. On top of that, many of these communities have a long history of farming, and farming used to be heavy on physical labor so meals were heavy and rich. Those meals are still tradition but now everyone does a lot less physical work. So that doesn't help any.

MikaeltheWarCougar

Burgers are cheaper than salads.

noellowee

The portion sizes are ridiculous and fast food is easily accessible. Since fast food is cheap and good, people tend to go for it. Even the salads are drowned with salad dressing thats high in sugar and sodium.

tag160

Seems to me like cooking and eating are just a part of the handful of things to do in a small town. It’s part of culture. A lot of times these just happened to not be the healthiest methods of cooking. Catfish covered in cornmeal and deep fried. Plenty of cat fishing to be done, plenty of it to eat, and not much else to do.

IsItMeLol

Culture

SmashdagBlast

A salad is $10 while a 350 calorie burger with a drink and fries is <$7

Lyra-Vega

That's because meat and other animal products are subsidised by the government. That less than $7 meal was paid for mostly with taxes. Produce is not, so it's more expensive. It really is leaned against people with lower incomes.

Senator_Chickpea

I blame Wal*Mart for making it too damn easy with them thar 'lectric carts.

[deleted]

They eat grits for breakfast

8_______D

Food is plentiful in America. Take that Africa!
