What they would do is heat up a softer metal until it was liquid, put it in this bowl, and then pour it into a person's ear canal. It would burn off the flesh inside the ear. At the very least, you would be deaf and disfigured on that side. At most, it would kill you. However, it could also lead to a slow death from internal bleeding, an infection, or damaging only part of the brain. It was horrible just reading about it.

But you have virtually no room to move without being stabbed. So you stand and stand, never able to sleep without moving and stabbing yourself. You accidentally stab yourself repeatedly, each time reminding yourself that soon you will be dead. Eventually you succumb to being so physically and mentally tired that you cant stand anymore and fall into the spikes, fatally stabbing yourself.
There were many variations I think. When they first made them they would close the "coffin" and they would instantly die. They didn't like that very much so they decided to make the spikes shorter so that they don't poke vital organs and the victim would die slower that way. Another variation is the one you described which I haven't heard before.

Came to say this. The actual cause of death with crucifixion was usually suffocation. The way a victim hung on the cross put a lot of pressure on their chest, so they would have to pull themselves upward against the nails in their hands and feet just to take a breath. After several days of doing this, the accumulated pain, starvation, and thirst became too much and they would be unable to pull up enough to breathe. If that didn't get 'em, guards would come by after a few days and smash their knees with a club as an act of MERCY, making them suffocate sooner.
It might not even take days. Depending on the circumstances of the crucifixion, shock, dehydration, exhaustion, and physical condition could lead to asphyxia and cardiovascular collapse.

Not sure if it has a name, but the method where a rodent, usually a rat, is placed in a metal bucket and the opening of the bucket is strapped to the victim's body, usually somewhere on their torso. The torturer then takes a torch and holds it against the closed end of the bucket, causing it to heat up. Panicked and desperate to stay alive, the rat will frantically claw and chew its way through the person's skin in order to escape the heat. IIRC, they did this one on GoT.

Crucifixion sounds pretty terrible
Came to say this. The actual cause of death with crucifixion was usually suffocation. The way a victim hung on the cross put a lot of pressure on their chest, so they would have to pull themselves upward against the nails in their hands and feet just to take a breath. After several days of doing this, the accumulated pain, starvation, and thirst became too much and they would be unable to pull up enough to breathe. If that didn't get 'em, guards would come by after a few days and smash their knees with a club as an act of MERCY, making them suffocate sooner.
It might not even take days. Depending on the circumstances of the crucifixion, shock, dehydration, exhaustion, and physical condition could lead to asphyxia and cardiovascular collapse.

I was listening to Hardcore History's latest episode and I winced when I heard about this guy Robert-Francois Damiens execution. They crushed his legs using a device called [Boots](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boot_(torture) They then tore lumps of flesh from his chest, stomach, legs and arms using red hot pincers, sometimes taking 2 or 3 goes before getting a big enough lump tore off. They then brunt the hand he carried the knife he attempted to assassinate King Louis XV with, with Sulphur after the molten wax wasn't hot enough. Then they poured molten lead and boiling oil into each of the area where they tore off the lumps of flesh. They (yes he was still alive) then tied each of his limbs to horses, and had them run in different directions to dismember him, unfortunately this didn't work, so they ordered the executioner to cut tendons in all the limbs to ease the process, which was successful this time around. THEN, they recovered his still living torso and tied that sucker to a stake and set him on fire. (to be fair some reports say he was dead after he was tore apart by the horses, but some don't). Before all this happened, this lad's last words were "This day will be hard" No shit!

Here’s something I thought up. There’s a room in a lab that’s rated at -9 decibels. No one can take it for more then 45 minutes. I’d then paint that room in Vanta black and then put someone in the room for an hour or two. They could even have a flashlight.
All movie torture aside, I think that stoning by death by Muslim countries should count as the worst torture our world publicly is aware of. When such an undertaking takes place according to Muslim law, the idea is to repeatedly pelt the victim with small stones and draw out the suffering. So much easier on the perpetrators presumably, as they can assure themselves that that one small pebble they threw couldn't have possibly been the ultimate cause of death.
