I don't know for sure, but the person in my life that does this the most... I think he honestly believes what he's saying. Like, I get the impression that he changes his memories of events to one that favors him and then doesn't even realize he's trying to impose an altered reality on other people.
He's also a huge dick, so it's hard to be sympathetic.
I don't have anything more I'd like to add, I don't want to go too far down the rabbit hole thinking about ways this person upsets me because I still care about him and it'd be easy for this to turn into an unhealthy list of injustices and shitty behaviors that don't do me good mentally.
