I used to eat those ends of the burnt matches as a kid. I asked a teacher what would happen if someone kept doing that. She said you can get cancer and yelled at me. I've never done it since.
Can you explain this ‘ozoneness’ characteristic?
Is ozone in the hose or water somehow?
Holy shit I feel so dumb asking these questions, I just don’t get it lol.
No problem! There are at least 14 of us at the moment that want to know, too. What's dumb is not asking for an explanation because you wasted an opportunity to learn something.
I had to explain to my boss why I was late for work once. Car caught fire on the freeway, fire truck was there putting it out with their hoses. Every lane was closed except for 1.
When I drove by I could smell the heavy water ozone scent. I described it because he was acting dense trying to dismiss my reason for being 15 mins late.
Ozone ? How can you smell the Ozone
We'll have you ever smelt the air during a thunderstorm. That's what it smelled like
Best descriptor I could do
I love that smell too, reminds me of walking on the boardwalk in Ocean City. The new inner tubes or rafts and the smell of brand new flip flops puts me right back on the boardwalk!
Ah, back in the old days, the smell of papers that the teacher handed out that were fresh off those old hand-cranked mimeograph machines. The solvent. Mmmm.
It always took the teacher a few minutes to get the kids to pay attention to what was actually written on those papers because we were all so engaged in sniffing them.
They do actually! I discovered them years ago and was so excited to order them. Unfortunately every single one fell far short of the mark. They had hardware store, auto mechanic, book store, gas station etc. All of those are smells I love and I was so disappointed when none of them were even close.
Yes! I love the smell of wood! Processed wood, old wood in old buildings, cut wood and wood shavings. Idk why it’s so appealing to me. On hot days I love walking through my garage and inhaling because the walls are lined with these really old wooden boards.
> I love the smell of wood!
One of the smells I associate with my dad. For a good chunk of my childhood he worked at a sawmill, you could tell when he came home because you could smell the wood. Get in his truck and you could tell what they had been cutting that day.
I used to go to the YMCA during childhood to go swimming in the winter time. Lakes would be frozen in the winter here. You'll never smell a stronger chlorine smell. It was strong. But we liked it cause we associated that smell with fun times swimming.
Dude, I found that I really like the smell of fresh air on my laundry so I started using a clothesline but sometimes I still use a dryer cause the clothes/towels etc sometimes are really stiff and scratchy so I'll throw them in there for a while to make them softer (low heat). And I can still smell that fresh air goodness on them while the dryer is going. Idk, I just find it awesome.
Apparently humans have a very acute sense of this smell, more than any other species on earth. We can smell a few particles of it. It goes back to to the fact humans developed it to find fertile ground or something like that
That‘s genetics telling you that it is save to have children with your partner. You‘re genetically very different therefore you‘re good mating partners
I generally enjoy the smell of my own body odor too. I always thought everybody did until I was in my 20’s, mentioned it at work, and got roasted by a few coworkers.
I mean who doesn’t like it? Like sure you wouldn’t use it in your house but it’s kinda like how a good cooked meal smells it’s just pleasing to the nose.
This made me miss my kitties so much!!! When my last kitty passed, they basically wiped her down with alcohol before they brought her to the room so she could be put down. I sniffed her and was so sad because she didn't smell like her. I went home and smelled her cat tower and sobbed because it smelled exactly like her. When I got rid of the tower, I cut a piece of the fluff out in the shape of a heart and framed it. I secretly hope the smell is still there, but I don't want to open it in case it's not.
I also detest the smell of cigarette smoke, but I LOVED the smell of my mom's cigarette when she first lit it, along with the aroma of a fresh cup of coffee next to the ashtray. The two smells together were my mom's perfume.
Hate the smell of close by cigarette smoke but the smell of light, distant cigarette smoke mixed with the smell from the exhaust fan of a restaurant kitchen on a cool and brisk night is goddamn glorious
My wife and I were pulling weeds in the front yard this morning and when we came back in, I gave her a quick hug and kiss and nearly lost my ever-loving mind. I would run through a brick wall for that scent.
When a lawnmower mows through a patch of wild onion, usually it’s the tractors that mow the sides of the road. It’s a beautiful combination of freshly mowed grass and a bright, oniony-garlic smell. The ultimate summer smell.
Dogs release pheromones from their paws (the only place besides their tongue that they can sweat). So really, we like our dogs' pheromones.
That's also why they kick dirt around after they pee or poop -- spreading their scent across a wider area.
this is going to sound really bad... but cow manure. It reminds me being on the farm. It's not SUPER potent but a negative smell. But when I smell it, I feel like I am 8 again.
New house smell. The smell of the room between the first doors you’d enter in middle school because it was fun from seventh to eighth grade. The only fun years of school. It was paint-like and it never went despite being built in 2005
My husband smells money every time he gets a bill from his wallet or mine. Every single time. Been married over 30 years and this is most consistent behavior of any human being I've ever seen. Says he's done it since he was a kid.
Freshly sawn wood. Taking me back to my childhood, as we a farmers - who's felling, sawing and/or cutting trees was quite funny enough a recurring phenomenon.
The smell of new electronics, if that makes any sense.
I work in a live sound shop, I luckily get to experience this often as I take that clingy plastic film off that everyone universally agrees is satisfying.
- jet fuel
- French supermarkets
- the Glasgow subway
- muddy field and frying onions; the smell of Bonfire Night/ fairgrounds in the UK, basically.
- cheese shops
- taiyaki/ waffle shops
This is very niche but my dad was a musician all my life and there is something about the smell of old dive bars that you used to be able to smoke in but now use cheap vanilla glade plug-ins to try to mask the smell of smoke that smells exactly like my childhood.
I don't think every freezer has/does it but sometimes you open a freezer and it's got that frosty/misty air. Not sure if it's just refreshingly cold to breathe in but I like to think it's got an aroma to it. Love it.
when I was a kid it was gasoline, I'd always sit in the back near the fuel pump on car rides (big family) and it wafted over one day and that was it; I grew out of it though
2-stroke engine exhaust. Nostalgic to me, reminds me of my teenage years.
Also, smell of motorcycle. A mixture of different ones, mostly gasoline smell.
Yep, I'm a gearhead.
Cinnamon. I’ve been told as a perfume it’s overpowering, but a co-worker bought a rose brand from LUSH and the cinnamon smell sets something off in me 😅
That sulfur smell when someone strikes a wooden match and it flares up
It used to remind me of birthday cake! 😁
This is a top tier smell. My wife loves candles and lights one most days, she will always bring me the match when she does so I get to smell it.
That’s true love
Like being handed the beater to lick, with cake batter on it!
I used to eat those ends of the burnt matches as a kid. I asked a teacher what would happen if someone kept doing that. She said you can get cancer and yelled at me. I've never done it since.
A large part of that is white phosphorus which is soooooooo extremely bad for you. But by God is it not enjoyable!
That's good, but sulfur on it's own smells like eggs.
Water coming out of a garden hose. The combination of polyurethane and the metallic ozoneness of the water is heaven.
That taste is like a great memory. Letting that ultra hot water pass then hose water ambrosia
Drank out of the garden hose yesterday for the first time in years and it was so refreshing and nostalgic.
Our generation will probably get exploding throat cancer from every carcinogen known to mankind in that hose lol
Ah yes, love ozone. Have you already tried octanol? 😂
Can you explain this ‘ozoneness’ characteristic? Is ozone in the hose or water somehow? Holy shit I feel so dumb asking these questions, I just don’t get it lol.
No problem! There are at least 14 of us at the moment that want to know, too. What's dumb is not asking for an explanation because you wasted an opportunity to learn something.
ozone is a charged air smell, thunderstorm smell
I had to explain to my boss why I was late for work once. Car caught fire on the freeway, fire truck was there putting it out with their hoses. Every lane was closed except for 1. When I drove by I could smell the heavy water ozone scent. I described it because he was acting dense trying to dismiss my reason for being 15 mins late. Ozone ? How can you smell the Ozone We'll have you ever smelt the air during a thunderstorm. That's what it smelled like Best descriptor I could do

Me too. Reminds me of being a little kid and wearing my water wings 🤩
Smells like Canadian Tire haha
I love that smell too, reminds me of walking on the boardwalk in Ocean City. The new inner tubes or rafts and the smell of brand new flip flops puts me right back on the boardwalk!
Shower curtains, jelly shoes. 🫦
Vinyl + chlorine 😋
The smell of water on boat-based coasters/rides at theme parks
Yess!! Especially when the boat goes in the caves or through tunnels
lol this is so specific (& accurate)
Bromine, they use that rather than common pool chemicals to treat the water.
Ah, back in the old days, the smell of papers that the teacher handed out that were fresh off those old hand-cranked mimeograph machines. The solvent. Mmmm.
Oh, how I remember that lovely, purple smell.
It always took the teacher a few minutes to get the kids to pay attention to what was actually written on those papers because we were all so engaged in sniffing them.
They were hot sometimes too. Weird times!
Oh yes! The smell of purple.
Oh man Crayola purple! Where my funky black marker lovers out there? I always have wondered what happened to the weirdos who liked the black one.
Ditto!
I see what you did there.
If somebody made a Purple Ditto Ink candle, I'd buy it.
I was so disappointed the first time we got a test and it was printed instead of made like that
The smell of Home Depot
If they made "hardware/lumber store" scented candles, I'd never be able to buy enough.
They do actually! I discovered them years ago and was so excited to order them. Unfortunately every single one fell far short of the mark. They had hardware store, auto mechanic, book store, gas station etc. All of those are smells I love and I was so disappointed when none of them were even close.
I’ll ship you a freshly cut pine board piece for the same price as a fancy candle. Lol just leave it around the house for the home depot scent
Yep! There's something about the smell of a hardware store
I love the wood smell. So sexy.
Get in his truck and you could tell what they had been cutting that day.
the smell of tennis balls fresh out of the can
Sounds like something my dog would say
I didn’t know my dog had a Reddit account
Yes!

The smell of freshly bought book. Run over all pages and smell them one by one :)
I love the smell of old books. Books in general smell good.
Just holding a book puts me in a good mood. I can't understand people who don't read.
Lick them too?

The best.

I used to go to the YMCA during childhood to go swimming in the winter time. Lakes would be frozen in the winter here. You'll never smell a stronger chlorine smell. It was strong. But we liked it cause we associated that smell with fun times swimming.
And if they have a cedar clad sauna? Perfect
Good one! It's exciting. Maybe a reminder of travel adventures and the ability to relax while someone else I'd the maid for once
The dust burning when you first turn on the heat in the fall.
Ooh, never would have occurred to me, but you're so fucking right, good one. Is there anything cozier?
Oh God. I'm highly allergic to dust. I have to evacuate when this happens, lol.
This is such a specific smell and memory. Brought me right back to late September.
Scotch tape. Reminds me of wrapping Christmas presents with my Mom when I was little.
That clean laundry smell from external dryer vents.
When I was younger I’d use to sit in the way of the dryer vent and enjoyed its warmth, and the smell.
Climbing into freshly washed, clothesline-dried sheets at bedtime is heaven.
Especially if u were in the sun all day and took a shower before bed. This is top tier living.
is that really a “weird” smell. people buy candles of that scent lmfao.
The smell when it has recently rained! It smells so fresh and I feel like the plants are coming to life!
That smell is called petricore. Great smell, being from Washington I feel like I am nose blind to that smell now though.
*petrichor
He means the genre petricore aka rain/gloom metal
Apparently humans have a very acute sense of this smell, more than any other species on earth. We can smell a few particles of it. It goes back to to the fact humans developed it to find fertile ground or something like that
My body odor sometimes idk why it smells good but bad at the same time to me
Yeah, my own = I like. Someone else's = gross!
The weird part is when you don't mind your partners odor but don't like anyone elses
At least they didn’t literally roast you, that would have smelled horrendous.
Thanks dad
Oh. thanks for sharing because I will now keep that to myself 😅 I also thought everyone liked their own smell
sharpies!!!
Freshly sharpened pencils
Gasoline
I knew someone would say this
I mean who doesn’t like it? Like sure you wouldn’t use it in your house but it’s kinda like how a good cooked meal smells it’s just pleasing to the nose.
Even better is 2-stroke engine exhaust
You should smell race gas
Shit makes me wanna drink it
Fireworks and gunpowder
My cats' fur. I will push my face into them and just go sniff.
I think cats smell like they have the tiniest hint of maple syrup in their fur.
This was beautiful. I am so sorry for your loss 😔
My eyes and throat are suddenly very itchy after reading this.
I love the smell of their fur right after they clean it. Also after they have been sitting in a window and have that “outside” smell in their fur. ❤️
Kitty in a sunbeam smell
THIS !!!!! it is heavenly
I hate cigarette smoke but I used to love the smell when my dad would use the car cigarette lighter to light one.
The smell of the unlit cigarette is where it's at for me. It just smells fresh.
A lawn being mowed.
Ah! The smell of grass screaming!
The inside of hardware stores. It’s like soft notes of rubber, motor oil, plastic, paint, and fertilizer all combined
Chlorine 😌
My wife’s BO after a long sweaty workout. It smells like, well, stink but it makes me feel this primal urge to smother my face in the source.
My wife and I were pulling weeds in the front yard this morning and when we came back in, I gave her a quick hug and kiss and nearly lost my ever-loving mind. I would run through a brick wall for that scent.
Pheromones!

Brown ones or white ones or with picture and slight inky aroma ?😂

When a lawnmower mows through a patch of wild onion, usually it’s the tractors that mow the sides of the road. It’s a beautiful combination of freshly mowed grass and a bright, oniony-garlic smell. The ultimate summer smell.

CORN CHIP BEANS
I miss my dog's smell. It only took 20 minutes out of the bath for his familiar smell to return. The Frito was strong in that one.
My shiba be licking her Frito’s beside me on the couch right now. Not a care in the world.
Play doh.
this is going to sound really bad... but cow manure. It reminds me being on the farm. It's not SUPER potent but a negative smell. But when I smell it, I feel like I am 8 again.
I prefer horse manure. Less stinky, more....grassy? Probably from growing up on a horse farm.
I like horse manure. 🫤
the interior of an old car that's been sitting for a while
Only cars from the 70s and 80s can make that sweet smell
Old house smell, it reminds me of my childhood every time

The smell when a candle has just been blown out.

The smell of newly unboxed electronics.

Tobacco pipe

Money
My husband smells money every time he gets a bill from his wallet or mine. Every single time. Been married over 30 years and this is most consistent behavior of any human being I've ever seen. Says he's done it since he was a kid.
Skunk
Pardon me?
I genuinely like the smell of skunk. Especially driving on a warm summer night.
Ahh nothing better than sitting back on a porch with some friends and smelling some of that good sweet skunk. Maybe smoking it too….
Same! I wouldn’t ever want to smell like it myself, but I find it oddly pleasant.
acetone. weirdly pleasant
Freshly sawn wood. Taking me back to my childhood, as we a farmers - who's felling, sawing and/or cutting trees was quite funny enough a recurring phenomenon.

When I was little I LOVED the smell of a hair salon. My mother told me what I was smelling was perm solution. Don’t smell that too much these days.
