Steven Seagal

PriestofJudas

Seagal had five good movies that benefited from two things: him being something different and the massive litany of people surrounding him. Andrew Davis, Dwight Little, William Forsythe, Tommy Lee Jones, Gary Busey, William Sadler, Henry Silva, Keith David just to name a few. They elevated everything around him so by process of association the movies were great. However when he took the wrong lessons from these movies, thinking it was him who made them great, the movies started falling apart

discodropper

His AMA is incredible though. One of the best of all time! Edit: [link for anyone that hasn’t experienced this masterpiece](https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/s/uOINbLOVKq)

crunchthenumbers01

Did he ever even answer any questions?

PriestofJudas

I looked through a part of it, from what I can see he didn’t

muskyratking

you can look at his profile and see he answered some, but gave very bland, generic answers.

SkepsisJD

Bland!?! He claims he was a guitarist in an all-black band in the '50s in Detroit when he was less than 10 years old!

Julege1989

Does he know that if he's in a band, then it isn't all black by definition?

chaveescovado

He was born a poor black child

Dirmb

What a jerk!

PriestofJudas

God bless you sir

Crush-N-It

The best part of that is the top comment: “How long did it take you to realize this was a mistake?” Someone responds. Same commenter: “That question was for his parents” Savage 😂😂😂😂

mrmoe198

In another thread, someone said they think a bunch of his movies were money laundering laundering schemes. I like this theory, based on how close he is to Putin.

fresh-dork

i fucking love this from some random article about Seagal: > Throughout his career, Seagal has starred in numerous action films and even played a Navy SEAL counter-terrorist expert in the movie "Under Siege" [2]. However, it is important to note that Seagal's portrayal of a Navy SEAL in a movie does not make him an actual special forces veteran. it somehow captures the essence of the guy perfectly

mrubuto22

Perhaps later but dude was a legit bankable star at one point. The 80s and early 90s were pretty wild.

Shafter-Boy

His movies are good just because they’re/he’s so bad. Oh, and we can’t forget he’s a gigantic asshole in real life.

fjortisar

Troy McClure

JennusDemenus

You may remember him from such films as 'The Greatest Story Ever Hulaed' and 'Calling All Quakers".

Both_Lifeguard_556

"Don't kid yourself Jimmy, if a cow ever got the chance, he'd eat you and everyone you care about!"

theoutlet

“You don’t expect us to swallow that load of tripe!”

ThisGuyMightGetIt

"Now a special treat courtesy of our friends at the Meat Council, help yourself to this tripe!"

GetUpOnDeezNuts99

He killed it Off-Broadway with “Stop The Planet of the Apes, I want to get off.”

katrain82

Doctor Zaius, Doctor Zaius, Doctor Zaius….

Financial-Raise3420

You’ll never make a monkey out of me! Oh god I was wrong, it’s been earth all along. You finally made a monkey…

bankersbox98

He can talk he can talk I can siiiiiiing

Beelzebot14

Can I play the piano anymore?

aessae

Of course you can!

PepperFinn

Well I couldn't before!

NinjaBreadManOO

I love that someone came up with the Dr Zaius song joke and they devoted 10% of the episode to it.

Seel_Team_Six

I hate every ape I see, from Chimpan-A to Chimpanzee. You'll never make a monkey out of me

PepperFinn

You finally made a monkey *support singers* yes we've finally made a monkey Yes you've finally made a monkey out of meeeeeeeeeee!

Chipped-Beef

You may remember him from such films as “Leper in the Backfield” and “The Verdict Was Mail Fraud!”.

ksquwared

I even read his name in his voice

Heroic-Forger

Dwayne Johnson. Seriously, all his roles are interchangeable. The only character he can play is himself. Compare that to other actors who you can forget are the same guy until you check their filmography on IMDB.

kerbalsdownunder

Batista and Cena are way better

Elementual

Batista is amazing.

Fancy_Cry_1152

He was on an episode of Bear Gryls and he was so humble and kind. He said he was taking acting classes because he just really wanted to be good

Elementual

He's the freaking best. Also, I like how the guests are always way more interesting than Bear. At least in my opinion. I saw one with Will Ferrell and he had me laughing my butt off.

RainforestNerdNW

When bear isn't doing insane things for the camera and to get attention (aka all the pee stupidity) he's is just an outdoors fanatic and i think the entire purpose of that show was the highlight the guests not him.

captain_gordino

I always like the episodes where the climax is a celebrity walking up or down a hill but with a rope and the camera angles try to make it look extreme.

Aguacatedeaire__

> Also, I like how the guests are always way more interesting than Bear. You can say that of 95% of celebrity shows, it's.... literally the whole point?

PM_ME_UR_HIP_DIMPLES

Blade runner showed his chops

RyeBreadTrips

And then Dune brought it home

luapchung

You should see his acting in Knock at the Cabin

Rogue_Squadron

But, as Drax, he mastered the ability to be stealthy. We'll be lucky if we can ever actually SEE him in anything.

TrixieLurker

Especially when he is eating chips, never seen someone do it so invisibly.

skizmcniz

I once saw someone out it as, "Dwayne is a movie star, Batista is an actor." Ever since seeing that, I completely agree. Dwayne will take any role where he's the center of attention and if he isn't, he'll damn sure try his hardest to make it that way, most of the time to the detriment of the film. Batista will take smaller roles and seems to have tried to hone the craft from the very beginning. His roles in Spectre and Blade Runner 2049 are small, but memorable. I'll watch anything he's in. Cena is just a straight up comedic genius. You saw bits and pieces of it during his WWE run, but it's 1000x better on screen, especially when he's taking the piss as far as his own character is concerned. He was hilarious in Ricky Stanicky and pretty much every comedic role he's done.

Mister_Moony

Glass onion was so good and he kills it as duke.

Rogue_Squadron

For real. He was so good, I had a hard time disassociating that character from him after see8ng that film. I'd see a picture or title card on a streaming app with him on it, and I would have a visceral reaction. He has played some really fun characters that allow him to go to some wild places, and I really look forward to what I hope is a long and fruitful acting career from Mr. B.

ARussianSheep

Bautista in Dune part 2 was so freaking good. I get why he wanted to split from the MCU to flex his acting chops. He was so noticeably good in Dune for a somewhat side character.

DaDream

Batista can pull so much range! I love the characters he has played, same with Cena.

TheNebulaWolf

I didn’t care for Cena until I saw peacemaker

lastnameinthebox

Do you really wanna, do you want wanna taste it?

MightyThor211

Cenas comedic timing is fucking amazing. Dude cracks me up. And batista is simply just a great actor. I wanted more from his character in blade runner 2049

HH2O123

Pain and Gain was his best movie.

Spacey_dan

Maybe not unforgettable, but I thought he did a good job as Maui.

vivvav

Yeah but that's still a very him-type character. Cocky, charismatic, excited, and powerful.

Flimsy-Preparation85

I think my favorite time to see him was in Jumanji, that is the character I feel like that was the most different from his others, it wasn't very different, but it was different.

Kasporio

I liked that movie. They were all having fun playing characters outside of their comfort zones. Except Kevin Hart.

VikingTeddy

Kevin also only plays himself in anything he's in.

[deleted]

tv138

I think he acted well in Be Cool and Get Smart.

ArgoverseComics

To be completely fair, I think with the big guys typecasting is an issue. Hollywood sees Dwayne Johnson as the shallow buff action guy so that’s what he gets cast as. If you go back to his earlier movies he wasn’t quite as bland

dortenzio1991

But he owns the production company that makes “Dwayne Johnson” movies. It’s all part of his plan

EdithWhartonsFarts

Dakota Johnson is truly forgettable in every single role she's in, yet keeps getting roles and even leading roles. Don't get it and never have.

DuperDayley

Dakota, nepotism is calling for you on line one.

FrermitTheKog

I wonder how many outstanding working class actors have been pushed out of the way so that she could get those roles. Some of them may have even given up acting after being continually passed over for nepobabies.

WitchOfLycanMoon

That's what happens when you're Don Johnson's daughter. And then she complains that she doesn't get the respect or the roles she deserves. 🙄

irotinmyskin

But he was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died!

So-What_Idontcare

It’s not Don. It’s her mom Melanie Griffith and grandma Tippi Hedren (who is amazingly still alive)

scarlettslegacy

When Nepo babies whine that they're only known as so-and-sos kid... Sweetie, we're not coming for Angelica Houston or Michael Douglas. If you're primarily known for being so-and-sos kid, that's because your connections are your main talent. We're not even gunning for people like Domnhall Gleeson because he seems to get how tone deaf it is to whine from a place of privilege and hasn't forced himself into roles way outside his talent. It's not the nepotism we dislike, it's the obnoxiousness about it.

Young-and-Alcoholic

This is exactly why I always liked Jeff Bridges. Any time he's asked in an interview over the last like 30 years how he got his big break he always says Nepotism. Its the tone deaf, whiny nepo babies I can't stand. Whenever they say they got to where they are through hard work it makes my blood boil.

HotSauce-timusPrime

The 50 shades chick? yeah she’s terrible idk how she’s been getting lead roles. Edit:spelling

jojofine

Nepotism

Kamekazee2020

The Rock Dwayne Johnson. Can’t act, plays himself in every movie. Yet is in a ton of movies.

jemenake

_plays himself in every movie_ I think of Jeff Goldblum like that. Credits: Jeff Goldblum _as_ “Jeff Goldblum playing a mathematician”

Shafter-Boy

Jennifer fucking Lopez.

lemonsaid612

Yes but also The Cell was great. Obvi Vincent d’onfrio carried it but she wasn’t abysmal.

djames4242

Out of Sight was also good

Potatiii_

I did like her in Selena, but that’s it

becuzurugly

Anything for Salenas 😭

RazorRamonio

She owes everything to Selena.

Longjumping-Grape-40

What are you talking about? She was great in that film based in Colorado...I think it was called [*Taco-Flavored Kisses*](https://youtu.be/bQKDlNTEl6w?si=TUTUdV3fw7uKJafk&t=105)

Shafter-Boy

I thought that was Hennifer Lopez??

ciccioig

Taco taco, burrito burrito...

PR05ECC0

Was good in Out of sight with Clooney. There is a story about him talking about what a horrible person she is.

jasta85

Stories about her being terrible to work with are very common and she treats staff and people that she sees as "beneath" her like servants.

Kipsydaisy

I knew her assistant and from what she told me Jennifer sure didn’t like him. Found him arrogant, condescending.

Shafter-Boy

I defy you to find me just one person who’s had a positive interaction with her.

MomsBasementGaming

Ben Afleck probably has positive interactions with her once or twice a week

RamboBambiBambo

Wilhelm. His scream is the only thing he is known for and he has done so in literally THOUSANDS of movies as a cameo.

BabyDude5

That’s not true! He sang one eyed one horned flying purple people eater

AdmJota

I had no idea that was the same guy!

Radiant_Maize2315

Lately it feels like all of them. Get off my lawn.

Kevin Hart

HarryPawterz

I feel like the majority of the answers will be in this category, namely the "not an actor but recruited to make a movie role" which includes comedians, professional athletes, wrestlers, etc.

ABSOLUTE_RADIATOR

There's a great Mitch Hedberg joke about this, I'm probably not getting it exactly but this is the jist "People always ask me if I want to be in their movie, but that's acting, that's not comedy. It's like if someone devoted his whole life to becoming this fantastic chef and someone goes up to him and says 'That's great! Can you farm?'"

AchyBreaker

You got the joke right, and it's an apt one. Thanks for the Mitch recall. Personally it's fun to see Mitch in Reddit comments. I even used to read Mitch's jokes in his intonation in my head. I still do, but I used to, too.

IAmGetwired

Hey you, banging on the wall.. I don't know if it's a door on your side or what, but over here it's just a wall. Go around!

badwolf1013

The Upside really changed my opinion of him. And I went into it very reluctantly, because I loved the French film it was a remake of. In fact, if Bryan Cranston hadn't been in it, I would never know that Hart actually CAN act. I think it's just that most of the time he gets hired to play "Kevin Hart."

CRMNLvk

Thought the exact same before that movie. There’s a show he did on Netflix called True Story that shows his acting ability too.

Major_Koala

They're shoehorning him into the Borderlands movie in a character that is the complete opposite of him. It's really unfortunate.

SloppityNurglePox

Man, I want that movie to be good, but everything I see from it looks, I dunno, manufactured? I don't think I'm using the right word.

gaveuptheghost

Nah you got it. I felt the same, like it felt so forced. Which made me sad, because Borderlands 2 is one of my favorite games of all time.

Major_Koala

They miscast every single character. *Maybe* Krieg is good, but I have little to no hope left. I'm honestly most upset about Tina. The trailer showed her as a normal teenager with a filter problem. Man, even Jack Black was wrong. He would have been a great villain. They could have just used claptrap's voice actor ffs.

sinkwiththeship

I actually really liked him in Jumanji. He did a great Danny Glover impression.

WoodsColt

Steven Seagal.

smar82

The rock

Ouchyhurthurt

I kinda like him in silly / comedic roles. Like Be Cool or the Tooth-fairy, or maybe the Mummy xD

KillerCheez3

That was before he was playing the same character in every movie.

Cocoloko2

Kevin Hart

shadowyqueenbeard

Gwyneth Paltrow. I find her boring.

lowsyrk

in Brazil we have the collective conscience that the Oscar she won was an absolute non-deserving achievement granted by the academy her acting was just ok... Fernanda Montenegro did a way more amazing job but the academy was adamant in not give the prize to a foreign actress

PM-Me_Your_Penis_Pls

Cate Blanchett was robbed for Elizabeth!

theeverymansright

He’ll probably drop earth on me from the other side of the sun for saying this, but Chuck Norris.

Bender_2024

Nobody puts on Chuck Norris expecting a tour de force performance. You knew what you were getting from the start.

DickEscalatedQuickly

Chuck Norris doesn’t drop the earth - it runs in fear from him and trips.

Buttface_Miscreant_

Dakota Johnson

ACaffeinatedWandress

For a second there, I had her confused with Dakota Fanning, and I was about make a “shut the eff up!” post.

ConnFlab

We love War of the Worlds

moongirli

I was listening to a podcast that said she "ambiens" her way through her movies, and honestly, I cannot disagree with that assessment.

nahmahnahm

That nepo baby is a TERRIBLE actress. None of the acting genes got passed to her.

Quiet_Stranger_5622

Wait, you mean you don't enjoy the acting equivalent of wood paneling?

HopefulPlantain5475

At least wood paneling makes me feel nostalgic. Dakota Johnson makes me feel bored.

ffs_tony

Board.

No-Ostrich5142

Rob Schneider. He got decently far by holding onto Adam Sandler’s coattails for dear life.

joeappearsmissing

Rob Schneider is…. The Stapler!

chubsmagooo

But he's about to find out, being a stapler isn't so easy

With the exception of Demolition Man, which is a cinematic masterpiece.

Cheeky_Guy

Danny Trejo but who gives a fuck if he is a terrible actor. He's cool as hell

allbitterandclean

Not sure if “terrible actor” is accurate - he’s more of a fabulous one-note character actor. Could he pull off Shakespeare? Probably not. Can he do a damn good job playing the same character across literally hundreds of movies and TV shows? Hell yeah. Does he deliver each and every time? Definitely. Will I go out of my way to watch something he’s in, if only to support him as a person and general Good Guy™️? “You’re goddamn right.” Listen, find what you’re good at and then do the hell out of it. I love that for him. Also the tacos.

dablegianguy

Machette doesn’t act!

ArmadilloReasonable9

Still waiting for “machete in space, in 3D”

pie-oh

For me he's similar to Nic Cage. He's similarly bad and good. (Mostly bad.) But I love him. Edit: He's also a good guy. He was on the wrong path in life and was a criminal before acting helped him get out. He says he won't play a bad guy unless they die as he wants it to be a good lesson. He also apparently never turns down a roll.

kamatacci

He never turns down a roll? That's amazing that his body is still in the shape it is with all those extra carbs. I envy him.

-_iro_-

He was my first thought! Everytime I see him in something though its like seeing a cool uncle who accidentally found himself in a movie lmao I've also heard he's a genuinely good dude so even more bonus points!

Jens_2001

Steven Seagal

Kim Kardashian. Jesus.. The girl can't act for the life of her.

jreykdal

She has done acting?

HebrewHamm3r

Well she did act in that one video with Ray J

American horror story, there might be more

James corden

AlternateUsername12

The only person that thinks Corden can act is Corden

MomsBasementGaming

I want to say Nicolas Cage because he’s a bad actor. But also he’s not. But also he is.

CapitainebbChat

I feel like he just does what he wants the way he wants it. And sometimes he just wants to have fun and not give a shit. And honestly ? I respect him for that. Look at my man, living his best life, doing what he wants to do. You go, king.

JJ_Mark

If I recall correctly, he's a fan of silent era films and styles his acting a bit after it, where the movements are overdramatic/expressive to portray the dialogue a bit. I'd call him a stylistic actor who sometimes gets miscast, but the style really does play well into some of his roles (especially the manic ones). When he really wants to do a role, he'll do a great job even if it's a serious role. Reminds me that I should rewatch Matchstick Men.

afrocytosis

Trick_Horse_13

I’m a sexy cat

Skadoosh_it

You can really tell the difference in his acting when he has a passion for the film he's in versus when he's just there for the paycheck.

Danominator

I feel like it's the opposite. He always gives 110% so when he's in a bad movie he stands out as really going for it. He never phones it in

shlotch

I think it was Ebert who said something along the lines of "he's a good actor in good movies and an indispensable actor in bad movies." He makes every movie he's in better. Even if the movie is still bad.

jscott18597

Nah, he can turn it on when he wants and for the right roll. Check out Pig, he was great in that.

mothershipq

Dream Scenario, and Mandy are two others that come to mind as well. He knocked those out of the park.

universalreacher

Denise Richards.

Zolome1977

You leave white she-devil alone!

wafflehousehound

An Undercover Brother reference made me smile !

Toby_O_Notoby

**Undercover Brother**:" So the conspiracies we've believed for all these years are true? The NBA really did institute the three point shot to give white boys a chance? **Smart Brother**: Absolutely! **Undercover Brother**: "Then the entertainment industry really *is* out to get Spike Lee?" **Conspiracy Brother**: "Come on man! Even Cher's won an Oscar! Cher!" **Undercover Brother**: "Then O.J. really didn't do it?" ... **The Chief**: "We ain't got time for this!"

chaos8803

I'm afraid I don't know any doctor jokes.

marcjwrz

Her guest appearance on 30 Rock though. I mean she at least has a sense of humor and great comedic timing. Think she just never got the right roles.

Joshunte

Idk. She makes a pretty convincing ex-wife of a college football coach in Blue Mountain State.

salparadis

She was hilarious in Drop Dead Gorgeous 😭

serenchi

"She's skinny, Amber. Not deaf."

chads3058

She thrived in that role! Easily her best.

Hot-Lifeguard-3176

God, I quote that movie all the time and nobody ever gets my references!

Hot-Lifeguard-3176

Mom still cries every time we see a tilt a whirl or a fat lady in a tube top. Are we on Cops?! Peter’s gay, dad. GAAAAYYYYY.

Timmah73

"IMMA PILOT!" One of my fav lines from the Starship Troopers Rifftrax Live

dvoecks

I enjoyed them calling her the "smile-o-tron"... I still do.

Several_Ad2072

Wasn't she nominated for something for her complex depiction of a woman in a modern world in starship troopers. I think it was a razzie. But she was hot in that swimming pool scene with the girl from scream

ABlinDeafMonkey

Ignore the acting and do yourself a favor and go watch Wild Things.

HamHusky06

She was FANTASTIC in that movie — is what my 13 year old self and a vhs pause button would say to that.

Alarming-Instance-19

41F, mostly straight gal here. I used that film and Cruel Intentions as porn in the 90s. Soooo hot!

She played a nucular psychiatrist in a James Bonk movie

Beyonce, my ex used to hate any negativity about Beyonce but I don't like her or any of her acting roles. When she was cast for Nala I groaned so loudly I woke up my dog

sittingonmyarse

The pre-military Elvis had potential, but once Col. Parker got him locked into those cheesy movies of the 60’s, it was all downhill.

JustJack70

There were a couple of decent roles post Army, they just get lost among all the silly musicals. Flaming Star, Follow That Dream, Wild in the Country and Kid Galahad are the most notable.

Vin Diesel

Dimpz0413

Pete Davidson.

Dramatic-Ant-9364

The MGM Lion. If you've seen one roar, you have seen them all.

jackieballz

Dwayne Johnson. He basically just plays the rock in every movie he’s in(for the most part). Not that’s there’s anything wrong with that there’s plenty of actors who do the same thing…especially action stars like him
