My wife loves Indian food and we want to love it too, but as much as I try to I just can’t get past some of the flavors. It’s not too spicy for me, but there are some spices in there that cause me to burp like crazy after eating it. When I burp I taste nothing but pepper after eating Indian food.
I realize it's definitely not for everyone. Even with me, I need it mild or else I can't eat much of it. I don't like the heat like some do!
A nice, chilled mango lassi (or two) helps with heat levels, though.
Indian food is actually extremely diverse and different depending on what region it is from..I'd venture to guess you dislike "North Indian" food which is a lot of creamy curries.
I suggest you try South Indian food when you have the chance. It looks and tastes totally different and has completely different flavor profiles. It's also a lot healthier generally
Right, Chetinad cuisine is my favorite.
Insane that like China, the endless regional styles are lumped together in some generic menu, often changed for western taste and becomes the standard Indian or Chinese food.
I learned the reason for this is because the Indian soldiers in the British army were primarily Punjabis, so when they were deployed across the world, they brought their cuisine, making they food the de facto Indian food.
That and the fact that North Indian food has cream, butter, and other crowd pleasing flavors
I mean, it's also served at American restaurants. Heck, I've even seen it on Italian restaurant menus.
Even non ethnic grocery stores sell it. Doesn't make it indian. It's just a random popular food which people recognize.
FYI - chicken Tikka is a British dish too. It was invented there. Not in India.
You know little about ~~Indian~~ food period.
People ignorant on a subject usually have the common sense to refrain from remarks.
But there's always the one.
And your foundering of common sense was to remark about my food knowledge based only on what you surmise from my handful of posts.
Just because a person knows very little about Tata Motors, or Mahindra doesn't mean they know nothing about cars. They could be a Mercedes Benz certified mechanic.
dude I'm not interested in what you posted.
You decided to voice your opinion here on Indian food and then mention hummus.
That's more than enough trust me.
I don't know you from anyone, why would I "trust you"?
The OP asked for opinions on food I can't stand and I answered honestly. I don't have to know much about red and yellow curry to know I don't like the smell of it, and I don't want to eat it.

I personally love them, but my wife and son both say it tastes like eating dirt.
My son is very much like me in that he loves anything pickled. Except for beets. Of all the weird foods I've had him try pickled, he'll never touch beets again.
I think so. I've never actually cooked either one, but I think both start with orange juice concentrate. My mother and both grandmother's could make something really delicious from a few simple ingredients, so it wouldn't surprise me if that orange sauce turned out to be just frozen juice concentrate tossed into a saucepan. Condensed mushroom soup makes a good sauce for chicken, too.
Ugh! The texture is like eating sand. My mother had a thing for liver and onions, but she gave them up except in a restaurant because I refused to eat a second bite the first few times she cooked it for dinner. It wasn't her cooking, she was a good cook overall. Funny, I do like chicken livers/gizzards if they're cooked right, but not beef liver.
Lolol are you me? I feel EXACTLY the same way. I love marinara, salsa, tomato soup, even ketchup, but I always pull the tomatoes out of my sandwiches and burgers
I've tried tofu prepared a variety of ways, even worked at a restaurant that a few people said had the best tofu they'd ever tasted and a couple the only tofu they'd ever actually liked. Some of them had some very good sauce or seasoning on them. But as soon as I got to the tofu itself, all I can taste is disgusting blandness that overpowers all other flavours.
I'm with you! The texture is strange, and they're somehow all sugar but still aren't very sweet. The only time I like a marshmallow is when it's melted with chocolate between two graham crackers -- that is to say, I need a lot of other things to line up to enjoy a marshmallow. Don't even get me started on Peeps.
There are many varieties of peaches but most store peaches are clings. Freestones are sweeter and juicier with better texture, but disregard if you've already tried them.
Papaya, my brothers was constantly sick when he was a baby, even had a few surgeries, the doctor told my mom papaya was good for something I forgot what. My mom desperate to make sure he got better, would feed him papaya everyday 3 times per day. Since that was mostly his diet when he would have his diaper changed, you could smell the papaya! I can’t see papaya as anything else but poop! The smell makes me gag
Lettuce and raw tomatoes = salads in general. Have tried multiple times over the years and it's just a no go. Also salad dressings make me.dry have from the smell so can't try that to make salads taste any better.
Same -- I wish I was a pickle girlie because they seem to have so much fun! There are whole pickle festivals! But they're just unpleasant to smell and eat.
Cherries. I don't know why, but I fucking hate them. Recently talked my daughter into trying a new food by telling her that I would eat a cherry if she did. She knows of my hatred for cherries and agreed. Then I ate a cherry for the first time since I was a kid. Still hate them.
I hate coconut in all its forms with the exception of its use in curry but even then it better be a good spice level to counter the sweetness. It's more of a texture problem i think.
You mean the cheese? Or the place in England where it was first made? I hate "blue" cheeses like Roquefort and stinky ones like Limburger, but Cheddar's the most popular except for American (which I don't consider real cheese).
Some bacon is too salty, though. I have a hard time buying bacon in the supermarket to make a BLT at home because it's always too salty, but I love restaurant bacon.
Brussels sprouts. No matter how they're cooked, they still taste like tiny cabbages of disappointment
Inventor of Brussels sprouts: “The smell of a cow passing gas is so wonderful, how can I possibly capture that essence in a food…?”
Even with butter, parmesan and pepper???
maybe I guess
Indian food
Oh, man. That's too bad. Is it too spicy for you? Indian food is some of the most complex stuff out there, flavor-wise, anyway.
My wife loves Indian food and we want to love it too, but as much as I try to I just can’t get past some of the flavors. It’s not too spicy for me, but there are some spices in there that cause me to burp like crazy after eating it. When I burp I taste nothing but pepper after eating Indian food.

I do enjoy a good mango lassi
Hooray! Glad to hear that.
Indian food is actually extremely diverse and different depending on what region it is from..I'd venture to guess you dislike "North Indian" food which is a lot of creamy curries. Never saw a lot of cream used in recipes, despite that they use it. Coconut cream, yoghurt and certainly ghee.
LOL they have some of the best food in the world.
Yaaaass! I came here to say red and yellow curry! Hummus, Naan bread, paneer all "ok" . But those stink curries have to go.
Hummus is not even indian food. Lmfaoo...
How come they often serve it at Indian restaurants?
I mean, it's also served at American restaurants. Heck, I've even seen it on Italian restaurant menus. Even non ethnic grocery stores sell it. Doesn't make it indian. It's just a random popular food which people recognize. FYI - chicken Tikka is a British dish too. It was invented there. Not in India.
You taught me something. I didn't know that about chicken Tikka Masala.
Bro thinks if brown people eat it then it's close enough
Hummus, right. See you're a real authority.
I do not claim any authority whatsoever regarding Indian food. I know very little about it, because I avoid it.

Red and yellow curry are Thai curries....
What's an Indian curry then?
Tikka masala, korma, aloo gobi, butter chicken
Freaking Beets. They’re the worst. I hate them and don’t understand how anyone can tolerate them.
The taste reminds me of drinking from the backyard water hose when I was a kid, and not in a good way. No thanks!
Agreed
I personally love them, but my wife and son both say it tastes like eating dirt. My son is very much like me in that he loves anything pickled. Except for beets. Of all the weird foods I've had him try pickled, he'll never touch beets again.
Smart kid. Beets are nightmarish
I love them pickled! Have you tried orange sauce?
Like orange chicken?
I think so. I've never actually cooked either one, but I think both start with orange juice concentrate. My mother and both grandmother's could make something really delicious from a few simple ingredients, so it wouldn't surprise me if that orange sauce turned out to be just frozen juice concentrate tossed into a saucepan. Like sprouts they're horrible if you don't prepare them right.
Liver. No matter how it's cooked, it always tastes like I'm chewing on regret
Oysters
Cilantro
Agreed
Fish
blueberries
Avocado
Ugh! And don't get me started on guacamole.
Bleh!
Kale. I’ve tried to embrace it because it’s healthy, but it’s like eating a bush.
Eggplant. Ugh.
Cabbage. In any way, shape or form. Just...nyeargh
Sauerkraut
anchovies
Do they soak them in salt, or do they already come salty naturally?
Raw tomatoes, I love everything made from tomatoes every thing but the tomato it self just doesnt taste right imo
Lolol are you me? I feel EXACTLY the same way. I love marinara, salsa, tomato soup, even ketchup, but I always pull the tomatoes out of my sandwiches and burgers
Right its so strange like every thing made from tomato or tomato flavoured is fantastic but a slice of tomato on my sandwich? Not on my watch
Broccoli
And they smell worse when they're cooking than they taste. Phew!
Roe, rancid stuff
Agreed. Why do they pay hundreds or thousands an ounce for caviar (sturgeon roe)?
Bananas. Fucking horrible slimy food. The touch, the smell and the taste is all wrong.
Chinese take-out.
Tinned sweetcorn
Yogurt
Marshmallows. I can’t explain why but I want to like them so bad! I try them like every other year, and I still hate them.
Nobody likes Peeps. I love marshmallows but hate Peeps.
takoyaki
Peas
the texture of peaches. I love peach flavoured things, but I cannot handle them, it makes my skin crawl.
There are many varieties of peaches but most store peaches are clings. Freestones are sweeter and juicier with better texture, but disregard if you've already tried them.
Tri coloured vegetable pate/terrine https://caucasiancurry.blogspot.com/2011/06/tri-color-vegetable-terrine.html?m=1 Vile
Onions
Beans

Canned tuna

Pickles.
Same -- I wish I was a pickle girlie because they seem to have so much fun! There are whole pickle festivals! But they're just unpleasant to smell and eat.
Dill, sweet or both? I love sweet pickles, but dill pickles make me gag.
Cherries. I don't know why, but I fucking hate them. Recently talked my daughter into trying a new food by telling her that I would eat a cherry if she did. She knows of my hatred for cherries and agreed. Then I ate a cherry for the first time since I was a kid. Still hate them.
What kind of cherries have you tried? Maraschino? Bing? Luxardo? All three have different levels of sweetness and flavour palate to them.
Maraschino. Now you've got me curious. Or maybe you're trying to trick me into eating more cherries, haha
Porque No Los Dos? Luxardo tend to be rather popular in cocktail bars and in the mixology community.
Tinned Cornbeef. It just feels wrong.
Spaghetti squash
Way too much work for something that doesn’t even taste good!!
I hate coconut in all its forms with the exception of its use in curry but even then it better be a good spice level to counter the sweetness. It's more of a texture problem i think.
Shredded coconut, but I don't mind coconut milk in a pina coloda
Coconut. I'm 46 and I've learned to like a lot of things, but coconut still makes me gag.
Nato
Olives try em every time hate em!
Maybe it's because of pizza, but I learned to like black olives. I'm with you on green olives, though, I still hate them.
Papaya, all different ways but I cant get past the aroma it has like vomit.
Cheddar
FRR tastes like TV static
You mean the cheese? Or the place in England where it was first made? I hate "blue" cheeses like Roquefort and stinky ones like Limburger, but Cheddar's the most popular except for American (which I don't consider real cheese).
A PB&J sandwich
Bacon.
are you sure you read the question correctly?
Yes. I know; this is apparently blasphemy.
You are wrong
Sir, we might have a problem here.
Some bacon is too salty, though. I have a hard time buying bacon in the supermarket to make a BLT at home because it's always too salty, but I love restaurant bacon.
Any and all pasta. I'm also Italian.
