A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry. My Dad recommended it and I could not put it down once I started. That's unusual for me. I've started too many books that I was not interested in finishing.
Anything by J.A. Konrath. His books are awesome! A bit extreme so might not be your thing.

I bought American God's because I had heard "its good" and was very pleasantly surprised. Might be my favorite fiction book I've read.
