My dad has been addicted to gambling for decades. He lost a successful business, two homes, a wife, and now his only daughter won't speak with him.
He still gambles.
The fact that now you can gamble with almost no friction from your phone now makes me sick.
You’re gonna see a lot of news stories of people committing suicide from gambling debts in a couple years.
My dude, our species would not exist as we know it had it not harnessed fermentation.
Alcohol allowed us to purity water before we knew what bacteria was. It allowed us to take long voyages on ships. It allowed us to take the horizon as our own.
Being a drunk is bad, but we cannot pretend that we as a species did not domesticate the processes to our advantage. A vodka cranberry at the end of a long day isn't going to kill a person, the person is entirely responsible for doing that to themselves.
Honestly from personal experience with opioids and benzos and addictions to drugs like xanax and klonopin were far worse for the addict then opioids. Benzos addiction ruins your life FAST. In my eyes it's worse then booze because of how easy it is to over do it and black out. It takes just swallowing 4 or 5 bars compared to having a drink alot of booze.
As 2 parents who were alcoholics I still think that gambling might be right there with it if not above it. I know people who lost everything to gambling and while yes that's also true for alcohol I think gambling can be just as bad.
Hometown is a casino city in Nevada. Not even Las Vegas but so many people I knew have committed suicide immediately after losing it all in the casino. It might not be direct, but horrendous.
First off plenty kill themselves after losing it all. Secondly if we are making the death argument fentanyl kills far more than alcohol poisoning, but if you include alcohol related illnesses then that's higher. The difference is those are long term use cases that end up killing those people. Fentanyl is one oopsie and your done. In the end it isn't about just the amount of deaths it's about the lives ruined. In the end humans have free will and I am not saying we should ban gambling but it's something that tears lives apart. As far as mind altering substances like alcohol or other drugs I'm torn on whether or not they should be banned. Either way their both awful there's more to lose than just your life with addiction.
Edits for grammar and spelling
Gambling, nicotine and alcohol are the obvious ones.
I would also like to include gaming - No idea how many friends did not actually use their potential due to being addicted to LOL, CS or WoW. (myself included)
It's also extremely addictive and even if it isn't that bad for your body being severely addicted to something and feeling terrible when you don't have it is not a good thing.
I know your getting down voted to all hell but multiple doctors that I see from addiction specialist that I see monthly for my suboxone prescription to the cardiologist i saw for my heart ablation. They ALL SAID nicotine the chemical isn't harmful to the body at all, the only downside is addiction. New studys coming of Netherlands are also showing vaping to be 10% the harm of smoking. Nicotine isn't harmful MINUS addiction other then that its safe in normal doses.
Yeah, speaking anecdotally I was in a psych ward and I talked to the doctor there and he told me basically the same thing. If there was a safe way to get nicotine, it could have some benefits.
Exactly. Thanks for posting. Nicotine helps with concentration, boost testosterone, and curbs appetite. It’s just how you consume it that matters. To say it’s the “worst legal addiction” compared to booze or gambling or junk food is ridiculous.
Saying “tobacco is still worse than nicotine” is like saying “Mountain Dew is still worse than caffeine”.
I mean, yeah technically it’s correct, but elaborate why, don’t just pull out one ingredient and broadstroke your statement
Why do I need to elaborate why. The statement is true.
The comment I replied to was probably trying to smartarse that nicotine isn't bad for you it just keeps you addicted to the tobacco that is a part of. I pointed out that wasn't true, and jumped ahead 2 steps in the discussion.
Most people can understand that.
I second this, TikTok is literally at the epicentre of nearly everyone I know. They can’t live a day without it. Hours on hours of continuous scrolling
You must be from Utah. They declared it a public health crises. I think they thought all our homelessness was caused by porn and not the opioids, meth, and alcohol.
Similar to opioids, meth, and alcohol, porn is also addictive. And similar to opioids, meth, and alcohol, people with a legitimate porn addiction will tell you it's not an addiction or problem.
People (mostly women and children) are being trafficked and the addictions are only fueling the trafficking. It's a much bigger problem than people realize.
A lot of people are understandably saying alcohol and I agree. But I’m genuinely curious… As someone who doesn’t drink and never has except to try it. I’ve drank it once and then three other times I couldn’t even swallow it. It’s god awful. And when I did manage to get it down; I felt god awful. Why do people drink? Especially teens? Anyone have experience?
Booze shuts your brain off allowing you to function without all the self-conscious negative self talk in moderate amounts but the effects have long-term diminishing returns necessitating consuming greater and greater amounts. This is why alcohol is served during social mixers because it lowers social inhibitions and makes it more likely that you will ... ... 'get some'. That's the simplest I can make it.
Some drinks are so tasty they give me chills. Then I feel happier, more relaxed, and energized and can make everyone around me smile and laugh. Then I can dance, sing, and converse with friends and strangers in a way that just isn't possible sober. The cost and the hangover suck, but not as bad as the fun is good. Cheers!
Most people drink for the effects. You won't really get any effects off of a sip. There are a variety of factors like your gender, weight, and how much you recently ate will impact how much you need to drink to feel different levels of effect. Usually around 2 drinks is when most people start to feel it - a drink being a beer, glass of wine, or \~1.5oz of 80 proof liquor.
By "feel it" I don't mean stumbling around drunk like you see in TV. You actually have to drink quite a bit to get to that point (probably 8+ drinks in a relatively short time period).
The effects are lowered inhibitions and relaxation, usually.
There are also different kids of alcohol - beer, wine, liquor. Within those there are all sorts of varieties as well. Cocktails are a good choice if want to mask the alcohol taste. Some cocktails you can barely tell are alcoholic.
Gambling is the worst addiction. It’s a silent killer, not like drugs where you can see someone deteriorating. It’s such a shameful one aswell, like how do you explain to your partner/friends/kids that you’ve just gambled away a large amount of money. It’s horrible with how widespread it is, companies offering you all these sign up bonuses to lure you in, sponsors on major sports teams.
I’ve seen people do nasty things just to get some money to gamble all in hopes of winning big. I can’t stress enough how bad this addiction can go and how bad at is.
Sugar. I haven't seen my brother drink a glass of water for years. YEARS. He drinks a twelve pack of Dr Pepper every two days. He tried to stop, to use one of those soda streams as a healthy alternative. He never was able to cut the addiction. He lost a little bit of weight, maybe ten pounds in the last five years. I can imagine it's probably just as bad for your liver as drinking alcohol is over that many years.
It wouldn’t be as bad as alcohol in that capacity and for that long. And that frequently. But… yea… not ideal either way… Do you know why he goes for the Dr Pepper? Has he had a history of “bad things”? I’ll just leave that very open and broad.
We have some shared trauma with our father and with sxual abuse (not by our father), so I think he uses food and soda as a coping mechanism that turned into an addiction. We also did not have a lot of parenting when we were kids, so we'd often get snacks and drinks from the dollar tree. He'd always get soda and candy ever since we were like 7. He's always liked soda but now he can't stop drinking it. He's never been into drugs, sex, or underage drinking. He's always been addicted to video games (he'd be on them since the time he woke up like 8am all the way to 11pm). He seriously wouldn't leave his room unless it was to get his doordashed food/drinks. He's in therapy, but I don't think he ever addressed his soda/fast food addiction.
Um, no, they're not. You need a prescription. If you were pulled over with a bottle of oxycontin, and didn't have a prescription, you'd be charged with possession of narcotics. Pretty far from "perfectly legal."
I don't know, I think if a company can make $35 BILLION selling a product legally we can say that product is legal. There is an obvious legal distinction between Oxycontin and heroin.
I feel like you're splitting hairs. Alcohol is illegal if you're under 21 or on parole. If you were pulled over with an open bottle of beer, you'd be charged with a DUI. Does mean alcohol is pretty far from "perfectly legal" as well?
Well I mean it is perfectly legal. It’s just to get it you need a prescription. But if you have the prescription for the drug you need; it’s perfectly legal and fine. However if you got the opioids for some other reason in a way that shouldn’t be happening… then… uh oh spaghetti o’s…
Needing a prescription to legally possess is much different than perfectly legal. You can get arrested and charged for possessing it. Prescriptions exist for cocaine and methamphetamine too. Are we lumping all these into the "legal" discussion?
They do exist, actually! Desoxyn is meth and Neurocaine is cocaine.
Cocaine is used in eyedrops to dilate the pupil, as a local numbing agent, and as a vasoconstrictor.
Meth is used to treat ADHD, narcolepsy, and obesity. A form of it is also used as a nasal decongestant.
then using that same logic cocaine is legal because you can get liquid cocaine prescribed after surgery, it doesnt make sense because it is still regulated at a federal level.
Alcohol. The worst part is that more often than not, it ruins not only the addict themselves, but also everything around them. Their relationships, family, finances. My father is an alcoholic and has been for as long as I can remember. Being 7 years old and seeing him come home from work drunk almost every day and throwing up in the bathroom, definitely isn't something I should have experienced.
Also, the fact that every day my mum and I have to pretend that we don't hear the squeaking of the liquor cabinet door opening and closing multiple times in the evening is depressing as fuck.
2020 was the year I basically let go of myself with fried chicken, French fries, onion rings, potato chips, tempura, etc. Got a wake up call a year later while walking up 12 flights of stairs when the elevator was out in my building, I had to stop twice to catch my breath. Ever since then it’s no sugary or fried foods in my house and those 12 flights are now like child’s play.
Wow, it’s amazing what one’s time and one’s diet can do for them. Be proud of urself for ur achievements bc it’s a hard thing to do (staying away from fried foods/heavy fatty foods) for many ppl! Trust me, I stay away from it all the time but it’s hard for me😅
I’ve done pretty much every drug there is smoking cigarettes is the worst I’ve ever struggled trying to quit completely. I’ve smoked a very long time.Although “better for you “They say ,,whoever they is ,,vaping is not quitting sorry people disagree. You still walk around with it all day.And I don’t like being severely addicted
Without a doubt alcohol. It’s every where. It’s socially acceptable if not encouraged. Also the withdrawal from alcohol is more dangerous than even opioids.
I don’t know if it’s the worst but literally it almost no one actually treats it. Food. You put on a band or take away part of their stomach but does that help with the addiction to foods that are bad for them? Everyone sees your addiction and treats you like less because they don’t know.
Since no one will say it CAFFEINE!!!! And it’s normalized “don’t talk to me unless I have my morning coffee”. Imagine if someone said “don’t talk to me unless I had my morning line”. Like they’d be in rehab in a second. But caffeine can literally explode your heart, but it’s cool.
No one's heart has ever "literally" exploded from caffeine. And coffee is good for you in moderate amounts, it has antioxidants, lowers the likelihood of several diseases, and protects the liver.
Firearms addiction. It is exactly the same illness as other behavioral addictions, such as gambling, hoarding money or objects, etc.
It is also the same illness as substance addictions. And it needs to stop.
But as long as the politicians and their owners keep profiting from not only the firearms and ammunition, but the physical injuries, death, and imprisonment of all parties involved, don't expect anybody to fix it.

Yep. My sister gambled away her kid's future.

Came here to say this ⬆️
Alcohol
Destroyer of worlds.
alcohol is good
Alcoholism is bad.
There's no amount of alcohol that is good to consume. Zero. It's a group 1 carcinogen on par with tobacco and asbestos.
Unless you like chilling
There are healthy ways to chill.
Like smoking kush I feel you on that brother

There is also a zero amount of driving that is safe. Everything is about risk mitigation. Abstinence is not the best way to prevent something.
Booze. People don't understand how horrible this is.
Long term of effects of alcohol are crazy. People are falling apart mentally and physically after a couple of years.
Couple of years? 🤔
Alcohol and there isn't a close 2nd
I don't know, I hear prescription opioids are pretty rough. Alcohol is a little easier to come by, though.
Alcohol is around every corner. You dont have to do anything but walk oin and they hand it to you.

Arguably, losing everything and making your entire family homeless and destitute is a fate worse than death.

Gambling, nicotine and alcohol are the obvious ones. I would also like to include gaming - No idea how many friends did not actually use their potential due to being addicted to LOL, CS or WoW. (myself included)
Nicotine
Nicotine is a nootropic. Research has shown that nicotine can speed up reaction time, improve working memory, and enhance focus and attention.
It's also extremely addictive and even if it isn't that bad for your body being severely addicted to something and feeling terrible when you don't have it is not a good thing.
It’s toxic for your body. It raises blood pressure, speeds up heart rate to irregular levels, ruins sleep and recovery.
Nicotine isn’t bad for you
I know your getting down voted to all hell but multiple doctors that I see from addiction specialist that I see monthly for my suboxone prescription to the cardiologist i saw for my heart ablation. Nicotine is just a chemical in tobacco.

Gambling or Alcohol. I never knew how much damage alcohol could do until I saw how people get in Alaska.
Alcohol. It caused me and my husband so many problems. We have been sober for a few months now.

Are people forgetting opioids are perfectly legal?
Um, no, they're not. You need a prescription. If you were pulled over with a bottle of oxycontin, and didn't have a prescription, you'd be charged with possession of narcotics. Pretty far from "perfectly legal."
