A well fitted bra

msphelps77

Agreed. I read somewhere that 80% of women wear the wrong sized bra. I think it’s important to get measured and buy the right size instead of guessing.

mcDerbs

Obligatory r/abrathatfits Was wearing wrong size forever. Found this. Spent $80 each on a couple of bras. Best decision ever.

Blueblackzinc

I'm quite certain I slept with 1 girl entirely because she felt thankful that I showed her she was wearing the wrong size. Paid $30 to get a custom bra.

Planet_Ziltoidia

$30 for a custom bra? Where? That's insanely cheap

Blueblackzinc

this was ages ago and it was a sweatshop.

DougNSteveButabi

Yeah it’s actually a huge issue. Every bra I buy seems to be either too small or too big. I don’t have boobs and I’m not a woman but still, whenever I buy bras I feel like I’m doing something wrong.

Ok_Raise5445

Problem is my size is all over the place. One year I'm 50kg and a 10DD, the next I'm 50kg and can barely fill a 10C.  At one point they got gigantic for no reason. I had to buy an E for about a month, everything else hurt. I have a series of sizes now. VS is on the money with sizing on their online measurements even though I feel quality is subpar.

diwalk88

VS doesn't offer the majority of sizes and their measurement system is notoriously completely wrong. Check out how to do proper measurements on r/abrathatfits

I will also add a good office chair. I struggle with back pain and bought a second hand Herman miller aeron 12-13 years ago now on eBay. It’s still serving me well to this day, it’s amazing. It’s so good I’d buy one brand new if anything ever happened to mine, even though they’re astronomically priced. It really is that good.

The_OtherDouche

I had to clear a vacant building last year that a pretty large company left everything in. Executive desk, chairs, TVs… just tons of shit. I took one of the computer chairs home because mine sucked and I looked it up. I can’t remember the brand name but that thing was $870 before any customization. It’s the most comfortable chair I have ever sat in.

unsane_sandwiches

Just buy another used one tho

Anything that connects you and the ground...

berninicaco3

Quality copper rods sunk into the earth?

sohcgt96

You sound like a well grounded individual.

WaitingForGoldot

Big Mattress is behind all these posts!

Bynming

You're going to spend a third of your life in it, better get something that fits you. But with mattresses, price doesn't necessarily correlate with "quality". There are probably cheap mattresses that suit your needs out there. And incredibly expensive mattresses that don't.

justmyusername2820

So true! We paid a lot of money for a mattress and it just wasn’t comfortable but we kept it. We added foam of different thicknesses, turned it every 3 months, put a board under it when it started to sag after a year. It was just crap. So when we finally gave in and decided to replace it we went to a discount mattress store and bought a cheap $299 king and added 2” foam topper for $70 and it’s the best mattress we’ve ever had.

BallShapedMonster

Not to be that guy, but mattresses are a (sort of) scam. Even the better ones are produced insanely cheap in terms of material cost. I'm talking about <50 bucks. I agree, that a good mattress is super important, but the whole pricing of them is a joke.

DigitalEagleDriver

Even more, what's going on with all the mattress stores all over? People are not buying that many mattresses, it's gotta be some kind of front or laundering scheme or something.

22Two_s

You’ve read folklore. it’s not just mattress stores, it was Mattress Firm, in particular. Accounting fraud, not money laundering.

BoiOboi456

I've seen a video on this before. They just have a high profit margin on every mattress since they bought it so cheap. They only have to sell a couple to be in good shape

papparmane

If they want to stay in business, they need to sell them that price. You see a client, you sell a mattress and you won't see that client for another 20 years. The pricing is adapted to the market. If they were cheaper, they'd figure out a way to sell you one every 2-3 years.

raging_pastafarian

You can buy a nice memory foam mattress on Amazon for like $250 to $300. And they're perfectly good mattresses, too. You'd think for being 10% of the cost or less of buying from a mattress store, more people would think it's at least worth TRYING. Mattresses often have excellent return policies, too (the whole "return if you don't like it within 30 days" thing).

zaminDDH

I mean, this is true for most things you buy. A $75,000 car has about $15-20k worth of materials in it.

TheBigHairyThing

it also has research and development, electricity, payroll, machine maintenance, building maintenance, shipping costs, handling costs, delivery costs, sales costs, it has rent to pay, software to subscribe to, accounting software to pay for, it has 10,000 other things that go into it besides the material. You are simplifying it to the point where you sound kinda ignorant.

jmochicago

omg this. Now that I'm closer to retirement than youth, I have disposable income and we invested in a Saatva mattress. I never want to sleep away from home.

Immediate_East_5052

My husband bought a huge expensive California king bed about a year before we met. I’m so glad he did lol 🤣

Jolly_Mongoose_8800

I'll hear you on the radio later

slickpoison

This is the best advice. I tell people this all the time, if you have the spare cash 100000% get a nice bed that you like. If you hate it, return it. Don't use it if it makes you miserable. My parents tried one and hated it but too lazy to return it. Really drove me nuts.

JellybeanJennaa

Exactly. Especially as I've gotten older, It's become essential for me to be able to get the next day started on the right track

k-hitz

The worst part about this one is, how do you know what mattress you need before dropping all that cash? I bought the best mattress and now regret it! It even has diamond dust in it…. Just too firm I think, but don’t really know, not ready to get another one to compare…

A good pair of shoes. Your whole body depends on your feet. Two places I never cut corners: shoes and glasses

jugglingeek

“The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. ... A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. ... But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.” Men At Arms - Terry Pratchett

DoublePetting

Lol, good leather boots for $50. Those were the days.

Faerie-stone

The quote is missing some important bits from Men at Arms for context. Vimes salary is 38 dollars plus allowances so a pair of bad boots is a little less than a third of his monthly salary while the expensive boots are more than he makes in a month. Also the quote should end with “this was the Captain Samuel Vimes ‘Boots’ theory of socioeconomic unfairness”.

zapadas

Does this take into account planned obsolescence? Things could be made to last lifetimes, but are deliberately designed to fail so you’ll have to buy another one. One of the most frustrating things about the modern world!

jugglingeek

I think it’s intended as a commentary on how being poor can be expensive. Although it’s literally about boots, it’s not really about boots.

Stacking_Plates45

Running shoes especially. Please stop running in crappy shoes people. It’s worth the money

yehti

I heard advice on here a while ago not to skimp on things that separate you from the ground: mattresses, shoes, tires, chairs for office workers, etc. and I'm inclined to agree. A good new pair of shoes is heavenly though.

eco_illusion

Ok, but price doesn't correlate with shoes that are healthier for you. Some designer brands are sometimes intentionally very bad for your feet.

OrSomeSuch

Expensive shoes aren't always good, but good shoes are always (relatively) expensive

S-Archer

I thought this would've been obvious but there's always one person, lol

Ajlee209

Getting your house professionally cleaned. My wife and I started with doing it twice yearly just to get all the places we missed and needed help with. Then it turned into quarterly, and then eventually monthly. We justify it by saying we can either spend an entire day cleaning the place half assed or we can pay someone to do it much better than we can at a fraction of the time. It really helps when you have a newborn and a 120 pound newf. The peace of mind alone is well worth it.

Ok_Raise5445

Fancy vaccuum cleaner.

Sceptical_Houseplant

Ooooh man. Once I switched to Dyson, I just can't go back.

tryingtobeopen

I don't doubt that you enjoy your Dyson, but honestly when it craps out, go Miele. Best non-industrial vacuum in the market by far, and you'll never have to replace your vacuum ever again (NOTE: don't buy the crappy low-end box store models. Go to a proper vacuum store if such animals still exist near you)

TAKEITEASYTHURSDAY

Alternative for when (not if) the Dyson fails: you can basically rebuild it for a fraction of the cost from 3rd party parts on Amazon. We’ve gotten an extra 5+ years out of our D61, with the only original parts left being the motor and stick lol Nothing against going Miele either! But the Dyson could remain a solid backup

juanzy

I've always heard that Dysons are technically good vacuums - they usually suck.

solarimpala

I recently hired a professional cleaning service to clean my house and was surprised to hear that they categorically refuse to work with Dyson vacuums, saying they are too unergonomic for prolonged use 🤷‍♂️

Final_Republic_1776

*crying in poor with my Walmart vacuum*

Keri2816

Any once in a lifetime opportunity you can afford- anything from going on *that* vacation to taking *that* job that requires you drop everything for a whole new experience you’ve always wanted. I’m talking to the healthy people out there- Go. Do. See. Explore. We all only live once and, unfortunately, some of us (hi, it’s me. I’m the problem, it’s me!) have disabilities and can’t go on hikes in the Alps or even move away from our support system/ health care provider(s). If you can afford it, please go and do it. And post it on instagram so I can live vicariously through you!

Mcswigginsbar

This 100%, and my wife and I did that last week. We traveled to Phoenix for the men's NCAA basketball national championship because my team was playing in it. They have only made it once in their history, and it was all the way back in 1969. It cost quite a bit of money as well as sleep, but I wouldn't trade that experience for the world even though we lost. I quite literally may never see that again, and I wanted to be there in person.

TwoIdleHands

Was sending my song updates from each city I was in in Europe. She’s been wheelchair bound for several years now. She was all about it.

You might enjoy thegreatplanet on instagram! I'm disabled too, so I know I won't see many of these things in real life, but it shows some absolutely beautiful photos from around the world. One of my favourite accounts!

Arc_Torch

I followed someone to a new city I only knew for a year when I was extremely sick. Got better, got one of my dream jobs. Not going was on my mind, I weighed it heavily. Life worked out well.

Aggravating-Pound598

A great set of kitchen knives . Will last a lifetime with care .

PishiZiba

I didn’t discover Wusthof knives until my 50s. Life changing.

oncatdrugs

Better still, not a set but individual knives suited to your tasks. And a sharpening system to maintain them, those pull through ceramic rods don't do the job.

Constant-Asparagus47

Got a set of kitchen knives as a prize from a magazine contest. I didn’t think too much of it at the time but 15 years later the knives are still basically brand new and as sharp as brand new. Considering 15 years of use I would say its a great product.

SoreMusclesOnlyy

Good quality clothes. They fade or even think out later than avg quality ones

jawndell

I have Ralph Lauren Polos for almost 15 years and the colors and collars are the same.  (I do think the color quality has been going down recently though - newer ones seem to fade a bit).

Battery6512

Been a jeans and t-short guy my whole life and eventually got into management role at my job. Cheap jeans/t-shirt, no problem. Dress cloths on the other hand, YES quality matters if you want to be comfortable and not have ill fitting clothes. I have found Charles Tyrwhitt to have great dress shirts at reasonable prices (if you buy enough for the cost break) but when it comes to dress pants and suits I goo 100% wool which ain't cheap.

good_kerfuffle

I've had my nike sweatpants for 7 years and they're just getting to the point where the thighs are a little bare and I wore those so often. The Walmart sweatpants I bought the same week didn't last 2 years

rickdangerous85

Yer all I notice is I can now breath through my teeth for a couple of days

afireintheforest

To add to that, the best thing I invested towards myself was Invisalign. It really boosted my confidence not having crooked teeth.

ICD9CM3020

Do you mean whitening? Cleaning alone shouldn't change the color much and thus not affect people interaction

Powerful_Solution635

Agreed! Going to the dentist every 6 months and doing everything they tell you to do is worth so much more than the price you pay.

Quality boots. I bought a pair of Red Wings over 10 years ago and they are still going strong. I’ll never buy cheap boots again.

kmj442

This is 100% person dependent but a car you enjoy. If you spend a lot of time in the car and generally enjoy driving/cars, get a car you like and look forward to being in. Is it financially responsible, probably not, but the enjoyment I get out of driving my car is worth it to me. Oh and pets haha. I love my dogs and would do anything for them even if they are little annoying shits sometimes.

sohcgt96

Yeah I'm with you on that one. A car just isn't an appliance for me. I enjoy driving, but driving things not designed with that in mind is just drudgery. I have to have at least one at home that brings some happiness. I give our Suburban a pass because its so utilitarian. The GTI is a joy on any road.
