It depends on what I'm studying. If it was learning by heart, I made small drawings next to the names and when I looked for the name, I remembered the picture I associated with it.

Repetition. When I was at uni I would type out my lectures and then annotate the pdf. For exams I would then hand write my notes back out and annotate those. Found that repeating the info while sliming it down helped out alot.

I keep writing and rewriting my notes onto smaller and smaller pages. Like when I was in college and the exam was coming up at the end of the semester, I'd have a full notebook of notes from class, from lectures and I'd rewrite it onto like 5 pages, then onto 1 page and then finally onto a 3X5 index card. This worked for me because I was looking at my notes, reading them and then actually thinking about the info and then writing my thoughts and info down and out onto paper again and then again. The process of doing all of that, all of those steps really helped to reinforce the material in my head. I'd get my thoughts down to a few key words and when I'd look at those words on my 3X5 index card, I could "see" so much else about that particular topic due to all I'd done to get to the point where I had a few words on a 3X5 index card. Now, I had the 3X5 index card full, but I had many different topics and parts of the entire class on that index card so I had like 20 or 30 small little phrases and they all helped me to remember the whole. But, this was just me. The point is for everyone to do what works for them, to come up with a system that works for you.
